Title: Gerber MP650
Post by: Sam Lim on January 30, 2018, 03:15:30 PM
I chance upon a MP650 Evolution today.. Its new in the original packaging, very old and yellowed though.. The shop owner willing to give it to me for about $105USD. There's only the normal needle nose pliers and sheath. No other plier head. Bugging me the whole day.. Not too convince I should make the jump for it. I think it's there for who knows when and I believe I can further negotiate the price down... Hmm..

Lol.. Cos for this tool, I know mostly I will not be using it. It's going straight to my shelf... Looking at the prices when this pops up on ebay, it looks like a very good deal..

Btw, in that odd ball shop, I saw a Variant of the Mp600 that I have not even heard of. It have a special 'L' shaped tool in it. The rest of the implements are pretty much a standard Mp600. If I remember reading it correctly, it is some sort of Variant for "horse hoof mantainence"..

That shop owner is rather old. I am quite sure he have no idea what he have or are selling in the shop. His prices tag for MTs are like from 10 yrs ago or even more. Some older people here, have the mentality that "I rather hug it to the grave than to sell you at this price" .. You know what I mean.

I don't believe what I'm reading...  :o :o :o :o
The L shaped tool is a hoofpick and the model is called the Trailrider. It is virtually as rare as the MP650 series.
You  are so  lucky. I spent over 2yrs trying to find one. Goodness me do not waste a moment, Go Grab both now!!

If he has multiples, I would definately be interested in buying also..seriously.

WOW incredible to think.  :ahhh :ahhh

U$105 is a great deal for a NIB MP650, while U$100 is an OK price for an MP600 trailrider variant

Hmm. I dun know if I should do it. I am more keen on the MP650.. But once I jump, that will start another treasure hunt for the many pliers..  :ahhh

The Trailrider, I am most likely not going for it. Seems like a big premium for the 'L' tool that I have no use for..

It's boxed.. Or rather in those hard plastic package. The packaging is really old and yellow though.. Lol.. I was waiting if you would asked. I tried to search for this model and your thread in MTO appeared in 2015..  :)

I am actually quite a distant from you though.. I am not too sure about the shipping. It could get ridiculously high...

No worries then
But, if I may just say this...regret is a painful thing. I'm pretty certain you will never ever come across a chance again like this to grab that Trailrider. It is unbelievably hard to find used, let alone new!
I think you'll kick yourself in years to come.
The MP650 if it only has one head is much less of a find, it is a good find...but tracking down those heads will be a long a laborious road.
Have you considered buying and using as future swap stuff.

The SS DET (cap crimper) MP650 pliers are almost impossible to find except as part of a full military MP650 kit, but all the other plier heads are relatively easy to find, but can be expensive, especially the cable cutter and technician (fisherman) heads.

I made the jump! Bought the MP650. Theres only one head now. I placed an order on ebay for a blunt nose... One big surprise that never occurred to me.. The pliers doesn't slide back?.. I only notice that when I saw the giant sheath at the back... well no biggie.. just wasn't expecting this.. Straight to the shelf!

Few other finds in the store. Multiple old school sheaths at just $7USD a piece. The Tool adaptor was at about $25, I bargained it down to $15  :D.

Another surprise!

Its very unfortunate that the owner decided to repack 2 of them as the package was broken..
Theres another one that's still in the original clamshell. but its cracked somewhere.. Its a home for I dun know how many cockroaches for god knows how long... I saw many legs....Yes, legs.. Old molted exos of mini cockroaches I believe...

Why does the 650 not flick?

What is the mechanism where the flick buttons usually are?

Instead of the plier sliding mechanism the MP650 has two fixed position clips inside the handles which retain/release the different plier heads.
This means there is a lot of wasted space inside the handles which could be used to install several longer component tools.

Edit:  There are two versions of the MP650 handles, the "Military" version with springs to help splay the handles, and the "Civilian" version which doesn't have the springs.  Note that the retaining clips in the "Civilian" version are quite fragile and easy to break, the "Military" version has a different (much more robust) design clip.

HA! I think most people thinks it operates just like a standard multiplier. So do it, initially. Until I got this. There's no track/rail for plier head to slide in and out, it's fixed. It's a full size pliers!

There are quite a bit of ancient sheath there. Even new leather sheath for tool adapter. The hard boxy type. I also saw a duo pouch victorinox sheath. It comes in olive green and brown/black, can't remwmber. Its seems a little plasticky water proof kinda material.

This actually saddens me more.. I know they have been there for a very very long time. It just shows how much interest or lack of interest these things are over here.

The first version is more common than the 2nd ("universal") version, but you do see both for sale on ebay from time to time.  Both versions usually sell for higher prices these days compared with a few years ago.

I think it's there for who knows when and I believe I can further negotiate the price down... Hmm..

OK, Sam If you are still able to get your hands on that Trailrider Gerber, I would love to get my hands on it. I forgot it was in my carry-on - and it was seized/confiscated by TSA. I miss it ALOT and there was and is no finer balance in a hoof pick. Obviously I am new at this forum so please excuse if I miss entered something.

Very unfortunately, I grabbed the last good one for a trade. The other 2 are really crappy with rust spots, stains.

I am actually quite late to the party.. Starting the insane collecting roughly a little more than a year back. I remembered my first was a powerlock, standard issue for the Military here. But we have to dekit that when we leave service.. First own purchase was a switchplier 2.0.. Not happy with it. Then I got a Powerassist. Awesome tool. At that time I didn't know leatherman. I guess they are not that popular here cos they are crazy expensive. I didn't understand why should I be paying so much for a leatherman. But acquiring the first(kick) , then the second(wave) , I got sucked into the whole thing.. Finding the 650 and trailrider in a very old and run down shop was indeed like finding the holy grail.

I got very lucky. I stumbled upon the full Military MP650 kit online while not even looking for it. I understand they are very rare these days.

As for collecting Gerbers...I started off thinking they only made 4 different Leatherman models...and the same would go for Gerber. Yeah...that notion didn't last all that long.

I saw the different plierheads on MTO and I was dreaming- maybe I can get some. Hard to find but I get some MP 650 plierheads this week - I will post pictures soon.

That’s the reason why I collect - going from shop to shop and never give up. 100 times the owner says: Sorry, no.
But sometimes there’s a „yes“ :tu:

You are definitely off to a good start.  :tu:

The standard SS needle nose pliers are usually not super difficult to find (most MP650's came with them, and they were also sold as a separate accessory: part # 48273).  But of course some sellers put a high price on them.

The SS needle nose pliers with cap crimper are much harder to find - AFAIK they were only ever sold as part of the large military MP650 kit in the large sheath,

Yes, I think the standard pliers are not the biggest problem. The cap crimper version should (like you said before) be harder to find. I like the packaging and the style of the older Gerber stuff...

Yep, interesting and promising concept, but the final execution was a tool with a lot of unused space in the handles.

Went through several wire wheels on the dremel as well. :ahhh

The military version in pretty much new condition with just one ss needle nose. The Ebay seller probably not very sure what he's selling.. Slapped it right off his shelf!  :D :D :D

The split locating clips for the plier heads inside the Civilian handles (no springs) are very prone to breaking, so be careful when removing heads.

I just posted these pictures on another thread inquiring as to just what I had. After reading the answers I did some research and found this thread. Hope no one minds me posting on it as it is an old thread.
Bought this at a local flea market today from a friend who looks for knives for me.I'm more of a knife collector than a multi-tool person but have quite a few anyway."Anything with an edge";that is my motto. It only came with the blunt nose and regular needle nose.I don't think I'll be looking for any other heads after seeing some of the prices for them.
I won't say what I paid for it because it might sound like I was bragging.

Glad you didn't have to pay the crazy eBay prices! I got lucky and got mine for about half of eBay normal prices, but it was still around $80.

I just noticed that the cap crimper you have is black. Oddly enough, the one that came with the military kit isn't. Curious.

That is a "Cable Cutter" head, designed for cutting copper wires (anything harder will damage the cutting head).

Well ... after four years into oblivion, the 650 thread is back!!! :woohoo:
I know it can be impractical, that having to carry separate heads, and bit kit, and jigsaw blades, and whatnot can be too much to some BUT, it was one of "my grails". Found it at a good price, and not much work to be done (reposition springs; clean; hone knife; make needlenose pliers head). Came in the mail today and, 2 hours later, this is the result!
[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]     [ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]     [ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

Now the quest begins for getting a sheath, fisherman's and cable cutting heads (and might make a replaceable cutters, needlenose head just for laughs)! :viking:
