Title: Executive Lounge
Post by: NorCalJim on November 02, 2017, 02:36:23 AM
The Chuck Yeager Challenge has successfully completed with a whole month of watching the Executive in action!

My regard has grown significantly for this very useful Swiss Army Knife--it packs big utility in a small package!

I enjoyed the month-long Chuck Yeager Challenge and would like to have a topic area for those who enjoy using the Executive to display its beauty and utility. In launching this topic, the Executive Lounge, I am inviting Executive owners to continue to share their Executives in action, pose them, or use your imagination as the mood strikes. :)

Here are some photos of my new Executives to start things off...

Thanks NorCalJim. I had fun with this challenge,  and even traveled with the Executive.  It meet some challenges I didn't expect to come up (like unlocking a bathroom stall that was locked from the inside). Now that we're into November,  is time to relax.  By the way,  I carried my beloved Explorer today,  and haven't even used it.

For most people, a daily carry is literally carried in one's pocket instead of located within arm's length as sometimes I did when it was hot. Since 1982, thanks to a gift of a Classic that I received, I have carried the Classic on my keychain until 2015 when I retired. When it is cool enough (late fall through a good part of Spring), I carry the Explorer in one pocket and frequently have another SAK in the other front pocket. When it is hot, I am usually in cargo shorts and carrying a MiniChamp II or wearing gym trunks around the house and the pockets are too thin for a 91mm SAK. Thanks to the 74mm Executive that is changed and I carry the Executive every day. Just in the last few days, I have used it to open several packages, including shrink-wrap products.

Yes, it is time to relax--no daily assignments to use the Executive. In the next couple of weeks, I plan to continue recondition some Executives.  I expect to have photos and will post them here.

Jim

Outstanding Jim!  I've grown to really like this knife myself.  It's just the right size for a true EDC...barely know it's even there but just the right combo of tools to make it viable for most things.

Thanks for starting this thread and thanks to all who participated in the challenge.  I've been a fan of the Executive since I can remember.  I'm pleased to see the challenge open some eyes as to how capable this tool really is.

Mine helped with changing a ceiling light.  The nail file worked fine for the Philips screws,  but I had to pull out the Leatherman PST to wrap the ground wire around the screw (don't tell anyone).

Mine is back in my pocket today!

As is mine, Barry. Such an easy SAK to slip into the pocket.

So....when you say "mine", does that mean you've officially purchased one and are a legitimate member of the Executive Lounge? Or have you stolen your son's and are a sort of Pirate Interloper here?     :duel:

I ground off the Key chain attachment on the red version for EDC purposes.

I think the black-scaled Executive will keep it's keychain attachment, enabling me to wear it on a neck lanyard during fishing expeditions. I'll have to see how that goes. Might end up grinding that keychain thing off as well.

You have plenty of company in wanting to remove the keychain attachment. My own preference is for the keychain since I like to attach a simple paracord lanyard to my SAKs.  I have grown so used to having lanyards that I would definitely miss the keychain attachment.

I'm funny that way, Jim. Some models seem to feel better with a lanyard, some not. I have lanyards of one sort or another on all my 58mm. Otherwise, the seem like they might slip out of a pocket unnoticed. My woods knives all get lanyards, also to help prevent loss and make them easier to see if put down in deep foliage.

But the Executive just feels better to me with a smooth handle. We'll see. I'll give the keychain attachment a try with the black-scaled version I've got.

Nice work for starting this Lounge!
As most of you know, I’m the latest entree to the party...
And to add to the fun I won’t be able to use the exec for 4 whole days!! :’(

So here’s a “farewell” picture:

OK, when we last looked at these two Executives with the scales popped, there was corrosion and ugliness.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4468/24101359068_a354758d53_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/CHKLnA)Executives - Pre-Spa (https://flic.kr/p/CHKLnA) by NorCal Jim (https://www.flickr.com/photos/148245174@N07/), on Flickr

I had no doubt, that these could be reconditioned and had new scales waiting. I even showed them to my wife and commented how nice they would look after a NAFTA bath.  Noticing that she wasn't thrilled with exposed petroleum products in the house or garage, I decided on a quick brute force cleaning with Dremel and wire brush. Needless to say, the corrosion is long gone but the liner surface is scratched and not my best work. A quick sanding on the small blade with progressive 400 through 2500 and no polishing (this time) has the Executive in excellent carry condition with the addition of new scales...

I was thinking that I have several classic sd, but generally I carry the Executive. I really like coloured sak, but it's quite difficult to find 74mm coloured one.
And also someone stolen mine few days ago.
Now I'm using the Hoffritz, and I like it, but probably I will swap scales from a limited ambassador with a red Executive, like I had done with the one stolen.

Yes, scales was taken from an ambassador of the n.1 serie, the one with purple square, and this is the one stolen.
I will use scales from another ambassador, from the same serie, red and yellow one, and put them on an Executive.
Also, a store near me, has the one with envelope letter and the one with flamingo. It's time to purchase the one with letter I think

I, too, think it would fun for Vic to produce some Executives and Ambassadors with patterned and themed scales. 'MacGyver Red' will always be my favorite, but there's no reason not to have some fun with these cool knives. I could see an entire line of Ambassadors with Country or City themes. "Why, yes, this my Kenyan Ambassador!"

Agreed. I did suggest Victorinox something like that when they introduced another batch of LE Classics. Some of you may know I'm a big fan of the 74mm line and I would love to have more scale variations.

Excellent Executives!  :tu:

OK, so there needs to be an Executive with scales made to look like the peel of an orange, maybe with a few trompe-l'œil dew drops. I know it's dead obvious; I'm just sayin'.....

That would be cool. I can ask my buddy to make some using one of his 3D printers :)

Swapped. I know that some collectors prefer to maintain the original sak, but I like to carry them, so probably they will lose colors and will have scratches. So if I prefer Executive to the Ambassador, I will carry the Executive . (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180205/c4f57eab872887980c64f75bbeb5dd74.jpg)

I recently scored a Director for less than ten dollars. It has belonged to the seller's grandfather, and in my opinion wasn't used much, if any. The only wear was to the case, which had some of the red lining missing. The Executive and especially the Director seem  to be pricey on the secondary market used, but deals can be found.   This evening, I peeled an orange with it--probably the only reason I started eating oranges was the Executive and its peeler. Blade has ad for MAAG, a Zurich based valve manufacturer.

The PX rides with my wallet. The Ambassador tends to sit in a jacket pocket, it can be a bit big for some watch/coin pockets.

Mind you when I'm not in the office I do like a pouch. How 'bout you Dan?

would love to carry one of these occasionally, trouble is, most of them are old as the hills (notice the one-branch springs on the scissors) and too precious to tote along.

actually, I have a beaten-up one for Edc. The unique orange peeler tool works wonders.

Now that the CYC2 Challenge is over, I thought that it would be nice to continue to share photos and narratives about our Executives.  For example, I took my first Executive "Family" photo.  The four on the right are new and spend almost all of their time in their boxes.  The top rear center Executive showed up in excellent condition and I cleaned/sterilized it and kept the scales for future polishing/scale restoration practice.  The bottom two center Executives have been completely reconditioned.  The top two right have been cleaned/sanitized but I am not sure whether they have been reconditioned (some of us seniors suffer from CRS--"Can't Remember Stuff"). The bottom three have had their scales removed and I'll have to examine them to see if I had started reconditioning them (see CRS)...

Some teasers...

Scissors - What are the differences between older scissors with the screw and the newer riveted scissors?  Hint: one cuts better and has a groove for the spring.

Back Spring - Do you have trouble extending all your tools for a photo?  Does one of your tools not deploy until you close an opposite tool?  Hmmm.

Nail File - Why do some offered on eBay have the file side so stained?

74mm Scales - Where can I get new scales?

Scratched Tools - Can I get rid of the scratches?

Cleaning - What should I know about keeping my Executive clean?

Snap - What do I do if my Executive's tools have no snap like my other SAKs?

Sharpening - What should I know about sharpening my Executive?

These teasers are offered to demonstrate that there is plenty to talk about in addition to sharing our use stories and photos.

Good thoughts on the Executive!  I like to point out that it punches way above its weight class--lots of function in a conveniently small package!

After the first CYC challenge, I started the Executive Lounge topic in the hopes that Executive owners would continue to share photos & experiences with this special Swiss Army Knife.  After a steady diet of photos and thoughts during this challenge, it would be a shame to see the enthusiasm evaporate.

In an attempt to revive the topic, I posted a "Family" photo and some teasers the day following the CYC2 completion.  Maybe it can be a weekly think like Swiss Champ Sunday.

I'll repeat this post in the Executive Lounge Topic thread in the hopes that more CYC2 challengers will see it.

Jim

Thanks Barry!  Folder Beholder is an amazing collector!  She has some ultra fine quality SAK specimen's in various categories including some excellent vintage examples.  Somewhat recently (I think), she has developed a passion for 58mm SAKs including some MiniChamp mods. I'll have to take some time and check out the challenge she started from start to finish.

I have several 58mm Classics like many SAK enthusiasts but have only been using the MiniChamp II for the last couple of years since they are attached to my car keys and I always have one with me whenever I am out and about.  Previously, I always had a black 58mm Classic SD attached to my key ring. During the first CYC challenge, I picked up an Executive to see what all of the fuss was about and got hooked.  I now have a whole new appreciation for 74mm SAKs and their tools.

As I've mentioned many times, I've been EDCing an Executive for as long as I can remember.  I also keep a Classic on my keyring.

My biggest challenge is deciding on whether to pair my Executive with a Cadet or Pioneer.  Lately, it's been a Pioneer.

And there was a Schronogomy club for a while, but I think you have to carry more than two SAK's or tools to qualify.

The Pioneer is an excellent choice to pair with an Executive or to use by itself.  The inline reamer/awl is an amazing tool!  Additionally, the build quality is exceptional.  Highly recommended!

Greetings executives!

I am hoping to join the executive lounge. I have been carrying larger SAKs for a while now, and I recently bought my girlfriend an executive as it is a smaller pocket knife which she will actually carry and use. Then I liked the look of hers so I have ordered myself one and I am just waiting for it to arrive. Just the right size for the watch pocket.

My main worry is the size of the scissors. They are larger than the 58mm scissors but not as large as the ones on the 91mm knives I am used to. So I thought I'd ask the group, what is the largest task you have managed using just an executive?
Title: Re: Executive Lounge

Congratulations on finding yourself an Executive. They are very versatile knives.   :tu:

There have been a couple of challenges featuring the Executive: Chuck Yeager Challenge (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,74095.0.html)  and the follow-up CYC 2 (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,78036.0.html).

Peruse through these threads and you'll find that the Exec is quite capable!

I think the biggest task I've done with the Exec is cutting up a whole chicken. But, I'm sure somebody has built a cabin or restored a vintage Buick with one, too.  ;)

Yes, you are right. If only victorinox add new colors for scales, or some limited editions like the 58 mm, it can be a excellent choice. Infact I'm using the Executive with scales taken from limited ambassador series.

Good evening. I have been carrying my black scaled Executive for around five months now and I am really enjoying it. It has performed admirably and never let me down. The handles are starting to get worn and scratched with use. I was wondering if anyone here knows of any supplier of custom scales for this size. There seem to be lots of people selling custom scales for the 58mm or the 91mm sizes, but only the red & black cellidor ones for the executive. Thanks

You may have more luck finding a used model with smooth Alox scales, pretty sure there a quite a lot of those in circulation.

CBL51's recent thread about the Executive reminded me of this thread... like the knife, too good to let it go!

Indeed!!!  His thread prompted me to order one, came yesterday.

Carried it all day and used the heck out of it. I’m impressed enough with it that when I head to work tonight, the Executive will be the only tool/knife in my pocket!!

Used the Executive to tighten a loose screw on my pantry door.

I have been carrying the Executive as my sole knife for the most part. Sometimes, if I'm going out and don't feel like carrying my Glock 19, I'll grab my Benchmade AFO II, as my defense weapon. The Executive still rides along.

I will admit that I recently bought a brand new Victorinox Recruit, and am waiting on it to arrive.  There have been a few times where the Executive just wasn't big enough for a given task.

I am going to try the Recruit and Cadet I recently bought. See if one of those serves me better, while still being light in the pocket.

The lack of scissors is always my downfall.  I love my Pioneer X, but it is a bit bulky in the pocket. Not terrible, but I have tried downsizing.

It might just turn out, at this particular point in my life, I'm just not ready for anything less than the venerable ol' Pioneer X.  I definitely don't require anything bigger. The need for my Leatherman tools has passed, I am sure.

I have a hard time deciding between the Recruit and Cadet.  The Recruit has the tweezers and toothpick, which I do use.

The Cadet has the nail file, which I use probably even more than the tweezers or toothpick.

Neither have back side tools, of which I am not a fan of. Hate backside tools.  One problem I continue to have with the Executive, I am always turning and flipping it around, trying to find the tool or blade I'm seeking. Haha

In any case, the Executive was the first one I reached for this morning. I keep a select few SAKs and knives in my kitchen drawer...

I feel the same about the Px being a tad too bulky.
I love my Pioneer, Soldier and Cadet though.

To compensate the lack of scale tools and scissors I always carry a SwissCard light in my wallet. Mind you though that i do never sit on my wallet. I'm not sure it would survive that  :D

The SwissCard light's scissors are the same size like the ones on the Executive. But they're a bit cumbersome to use.

Here are some comparison pics between Executive and SwissCard light...   :salute:

Thanks, VICMAN!

I have found that the Executive is really all the knife I NEED on a daily basis. Sometimes it is accompanied by either my JE Made slippy, Benchmade Griptilian (sporting AWT OD Green scales...)  or AFO II.

I like to play with those knives but they are not really needed. The Executive seems to have what I require. Believe it, or not, that little blade can do some serious damage to cardboard. Even the thick, heavy duty stuff!!

A quick touch up on my Victorinox diamond sharpener pen, and that blade is back up to snuff. I carry it with me every day as well

Put my Executve to work today.  The vent on top of my grinder pump cover rusted apart.  So I am fashioning one out of pvc.

Had to cut a piece and filed it with the Executive using that wonderful little file!

Now, I’ll cover that end with a piece of screen and screw on the end cover. Then the other end gets tapped into the leftover from the original vent.

Well, had to use old panty hose. Couldn’t find my screen material.  It’s just to keep bugs from going down in there...

(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200308/682303413f1ad7a7feda0e9728724b19.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200308/8c4deb1a8173e2239fa99845617fa221.jpg)

Tada!  All done. It’s ugly but cheap and it works. I will paint it green later. Haha

What a honey of a SAK this is. Three great blades, including the unique orange peeler / serrated scalpel, plus mid-size scissors, and large nail file... can do both flat and phillips screws... all in such a small tool.

And does it sure feel right in the hand.  :climber:

As posted elsewhere, moved back from the Climber to the Executive. Didn't really need the tools in the Climber, the Executive is more than adequate for my daily office needs and much lighter/smaller.

Got a pfrsantos lanyard in it. Not as good as a hook, but can work as one, if need be. The orange peeler acts as a fix point to keep it from sliding off.

I have returned to the Executive... after giving away several and only keeping an OG horn-scaled and Victoria model that was missing the back scale, I decided to buy a used Executive on the bay for EDC and order some replacement scales for the half naked Victoria model.

I do like the nail file better on the older versions... at any rate it’s a joy to carry and I’m missing the larger tools of a 84mm+ SAK less than I expected

Just arrived - my new Executive.

I have been a little disappointed in my 91-93mm SAKs because the tools are too stiff, and I wanted something bigger than my 58mm SAKs.  I've been wanting to try a 74mm, but they're hard to find.  I finally found this discontinued 74mm SAK at Walmart online.  It's exactly what the doctor ordered  :tu:

A quick question to you Executive owners - Since I don't need an orange peeler, are there any other good uses for that tool?

I use the orange peeler as a box cutter and slotted screw driver, as well as just a small blade, especially on food since it's easier to keep clean (keeps food from the base of the tool).

Hi guys... I've an Executive arriving tomorrow and its my first sub 91mm SAK...
I'm curious about the uses you guys give to the "orange peeler" besides peeling duty...

Does it cut boxes nicely?
Is it strong for small screws?
What other uses do you give to it?

Congrats on your new Executive, Jmoita. I'm probably gonna be in the minority here but, in my opinion, the screwdriver on the orange peeler isn't strong enough to handle anything but moderate loosening/tightening duties.
The lack of a Phillips driver and the thin design of the slotted driver are the only negatives that I have for mine.

Still trying to figure out the orange peeler... Serrations are dull, maybe I will create new ones when possible. Nice to open boxes by force, no very good for smaller plastic containers. Small blade to the rescue, but one must be careful when using to much force. Scissors being smaller than 91mm are still very good!

Use the inside pointy end of the peeler to punch the first hole in a clamshell package. After that, use the serrations part to cut the rest open.

It's awlso a nice small scrapper.

I agree with the scrapper function. But when I give it nice serrations it will be much more efective.

Found another use for the enigmatic orange peeler:

I broke my leg last week and had it repaired surgically. Can't get the splint wet, so it's the ol' garbage bag and tape routine before it get in the tub. Well the orange peeler worked splendidy as a saftey-blade to slip between the tape and my skin when it was time to cut the bags off. Felt safer than using the scissors even, with their pointy tips and all.

The Executive was already my EDC, and I'm proud to call it my companion through the rest of my recovery.

Too bad they have been discontinued. Really like the size plus the orange peeler is great for opening boxes. Here is one I just added some new scales on. Think the line would have last longer if they offered more tool options or added scale options with ink pens or like this both toothpick and tweezers in a single scale.

I had never modded 74mm until now, decided I better give it a try while you can still find a few of them. Had to sacrifice a rally SAK for the combo tool and back spring off a donor that was part of a SAK lot I recently picked up on eBay. Phillips screwdriver this size is super useful to me for kids toys and whatnot. Happy with results so far.

You have to, if only to try it out.
Does have to be a large, proper orange, though and not a small satsuma or something. It works OK, does a great job of slicing down the sides... but you still need to peel those sides off, so you still end up with fingers all messy and stinking of orangey D-Limone, like you've just cleaned the thermal paste off a hundred CPUs!

Of course, there's never just one use for any SAK tool... ;)

I always have a beaten Executive in my toiletries case, but just on Sunday I decided to EDC my good Executive in my Skinth Toolet, in a place where a folder or 1-3 layers SAK may also be carried.
BTW, has really anyone ever pealed an orange with it? Ever? (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220329/21ddc183398209610298fe486a6dab02.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220329/8abf300aa197661c58f79db40f8ae86a.jpg)

I did! Didn't took any pics, but was very pleased with how it worked:

Thanks guys, I'll try it for the first time (after many-many years owning 1-2 of these jewels)

Thanks for the comments guys. Think this knife is just perfect for EDC around the home or office. Also pairs great with any of the larger MT's that do not have scissors. Peeler does a surprising job on packaging tape. For my next project I am thinking about making a Spydernox version with some Wenger tools as well. Still in the planning phase for now.

One last thing, I forgot to say earlier. A nifty reason to have a Victorinox rambler or modify your executive like this is the super snug fit you get using the Leatherman bit adapter. Works great.

I don't know how I missed this earlier, but I love it!   :hatsoff:

I've always thought that an Exec with a combo tool would be nearly perfect.

I've got a generic hex bit coupler that fits on the 58mm combo tool (and the 91mm inline Phillips) pretty well. I like the coupler and limitless hex bit options way more than the few choices on the Cybertools.

I’d carry the executive far more with this configuration, not only the philips but the all important bottle opener, excellent mod pa

That looks useful, i wish i had skills to mod SAKs too so i could make mods like these.

Haven’t caught up on this thread for while but really enjoying it. The mod with the combo tool is fantastic - gives mini champ functionality without the ugly tool!! And that collection jaydar

Kkokkolis - Love the pic of your exec snuggled up with your Parker pens …I’m of a mind to start a ‘SAKS with pens’ thread….!

I've seen this one posted somewhere recently and really makes me want to make a MidiChamp version.
I'd add the combo tool, of course, but would also add the cotton picker as well as the emergency blade.  As a paracorder, I might would add the nail file/cleaner blade which I feel is stronger than the one on the executive.

The wife and I went on a local art crawl today, and the first stop had a display case with a bunch of pocket knives. They were all reasonably priced, but the main one that caught my eye was this little fella right here:

I've cleaned it up and given the edges a light reprofiling. Other than some gunk on the main blade and scuffs on the scales, it looked like it was mostly unused. I think I did alright for $20.

Some interesting Executive discussions going on over here. (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,91602.0.html)

And a significant update to the Wiki OP page (https://sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Orange+Peeler) - including a great new photo from Antti Lammi

PS. Really like the Atlanta Executive stuntzombie

PPS. @Jaydar - That Executive collection is outrageous!

The more I use and carry the Executive (and its cousin the Ambassador) the more it pains me that these models weren't more popular. Yeah, the 74mm is a bit larger than the 58's, but not so much that it won't still fit in the fifth pocket of a pair of jeans. Yet it gives you so much more handle to grab on to than the Classic based knives. In my mind, this should be the size that's hanging from everyone's keychains.

I agree.  I really wish that Victorinox would have made a MidiChamp in the 74mm line.

I really like the stainless Director version.  I have one NIB, but won't carry it.  Afraid to lose it, plus the chance of replacing it is low.  I have several used other, older 74mm models in stainless that I have around.  Some have good nail files.  I keep them by my favorite seats.  No keyring on any of them, and stainless might as well be greased ice as far as staying in my pockets.

A MidiChamp with some tools from the 58mm Victorinox and the Wenger Pocket Tool Chest.
