I am sad to report that my brother, Karl Soppeland (ColoSwiss) of Boulder, Colorado lost his battle with cancer two days ago. During the last twenty years he assembled one of the finest collections of Swiss Army Knives in North America with almost 3000 different models. He purchased knives on his travels throughout the world and from many varied sources.
If anyone is interested in his collection please contact me at (email removed- contact Grant (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php?action=profile) if interested) for more information.

I'm so sorry to read this post. It really hit home. My brother passed in August and it's so difficult to endure.
My sincerest condolences for your family.
-
My condolences on your family's loss.
-
Sincerest condolences. Karl's passing is a HUGE loss to the SAK collecting community.
I sent you an email - please let me know if you need help with Karl's collection. Karl was a good friend and I'd like to see his wonderful knives find good homes.
-
My condolences, and may we help you find comfort.
-
Sorry to hear this mate. May strength and peace be with you.
-
Sending my condolences to you.
-
My condolences.
-
Wishing you and your family all the strength you need to get through this difficult time...
-
ColoSwiss, my condolences for your family.
-
I am shocked to hear this, Karl was a great member of the SAK community and always surprised me with his pictures. If some extremely rare model of SAK was discussed you could always expect Karl to pop up with some pictures, he seemed to have everything.
My condolences and I wish you and your family all the strength on processing this loss :-[
-
I'm also shocked to hear this. My condolences.

I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

Sorry for your loss ColoSwiss.

So sorry for your loss :salute:
-
My condolences.

Just to clarify, Karl, aka ColoSwiss is who passed away, not his brother. His brother was kind enough to let us know, despite having to deal with this loss in his own life, and for that, I greatly thank him.
This is a HUGE loss to our community and I am very sorry to hear of this. Karl was a great friend and an exceptionally knowledgeable collector. He and I go way back, to well before Multitool.org, and I was very glad when he made the jump from SOSAK to MTO with me.
Karl, I am glad to hear that you are no longer suffering, but I am going to miss you immensely. RIP buddy, and my most sincere condolences to your family. And huge thanks again to your brother (I'm sorry, I don't know your name) for taking the time out of your grieving to let a bunch of faceless people on the internet know what happened.

-
Very sad news. My sincere condolences go out to his family and his "MTo family". He was a wonderful part of our little community, and I'm sorry I didn't get to know him better.
-
I wish the family all the best and strength in this trying times.
-
I read the email earlier at work and it completely floored me.
Just a regular day, wanting to get home then "Bang" the sad news knocked me for six.
Like many here, I never met Karl - or Colo as I often referred to him. But he was always eager to share his wealth of information - there can't be many here who I would tip my hat to if I ever met up, but Karl was one of the few whom I would do so, he had my utmost respect.
I'm actually gutted, it's really knocked it home how we go about our daily lives thinking of other things but never living in the moment.
Sincere condolences to Karl's family. I hope they know just how fondly he will be remembered. I miss him already.
-
Mark, if you are reading this, I am sorry for your loss.
Angel's and ministers of grace defend us.
May Karl be in heaven half an hour before the devil even knows he has passed.
I had few, if any interaction with ColoSwiss here, but anyone could see he was a generous soul, with a mass of knowledge about Swiss army knives that was legendary.
As others have said, thank you for taking the time to let us know. I'm sure you have other more pressing concerns. Thank you
-
Lots of his pics popped up recently again over here: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php?topic=77357.msg1699395.msg#1699395

deepest condolences and heartfelt pain,
may he rest in peace and thank you for letting us know.
-
We will miss you Karl. Rest in peace.
-
RIP ColoSwiss
Thank you for everything!
-
My sincerest condolences to the family and all his online and real world friends.
I can't put into words how very sad and in shock I am by the news of his passing. I never met him in person and we were many thousands of miles and an ocean apart but I felt close to him and considered him a real friend.
His knowledge, friendliness to newcomers to the SAK world, willingness to share what he has learned over the years, educate, post pictures and help where ever he could was really an inspiration to me and to many off us here. We spent many hours filling the SAKwiki with information to make it easier for the future generations of collectors and for an occasional SAK user to identify their old and faithful pocket companion.
Many don't know this, but a lot of the SAKwiki.com Wenger pages and Collection pages were actually written by Karl, and he'd then send me pics and the text per email for me to turn into code and create the pages and fill the index with new models. SAKwiki surely wouldn't be as big or as informative and full of representative pictures as it is now if it wasn't for Karl.
I sincerely feel a great loss and sadness for my friend I never met. :(
May you rest in peace, Karl. :salute:
-
Rest in peace ColoSwiss :salute:

My deepest condolences to his family.

Godspeed my friend! :(

Wow! I remember Karl from way back in the SOSAK days.

The SAK community lost a great member. Rest in peace Karl. May the family find comfort as well.
-
R.I.P. Karl, you will be missed :salute:
-
Condoleances.
Karl was a great guy and a great friend.
I remember how he passed on that SOG TiNi CrossCut that he had won for me as he knew how much I wanted it.
It's still one of my prized possesions.
Rest in peace, Coloswiss. hopefully you are at ease now. my mother and my grandfather both died of cancer and it was a nightmare.
-
My condolences to the family, both irl and on the web
[It's not failure if you learn something from it]
-
RIP Coloswiss, my condolences to his family.
-
Can't find the right words ...
We all know it's inevitable, but still it hits you right in the face when it happens to someone dear to you ...
My condolences to his family and loved ones.
How I'm going to miss those beautiful pictures, or whenever somebody was asking questions about some rare and elusive SAK, and Karl would drop in and post a pic (and not just a pic, but always a stunning piece of art) of that same elusive SAK being in his collection ...
I'm going to miss you mate, R.I.P.
-
My condolences, sending good energy your family's way.
-
The name Karl Soppeland didn't ring a bell, but now I realize his name on the forum was ColoSwiss.
What a great loss for our SAK community and most of all of course to his family. He always had a positive contribution to MTO and its members.
Strange how the loss of someone you don't know, still can be a very sad event.
Hopefully his legacy will remain available on the forum.
-
Oh no! I'm terribly sorry to hear this.
Hopefully heaven is big enough for that gigantic SAK collection!
-
While I didn't have the pleasure of knowing Karl IRL, I remember ColoSwiss from various forums going back to SOSAK days, and was always impressed with his knowledge, patience, meticulousness, warmth, and generosity. RIP...

Amici,

La mia più profonda comprensione, ora sei tra le braccia del signore.. Ti mancherà molto..

You have my word on that.

Thank you Karl....you are loved and will be missed but you will forever be in our memory.
Thank you Grant for protecting his legacy.

I was just using the search function yesterday and ran across one of ColoSwiss' threads. I cherish every word he wrote and am so thankful of the contributions he made to this forum.

Karl represented all that was great about this forum- if there was a ranking system (there isn't) I feel like he would be in the position we all strive for, and protecting his legacy is something I feel strongly about.
Just as strongly as I feel about helping, protecting and serving ALL of our members. At Multitool.org we look after our own- always have, always will.
While the circumstances were unfavorable, I would like to openly thank everyone who has contacted me privately to share their feelings and condolences, including the many members who haven't been active in a long time. If there is a silver lining to news like this, it's that it gives us all a reminder to reach out to those that haven't been around in a while.
With as many members as we have, I don't get to know everyone as well as I did in the early days, and that is perhaps the greatest failing of MTO. I would like to encourage everyone to send me a note if they have any thoughts, questions, comments etc that they may not want public- you are welcome to add me on FB, Instagram, LinkedIn, Hangouts, WhatsApp- whatever medium you feel most comfortable on. I always appreciate hearing from all of you, and my door is always open. While I may never get to know all of you as well as I would like, I would at least like to get to know all of you a little better than I do now.
Every last one of you matters.
And, while you are at it, make sure to tell your loved ones how important they are to you. Maybe it's not manly (at least not in a traditional sense) But put your machismo aside for an hour a week and take the time to let at least one person in your life know that you appreciate that they are there.
I don't think I told Karl how much I appreciated him here, and now that option is lost forever.

I've been away for a while & one of the first things I noticed on my return was the passing of CS. He was a giant In the SAK community. His knowledge was virtually limitless and his willingness to share it was boundless. Whenever you saw his name you knew something of value, something of interest was going to follow. His unstinted willingness to share his knowledge w/the SAK community was unparalleled. I can only assume that his willingness to give of himself extended not only to the SAK community but to his family & to the community at large.
Farewell CS! Thank you for all you have done. You will be sorely missed & ever remembered by all those who knew you.

Been doing some work in the photo galleries in the Wiki recently
It's very poignant - as so many images have come from the collection and camera of our great friend ColoSwiss (as Grant pointed out in this thread)
However it is a wonderful legacy for him to leave for us - and for all Wiki users and SAK fans out there.
Thanks CS - I hope you are looking down on us and smiling
-
I have been away for a long time, and it is indeed a sad news to hear about CS passing.
For those years when I was active, CS has always been generous sharing his knowledge, and like Huntsman mentioned, I was constantly amazed with the contribution he made to the SAKwiki, even when I was away and trying to find references in SAKwiki.
My deep condolences to his family and friends, may he RIP with all his favorite MTs right next to him.

We miss you, Colo Swiss! Thinking about you this morning. Thanks for awl your help and beautiful pics! :salute: :SAKnight:

Been over a year now.
I keep bumping into Carl's posts.
Losing him meant losing an important piece of the place we call our internet home.
He's not forgotten... At all.
