Some of you asked me in my presentation to post some pictures of my custom Opinel. It's not a multitool (except the #10 with corkscrew), but here are some in different styles. All with fileworks.
A deer antler #10 :
(http://i35.servimg.com/u/f35/17/45/69/42/10vri_10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=49&u=17456942)
A Bahia rosewood carved #10 :

A cocobolo #2 :
(http://i71.servimg.com/u/f71/17/45/69/42/2i_coc10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=86&u=17456942)
A carved Elforyn #8 with a polished blade :
http://www.servimg.com/image_links.php?i=3
A ziricote and reindeer #8 with aluminium inlays and basketwork scrimshaw :
(http://i45.servimg.com/u/f45/17/45/69/42/8vri_l10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=2&u=17456942)
It was a projet for the 20 years of a French craftmanship materials supplier. He gave everyone a material and the knives and other object were published in a commemorative book.
#9 roe deer antler :
(http://i35.servimg.com/u/f35/17/45/69/42/9vri_c10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=48&u=17456942)
#9 with deer antler, amboina burl and chamois horn :
(http://i71.servimg.com/u/f71/17/45/69/42/9vri_c10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=81&u=17456942)
Another #9 in stabilized and dyed elm burl :
(http://i45.servimg.com/u/f45/17/45/69/42/9vri_e10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=4&u=17456942)
I'll show more if you are interested in.

Wow, Michel. :o
I don't know which one I like better. All pieces of art. :hatsoff:
This one is amazing.
-
Thanks a lot enki_ck. The first difficulty with this one was to use metal tools for the blade groove. The scrimshaw took time also.

Wow, Michel. :o

How did you cut the groove for the blade?
Oh yea....... BEAUTIFUL work by the way!
-
Thanks to all.
How did you cut the groove for the blade?
Instead of using a small circular saw for wood and other materials I used the same kind of tool for steel (sorry I don't know the exact translation, fraise-scie in French).
-
The Deer Antler one looks  along with all the others!
-
Thanks CanadianLMfan. It's hard to find the right deer antler with the "crown" for a #10. This one was perfect for that use. For a #12 it's easier.
The roe deer antler for the #9 was also an exception. Usually this material suits for a #6 or #7 only.
-
Awesome work! The scrimshaw one is my favorite, its fantastic!
-
I guess it is unanimous, they all are amazing pieces of art, but the scrimshaw one turned really really nice.
I also like the one with Bahia Rosewood
Congrats sir, your craftsmanship is just too awesome!!!
-
They are amazing

The deer antler is the best, I say.
-
Thanks again to all. Here are some others.
First another deer antler #10 :
(http://i71.servimg.com/u/f71/17/45/69/42/10vri_10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=84&u=17456942)

A coolibah burl #9 (Australian eucalyptus), a boxwood/warthog tusk #8 garden knife and a deer antler #3 :
(http://i45.servimg.com/u/f45/17/45/69/42/opinel10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=18&u=17456942)

WOW!
-
Thanks. These Australian burls are very hard and can be used as massive wood.
Another deer antler #8 in a modern style :
(http://i57.servimg.com/u/f57/17/45/69/42/8vri_c10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=198&u=17456942)
Another one in the same style on which I did a woodcock scrimshaw :

Thanks to all.
How did you cut the groove for the blade?
Instead of using a small circular saw for wood and other materials I used the same kind of tool for steel (sorry I don't know the exact translation, fraise-scie in French).
Literal translation is "strawberry saw", which is a bit weird, but actually its a slitting saw in English. :) Fraise also seems to refer to mill cutters.
And the work is simply beautiful.
-
Thhe one with the woodcock is just amazing!
that's us mobile
-
You continue to leave us speechless, Michel.
Great work. :tu:
-
Thanks again to all.
The last one is a reindeer #9 close to the original Opinel handle shape :
(http://i57.servimg.com/u/f57/17/45/69/42/9vri_c10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=206&u=17456942)

Thanks, it was a slitting saw.

Some new #7 custom Opinel. First a classic deer antler one :
(http://i57.servimg.com/u/f57/17/45/69/42/7vri_c12.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=230&u=17456942)
Another one deer antler with brass insert :

The same style with stainless steel insert :

I hope the weather will be better tomorrow to post new SAKs.
-
These are really beautiful :salute:
-
Thanks greenbear.
-
Excellent work as usual. Looking forward to the new SAKs. :tu:
-
How have I missed this thread???? I am currently playing around with opinels doing handles. Your work sir is amazing. I for see you getting quite a few PM's in the near future.

Thanks enki. I'll check if I posted all pics. There's a fileworked Alox cigar cutter I have to shoot. I have ideas for new ones.
Thanks also Farmman. Don't hesitate for PM's. I hope we'll see your work soon.
-
very nice opinels!! :salute: congrats mate!
-
Wow those are amazing! By any chance do you have any handles that are made out of stone?
-
Thanks Sidhartha for these kind words, knowing your work.
Thanks also Cogito. Not of stone but with materials like Corian or Elforyn wich are a mix between synthetic and mineral materials.
A few years ago I saw some #13 marble Opinel in a knife show by the Opinel Museum in St Jean de Maurienne (The Opinel brand is near in Chambery). It was the work of a stone carver. The knife was assembled but it wasn't folding because of the hardness of the material for cutting the groove.
-
Here's a Corian #2 with brass pin :
(http://i57.servimg.com/u/f57/17/45/69/42/2i_cor10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=233&u=17456942)
Searching old pictures I found these. Olivewood/AZ desert ironwood #8 :
(http://i57.servimg.com/u/f57/17/45/69/42/8vri_o10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=234&u=17456942)
And a marble wood garden #8 :

A mammooth/moor oak #2 with damascus blade (I did before the same in #8) :
(http://i57.servimg.com/u/f57/17/45/69/42/2n_mor10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=236&u=17456942)
-
Just WOW!

-
Thanks ducttapetech.
-
The smaller ones are lovely, and so is the #8. Its butt end is very elegant.
The damascus #2 is my favorite though! Congrats Michel, your work is just superb!!
-
Impressive handles! The Corian ones seem excellent as they will not jam the blade when wet.
-
Thanks WWW and microbe.
I had a try with PEHD 500. It would have the same advantage for use in all conditions but it's very hard to polish.
-
Fabulous work here on all of these Michel!¡!
-
Thanks Terry !
-
I have a few opinel and that is the best looking one in deer stag that I have ever seen.
Jim
-
Thanks again !
-
Stunning work Michel. :hatsoff:
-
Thanks a lot Gareth.
-
I should have said that is the best lookin Opinel that I have ever seen and one of the best looking knives period.
-
Michel, looking at your thread here on forum felt like I was walking through an exhibit in a museum looking at works of art and fine craftsmanship resting inside rows of glass cases. Thank You.

-
Thank you again. I show you the last ones :
- A warthog tusk #9 with damascus blade :

-
Oh wow!! Those are nice!!!
live from Nate's mobile
-
Thanks !
-
Those newest two are just begging for scrimshaw, but they are beautiful as it is!
-
Thanks ironraven. I'm a beginner for scrimshaw but for complex projects I send knives to a French artist (Christian Camboulives) which does a beautiful work. He also has a personal techique for pyrography, much like scrimshaw. I'll show you better examples, I just find this picture of a rock star caricature from him on a boxwood #8 I made :
(http://i57.servimg.com/u/f57/17/45/69/42/8vri_a10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=253&u=17456942)
-
LOL! I don't think I want my fingers that close Jager's mouth. But it is beautifully done.
-
:D Thanks for him. And there's a detail that wasn't visible on the pic :
(http://i57.servimg.com/u/f57/17/45/69/42/8vri_a11.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=254&u=17456942)

Aiiiii
How came I haven't saw this thread earlier...

Thank you very much edcgear.

A fine job with that #8 Jagger :tu:
-
Thanks Terry.

Hi all,
Here's a new garden #8 Opinel with canvas micarta like ivory. Simple cylindric shape, stainless steel blade with classic filework :
(http://i39.servimg.com/u/f39/17/45/69/42/8vri_j10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=255&u=17456942)

Hi all,
Here's a new garden #8 Opinel with canvas micarta like ivory. Simple cylindric shape, stainless steel blade with classic filework :
(http://i39.servimg.com/u/f39/17/45/69/42/8vri_j11.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=256&u=17456942)
Handle shape may be simple but it is outstandingly beautiful!! Congrats once again!!
-
Thanks WWW. This blade shape allows some designs which wouldn't be possible with the usual yatagan blade.
-
Clean, simple, easy to clean, hard to hurt, but still elegant.
Now, maybe a bit of a challange, but putting two blades into an Opinel design, say a regular carbon blade and a stainless garden blade? Would you think it possible?
-
Thanks ironraven !
Now, maybe a bit of a challange, but putting two blades into an Opinel design, say a regular carbon blade and a stainless garden blade? Would you think it possible?
I know a craftsman who dit it. On small sizes it was opposite blades with two rings and for the #12 a standard blade and a wood saw blade on the same ring. It needs adjusting of the assembly ring and the security ring.
-
I'm late to show you the new ones. A carbon blade #10 with AZ desert ironwood handle. No filework on this order :
(http://i39.servimg.com/u/f39/17/45/69/42/10vri_10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=257&u=17456942)
A #8 with jay feathers resin inlay (PMMA center) :
(http://i39.servimg.com/u/f39/17/45/69/42/8vri_l10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=258&u=17456942)

It's very delicate for turning but the polishing isn't really a problem.
-
I'm not sure which one I like better. :dd:
-
Some amazing custom Opinels.
-
That feather is AMAZING.
-
Thanks to all !

Hello,
Just finished this morning, two orders for the same model. The only difference are the filework and some details of the woord or carving. Bahia rosewood handle, very hard dark brown/red wood :
(http://i39.servimg.com/u/f39/17/45/69/42/10vri_11.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=263&u=17456942)

-
I wish I had the time and talent to work up to what you do. Or the money to throw at you and say "make me smile". Sadly, I don't.
-
Thanks a lot ironraven. You can have a try. I started modding Opinel knives in 2001, trying to improve the technic along the years. Already 13 years, I didn't realize.
-
Thanks to all !
Here's a deer antler #12 with a brass ring for lanyard. Stainless blade with vine filework :

:o
Michel, That is so very

Your work is allways amazing.

Great work there mate:)
Sent from the astropathic choir.

Thanks Mike !

We should have more French people here.
French and Italians hold the keys of aesthetics, design and beauty, without meaning to underestimate the rest of the world but that's my opinion.
Just look at that!

Ive not been on this post for a while and im blown away by your work michael  keep it up as love looking at these beuties :salute:
-
Thanks again to all. kkokkolis it's a great compliment. In France we had the occasion to share about Opinel customisation on many forums but the good atmosphere disappeared over the years and sharing also. Thats' why I'm happy to be here.
I also saw nice Opinel mods from Poland, Russia, USA... and other countries. Opinel is present almost everywhere. SAK mods are not in our culture unfortunately.
-
There are also some Opinel. Deer antler and damasteel blade #8 :

Wow, I love this one.
-
Well I don't think anything beats the damasteel blade - with regards to the handle, I don't see how anyone would make up their mind with all the beautiful variations you are producing. Truly stunning works of art.
-
Thanks a lot Raukodur ! Sparky415 here's a picture of my workbench with many projects on (SAK, Opinel and others) :

There are some threads here that demand looking at over and revisiting again and again. Such terrific work here and so much to drool over. I had to look at this thread again after getting an Opinel again. Michael M :salute:

Great looking knives. How do you manage to do the groove in the handle? By hand, with some power tool (dremel or similar)? I thought about making a handle for an Opi, but the groove part isn't easy, specially when you don't have any power tools...

Thanks. Yes, it's the most difficult part of the work. I use different tools. For wood or other not too hard block materials a small circular saw on the drill press. It needs to be carefull, It could be dangerous.
For raw matérials I use cutting discs in different thickness mounted on the drill press. In this way you have both hands to hold the handle. I found Dremel is not a good solution but some people use it with success..

My son just bought a Number 9 for me yesterday. Hot on the heels of the Minimalist Challenge, I decided to pack it today with the SI. I don't know why, but I'm really smitten with this knife already! I think it even beats, sharpness wise, a knife an old family fried brought back for me from the Laplanders. There aren't many I consider scary sharp, but this baby is one of them! I love the custom mods in this thread!

Thanks Barry !

What do you do with these pieces of art? You just collect them? Or do you expose them? And sell them?

Most of them are realized to order for users or collectors.

Just picked up a #6 for both my son and I. Haven't done any customized work on either it or my #9 but I absolutely love them!

Those are beautiful!
