One more day of the Spirit Challenge and here I go! Actually, I've been itching to try EDCing my MP 600 since I got it, and I have a month before the OHT Farewell Challenge so here goes starting 12/1/23. :ahhh
-
I didn't see anything about an organized challenge? So, you just decided to challenge yourself and put the MP600 on your belt? Bravo! Are you going to do an update and post pictures and stuff? Sounds like fun. Best wishes. G
-
Yessir, I had my son's MP600 out and thought I'd put mine to the test!
-
If my research is correct, a small band of only 9 glorious MT warriors have completed the MP Challenge - myself included :salute: - and you will be the first person complete the Challenge in 6 years.
:woohoo:
Reminds me of The Great MP600 Burial Project of 2014-15 some 9 years ago:
https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,53603.0.html
-
 Powernoodle! I thought it had been awhile, but I didn't know that it had been that long ago with so few participants :o
-
If I hadn't just set up for a Sak-A-Like, I'd be down. I'll be cheering from the sidelines though.
-
Thanks BP! I understand completely.
-
I completed my MP challenge in 2017. It doesn't seem that long ago. I also carried it for a month in the Daredevil challenge because we were challenged to carry something we didn't like. I like the MP well enough but I never carry because it always bothered me that it poked holes in my pockets with that needle nose plier sticking out the end of it, so it had to be carried on my belt which I have always hated. Anyone you ask would have to admit it is the best multitool for fidget factor with the flickey pliers though. Not promising to join you Barry, but I'll certainly be watching.
-
Thanks Alan! It's definitely a fun fidget tool. I'm in the OHT Challenge in January so it will be interesting to compare the two.
-
Yes. A comparison after a month of use of each one would be great. :hatsoff:
-
Is this going to be an official challenge? I am interested in joining!
-
It is! There's a badge for the MP600 and I'd be glad to have you :tu:
-
Barry, I just got my 1st Gerber today, but it is this one. The MP600 is in route. Could I use this one until my MP600 arrives?
Edit: Or maybe add on the days at the end once the MP600 arrives.
Double Edit. Looks like it is expected tomorrow! One can hope!

Lisa, that Multiplier of yours has me looking now too  That's in incredible condition and the box looks brand new 😍. Long ago, I used to sell Gerber Gear in the days of the Mark I and II, and the first Multipliers. Those were the equivalent of the Spyderco's and the Benchmade in those days. If only I had a time machine

I hear ya about a time machine!
Thanks for adding me to the challenge!

I used to have a Mark I, a Mark II, a Command I, Command II. and an original Bob Loveless Gerber Guardian. Those were cool knives. I also had one of the early Multipliers too. :)
I should have kept ll of them.
If you find that time machine I'm in too!

My contender for the month, a Black Oxide carbide cutter version that I picked up earlier this year. I assembled a kit around a Center Drive sheath I have. I have a feeling that this is just the beginning of a Gerber Collection :D
-
That was very generous of you Lisa. I have been humbled by the kindness of this community so many times and yet I can still be surprised. There's no doubt in my mind that MTO is where the finest people on the interwebs congregate.

Good Morning, Today I and for the foreseeable week or so I will be carrying my bladeless MP600 that I swapped the pliers for the Blunt Nose version. Like Barry the sheath is from a Center Drive as well as the bit kit. The bit driver is an old Apex version I have had for twenty years or so. The bit extension is from Milwaukee.

Thanks Vicman! :hatsoff:
JonesE, great to have you aboard! Antti, I understand and glad to have you, Alan and others following along. Please feel free to comment on anything you like :tu:
-
I've been wanting to pick up a blunt nose. I can think of a number of good uses for them and I think it would be easier to find a sheath. Are they shorter when they're closed?

Barry, they are 1/4” shorter when retracted into the handles. One of the benefits is that if you are using a nylon sheath, the blunt nose is less likely to tear the bottom out over time.

Great comparison pic!
-
:iagree: and thanks JonesE! I'd like to pick up one for work, but the needle nose version is a bit too long for my leather Super Tool sheath  That might just do the trick. Thanks for the pic!
-
Day 1: I picked up this trick reading the reviews on Gerber. I used the "notch" on the lanyard ( I have no idea what else to call it ) as an awl.
I was kind of surprised that a lot of the military reviews didn't know what to do with the lanyard. I remember having to lash down everything so you wouldn't lose it.

Barry, I just checked my MP600BN in a Leatherman Super Tool 300 leather box sheath. It’s still too long and won’t snap closed.

I just finished 60 days with the Vic Spirit. It's a whole different animal than the MP series, but I like them both. I think of the Vic as a SAK with pliers. The MP has an old school greatness about it. It's simple and tough, kind of like an OG Super Tool. I'm looking forward to having to get creative with tool set, which I really enjoy.

Yes, you have a genuine MP600. The laser etched number is the production lot number that Gerber uses.
-
Thanks JonesE! I'm still surprised at just how big the MP600 is.

The time seemed to fly by Lisa. It did get difficult looking at all those other tools though :D. The Spirit was an easy carry though, and it was a fun group of people in it.

I was surprised. Weight of older one is 7.6 ounces, MP600 is 8.2 ounces, at least on my scale.
-
I am too. I know the 600 is a bit bigger than it seems. It's a good deal heavier too. It's actually up there in the Swisstool range.
Edit: The Swisstool is 9.8 ounces so it's right in the middle. The Spirit is 7.6 ounces.

Family photo time. MP, MP400, and MP600 Pro-Scout version. The MP was my first regularly carried pliers based tool. I got it around 1994.

Now that I'm carrying needle nose pliers around, I've found a couple more uses.
Makes a great back scratcher.
It also helps me not have to bend over as far when picking up things like the rubber band I found on the office floor. I didn't grunt this time picking something up! :tu:

Day 2
Busy day helping a friend out with some work, then we were playing a game- Betrayal at the house on the hill. These are some of the dice from the game, and yes, they have blank sides!
Then I had trouble posting this last night, but anyway, here it is.

Good for you Alan! I like that serrated blade.
Day 03
Needed to touch up the serrated portion of the edge with a diamond hone.

I agree Lisa! That Philips head looks like a good one. The more I learn about the variations of this tool the more I want. I spent a couple days earlier just going through the Gerber forum and reading about all the different tools. Def seems to be a fan. I've had a couple MP 400's and I still have a Center Drive, but I think I like the 600 series the best.
I'm waiting for the elusive Fishing MP600 at a good price. They're rare and expensive but look so cool. Cool picture Texas! I have an MP600 ST (Sight Tool) version in route as well. I like the looks of them. I like that outside Phillips. :tu:

My original MP became magnetized from flicking it out. My MP600 has not and I don't know if it will, but I have to believe that if it does become magnetized it couldn't be too good for the circuitry in the phone. :dunno: Just something to consider.

I learned today that in the bladeless MP600, there is no really good way to quickly cut through the tape on packages. I used the can opener. It worked but struggled. I didn’t think to use the scissors until after I made a mess of the box. I normally carry a knife with me and use that, but it was late and I had already put it up by the bed. This is not a complaint, just an observation and the tool did perform the task required. Just not as efficiently as I desired.

Day 5
No work pics today.
Here is my mp600 that I reworked the plier profile on. First I lengthened the slot maybe an eighth of an inch so the pliers could slide in further, then I traced the outline of the hinge area on the closed pliers, and then removed the pliers and ground and sanded on them. I find that makes them a little more pocketable.

Sorry to interrupt the challenge, but can I ask y’all a question?
If a guy (…me) was thinking about buying someone (…myself) an MP600, which one would you get and why?
I would like to preserve my old Multiplier, since it’s in such good shape, and the prices of the MP600 seem pretty reasonable! But there are a few variations and I was wondering what the collective wisdom was on the pros/cons, or the ONE to get, or… whatever I should know.
Thanks!
-
Nice job Texas! :like:

Marlowe, if I were buying a new one today, I'd get the Basic. It has the non replaceable cutters but other than that, it's the same tool.
I don't blame you on preserving your Multiplier btw!
Interestingly enough, the new Basic I got my son has "Multiplier" on the handles! Sorry to interrupt the challenge, but can I ask y’all a question?

Are the replaceable cutters not worth it then?

Although I'm not participating, I do own a fair share of MP's as I like a lot the platform/models. My recommendation would be: first choice would be the Bladeless; full array of drivers, file, scissors, can and bottle openers, needlenose tip. I work in healthcare, and most hospital/facilities frown upon edged blades and/or knives, but other than that it is a very comprehensive multitool in terms of function (besides, I made removable plain and serrated blades that fit in the exchanger and are more than adequate for my uses). My only caveat are the cutters: they're very brittle, and even having one rest on the other while cutting or turning is reason enough for them to chip, crack or even explode in pieces ( and replacing them regularly is quite an expensive proposition). I use mines only on copper wires or very thin gauge steel wire. My second choice would be the Pro Scout, which is a combi blade, bladed Bladeless with regular/integral/basic cutters head and, it sacrifices the large flat driver for the scissors and also has the saw blade exchanger. Do be mindful that as of today, the saw blades used in the Gerber's exchanger are the old, universal/u-shanked ones, and must be of the hole in tang variety; still available but not with the variety or ease of the newer t type. (or, as I've been known to do, modify the t ones to fit!). Then the Basic (the "original" one, the true predecessor!). No sawblade exchanger, or scissors but, with a very nice and wickedly sharp utility/Wharncliffe and serrated knives and lanyard attachment. Then the Bluntnose (a Basic but, well, with bluntnose pliers and replaceable cutters. Mind there are still out some with integral cutters like the true Basic). And last to me the Basic/GI with replaceable cutters. Now one last thing, your choice of silver or black oxide, except for the Bladeless, which only comes in black oxide, or Pro Scout, which only comes in silver color. In the end, your needs will dictate your choice so, any of them will be an incredibly good choice.
Edit- sorry to all for it being soooo long!!!
Edit (again!?!?)- Although Gerber makes a bit kit for them, if you happen to have a Leatherman bit kit for Rebar/Super Tool/Juice, it works flawlessly on our MP's so, no need to hurry that! Even the ones from Ganzo and similars will also work if the adapter is 1/8" square to 1/4" hex.

Hi Awl,
Not participating. Just enjoying the photos and comments. I'm not sure how Barry did this? Wham. One day he says I am doing a challenge and then the fun people just pile in.
It's like Barry had a convertible, a cooler and some shades. Drives up to some bored looking young folks standing around. Says, "Hey. Anybody want to go to the beach?" Then the whole bunch jumps in his ride without even thinking. Turns on some music. Everybody living it. Must be magic. Or something? Best wishes. G

Great Job on the mod TexasAKM!
Marlowe, I chose the Pro-Scout because it has nice Fiskars scissors and does not have the carbide cutters. I find scissors are an absolute must for my EDC but honestly, not a deal breaker in tool selection because a Vic Compact can cover the need for scissors. If you have an AR-15 you might want the model with the sight adjustment tool. Other than that they're all good and the Basic will cover most people's needs handily.
-
Thank you all so much! I'm lucky to have all the super cool kids along for the ride!!

Hey Alan great looking Gerber and bromeliads! :tu:
-
Thanks for all the advice, folks!
I think I’m going to avoid the carbide cutters and choose from the models that don’t have them. Too bad that it looks like the blade-less version is carbide-only though.
-
Hey Alan great looking Gerber and bromeliads! :tu:
Thank you. You ought to see them after it rains and they're covered in purple flowers.
-
As previously mentioned, the Pro-Scout version doesn't have carbide cutters.
A lot of users will simply use the carbide cutters until they break and then replace them with aftermarket cutters such as these high speed steel cutters meant for use in a lathe. https://littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=1724
Or they get these, which are still carbide cutters and also meant for use in a lathe, but seem a bit stronger than the Gerber supplied cutters and they are considerably cheaper. https://www.amazon.com/TCMT110204-Carbide-Insert-Turning-Holder/dp/B07G2DZRK2
At least Gerber was kind enough to use cutters that are more or less a standard size. Your mileage may vary whatever you decide to get. I happen think trying to figure out which model to get is half the fun.

:hatsoff: Thanks Vicman! Looking great everyone! I did have to enlist the help of another multitool earlier this morning. I used the Spirit's scissors for manicure duties. I'm sure it could be done with the Gerber, but mine doesn't have the scissors.
-
Hey Barry,
Since the triangular carbide inserts seem to be the same on all sides, can they just be shifted and re-tightened to provide another cutting surface? Assuming they don't break completely off the tool, of course. Best wishes. G
:)

Yessir, I've done it on my Center Drive Gary. I've actually had pretty good luck with Gerber and the cutters. I don't think they're as good as Leathermans, but they get it done.
Hey Barry,
Since the triangular carbide inserts seem to be the same on all sides, can they just be shifted and re-tightened to provide another cutting surface? Assuming they don't break completely off the tool, of course. Best wishes. G
:)

You are welcome Barry!

Day 06
No uses today so another pic in the garden where I have some small bromeliads attached to a piece of driftwood hanging on my fence.
Learned a new word today!!!
Had never heard of “bromeliads” before today🤓
I do bet those blossom nicely after a rain, Florida, correct?
I watch a video, how to care for and also learned these are relative to Pineapples but not edible.
You will need to share a picture next time in bloom👍

I agree on all counts LC :D

Yes, it is! My younger son is a collector, started with Ball Cards, then ZIPPOs, then mother had him try to get me interested in Zippos too! As I was studying firearms. And had a few.
It backfired, he discovered a market for antique firearms, WWII vintage and European and other types being imported. He went AWL in! Even got his own Antique Dealers License, buying lots of 20 to 25. Keep two or three of the best, then list and sell the rest, and some just for parts. It was/is a good side gig when inventory appears.
He even teaches his son about collecting. Buy two, use one, store the other 🤪
I actually could not keep up with those two, knifes and MT was harmless my wife said, and she knew! I started counting her teddy bears and baskets scattered throughout the house🥺. My knives a minority, yet!!!

Rainy day wood pile pick today. I got a couple of good uses out of the MP600 today. We had a dimmer switch for the dining room light start to flicker the light. I would say it was close to 20 years old or so.. it had one of those touch pads you used to set the dimness for the room. Well I got a new switch the other day and my wife kindly reminded me to change it. Anyway, changed it with a rocker switch with a slider. Much easier to use and control the dimness of the room. Wife is happy so we will chock it up as a win. Second use was to pop to top of a bottle of tonic.

Reading you awl using your MTs to open bottle seals, plastic inserts and even snack bags. Makes me feel so much better😜
I keep a REBAR on the counter, a PST on the end table near my normal seal for those tasks.
My new issue is the water bottles!!! Seem the bottles are thinner materials, the lids are screwed down tighter, any more when I open a lid, I have such a grip on the bottle as I twist the lid, I squirt about a 1/4th of the water on me and people within a couple feet. A death grip…

I know what you mean Barry. I can barely open a bag of chips anymore. Seems everything is sealed extra strong, either that or my hands are weakening.
The wife and I get a lot of individual serving sized chip bags to pack in our lunches. Last year I accidentally opened one from the bottom, but noticed that it was much much easier to open. so much so that I've been doing it on purpose ever since. Seems to be consistent on large bags too.
Sorry to interrupt, just thought I'd share. We now return you to our regularly scheduled programming.

a Leatherman bit kit, it will work with the Gerber MP600.
If you also have the Leatherman bit extender it will work too.

What do you awl use for sheaths? I picked up my MP 609 used, and it didn't come with a sheath. I got a leather sheath from Gerber, but it usually holds my Center Drive. I repurposed an old Center Drive cloth sheath to carry mine. It's pretty durable and roomy.

Not for contests. I smoked a couple of turkey breasts for Thanksgiving and some boudin last week. Funny you ask though. Today happens to be BBQ sauce making day here. I've been making this sauce for 25 years and everyone loves it. My wife wants to give some away for Christmas and I've been thinking about going back to using it at contests next year. I was scoring good with it during my first year competing, but strayed for a few years chasing other flavor profiles. Gonna try to get back to my roots next year I suppose.

Day 10: I used mine in some home improvement work. Pictured is the screwdriver turning a bolt that was probably too big for it, but it didn't miss a beat. Not pictured was some pliers use and using the Wharncliffe blade to cut pieces of plastic trim. Things that popped up during the project that were better suited to dedicated tools, but the 600 was on my belt so it got it done!
This is one rugged, built piece of equipment!

That seems like the standard issue across the Gerber lineup. I like it because it doesn't stick out and get caught on things.

A while back, I removed the idle stopper and S-VCM controller from my wife’s Honda Pilot so the dealer could do some recall items. She got the SUV back a couple of weeks ago and has been asking to get the idle stopper and S-VCM controller reinstalled. Today was a nice day and the perfect opportunity. So, 1 item removed from the honey do list. It is amazing how much smoother the Pilot is with these two items installed.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53389384579_77c5026a08_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2pkQxYF)

I'm looking at picking up a blunt nose too Antti. I'm a fan of the solid cutters, although I've had decent luck with mine.

Solid cutters are good but few times i allmost ruined cutters cause material was bit too thick to cut (own fault not to check it first)

Thanks FB! Vicman, my second multitool was an Army issued Power Loc. It's a great tool! Unfortunately, I put it in the center console of my car, from where it dropped into my trash bag and I didn't catch it  I think my next purchase is going to be another Power Loc!
Great pic by the way!

IIRC, When I first joined MTo and started as learning about multi-tools, the Gerber models were popular because of the price point and the novelty of the head sliding in and out of the handle. The needle nose extending out of the handle annoyed some and they ground the plier heads shorter to bring the plier flush with the handle.
That was my impression!
It made no sense to me then, and still does not, with the exception it does provide a better grip if attempting to turn a nut top down.
The replaceable, carbide inserts are designed for other tools, the MP line adapted, yet I see it as a fail on Gerber’s part, cutting corners.
Visits to this challenge, reconfirms my feelings and impressions that the MP600 models just did not suit my needs then and still today.
A great tool for those that have and adapted to using it, and I will not belittle it for its loyal followers, just saying…

It is a KROGER exclusive I was told. Had in stores before Thanksgiving. If you blinked you missed out. I bought one of each. I am type 2 and tried the zero sugar I think two cans remain, it was first thing every body would grab on visits.
Normally, Orange Vanilla Seltzer water and Grape are my go evening snack beverages. (Waterloo brand)
I do appreciate the tip 😉

Day 12
Visited a coastal nature center today. The trail crisscrosses over a seawater canal and ponds.
-
That looks great Alan! It looks nice and warm :D
-
It was kind of breezy today. Mom wore a jacket but I was comfortable. The water was probably warm as it is typically above 80 degrees F, but the nature center doesn't let you go off the trail to get anywhere near the water. It was a beautiful day today, but we're under gale and rip current warnings until tomorrow morning.
The U.S. National Weather Service defines a gale as sustained marine surface winds moving at a speed of between 34 and 47 knots (63–87 km/h, 17.5–24.2 m/s or 39–54 miles/hour).
-
It was cool here, and overcast. We had a slight breeze, but I don't think it got above 40 degrees F. Actually, for this time of year, that's not bad!

I didn't occur to me until I saw your new Suspension Lisa. Beware of the pancake sheaths that come with a lot of the Gerbers. The narrow belt loop on the back tends to wear fairly quickly and you can lose the tool and the works and not even know it. I've had a Suspension and it was a good, serviceable multitool, but the sheaths are lacking.

Almost half way! How's everyone doing with their MP600? I think I'm going to pocket carry mine at work, as it's a wee bit too long for the sheath I carry my work EDC in (Swisstool RS).
Edit: I use the ruler on the Swisstool more than anything else on it except for the main blade. I'm interested in trying the ruler on the Gerber. The layout is slightly different so I'm curious how it will do. I'm not much of a woodworker so this is just a simulated pic. I use mine to measure brake travel and other issues on trucks.

Great collection! :like: at one point I had a center drive, a diesel, a 400 amd a 600, and a dime, I moved on most of them over the past couple years. Now all I've got in the gerber department is my old suspension that rides in my tackle box amd my 600

Day 15
I was mainly a SAK collector, Victorinox and Wenger, but had dabbled in Leatherman and some of the others in the past.
I was on a Leatherman PST kick back in November and was looking for some different variations of it when I ran across an ad that said Gerber Leatherman, I thought it was a Hybrid or something, (first photo). I bought it and started to research what it was and found out it's a Mr. Pinchy.
That led me down the Multiplier Rabbit Hole, and then I found the MP600 (second photo), and Barry's Spur of the Moment challenge and that's where it began. I do like the MP600, but I do believe I favor the MP400 due to size and weight.
-
The 400 carries really well. It's a lot like the PST II size and tool kit wise. Magentus is a big fan, carrying one daily at work.
Vicman, I like that picture!!

The 400 carries really well. It's a lot like the PST II size and tool kit wise. Magentus is a big fan, carrying one daily at work.
Vicman, I like that picture!!
Thank you, Barry!

Bonus entry.
Used the blade from the MP600 to open the package of a new-to-me MP400, unsure of the variation as this one has a file and not scissors.
-
Of the two 400's I've had, both had scissors Lisa. I like the idea of a file on board because I'm never without at least a keychain Vic.
-
I'm trying to find the name of this model. I think Gerber made one with a file, or maybe they were just mods people made. :dunno:
Edit: Found out it is a MP450.
-
My MP400 has the combo edge drop point blade and scissors. I don't recall ever seeing one with a Wharncliffe blade and file.

Me neither, but apparently it is a discontinued item and is called a MP450:

Day 17: I've been wanting to try the crimpers, and found a connector but no wire  I have to say, they feel like they'd definitely get the job done!

Day 17
Very nice! :like: had to get rid of a thorn bush and didn't have any loppers nearby so I broke out the serrated edge, I had to touch it up a little after. That's the only thing I haven't had any luck with on the 600s is the serrated blade is never quite there from the factory

Me too, even on the Center Drive.

It seems my Bee House hasn't attracted any Mason Bees. It's been nearly 2 years and nothing yet.
I read this on the internet,
"The optimal location to hang your mason bee house is 6 to 7 feet off the ground, preferably under an eave of your house, garage, shed or some other shelter. "
Did that, nothing yet. :dunno:

You awl are having fun with your MP600s.
Actually nailing the challenge to this marker.
I will say it again, I never had a warm fuzzy feeling toward this tool set. :hatsoff: to you each making do with your tools. My Diesel model is good and the MP400 is a cute compact version, yet, never developed confidence to carry with regularity.
I tried, but when Fiskars bought Gerber my interest faded more so, then when I read in the PST challenge that Gerber was doing heat treat for Leatherman tools, saw the business then jumped onto the MT train interest went even lower.
The Mp600 has multiple models and definitely its fans, devoted fans. Will not belittle those two points.

I bought mine when they first came out...if I remember right, I did not pay over $20.00 for it. I'm guessing that I got it around 1998.

Day 18
I had purchased a Gerber MP400 that had a broken blade. I sent the photo of it to Gerber and they approved a replacement.
Not sure why folks don't bother themselves with turning the product in for warranty. :dunno:
So the replacement is here! Used the blade of the MP600 to open the package. Looks a little dirty, but it is just oil residue.
Edit: Added a photo of the broken and new. Seems they no longer have the hollow elongated nail nick in the new one.

I sent them the photo of the broken one, and they sent me the new one. They did ask me to hold onto the broken one until they determine what to do.
I suppose it could have been possible for them to have asked me to send it in, which they didn't.

Simple is has simple does!
Your picture Noah got me thinking, yes occasionally I do that!
It surprises me that Gerber never offered the MP6xx in color covers. Leave the tools stainless or BO, but offer color variants. Bright Red, Royal Blue, Danger Yellow, Cosmic Pink, Tangerine Orange, the possibilities are endless!
Gerber’s marketing really missed a gold mine. Just imagine the number of tools could have been sold???
I surprise myself sometimes.
At one point in my life I would have sat in such an idea, now as I am older, the need to share just allows things to pop out!😵💫 :woohoo: :viking:

It surprises me that Gerber never offered the MP6xx in color covers. Leave the tools stainless or BO, but offer color variants. Bright Red, Royal Blue, Danger Yellow, Cosmic Pink, Tangerine Orange, the possibilities are endless!
Gerber’s marketing really missed a gold mine. Just imagine the number of tools could have been sold???
I surprise myself sometimes.
At one point in my life I would have sat in such an idea, now as I am older, the need to share just allows things to pop out!😵💫 :woohoo: :viking:

I agree and thank you all! I'm nearing the end of this chapter in my life, and about to embark on another. I'm scheduled to retire on May 10th. It's a strange time!
Vicman, I love that 600! I was going to say there's some really cool variations in the Gerber Prototypes thread here.
Lisa you're getting some great Gerbers! It's great to see the variations that Alan and Vicman have.

Nice photos Spartan and Vicman!

I love that RED Vicman! Exactly what I was thinking.
Surprising that more of the color options are not loose in the wild.
But, then again I really must of led a sheltered life and was not exposed to the wide world and awl options.
Truth be told, I do not remember much of the 80s, 90s, and early 2000 years. Had 4 kids trying to get ready for life, paying for food, then collage, and out into the world.
Coming home to my wife at the end of each day, then, Repeat daily!
Good thing I was not distracted 😁❤️
-
Barry, what a great day that will be, for you, for your wife, and family.
Well deserved for sure. 🌹

This is just the regular file seen on other MP400s.

Day 22
Today I changed up the folding knife that accompanies my MP600. I've been carrying an ESEE Zancudo folder that I got in the Sos Surprise Box, now changed out for a Spyderco Tenacious that also came from the Surprise Box another time that I received it. You see, there are so few forum members interested in receiving free stuff that those of us who are playing have received the box multiple times in the last year and a half or so. If anyone else wants to receive the surprise box you can sign up in the thread in the Break Room. You get the box from the last person who had it, you pick out what you want (adding anything more is optional), then you send it to the next person in line. It's free stuff. You just have to pay the postage to send it to the next person.
-
I tried to use my MP600 for this job, but I had to use vice grips...the Leatherman Crunch actually.
I have the broken blade out and the file from an MP600 in the MP400!
I will need the Gerber tool to tighten the fittings though as it is hard to get a good grip on them.

Just wanted to thank everyone for the get well wishes. Y’awl are truly the greatest.
Today was pretty much a down day. Did venture up some energy and managed to get out on some errands. Afterwords was wiped, so took more cold medicine and chilled for the evening.
As for the MP600, it patiently rode with me today. It didn’t see any action and I can feel its impatience growing.

Thank you, Barry! The Irish Seconds were bowls that did not meet the Peterson standards, and were labeled Irish seconds and sold for much less, some time ago. They are labeled something else now, I forget what, and are not the bargain they once were. Also, the earlier ones were marked Made in the Republic of Ireland on the other side..

Day 24
Driving this morning and thought I'd show the 2 tools that identify the Pro-Scout. It has scissors and the U-shank adapter with the RemGrit blade. I find the RemGrit blade which was supposed to cut anything works well on plastic or PVC but doesn't work very well on wood. After the holiday rush I will hit the local hardware store and buy a wood saw blade.

MP600 standing guard over the Christmas tree.
I enjoy watching the excitement build throughout the day as the young ones antipation rises. Soon, we will make Christmas Eve dinner, build a fire in the fireplace, and read the Christmas story. Then we will put out cookies and milk for Santa and send the young ones to bed. Then the wife and I will take a moment in front of the fire while it dies down to sip some whiskey.
Have a Blessed Evening Everyone! Wishing y’awl some Christmas Cheer!

Day 24
Busy day, as you might imagine. I used the blunt nose a few times, and the ST to remove another tea jug lid.
Great day though, we did the family dinner on Christmas eve, at my second son's house. My oldest son and I prepared the ham, turkey, green bean casserole, and other sides in the morning and early afternoon, then went to second son's house for the dinner. After dinner and after the sun was down, all four of my sons and I went to the lake to enjoy our pipes. The moon was bright, most of the clouds had moved away, and a nice wind out of the north blew. A very nice day.

Water heater went out at the rental today. Not sure how it could get a leak at just 2 years old.
Water heaters went from $500 in 2021 to $700 in 2023. They cover the $500, I have to pay the difference.
Thankfully the renter caught it early. No damage, just a faulty leaking water heater that just started to go bad.
***Edit update. Just got back from Home Depot and they covered everything but $35. :woohoo:

I guess there are a total of five Trolls by the artist in Puget Sound. I think the plan is to go find the one in Ballard on Friday. The wife has expressed an interest in seeing them all. The other three local ones are in West Seattle, Vashon Island, and Bainbridge Island. I guess there is an additional one in Portland, Oregon.
And today’s carry.

Day 26
Early on in the challenge I had posted this tool and identified it a a pro scout. After reading posts in this challenge, and some of the Gerber episode posts I believe it is a woodsman, not a pro scout, since it does not have the scissors. Am I correct?
[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
-
That sounds about right. There was a model that didn't have the scissors, had the RemGrit saw blade, and may or may not have the replaceable cutters that was part of a maintenance kit that came with a flashlight. I don't know what it was called. :dunno:
-
Day 26
I used the Pro-Scout's combo edge blade to open some mail. I think it was important. Apparently, they have repeatedly been trying to contact me concerning my vehicle's extended warranty. ::)

I love my Al Mar Sere 2000! :) (I actually have 3 of them....one has the black blade)
They have VG10 blades and were made in Seki City, Japan
Ai Mar died in 1992 and his widow died in 2017
In early 2019 Al Mar Knives was sold to a Maryland USA company Edge Technologies Engineering LLC
The current Al Mar Sere 2020 knives in my opinion are not as good. The current ones have D2 blades and a flipper and are made in China . The quality is not the same.
If I was you, I would try to find an Al Mar Sere 2000 that was made in Seki City, Japan.

Yes, Al Mar was a designer for Gerber.
I used to have one of his multitools and like an idiot i traded it off for a knife I just had to have at the time.
I should have kept it.
I also used to have an early Al Mar Sere that was quite a bit larger, but the guy who sold it to me had a son in the service that was going to Afghanistan
at the time and asked if I would sell it back to him for what I paid for it so he could give it to his son for his deployment.
I couldn't turn him down because that is exactly what the knife had been designed to be used for. His son was glad to get it. :)

Kind of a busy day in the Jones household. Started the day helping the wife with taking down the Christmas decorations in the living room. I don’t know about you, but for me it is a bitter sweet feeling. Only thing left inside is some garland and the bare tree. It is so sad sitting there with no lights or ornaments. At noon, we ventured in to Seattle and parked at Westlake. From there we caught the monorail to Seattle Center. and saw the Holiday Train Set at the Armory. After that the youngling expresses a desire to visit the EMP, the Experience Music Project. When I mentioned EMP, my wife gave me a sideways glance and said, don’t you mean MoPop. I guess some time ago they changed the name to the Museum of Popular Culture. Anyway, we had a great time exploring the exhibits. Later on, we caught the monorail back to Westlake. On the way back the youngling started to fall asleep, so we cut our adventure a little short and head back across the floating bridge and home. Sorry for the long winded post, we are just really enjoying spending some time with the little ones.
Great posts today, guys!

Day 30: Thank you all for making this so much fun! This month absolutely flew by! I really enjoyed carrying this tool, and it's going to see a lot more carry time. It's a tough, well rounded tool kit that gets the job done without a lot of added frills.
As I've mentioned throughout this challenge, it is going to find some additional stable mates, and I want to try my hand at modifying one.
Don't forget to put in for your badge, and I hope we can do a challenge together again soon!

Day 29
Great posts today folks. Managed to get a few moments in the garage today. It is always relaxing to get a little bit of time working on some projects. Was also able to get the younglings out on an adventure to Ballard to visit another troll and also got some time to visit the locks. We watch some Tugboats and Fishing Boats pass through locks on there way out of the Lake Washington Ship Canal.
Nice pic. jonesE! :like: :tu: :tu:
Glad to hear you are making new memories with the younglings! :hatsoff: :hatsoff:

Day 30
Sure has been a fast month!
I felt this photo was appropriate that the puffin is coming in for a landing as I will likely park the MP600 for a while in favor of the MP400.
I'm sure glad Barry hosted this spur of the moment challenge and that he was able to get quite a few participants and onlookers cheering from the sidelines. :hatsoff:
Now to either take a challenge break or look into joining another one on New Year's Day! :salute:

Day 30
My :hatsoff: to everyone who completed the challenge. I've enjoyed it immensely. I think I like my early 1990's Mister Pinchy better but there's some emotional attachment there as it was my first long term carry of a pliers based MT. I still need to get to a hardware store and buy a saw blade to replace the RemGrit blade in my Pro-Scout, but I have been saying that for several years now and Mr. Pinchy didn't even have a saw blade. Anyway, today I used the can opener on the Pro-Scout to remove the safety seal on a bottle of hot sauce.

Day 30
Wow!
At one of our favorite Mexican restaurants. Crunchy beef tacos, brisket burritos with pico de gallo, barbacoa steet tacos, yum!
30 days already. It has been fun! I do appreciate and enjoy carrying my MP 600s more. Thank you Barry for hosting this great challenge!

Sorry I haven't responded in a bit. Outside putting the 600 to work doing an oil change and tire rotation on my car with Spartan19, my son. I had a great time with this challenge and with you all! It's the people that make this fun. The tools are a bonus! As an added note, we're the first to complete this challenge in some years from my understanding. It's great to see everyone involved, whether participants or following along. I haven't been on MTO as long as some (it was an old PST that brought me here back in 2015), but I can honestly say that I've not met a better group of people anywhere and I've got some miles on!
On a similar note, I hosted a Center Drive Challenge here some years ago in memory of a member who passed away from Cancer and loved the Center Drive. I posted a thread to see if anyone was interested in doing a Center Drive Challenge later in '24. If so, just respond or PM me and I can get it set up. There's already a badge. I've heard from Alan and JonesE already.
In the meantime, Happy New Year to everyone!

Sounds like your car is set for the New Year, Barry!
I agree that we have a great group of people on MTO. :)
Happy New Year!

Happy New Year’s Eve everyone! Like most of you, I can believe how fast the past 30 days have flown by. Thank you Barry for hosting the challenge and I want to thank all the participants and members for their enthusiasm and support during the challenge. Some observations about the challenge and the MP600. For me, I was kind of struggling there towards the end. With the holiday season, everyday chores, and whatnot going on, it was hard to remember to record what was going on. I wasn’t as engaged as I wanted to be. As for the MP600, I have always know that it was a beast. I have enjoyed how fast it is to deploy the pliers. The Philips driver has worked well for me, especially on the ST model. I have always enjoyed wharncliffe blade, and the on the MP600 works well for a variety of tasks. I also, liked having the scissors for when I needed to cut string, threads and parachord.

I use a camera rather than my phone and sometimes I accidently take a picture in auto mode instead of normal mode and it is huge. I then have to open the picture in Paint and resize it from 100% to 40% in order to be web page appropriate so I can post it.

Happy New Years Eve!!!
Great Job by everyone, even the followers.
I will admit, it took some strong will power to NOT go out and buy a MP600, even JoneS extended an offer in the early stages. But at my advance age, it would be foolish of me to adapt for a new tool set no matter how tough and bulldog durable it it is.
Congrats on the badges, I took a bit to catch up on the few days of camaraderie I missed while taking care of business of the personal nature.
It was a pleasure and a honor to follow and contribute.
Truly a great bunch, SUPER COOL GANG of the MP600😄
Now if interested, a tool fashioned after the Gerber sliding pliers, the Leatherman OHT, which is being or has been retired by Leatherman, is getting a last hoorah with a January 30 Day Challenge. That starts on New Years Day of 2024.
Please join the few good members who have joined, 5 is it?
Our numbers are few, and we will strife to be as Cool as this group.
I try and get a link…. https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,91410.0.html

Thank you
Besides I love seeing your adventures visiting the Trolls in your area. It was a big coincidence as I let about them no more that couple months ago. Knew exactly what you were sharing…👍

Congrats to all. Your posts and pix were great. I finally got caught up on all of them. If you feel like it, I would like to invite all of you to follow along as the minor leaguers try to cope with everyday life using our 58mm SAKs. There will be some excellent photos and posts. By the others, of course. I will be my usual annoying, petty, boring self. Best wishes. G
;)
-
 All!!! See you there LC! I'm looking forward to going back to back with these two tools.
Edit: I can't find the OHT anywhere on the Leatherman USA site.
Gary, I think you're going to find that 58 will do 99 percent of what you run into EDC wise. They'll hit way above their size!
-
Barry, you'll find it under retired products, right between Mini Tool and PST. Long live the flickers!!!

 Oh yeah but it's worth it!! The Army got me started on hot sauce (Tabasco, so not even in the neighborhood) but I've moved on to spicier versions  My youngest son girls it in a league waaaaay above my taste factor 🔥🔥🔥😱
