Thanks to all you merchants of poverty :pok: :pok: :D :D , the Swisschamp found it's way onto my must have list ::) ::) :D :D.
So when I got my Gerber Recoil I noticed the seller also sold lots of SAK's , he did not have any Swisschamps for sale but I thought I would ask if he had any 'out back' :D, he had X3 :o :D. So for $28us I thought what the heck , it's what I do (attract tools that do more than one thing :D).
Initially I thought wow you are a wide old sucker, I always think of a hamburger with the lot when looking at the Swisschamps side profile :D :D. As I inspected it , a mighty challenge as it was filthy & full of grit, the wide one was quite neglected externally & internally had a twisted screw driver >:(.

After consulting with DR NKB(SAK Trauma Consultant Surgeon) a plan of action was enacted. Neil chucked this thread my way http://edcforums.com/index.php?topic=27684.0 (http://edcforums.com/index.php?topic=27684.0) courtesy of Tinman. The fellow in the thread must of worked for NASA at one stage , he falls on 'the thorough side of the fence' ::) :D. I modified his approach a little/lot. I started of with a 360 grit wet/dry sandpaper sanding down the scales one way like I was patting a cat (not a back & forth sanding motion). I graduated too a 600 grit paper using the same sanding action & then finished it with a 1200 grit paper. Ideally the finishing sanding would of been done with a 2000+ wet/dry sandpaper but I could not find any at the 3 hardware stores I went too :ahhh.I then finished with a automotive polish ,the plastic polish the other fella used costs around $30 here in OZ :o :o
The finished product

I am well chuffed with the results & have a real soft spot for my Swiss Army 'Big Mac'. I would like to get a sheath for it at some stage. ::) :D :D

There's a labour of love. Me I'd have swapped the scales but then where would the job satisfaction come from :D Nice work Mat :tu: Hope it serves you well.

Great job Mat, far more work than I've ever put into polishing scales and a far better result. :tu: Did you manage to sort out the driver?

Project 'straight & narrow' will hopefully get off the ground tomorrow ;)

Tinman I tried everything I had :o :o ::) :D. 3 car polishes I have had for over 10 years ::) ::) :D. I did buy a cheap Kitten brand polishing wax NO.1 . That was not fine enough really. Ideally I would of had a 2000+ grit paper & a finishing type polish.

You sure you didn't just put a new bun on that burger?!
It does look great though, well worth the elbow grease :tu:

It makes me feel guilty actually. I've taken scales in much better condition than those and tortured and abused them just for fun. I had no idea you could restore them

Wickedness.... but then again you do nice things with wood so it's ok to hurt them a bit ;)

Neil pointed out to me earlier that I haven't done a SAK mod for ages, except the scales for the meet ones.
I might see if I can do something this weekend I reckon, I've got a bunch of parts, brass, and a bit of time on my hands, so why not?
-
Fantastic job salvaging those scales! When I first started reading this post and saw the pic, I thought for sure it was replacement time.
Oh, for really fine sandpaper, go to an auto parts store instead of a hardware store.

and you've got more fodder from Dennis that should arrive shortly.
:pok: But your not allowed to play until you vacuum the garage. That's both for fire prevention and so you don't get kicked out :P

You promised you wouldn't tell :twak:
It's true, everything in my garage has about a 1/4" of powdered oak on top of a reasonable layer of mahogany coating it. It hasn't gone unnoticed by SWMBO either. :-[

Tut tut. Now I have visions of SWMBO making you wear a nice pinny whilst putting you to work cleaning up the place!
