Title: Anyone watch Forged in Fire?
Post by: captain spaulding on July 20, 2015, 07:18:06 AM
Its a TV show on the History channel. Different contestants every show. Its obviously about making knives. Pretty cool show I have been enjoying.

I watch it, too. I am a little sad the left out testing the hunting knives in the last episode. Even if it was already known who would advance it would have been nice to see the other knives compared.

Other than that, it is a cool concept.

Hmmmm, should I keep my trap shut till I've watched more than the first episode......?

 - Why only 3 hours? Its not like they're not going to edit it down to 40 minutes anyway, so why not give    them a bit more time to do a proper job?

- They need a cold steel employee to do the testing, first guy seems a bit light in the pants.  The dude who tested the katana should've qualified the winner by telling us his technique sucked, why else would the blade that seemed to cut better loose?

-  :D And on a personal note I find the presenter very irritating, but I am glad he's dialed back a bit from the last (gun related?) show he hosted.

Overall, I like it!  :D

Binge-watched 2-6 last night........really liking the show!

But I still have a very basic problem with the concept........if you've even faintly bothered to check up on the subject, never mind being a bladesmith, you know that the blade is brittle after quenching, so then you temper it....
Obviously they don't have time for tempering........?

Despite everything, the skill of the contestants is humbling.  :salute:

There's a lot that I really like about the show- in addition to repeatedly having Ray on!  :D

Unlike every other reality show that seems to berate people when they are disqualified, these guys seem very supporting every time someone loses out.  In a world where celebrity judges say horrible things, it is great to hear judges explain why they chose the way they did, but then tell the person what they appreciated about the work they did.  In fact, they often make excuses for the guys like "If you had more time I think this would have been a really great blade" or "I'd really like to have seen what you'd have come up with if you hadn't lost so much time after that grinder accident."  There's none of the classic Simon Cowell or Gordon Ramsay crapola where they scream, swear and insult the person.  Maybe it has to do with the contestants demonstrating that they are capable of making weapons...?

I don't like that they keep calling them "weapons."  Many of the knives made are utility blades that aren't meant to be weapons, and I find that detracts from the show slightly for me.  I would love it if mass media could picture knives as something other than weapons.  {/soapbox]

The last knife/sword they have to make is typically a weapon.  The "testing" they do where Doug says he's catch phrases "It will cut" or "It will kill" I'd imagine would't be as "catchy" otherwise.

I do hear you tho and feel the same.  I've heard the host not use weapon a few times.

When you are a bladesmith, PC-bullsmurf no longer apply   You make it hard and sharp to turn soft&squishy into many pieces of  soft&squishy  :like:

It's not PC bullsmurf in my mind- just that there are a lot more uses for knives than murdering people.  In fact, I have personally used knives thousands of times in my life and probably only murdered a few dozen people.

I'm now trying to recall if the Judges have used the term weapons?  I am thinking Doug has but honestly I cannot recall.

I would say the usage of weapon early in the competition seems out of place.  Many of the makers make "camp" knives, so to call them weapons is weird to me.

The final blade is usually a historical weapon.  I'm sure there have been a couple edged tools for the finale but I cannot recall.

Dave Baker used to do another show- I don't recall seeing him on it too often but he used to recreate weapons for testing.  I think it was called Modern Warrior or something.  They would bring in practitioners of various disciplines, recreate the weapons and measure their effectiveness, then simulate a thousand battles between historical warriors that would have never met each other in actual combat to see which one was the most effective.

It was a cool show and I miss it.

Another vote for Man at Arms: Reforged  :tu:

It would be fair to say they make knives in the first round and edged weapons in the second round.

Quite frankly, knives don't kill people, people kill people  :P ,  and a steak knife in your kitchen does the job as well as anything else.

Mini-spoiler, watch Dave Baker's reaction when Doug demonstrates the use of a karambit on him

I view myself as a junior member of that fraternity, and if you make knives a sharp edge is the goal, not something to be squeamish about  :gimme:

Since I'm binge watching season 4 please excuse the lack of details, but one of the contestant said the 2 great sins of a blacksmith is hitting cold steel and under-charging for your work.

That's why I decided a while ago already to stop taking orders (I had 3 orders  ) or trying to sell anything.  I'm making what I like, and if anybody likes it as much and is willing to pay a fair price, they can have it.

If that works out I'll have an excellent collection  :drink:

I'm liking the new season, I just think they don't need to be desperate about finding new challenges, nothing wrong with recycling old ones.

They need only worry about running out of blade smiths, and when they do there are several South African blade smiths I would love to see on the show  :gimme: I know of one that has auditioned.

I totally blame that show for my dreams now being mangled up with anvils, belt grinders, hydraulic hammers and kilns - and some voice saying "it will kill". I might need therapy :)

Seriously though I'm quite fond of the show - actually fond of most shows which showcases various kinds of craftmansship.

Agreed- that was what I liked most about the early days of Mythbusters.  I love watching folks build things.

Counting Cars in the early days used to go into the build details and that was great, but then they started to get more and more into the sob stories of people, similar to what Extreme Home Makeover did, and eventually seemed like it was just a very expensive charity show.

Season 5 probably only has a few episodes left, and I enjoyed it as much as ever.

I'm scared the show becomes a victim of it's own success, I believe they have a winning recipe and they're not likely to run out of contestants anytime soon (which is in itself amazing).

I would like to see episodes dedicated to international contestants, as well as 2nd opportunities for guys like Walter Sorrels etc.

I enjoy, so does my wife, at least she seems to as she does not pick at it when I watch the DVR copy.

Tonight's episode is to start a 20 competitor invitational, I believe for 5 episodes for a purse of $50,000 to final winner.   Not certain the format for eliminating smiths but sure it will be interesting.

The show has evolved, beyond the hammering and sharpening, to the smiths need ing to understand the metals they are working, and welding metals together.   Brains as well brawn with talent.

Just started season 2... fun so far. What concerns me is that Weapon == hacking tool for them. The judges even mock contestants for adding cross-guard (which is what makes it a weapon IMO). Oh and Doug Marcaida has to work on his cutting technique, especially with longer blades, its not called draw-cut for no reason. But overall I'm impressed by the judges, they do a really good job with quality/functionality over looks (I once watched a model-casting show and they sent a contestant home in the 5th round, because she was too short... what did they expect, that she would grow???).

And what some cook up in 3h / 5days wowzzeeeeee :o

40-45cm at a guess, that would be my Kukris.

I do heat up the steel to take the bend out of the leaf spring and to put the Kukri bend in, but I do not count these as forged blades.

A buddy can teach me the basics of MIG and TIG, the rest I'm sure I can figure out

I like his minimalist hatchets... really nice pieces.
The prices are too high for me, but especially with the attention he got with FiF, he probably sells well.

But he is my favorite judge.

Did you notice, that the Dagger from the Dagger episode (where they had to make a dagger in the first 2 rounds) was made by him? Makes me wonder how many of those pieces they show were made by one of them.

Dare I dream?  Wil FiF just carry on ad infinitum?

it used to be on quite sporadically very late at night on TV here (in Spain) but more recently it seems like at least a couple episodes a day in the early evening, I have tried to catch a few more episodes when possible.

That's only feasible....and not always enjoyable.....on Youtube

What gets me a bit is the small interview inserts.  In some cases it's obvious the footage was recorded before or after the show, but there have been cases that made me suspect the "3 hour forging time" might contain some time-outs......?

I suspect there are breaks, much like in other shows like My Kitchen Rules where they are cooking under a 90min time limit, and you only see them hustling away the whole time, and suddenly they have a finger or three wrapped in blue tape from having cut themselves.

I was chosen to compete back in February, Last step was getting a medical clearance from my DR. He said no way.   :dunno: I really wanted to give it a try, but he figured I would be one of the ones taken out on a stretcher.

Any chance at getting clearance to do it at a later date?  I guess if the Doc says "no way" then  :dunno:.  Bummer to hear as I'm sure it was for you too.

Watched S05E39 last night!  :like:

Thanks to some facebook posts I suspect there's an episode where the judges made knives.......but whatever, the more the better!

This episode taught the value of humility Mr "Arms of Steel"

It now seems to be on pretty much daily here, with a good rotation, I haven't seen too many repeated episodes even though they seem to do 3 in a row (I tend to only catch 2 of them, and not daily)

Apparently I have been living under a rock in the past years, because I completely missed this show

Currently I am recording and watching every episode that I still can, and in the past days I have seen about 15 episodes from different seasons already  :D

What a great show  :hatsoff:

I'm a little bit........ disheartened by what came to light recently.

A Youtuber that I follow took part, his channel's been dead for a few months, turns out he had back surgery.

It would seem that he won the episode he took part in......more than a year ago........which still hasn't aired......so he's still not allowed to talk about it

The realization of how huge the show has become, and how they need to handle these things sort of killed my dream a bit.....

$10 000 will help, but the big payback as even a judge pointed out is many more facebook friends and a general price increase on your blades.

That....and there's several South African masters of the craft ahead of me in the queue

Battle of the Branches (armed forces) currently running with  50K prize money for the winner.

Watched the Army and Air Force episodes last night.

Some times a bit of luck helps  :salute:

As far as I understand, U.S. Navy is relaxing its rules on body fat limits and has loosened its restrictions on fat sailors. Now they can loosen their belts and put on weight as fitness levels lowered

the Navy guys are not just heavier, I think they also tipped the scale in their favor when it comes to this contest, producing 2 excellent officer swords... not like the Marines, where the one that bent won because the other broke.

That is how it goes in this contest... no room for errors and a little hiccup can cost you the race (I guess changing it to best of 35, like in the snooker world championship, would be a bit too time consuming).

I can only guess, but it seems the show is very successful and growing.  Can't think of a single episode that I found boring, so that leaves room for the smiths that were obviously unlucky to come back for redemption episodes.....which I've really enjoyed.

Almost want to go as far as to say I'm worried they over-achieve and run out of contestants

Not that soon... whatever military branch wins, the others will want "revenge", then they can do more Champion of Champion rounds and of course... state battles... go international...
I think they will run out of reasonable historic weapons before they run out of contestants. Although it would be fun if Wil announces the weapon they have to forge at home: "The Arquebus" now that would be a challenge... forging a barrel.

And I think that's the beauty of it, no matter how the recycle or combine challenges, it will never be the same outcome twice.....

Yay international editions

Come to think of it, they could do a season or two in South Africa, UK should be good for several seasons, and the rest of the EU will just need translators and subtitles!

I think they should hire me!

I would love to see an international show.   :like:.  GG write the show and tell them how much SA would be interested in appearing.  Let them know what a great community of blade smiths there are.

Eastern Europe is quite big in that department (Almost all HEMA and Medieval weapons come from there). Some of them produce combat ready swords on a daily basis, many do elaborate hilts. That would give them quite an edge (at least for the second round).
HEMA and the Medieval Scene actually have rejuvenated the smithing in Europe quite a bit, even in Switzerland you can make an apprenticeship as weapon-smith again.
Recent years also have increased the demand for custom kitchen knives (mostly because men cook and they want good knives to do so).

Of course it is questionable if the pros will compete (not many ABS master-smiths actually partake in the show, I only recall Burt Foster). But I'm certain, there are enough capable smith to be found here.

It might be too much of a gamble for masters? On one side if they participate they are just expected to win, and if they do the prize isn't that much in a pro setting. Not much upside there I guess. On the other hand they might be asked to make a unheard of thing from unreasonable materials without their usual tools, Thus the downside is a real risk for a loss - possibly even to someone just starting out with a converted grill, hammer and a angle grinder... (Some of those guys make amazing stuff with quite ordinary and basic tools).

I think they have many impressive people there already, and it would be interesting what more masters would add and do differently.

I heard about in March and now watch in.

My Mom had surgery so I was up visiting.  She was talking about the show and how my brother and her liked to watch it together.  I watched it with her while there and watched several times since.

Massive talent in that part of the world, language is the barrier.  Just look at the photos from the Kiev knife show posted here occasionally.

Finally watched the episode which Jason from the YT channel HOJ forge took part in and won.

From a recent video of his it now seems there's 18 months+ between filming and airing

I'm a bit torn by the changes in the show, I guess they have to step up things but in many recent episodes I felt the contestants faced harder challenges than many before them, I guess that's just luck.

As a die-hard fan I don't see the need to spice things, they can do slight variations on previous challenges for many more seasons without me getting bored.  :tu:
