I just received my first SideClip today and figured it's about time we have a SideClip owners club. There is another older club for people who were part of a group buy but this club is for all SideClip owners :tu:
So let's see them
I'm pretty excited that I was able to get one of the polished models and in pretty good shape as well.
Handle date codes of 0404, 0404, 0204, 0504

Probably the best plier based pocket tool companion to a Swiss knife in my opinion. I have two, one with a bead blast finish, and one that is in pieces, having its bead blast finish improved. No pics at the moment, but I'll get some up when I can :salute:
-
Outstanding Stevey - what an excellent find! :like: Off to the calander thread now!
-
Great club Steve :like: I will join when I get a pic of mine and those are some great pics :dd: :like:

Question for you guys. Is the U shaped notch in the handle for the Universal tool adapter ?
-
Yes, and it works well :tu:
-
That's what I thought but wasn't 100% sure. Thanks
I've got a set of pentalobe security bits coming so I can tighten this one up a bit. The handles are pretty loose.
-
I'm in :D.
I own two of them (exactly identical, both NIB and same date codes 0298)
One of the nicest Leatherman tools ever made in my humble opinion.

Here's my two. I've put the tool adaptor in for Steve to see. :tu:
The polishing is very slow progress, as I've mentioned in another thread. I do a little each week, just to edge it a bit nearer. It's getting better, slowly but surely. :) The whole one has dates ranging from 0698 to 1098, and the one in bits is 0498 to 0598.
The second pic is why this tool (for me) is such a fantastic companion tool to a Swiss knife. A lightweight pocket clipped pliers tool, with those three drivers.
I once went to a friend's house after his step-father had taken his faulty kitchen lights down. My friend had bought new lighting units, but couldn't figure out how to wire them up. His house tools were useless, and while I had a pliers tool (I forget which) and a Swiss knife in my pockets, neither had a screwdriver which fit electrical connectors. The only tool I had which fit, was the nail file on a Vic Manager, and had to refit all his kitchen lights with just that. While some folks do deride LM's tendency to flood a tool with flat drivers, this one at least is very well sized, and I wished I had this when I did that job. The small driver is perfect for electrical connectors. :2tu: The Sideclip is better than the PST in this respect, as the small driver on that is too small for these connectors. Of course the long reach Phillips is great for the recessed screws often found in that kind of work too.
That was one of my (many) gripes with the Rebar. The best flat driver for that kind of work, is tapered, and so can't access recessed screws. It looks like they repeated the faux pas on the upcoming Free line too.

Nice pics TG and thanks Al for the Tool adapter pic :tu:

Some really nice pics already.
Interesting to see the OEM shiny one has a different plier head to the matt one.
Here are mine.

More awesomeness guys :dd: :like: I didn't get around to getting mine out last night but I will try to  :D

Very nice pic of a beautiful multitool, the old Leatherman tools are perfect when you want to make such beautiful pics (well, old Leatherman tools, new "old style" Leatherman tools like the Rebar and the ST300 and last but not least, the Swisstool).
Just my 2 cents ;).
-
Old school look does make some very nice pics :dd:

As some folks know I'm definitely a fan of the Sideclip. It's all Al's fault of course, he had an "extra" one he was willing to let go. :D
Annoyingly I also have to agree with him about it being a near perfect pliers companion to your SAK of choice.

Awesome pics, y'all!

Inspired by your somewhat recent acquisition of a polished SideClip, Steve, I finally polished up my beater SideClip. :)
Decided to go full SwissTool polish level. Every single piece was high polished using progressively finer compounds on an 8" 1750RPM wheel.

Stock SideClip to show what I started with, but imagine a satin SC with lots of scratches.
Obviously it isn't absolutely perfect, but it is pretty close(to Vic level anyway). :ahhh
I will say, I don't know what steel LM used for the handles, but it was harder to polish than SS watch case 316L for sure.

Great job removing the logo :tu:
They must have made a smurf ton of those Timberland branded SC as there are two on ebay at the moment and I've seen quite a few over the years.
-
Now you've said that, I don't feel so bad removing the logo... it's sometimes hard not to feel a little bit of a vandal doing stuff like that.
It's true what you say though, I've seen shed loads of them too... and they're going for silly money on ebay too... or at least that's what they're asking, but not necessarily getting.

Oh, date codes for mine: 0698, 0898, 1098 and 0199.

I wasn't completely happy with my clean-up job on the Sideclip. So, today, between jobs, I stripped it down completely, repolished and rebrushed the components and swapped out the medium screwdriver which was badly twisted (I love having a bit box!). I'm quite chuffed with the end result, it really is an elegant and wonderfully engineered tool.

Just got my first Sideclip for practically nothing $20. I love it when ppl don't clean the tools before they post them. Talk about lazy.
This tool is absolutely amazing! Why did Leatherman start making inferior tools? The tool stock on the drivers and opener are Superior to nearly every modern tool. Wtf
-
They are great. Congrats on the find HG. :like:
I just have one, and the fit and finish is first-class and I love the ‘snap’ of the tools when opening. :iagree:
And the pivots are user friendly!

It is a TS10(T10 5-pt security torx).
The bluing sounds interesting! :like:
Not sure how well it would hold up, but it would have a good patina with wear.

I’ve been using the sideclip for two days and i am in love. soooo skinny, i forget i have it. Used the can opener as a pry tool today and ot works amazingly. Cheers.
I also used the blade to carve a piece of wood into a mold for a Victorinox inspired Lighterbro. yea..thats right, a 58mm Rambler attached to a mini-bic lighter case...

Ok GLB...how did you get that tool so shiny? I must to to my tool. Must must.

Ok GLB...how did you get that tool so shiny? I must to to my tool. Must must.
1750RPM motor with 8" medium cloth polishing wheel and stainless steel compound. Disassembled tool completely and polished everything, even the inside of the handles to make it more rust resistant. I don't want an oil covered tool in my nice clothes pockets, so I rarely oil the polished Sideclip. No rust so far. The whole job was fairly easy with the 8" polishing wheel setup. :)
Be careful if you use a 3450RPM 6" wheel, as it makes the steel to hot and leaves polishing streaks wherever there are markings on the handles. If you have a 3450RPM wheel, be careful or use a variac to drop the RPM of the motor. I use a variac on the 1750 motor to make it slower for SAK scales and plastics.

From the pics, you are already starting with the shiny version SideClip (unlike the matte version glbm stated with) so it may not be as hard to get it polished :salute: metal polish may get you the results you want

Think I can do this with a Dremel and polishing attachment?
-
Since you have the non matte version I would just carefully sand off the logo. I did this to my Mini tool and it looks stock. Sand with the existing sander lines and it will look stock.

Thank you for mentioning that, Poncho! :salute:
Indeed, it will make his work immensely easier. :woohoo:
Think I can do this with a Dremel and polishing attachment?
Since you're beginning with a moderately polished version to start, I think you could definitely do it with a Dremel setup. 1" cloth Dremel wheels and some stainless steel polishing compound, and patience could result in a beautiful polish.

That would look nice too. :like:
But, that said, I think he is after the Swiss-style polish.

I would note that when undertaking a mirror polish on a Leatherman, don't let tiny imperfections lead you to over-polish. There is a point where polishing out tiny imperfections will make the surface look "wavy". Think of the surface like a wood table with veneer. Once you sand too deep, you have a lot of work to make it look good again with getting the primary surface evened out. :ahhh

The non matte versions are a lot rarer than the matte, seems a shame to polish one out.... IMO

I tend to agree as a collector. :iagree:

I guess these are out of production ? If so, I wish Leatherman can reintroduce it in a 'heritage' line.

SideCilp is a great little EDC, but I doubt LM will revisit it. Very different design (production) to the PST so would need new tooling. Best to look for a good used one...

The Kick is the very same tool but with updated plier head and Zytel handles :salute: Toolset has newer tools but the toolset is exactly the same and also the plier head is ground flat on the Kick on one side the same of the Sideclip
You also have the option of putting the clip on or removing it with the Kick :tu:

8) indeed! While the Kick is a good tool. It has no class like the SideClip. It is thicker and doesnt operate as smoothly as a SlideClip. Its a Ford Pinto compared to a Chevy Corvett. :D

Sadly yes. I like to carry and use (carefully) all my knives, but this example is unused and the sticker is a little fragile being 24 years old. Still looking for a second to carry.

eBay alert for the Leatherman Tool Adapter tripped today, low and behold there is a BNIB side clip with tool adapter in factory blister packaging for sale. Someone, save me from myself, and buy it before I give into that little voice and but it myself. :ahhh
-
My two second search shows a PST (mislabeled as a Sideclip) with Standard Tool Adapter.
Aren't you after the Universal?
-
I am after a universal, however as I understand it, if you grind the tip off of the standard adapter, it works just like the universal.
This purchase I would make would be more for the mint condition tool as a collectors item.
-
And then there were three, another SideClip came in today. Couldn't resist the low price. Apart from a couple tiny bits of rust this one is still as new. Gave it a cleaning and worked some oil into the gummed up pivot and here we are. :woohoo:

Congratulations! The oiling and fondling is part of the fun. Let us know how you like it, a SideClip and Micra would make a good carry together.

Didn't know this club existed...
A few months ago, in a chat with Nitram, I said that I always thought the Sideclip is actually an older Wingman/Sidekick.
After I had to go wash my mouth with soap and vinegar, he went full RAK and got me a Sideclip in de post...
The vintage (in lack of a better name) look and feel of the tool, combined with the clip and perfect QC, make this an outstanding tool.
The toolset is a bit dated, like on the PST, but it can still hold it's own.
A pleasure to look at, to fondle with, to use and to admire.

Thanks in advance!
EDIT: Metric preferred, but I can convert from Imperial if I need to.

The camera on the iPhone's being a bit annoying, the overall length is 65mm. I'll try again later with a macro lense.

I was a bit discouraged when I got it, it seemed a bit underpar compared to the PSTs in terms of opening and closing the tools.
And then I took it apart to reshape the clip, and discovered by trial something that most of you must know but I did not :P : not all 4 pivots are the same size, the one that holds the clip is significantly longer. The problem with my tool is that the pivots where in the wrong order, and once put back in the right one, everything is much, much better ! :D
I am really happy to get this tool ! In the future I may try to put some scissors instead of one of the 3 (!) flat screwdrivers, we'll see…

Enjoying the super pics guys!
A new and pretty much unused sideclip has joined my band. I'll leave it stock as its so clean. Nice to have incase I lose the other.
Unlike its well used younger shiny multi dated later example (12/03 to 02/04) this one is the matte finish earlier version.
It has the very beginnings of a few tiny spots of rust which I erased with a graphite pencil and wiped clean. Gave it a bath and a rub of acf50 to forever banish the red devil.
Poncho, the ease with which you assured Stephane the dates were all the same on that one immediately made me check my own. Yep the early matte ones are all the same! Mine is 02/98 also. Font of knowledge you are sir.

The wee bosses hand shot up with mammy pig whilst taking this photo during our stroll.
My zdp189 manbug is only 18g, it's bar none THE perfect keyring knife imo. Well paired with the side clip I feel.

(https://i.ibb.co/ZmNLrbW/20231121-163948.jpg) (https://ibb.co/gV6j8cz)
That's how anal I am right there.
It was making a click noise when handled . I'd say the clips downward retention was stressed at some point. The heat shrink has silenced it :pok:
Probably shouldn't show that but then again maybe there's more like me out there

I found this forum while looking for resources on figuring out a date of production for a different multitool, since I wanna get a touch more serious about collecting, but finding this topic got me to make an account, haha. Sorry if my forum etiquette is rusty, it's been a while... I got this sideclip from a pawn shop for something like $10 in roughly 2019. Date stamps 0498/0598/0698. You can tell it's well-loved; it's the tool I use most often. (The Benchmade next to it is my EDC, has been since 2017, and is also pretty well loved haha) [ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
