Title: Diamond file mod for Rebar
Post by: SteveC on July 21, 2016, 06:50:41 PM
Diamond file for the Rebar II.  proof of concept.

I've had this Wave file for a while and had been meaning to give this a go. What was holding me back was not knowing if I could drill through the file with the drill bit I had on hand. I remembered that I had a bit my brother had given me when I helped him remodel his kitchen. We burned up a bunch of my masonry bits trying to drill through the tiles on his floor to anchor the island cabinets. Anyway he found this bit for drilling through glass tiles and gave me one. I figured I would give it a try and to my surprise it cut through the file with no problem. I drilled it from both sides. I used my dremel with a cut off disk to cut and shape and notch the file. Cleaned up on my bench grinder.

drill bit like this

Unfortunately the regular side of this file is a bit worn out but I just wanted to see if this would work and it does. It rubs a little bit on the handle when opening and closing but not too bad.

OK now that is what the Rebar should have been :dd:

That's what a lot of tools should have been.
Maybe it's time for a Rebar 2.0, or maybe 3.0, since there's a knifeless rebar around.

For fun I decided to see how the PST II file would work in the Rebar.  The pivot size is the same as the Rebar. It fits and would only require slight widening of the notch for the lock although it did lock as is just not well. The other would be remove a little V section at the bottom to clear the locking bar ramp when closed. Again it works as is just sticks up a bit when closed.

I think if I was to do it again I would use the PST II file as it is much less fitting involved than the Wave file.

Some of the latter PST II and Pulse files lacked the hook sharpener though ;)

But I agree it would be better with the groove :tu:

Obi1 asked me if I would mod a file and can / package opener for him. So he sent me a Wave file and a can opener . My drill bit sustained a chip in one of the blades drilling this one. It's some pretty hard steel

If you're willing Steve, I may have to commission you to mod my PST II file....

I would be willing M although it's very simple mod.  If you have a Dremel with a cut off disk it could be done in a matter of minutes.

I test fitted again today and took some pics this time.

Here is the PST II file next to the Rebar file.  Marked with black sharpy is material that would need to be removed.

Here is how it fits with no mods. It actually doesn't lock like I thought but it does fit as is.

That file looks more fitting to the Rebar chasis and the groove is the icing on the cake :D

If only the nailnick was on the other side :-\ but shouldn't be to hard to get out still :tu:

I do have a cheap dremel, but no experience with the cutting aspect.  I may use your pics to mark mine and give it a shot.  So you do have to remove some of the little notch for it to lock right?

Yes, you will have to make the notch bigger for it to lock and also so it can open far enough to be inline with the handle. Take your time and I think you'll be fine. The best way to mark it is to lay the Rebar file on top and use it to mark with a fine tip Sharpie. You can use a drill bit to help line up the holes while you mark it.

I decided to use the file from my old original PST to check to see if it would lock. I didn't want to use my diamond file but they are the same profile.

Notch

Lock up

(http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k115/asc67/Files%20leatherman/DSC09685_zpsidh08fzv.jpg) (http://s86.photobucket.com/user/asc67/media/Files%20leatherman/DSC09685_zpsidh08fzv.jpg.html)

I made the notch just a hair wider than the Rebar file taking a bit more off the back where the rounded portion is.  The file does lock up
with just a little play. It is a really hard to deploy without a nail nick. I think it would work better to swap positions with the the knife blade. You would then have the cut out in the handle for the file and the nail nick would still be on the right side for the knife blade.

The PST/PST II file fits but has to be grinded on a little to make it work properly  :salute: I have one of these files in a Blast and had to grind it similar to what would fit the Rebar :tu: due to the way it is made for the PST II it slips out of the lock even after grinding but if the tool is closed that isn't a problem, plus this type of file never locked in the tools they were designed for anyways :D

I am actually the owner of the file that Steve cut to fit now and it has been great :woohoo: it fits very well, locks up nice and it really is hard to beat the diamond file :tu: :like:
