Title: Advice on Sak for Baby Hawkchucker
Post by: hawkchucker on November 26, 2008, 12:41:04 AM
OK I have decided that BH will be getting her first SAK in the spring for next years camping. Ya see she loves to have me make fire pokey sticks, and walking sticks for her, sooo I decided maybe I will get her her first SAK and have Pink micarta scales put on it for her.

But now the delema. Do I get her a My first Vic? or another model? The MFV would really only suit her for so long but is safer whereas the reg Sak I could get her something she will have forever. She will only be allowed to use it with me, and I would hold it with her Handy dandee tool collectkion, so The safety is not a real issue.

So If I decide to go with a standard SAK what model? And what other mods? I was thinking a little sterling plate in the scale with her initials and mine.

Thoughts?

if you were seriously thinking about a mfv, then get her a swisstool. It has the same blade as an mfv, and will last her a lifetime.

I will get her her first SAK and have Pink micarta scales put on it for her.

I think that is a wonderful idea and I think that the MFV PLUS (adds saw blade) would be the idea item for her.

As far as using it forever since one day she will be one of us (quick escape with her now) she will have plenty of other SAKs to use and collect.

This is just proof again that the SAK gene is passed.

Actually I have ruled out the plus. Believe it or not the saw scares the bejesus out of me for her. I think the saw is more dangerous to a kid than the blade.

really, because even if the saw slips, it will do pretty no damage to her. It's happened to me all the time.

Agreed.  Its much easier to rip a bit of skin with that saw than blood let with the knife.  I know  :-[

I wouldn't worry about her out growing the round tip blade. It can do more than people give it credit for and if she really wants to in later years its quite a simple mod to reshape it with a point.

How old is she out of interest?

What about a Tinker,Tinker Small or a Super Tinker?  Most kids don't need a corkscrew.  If you are looking for something that will do a bit more I think the Mountaineer is often overlooked and gives her the metal saw rather than the rather sharp-toothed wood saw.

She just turned 7 yesterday. I know It sounds like she is being rushed into it, but she does a lot of tinkering around the house with me.

7 isn't to young.  I had my first knife about then it wasn't a nice SAK but it was still sharp.  I've come across some 7 year olds I'd trust with an axe, I've also encountered some 25 year olds I wouldn't trust with a butter knife.  It all depends on the person.  If you think she is ready then she probably is.  You might want to run the idea past Mom first though. ;)

PS I'm going to guess her hands aren't huge so I would go for the Tinker Small or another 84mm.  On that thought what about a Cadet?  Then you could get her initials done.

I agree!  I think an 84mm like the Tinker small or Sportsman would be a great choice.

I have a scar on my thumb that proves that the saw can be much more dangerous than a blade.

The MFV blade can be turned into a sheepsfoot later.

I would have to go with the Recruit! It sounds like the perfect SAK!

I'd go with the MFV, she can pass it down to her kid when the time comes around. :tu: :tu:

the saw blade is very sharp and tears skin easily, I've cut my self last night with my OHT saw (not the fist time).

I'd still be tempted to get her a MFV despite the saw, and just make sure she only uses the saw blade in your presence :)

Let's face it.  As blokes (unless you're one of the 1 in 167 non-blokes on the forum) we are really the wrong people to ask.  I'd ask her mom what tools a young lady needs.

When I asked my wife what she wanted the other year the list was (in reverse preference): small blade, nail file, screwdriver, scissors, bottle opener and that it must be purple :)

Neil. The wife has no problem, and really states regularly she dont care and really wants nothing to with the tools, and knives. She has a drawer full of stuff I gave her and she never usees it. However Destinee is diff. she digs the stuff.

Here's just a bit of fun....

... but in the pink micarta.  No nasty saws ;)

My eldest will be six in February, I don't feel he'll be ready for his first knife any time soon but that hasn't stopped me thinking about what to put on a SAK for him :D

Holy crap that is it! a Sportsman 2 with a MFV blade and Scissors.
OK now to find out how to get teh parts of the scissors and the blade and get one made. I actually have a Eco Sportsman I can use.

84mm scissors will be the tricky bit.  A vintage SAK will have to be sacrificed for the cause.  :(

The <a href="http://s303.photobucket.com/albums/nn153/NKB_Pocket_Tools/?action=view&current=smallMyFirstAlox-84mmScisso.jpg>non-pink version[/url] of that SAK I've actually carried.  Yes a spear point blade is more useful but this knife is much more non-knife-people friendly  :tu:  Round here, that's a good thing.

Would go for MFS its the only time she will have it, because if she grows up she doesn't have a reason to buy a MFS Sak. Its a good number 1/ first in her collection. Don't worry about the Saw HC, the saw IMHO will be more dangerous to your furnitures than her........... When I got my first small saw on some cheap multitool when I was 8, I terrorized my parents furnitures for weeks :D

would the scissors of other models do,IF the sharp tips of scissors were shortened a bit and made more round(no pokes in the eyes-factor,u know)?

Not on an 84mm frame I'm afraid.  Unless you want to make a custom 84mm back spring. :)

I'm sorry but I would never give a child (or an adult) a SAK unless the blade(s) can be locked. I was thinking to give my sisters 6 year old a SAK or better yet a Leatherman Squirt but those non locking blades are an accidant waiting to happen. If the wrong forces are applied or just slipping away for some reason on a non locking blade (and that will happen sooner or later) the mess will be terrible. I've seen it happen   You don't want that with a child.
But that's just my opinion.

Other than that, I think it is great to have a little girl interested in our little hobby  :tu: It seems more as a boy thing I always reconed. But I was proven wrong many times in my life on many things  :D

mod a ST a little (not the spirit because the blade's slightly altered) so that it doesn't have the saw. That way, she'll have the safety blade but be able to use the tool the rest of her life.

If you are getting it modded with pink Micarta, why not go the whole hog and get a layer mod done as well?  Then you could chose what she has.

OK but would it cost a fortune ben to sacrafice a crapload of tools? I like the Idea that Neil showed and I am sure I could find a pair of scissors online.

As for her using a slippie instead of a lock. Well It is what I learned on, and she would not use it without me present.

Scibeer (Bill) did my SAK mod and I was amazed at how cheap it was.

Hey y'all,    sorry I haven't been around for a while.    All kinds of stuff going on and I have next to zero free time.

Hawkchucker,  I WISH I had 84mm scissors!!!    I have one golfer left and its not in good shape.
The 84mm scissors are tough to come by.   Any 84mm alox with more than 2 layers ends up costing a little since you have to get more liners from more 84mm cadets.   An 84mm cellidor model could be made with the MFV blade, file and openers and she would get the toothpick and tweezers that kids seem to like.   Any model can easily be modded to remove the blade tip too so you're not limited to a custom knife which would be more expensive.    I'd be happy to reshape any blade for her for free as long as I have access to my tools which will be another month or so.

Actually I moniter everything she does here. She has read this thread and I skip parts I think she should not see. Its Called parenting and seeing she is my 5th and certainly not last I have had practice. I dont care what people say here. Because I see it before she does.

She has met several people from here, and I trust them. However as all parents do I watch her closely. Ihave no problem with the people talking to her, and the responces to her welcome thread were all respectful to her and some even asked questions about tools and her.
