Two Gerbers today; a Recoil and a Multi-Lite.
The Recoil is definitely fun, and more practical than I think it gets credit for, but it's also a long way from perfect. The limited screwdriver selection it the biggest problem IMO, though the fact all the tools are pretty difficult to get out is also an issue.
Good to know, thanks for the info. I threw a bid out, maybe I will get it cheap.
a little off topic but I have a Gerber related fact for you Gerberites
i'm not known to carry a Gerber nor do I own many, or any decent ones worth naming, but they are very 'tactile' !!!
I have noticed, despite her frequent screams of "for **** sake stop clicking that bloody multitool or I swear to god i'm going to kill you!" (or something similar) my Wife seems to find Gerber the most annoying by far !
if I fiddle with a MP400 or 600 or even a humble 'suspension' the noise gets to her much quicker than any other tool I've spotted >:D
:b2t:
Have you tried the Dime mate? I didn't mind the Clutch, but the Dime is a better tool IMO.
Still sticking with the Recoil and Multi-Lite for the moment.

Well, today is the first day of real work for the MP 600, it's duties range from paint, drywall, plumbing and whatever else these college kids throw at it. The lack of the saw will be it's down fall, but the " major " will serve as back up.

As per usual: MP 600 "Scout" (I believe it´s called - Diamond file, scissors and Awl) modded with a Bluntnose head.
Nice. :tu: Much as I like the MP600 it's the 400 that sees a lot more use from me.
Nice. :tu: Much as I like the MP600 it's the 400 that sees a lot more use from me.
Yeah me to, MP 600 is a big tool to lug around.
It´s best to look out for a few blades fitting the now rather oldfashioned shank (called "U-Shank", I believe) and either carry some as backup or plug in a wood saw if that is what you usually need.
Yeah, that's a new one on me.
Anyone like the crucial ? Would you edc it ?
Yeah, that's a new one on me.
Anyone like the crucial ? Would you edc it ?
I've only had a play with the Crucial, but I wasn't blown away. :-\ Just didn't feel comfortable in my hand for one thing, but nothing about it made me go wow. Given that the Octane is the same kind of money I'd pick that every time.
I'm always in two minds about the Strata. From what I've seen it's well made and well thought out, but it it's never really 'done' it for me. Not enough to shell out any significant amount of money anyway. ;)

That one was a display model, got it for $20-$25. At that price I couldn't pass it up. ;)
Carrying my blunt nosed MP600 Pro today.
Giving the Diesel a rest for now and have been carrying my modified MP400 today.
Hang on a sec, I've got a pic somewhere.\
Here we go:
Basically I lost the blade and can opener then added a file and awl.
Since I took that shot I've also added a thin lanyard loop from a LM Blast.

Of course not mate. :tu: It does works well with a SAK in my experience, something like a Camper or perhaps a Farmer.

So what tool did you use to remove the pins ? I was thinking small vise grips with a rag .

I don't think I even bothered with the rag. :D You probably know this but I'll say it anyway; you will only need one pair of grips as one end of the pivot is held in place by the frame anyway. If you look at my two pics, the first one has the 'held' side showing, the second has the removable head visible. You can easily tell as the removable side has slight circular indentation the head is sitting in. :)
Here is the video that parnass found a while ago that shows what I'm talking about (though I dispute the need for a special tool ;))
A lot of talking but fast forward to about 8:20 to get the relevant bit.
I made a "special wrench" out of a broken MP 600.
It looks like this:
Sadly, the second one already does have a good home at soem otehr forum member, otherwise I coudl have helped out.

If I run across a badly mistreated Gerber again, I think I´ll make another set of those.
In the making:
Brilliant !!!!!!! Thumbs up

My MP600.
I'm really liking it so far. :tu: It's comfortable to use, and I'm really liking the blunt nose pliers! I did find out that the cap lifter is pretty much useless for lifting the caps on beer bottles though. Luckily I had a Vic close by! :DMy MP600.
How are you liking it? I was carrying my MP600 Pro Scout today. Got a fair bit of use out of the pliers and drivers at work.....
MP600 again today. :D
My first 400. I have two BO MP600's with needle nose and blunt nose. Great tools all around. But you already knew that.
News to me, don't they make baby food or something? >:D :D :rofl:They also make toilets... Guess that just means they can take any smurf thrown at them!! :D
You guys inspired me. Mp 600, huntsmanCool pic!! :tu:

MP600 Pro Scout again today. Solved my driver problem by adding the LM bit adapter card with spare bits to the Gerber sheath. Blasphemy? Maybe to tool purists, but I like the added functionality in a slim form factor.Nothing wrong with that. The LM bits are a genius invention. I wish they would expand availability to security Torx.
My newest addition arrived (according to tracking info :mail:) so I will be switching to my new BO Bluntnose MP600 with Carbide inserts when I get home :tu:.

Argh! Not the punishment chicken! :ahhh
I did just remember that my Flik was sitting in my bag, it just didn't actually do anything. :D Oh, and my Octane is sitting in a toolbox at work, but again didn't see any action. Am I off the hook?

Maybe... Did you carry the bag? If yes, then you technically 'carried' the Flik... :D
I carry a Gerber E.A.B almost every day.Joel, that looks pretty cool except for the serrations.
its also the only Gerber I own.

MP600 Urban Scout going strong again today.
BO BN Original Multiplier
MP600 Urban Scout going strong again today.
Does the scout come with blunt nose or did you switch them out with mp600, I tried putting blunt nose out of a mp600 into a mp400 but that didn't work. I would really like a scout with BN.

It's a BN MP600 with carbide cutters that has a some tools from the Pro Scout added to it.
Handle 1
Combo Blade, small flat, medium flat with cap lifter, large flat, file
Handle 2
Scissors, Philips, blade exchanger
I ditched the lanyard and can opener as I have no use for either. Went with the combo blade as a backup (I carry a dedicated folder or SAK with plain edge).
MP600 Urban Scout on duty again. Been experimenting with carry methods so today it's in a Leatherman sheath .

The gerber sheath is okay, i took the velcro out of mine and put in a snap.. I do like the softer sheath just because it lays a little flatter.

Pro scout , having a hard time leaving this one at home. Perfect work MT.Great tool. :tu: It's my default multi. Can't decide what to carry? Pro Scout. Today though I'm carrying my Strata. It's also excellent, VERY underrated IMO. Yes, it's a Chinese-made one, but it's one of my go-to examples to show that China does not always equal crap when it comes to tools. I got it for under $30 several years ago, quite possibly the best $30 I've spent toolwise.....

Nice. The Diesel is actually one of the few Gerber tools I haven't even handled. What do you think of it? Today at the store I took Mr. Pinchy for some playtime. :)
Love it I can't seem to leave it at home I also have the bit kit with it.
I do electronics at work " traffic signals " so it comes in handy day in and day out.
I ought to do a story line like mr. Pinchy's. Day by day doings ...

I like the looks of that Moment, very snappy looking. 8)
Thoughts on the MP400 ? I have one sitting in my pocket right now.
Now while it's no Vic Spirit it is a very good Multitool. If the tool load out on it suits you then go for it.
Good scissors , can and bottle opener. But the drivers are a little short but I have always found them to fit the screw heads well. The wire cutters are very good BUT there's no hard wire cutting notch so while they are excellent on soft wire you could damage them on fish hooks etc. if your re-wiring a household plug then they are fine for that.
Lighter then a spirit or Wave , I usually EDC mine when not at work and carry a wave for work.
What, no pic?
I will let it slide since it is coffee related. :)

I have to admit I've been on a bit of a classic LM drive for a little while. I will return to my old faithful Gerbers at some point in the near future. Honest. :D
Oh, what great taste you got! :D
I think I even have a period correct sheath I´ll include.
I am trying to find a good Gerber Bear Grylls knife which I have seen on the discovery channel and used by bear grylls in it outdoors survival ?

OK, so in order to end Leatherman's stranglehold on my MT carrying habits of late, I've decided it's well past time to get myself another classic that I've had my eye on for ages now: A Gerber Multiplier. (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,58323.0.html) I'm getting a very odd sense of MT history being played out in in my trouser pockets! :ahhh

After carrying my Flik today I get home to find a package with my Multiplier in it. :mail: bye-bye Leatherman, hello Gerber. :D
I haven't carried a Gerber for quite some time, so today I have my BO BN MP600 on me.
Guess I should add a pic, eh! :DNice.... I'd really like to get one of those to give it a go

after opening both of these at the same time, I just realised that they are not the same model......
maybe... the one on the left, camo, has the exchangeable saw blade
and as promised:
the silver one has a pat. pend. number.
Good to hear of a Multiplier still getting a good workout. :tu: IF you ever felt the need to replace it an MP400 would feel closer in size than the 600 does. :)

Wasn't exactly carrying it, but my Gerber multi-plier resides in an EDC bag that contains items I may need when I'm participating in historical re-enactments and that includes the Renaissance festival where I was today when I needed to repair a wagon. Mr. Pinchy turned a bolt while I held the nut on the other side with a Leatherman Wave. Not enough hands to take pictures of both tools in action so I took a working picture of the wave for the March challenge, but here's Mr. Pinchy in the wagon after I removed the bolt.Pretty sure that isn't time-period appropriate... :pok:

As far as I know that is an accurate reproduction of a late 15th century little red wagon. We rent them at the festival for parents to haul their kids around. We call them "Dragon Wagons," because you drag them.
Zman, what do you think of the carbide cutters?
Sent from my SM-G920R4 using Tapatalk
Would you say the MP600 cutters survived the best overall with most of the stuff that was thrown at it?
Yes however "survived the best" is only one aspect of using cutters.
cable ties - not good
thin wire: cutters - good, hw notch - not good
thick wire - good
power cord - five or more cuts, individual wire: cutters - not good, hw notch - not good
bike brake cable - no problem, bike brake cable stripped - not good
HT wire, hw notch - good, hard to do, two hands needed
I would only recommend them for cutting hobby wire.
Compared to the others tested I would rate them last for cutting performance, comfort and effort required to use.
I would carry a BN MP600 just for the plier head but I would almost always pair it to another MT with better cutters.
Thanks Zman. So basically they're not that great, which I think is the common consensus here anyway. Not that I do any real cutting typically anyway, but still good to know.

They would likely be sufficient for my usage anyway, but I have a regular BO plier MP600 on the way for the pliers, and maybe the serrated blade to hold me over in the meantime. Thanks Zman. We're spoiled for choice sometimes.
If there were no others around I'm sure you could make them work.
I'll also add that I haven't broken them yet.

You're welcome sir. The edge could do with a sharpen. And it's a dude blade. 8)Oh it seems sharp enough to me  Sliced some paper smoothly. My sharpening-fu is a bit weak, as all I have is a pocket sharpener. Does the trick on plain edges, but I'm not great with serrations. Not that I heavily use my blades to really need to sharpen them.

I'd like to put a saw in my MP600 but where to get one ?I stole it from a Diesel. I had to file the retention bump down a bit (it was impossible to open before I did that, now its just kinda hard), but otherwise it just drops in.
Im waiting for a diamond file from lowtech, and I think im going to try my hand at making and awl out of the can opener. Then it will be the perfect companion to my folders. My modded MP600BN. this is very close to my perfect EDC, just one more part and one more mod.....

Love the color coordination, MM! The Crucial looks like it pairs well with Dime. Does that all fit in the sheath?
The Dime pairs very well with the Crucial. Dime has knife, modified file (Leatherman), scissors, clam package opener. The Crucial FAST has slot screwdriver, #2 phillips screwdriver, knife.
The sheath came with a Juice I got. It holds the 1/4 drive stuff. The Dime clips on to the "D" ring on my 5.11 pants and the Crucial clips on to my pocket.

Is the mp400 bladeless for legal carry ?
Thanks mags, I figured the serrated blade is enough and I seem to always carry a knife of some sort so I would rather have a great awl than another PE blade.

Bladeless MP400 together with companion SAK Wenger Professional 1.71.11 - no tool overlap!
Unless you are in my line of work, where it is the most used size as it fits the set screws in microphones and connectors. Along with the ever present Phillips. :D

How do you like that Freehand? I've stumbled across a couple online (Fliks too) and while I've always been really tempted to grab one, the stubby drivers have always managed to keep me from pulling the trigger.

They are neat and still useful, but are more of MT collector pieces than something I'd choose to use. The one hand pliers require two steps to fully engage on the Flik and Freehand.
The drivers are only useful on surface screw heads, since the reach and ergonomics are among the worst of all MTs. The Freehand has a sort of "pry tool", while the Flik has a more useful wood saw.
I wouldn't recommend either as daily user tools, but are certainly something a Gerber collector will want to have. :tu:

Thanks for the info GBLM :salute: I've developed a real soft spot for Gerber MT's - they each have their own personalities kind of. I find Vic and LM a bit lacking in that. I realise that sounds a bit wierd :facepalm:Completely understood and I couldn't agree more.

LM and Vic seem to take their plier based multitool designs VERY seriously. Which is a good thing when it comes to reliability and longevity. But, there is something to be said and liked about some of Gerber's quirky and absurd designs. Some are even "fun" to have, even if they are not actually good in any way. :tu:
The Flik, Freehand, Steady, Balance, Radius, and a few more qualify. Gerber has some "serious" tools (like your 400 for example), but even those stand out from the crowd. :)

stole my words, :pok:
Gerber makes extremely odd and curious tools that move away from the typical MT designs :ahhh, the Octane, Grappler, Cable Dawg and Crucial also fill a niche that no other tools really reach, ::), and the MP1 and non-pliers tools are also oddities with cool features :tu:
I'd love to have a try at all of them, the FLIK has always been on my watch list but the prices they ask for it are usually stratospheric
Pinchy got some pocket time today with the Buck 110 and SAK. Still a great tool once to learn how to use it without getting your palm pinched. :D

My son and daughter got me this for Father's Day. I have been on vacation this past week so I have not put it through its paces.
It seems like Gerbers challenge to the wingman sidekick platform. About the same weight has a pocket clip but all outside tools except the pliers. I have had it on all day at work and so far it rides well.
Carried this one today. Not by choice >:D My Leatherman is being fixed. i have looked at least a dozen or so pictures of MP600: not one of them has an awl like this one..At least that is what I call it. The triangle tool. On the back side it is ground down to an edge.and It is super sharp. .
I'm carrying Gerber for Throwback Thursday today. MPT and 500.

Had the 400 with me today.
Gave it a "new" diamond file from a pst2. Found that the tools from the PSTs have sufficient material to nicely mod them into a MP.
Made a new pivot hole for the wave file to fit in the 600. Found that using a diamond grinding ball with dremel works very well to put a whole through. Hole took less than 10mins.

Awesome Gerbers, y'all! :like:I like it The phillips and wire stripper are very good, the knife is sharp. The awl is pointy and works well as a scraper and to deburr softer materials. The scissors work even though they are quite short. The file/ruler works, as does the cap lifter. And nice to have springloaded pliers It's better to carry in the pocket instead of using the pocketclip as it take up most of the opening of the pocket which makes it hard to get anything else without taking the tool out first. The NXT (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181026/641614fc9432036ede3b77ce1c77a263.jpg)How are you liking the NXT, RF?
I have carried mine a few times and like it so far. I found the LM Wingman to be better overall, but then again the Wingman gotten more expensive. The NXT seems to be a very smooth operating tool in the price range. :)
Hi people. This is my first post. I like Gerber. Since the last 1.5 years i carry a Mp600 basic model(with small mods), 5 days a week at work. I work in maintenance of small apartmennts. I think they should have had them at walmart with the SS versions. Being at Wal-Mart has made the EAB a popular tool for sure. :)
Besides, if Gerber produced the advertisement for their website, they'd show a Lumberjack cutting Redwoods down with the BO EAB.

:like: As with the Snap On MP600, I've always wanted one of those, but couldn't justify the cost. But, it's worth it given the steel upgrade from 420HC (standard Gator) to S30V. That makes 3 steel choices for one model--154CM, S30V, and 420HC.Nice! Yeah, the Gator is a very comfortable folder to carry. I slip it into a pocket, forgetting it's there. I've seen folks drill a lanyard hole through the rubber handle.

Bladeless for work. :multi:
Great use. Impromptu jobs like this are exactly why we carry MTs. :like:O can't agree more! Well said!
Back with the SS NN MP600, being versatile and useful. My mother's mailbox lid had seen better days and wasn't latching onto the 'box, and I didn't brought my regular tools; so, the MP helped in the making of a clip with: cutting a piece of aluminum strip; drilling the screws' holes, both on the aluminum strip and mailbox; bending/forming the clip; deburring the strip and lid's notch; screwing all together; shortening and deburring screws. All done, and happy with the results. :woohoo: :tu: :like:
Nice kit and picture, Spartan19!

I had no idea it would be this early. After the hottest day of the year on Sunday (35C) we hit a new record low for September not even 48hours later :ahhh
I can hear you, man; that only happens here during winter, in the mountainous regions ( mid to low 60°s) but, you get acustomed to it and learn to enjoy year round summer weather. Not bad. :tu:I used to work with boots, full uniform, radio, my equipment and helmet in 38°C in 80% air humidity.
I promised you snow and here it is:You've won the "first Snow pic" challenge

Nice one, Gareth, and it appears to be sound and complete! :tu:
Gerber certainly has some interesting concepts. They don't always work, but they always try something new! :like:100% agree!
That is great to know; maybe it can be considered as a permanent "firefly mode" .
I'm wondering if the bulb could be replaced with a LED? ... this of course if it is a user and not part of a collection.
Ok, thanks; good to know. Would've been great if it were "whiter/brighter".

Nice carries and pictures, Anti and HeviThanks Juan! (Nice sculpture)
Nice to see the mug again, Hevi, but I miss the beach going kombi!!!! Kidding aside, did you made the organizer? Liking the color, the pockets arrangement, and the supple leather...
Thanks Hevi. Great leatherwork, and good carry for today! Thanks Juan!
:tu:
I was a DIME guy today.Laughing a lot. Your description of the Dime was very funny.
I actually try to break myself of carrying it, because it is so ugly! It’s like carrying a metal fetus spawned by the Alien and the Terminator, but it works great and has never seen a fifth pocket it’s too big for!
But the addictor is that goddamn little blister pack opening tool! It is the best damn tool in all of multitool-dom...at least until we are all put in our Amazon Matrix pods, fed illusions of multi tools by tubed nutrients, and blister packs as we know them are obsolete!
Flatiron today, still waiting my new CenterDrive to arrive

I think that if you deal with nuts and bolts often, then this is a good MT to carry. I don't use it often, for I find needlenose pliers more useful for me at work and I carry a Knipex Cobra 125mm in my pocket all the time. But I do grab my DualForce when assembling stuffOk, thanks for the info Adam
