Awesome collections posted. I've just started getting into the SOG's. I have 4. Question, did the older Powerlocks (larger tool) not have locking tools like the smaller Powerplier?

Awesome collections posted. I've just started getting into the SOG's. I have 4. Question, did the older Powerlocks (larger tool) not have locking tools like the smaller Powerplier?
Scott
A brief timeline:
The original geared compound leverage tool from SOG was the Power Plier. A bit later they brought out a smaller version, called the Pocket Power Plier. Neither of these had locking blades. Then came the PowerLock in 1998, which was the first tool from SOG that did have locking blades. Shortly after the introduction of the PowerLock, SOG discontinued the original Power Plier.
Hope that helps! :)

J-sews, thanks for the clarification.

There sure are some incredible SOG's in this thread. Mat's Power Plier TiNi is one I would like to lay my hands on! The 3 plier heads that Allan has on his Power Pliers are great, 2 out of 3 ain't bad for me. Chako has a rainbow of Mini Tool Clips and I spotted a couple of variations on the Stanley Mini Switchplier. And all the other pictures are great too...
Gareth: The gear scratch on you P3 is interesting, it always seems weird to me that the gears can scratch the plier head.
Allan: If I come across a case of Blackie Collins sheaths for the Paratool you will be the second to know! And I'm right there with you the Power Plier is my favorite also.
Here are my PowerLocks: My favorite is 5th from the left.
And a group picture:
I know this is a multitool forum but the 2 black handle knives are a AutoClip and Mini Autoclip made from BG-42 steel. This incredible steel is kinda interesting so here is some info on BG-42:
I have one Power Plier that has a Quality Control problem...I think it is my only Power Plier made in Lynnword. The plier head might have been stamped "SOG..." incorrectly since the G and USA are missing but the sides of the plier head are parallel.

Ok, so who has a TiNi or Tiger Stripe Cross Grip? I wanna see them.
Bruce

Great collection.. 8) :tu: That's an amazing lineup of Powerlocks Bruce.. :multi:
Allan: If I come across a case of Blackie Collins sheaths for the Paratool you will be the second to know! And I'm right there with you the Power Plier is my favorite also.
Thank you sir. :tu:
(a BC-sheath containing a Paratool could work too. :))
-
Thanks Allan,
You would never believe how long it took me to collect those PowerLocks.
Bruce
-
Good collection of SOGs Bruce. :tu: There are no other variations of the tiger stripe SOGs. The tiger stripe Powerlock was an exclusive to Brigade Quartermaster. They no longer carry them. They were never plentiful. Now they will be exceedingly hard to come by now. I saw one on ebay a couple years ago and it brought a tidy sum. :D

Great collection of SOGs there Kirk! :tu:
Hmmm, I'm looking at your pointy-tipped Pocket Power Plier. (photo below) It is just like mine, with the new plier head (pointy tips, a larger wire cutter section, etc) and round-head pivot screws. Also the handles on mine have a brushed finish, like SOG used to put on their tools a long time ago.
I wonder why the changes?

The power plier is a great tool. I think a blunt nose powerlock would be great.

The Powerlock is a big s.o.b,but its a beaut to use!
-
I agree, the powerlock is quite large but very easy to use. I have a love/hate relationship with them. Sometimes I love the bulk and strength, other times those darn covers just irritate me.
-
It is funny; I was expecting a smaller multitool, not something in the same class as the Supertool and the Swisstool. Maybe I need to buy a smaller SOG now..
These flaps seem to be a pain. I keep trying to close the blade and the other tools without opening the flaps first. ;)

Oooh, an old one! :tu: (from Edmonds, WA instead of Lynnwood, WA where SOG moved to later) Did you add any of the folding tools, or is that the way it came? :)

After very little thought (good price) I got a smaller SOG product (paladin)
It may be small but in the trousers department it is exacly the same size as its bigger brother...

Yes indeed! :)

I have not been in SOG mode for a while but have managed to pick up a few more pieces. Passed on a couple nice ones the other day and have kicked myself several times since. First off a couple P3s. A Edmonds, Wa. with satin finish instead of matte  and a TiNi. Crossgrips satin and TiNi
-
SwitchPlier. :)
-
Black Tip. :)
-
Some very nice SOGs David 8) 8) 8) 8).
-
David very nice selection and quality pics :tu: Are the black tips the big SOB SOG's  That label on the SwitchPlier kinda answers some of the questions that had been asked about its use, still sweet MT
-
Yes, bw the BT is a big MT. :o :D
-
Whoa, a few of eye-openers there David! :tu: A PPP with shiny finish and an Edmonds, Wa. stamp? I didn't know there were any done like that  And that's the first time I remember seeing that sticker on a Switchplier :o
-
Bob the stamp on the PPP is light and hard to get a pic of. Here`s a shot of it. I`m thinking the SwitchPlier was one of later production. Perhaps the sticker on the SwitchPlier was added later after lots of warranty claims? The SOG product booklet in the box had a 2003 date on it. It also has a Phillips screwdriver instead of a 1/4 inch drive adapter. :)
-
Thanks David :) Any signs that the PPP might have been polished up by some previous owner after leaving the factory? (the partially "erased" stampings make me ask)
The 1/4 inch drive version of the SwitchPlier indeed came first. :salute: I suspect you may be correct regarding that warranty claim / sticker theory. :-\

Bob, I went and looked it over a little closer and it is a possiblity. There seems to be other hints of a little to much time on the buffing wheel. But the inside of the handles appear to be satin finished also. I went and looked at my PowerPliers which V1 matte V2 satin V3 satin from Edmonds, Wa.. The PP satins are similar to the PPP. With the exception the the stamps are a little better. Altho one of them has a light stamp. At this point I cant say for sure. I`ll study it some more when I have more time.

I just got by Black Paratool.

Two really awesome people I know gifted me a display case that they made and the SOG group fits well in it. :)
It has a good distressed finish and is assembled with dowels instead of nails/screws. I love little things like dowel construction over nails/screws. :)

I also like alot the old folder (Fielder) that I had too, ::)
I wish I didn't give that one away but I know its new owner uses it a lot and enjoys it :salute:
I also like the red dot of the other 2 folders (safety? ???) and that you have all the odd one (Baton, Sync, etc. :ahhh)
-
Thank you, Sir!
The red dots are blade safeties and those two knives need them. Especially the Trident Elite (one with strap cutter), since the springs are so strong. :ahhh
The oddball SOGs are some of the later additions. I just need the Baton Q1 and Q4 to complete the set, but that will have to wait for other paychecks.

Received one of my "grail SOGs" today. U.S.A OG Switchplier. I was pleasantly surprised when, what I thought were rust marks, came off with a deep silicone oil cleaning. The MT appears to have been carried little and never used.
It was filthy, but cleaned up well. You can see from the pictures in the listing that I thought I was in for a big-time restoration.
It just needed some good cleaning skill. :woohoo:

Thank you, TP! It really is extraordinary in its' design and execution. Why they discontinued it, I don't know. The action of the little plier system is soooo smooth. Similat to a bigger SOG. The modern crosscut feels gritty and stiff in comparison. :)
I'll keep my eyes peeled for another CrossGrip on Ebay and let you know when I see one.

What arrived today?
ANOTHER OG SwitchPlier. Thought I'd pick a cheap(little bit used) extra of this tool. I know the pliers are a bit weak, but I think this will pair well with a SAK. :)
1st pic: not cleaned yet and hanging would with other SwitchPliers. 8)
2nd and 3rd pics: the tool after cleaning and a few minutes with a black sharpie (permanent market..haha).
4th pic: added to the "beater tool" cigar box. All of these have a great or mint condition sibling in the collection(except the blue LM-knockoff).
-
Finally got in the OG PowerPlier. :)
The main reason I wanted this one is the awesome plier head. I pictured it with another PowerPlier(newer rounded pliers).

Nice one JM! I've always fancied getting a ParaTool - it has a very pleasant old tool quality to it... if you know what I mean.
-
Thanks Fuzzy... I think I know what you mean... finishing on the tools seems not as good as on modern ones... the metal material (at least) on the blade (though I like the PE blade V-grind) looks softer than modern ones... I sharpened it quicker than sak blades... but maybe this is just me...

I might have missed some differences in between the 3 PP versions I have, I took an in-depth overview on them and this is what I found, :salute:
The one with the lanyard (on the left) is the newest one, I am inclined to believe, and I think none of them have been modded :tu:
From L to R:
Plier head:
a. very rounded and polished plier head, without any sharp corner, all the jaw's edges are chamfered, these are the longest and slimmest
b. rounded tips and pliers, but not as much as the first one, there is less chamfering/rounding on the far back of the jaws, closer to the pliers, and it is not as long and slender as the newer jaws, but not as short and stubby (blunt) as the oldest ones
c. squared ends, defined edges and sharper, straighter corners and lines on all of the jaws and pliers, they are also shorter and stubbier
(https://i.imgur.com/dDegNFl.jpg)
Saw and tools:
a. the newest one (left) has a 1/4" driver, a flathead ended file, much coarser, and a saw with much finer teeth
b. the old one has a round-end file, Robertson screwdriver and a wide teeth saw
c. the oldest one has the same saw, same Robertson driver but the file is an even older version of the flathead ended file, I believe previous to the round file (ignore the wear on the file)
Handles:
they seem to be the same on the three, the newest one (now on the center) has a lanyard attachment that the other two lack, I believe it came like this from factory, ???, and the screws are the same (Hexagonal) on all there :)
so, with no absolute certainty, I am pretty sure that the changes have been:
Version 1: wide teeth, Robertson, flat file, thick stubby squared jaws
Version 2: wide teeth, Robertson, round file, thick stubby somewhat rounded and chamfered jaws
Version 3: small teeth, 1/4" driver, flat file, thinner slimmer rounded and chamfered jaws, adds a lanyard ring attachment
that is not an undebatable statement, and any modding of the tools would change that, but it's what I've come to believe after this exploration of my three PowerPliers

ParaTool got me messing around with oldschool SOGs (PowerLock an earlier..non-fixed plier).
Left to right.
Early ParaTool, later ParaTool, early PowerPlier, Later PowerPlier, early PowerLock pre-patent, early PowerLock 2.0, PocketPowerPlier pre-patent(made in Edmonds WA), and PocketPowerPlier (made ib Lynnwood, WA).
I'm always amazed at how well these older SOGs were built. :)

Took a $37( $30+$7 ship)gamble on Ebay with no photos of toolset. I saw the shortened handle covers(some have the shortcovers to allow using the drivers at half stop w/cover shut), so I knew it was one I didn't have. To add icing to the cake, it was BO, and I didn't have a BO PowerLock. It was listed as used with sheath. Received it today and am thrilled. It is a Black Oxide PowerLock Traveler. The traveler is bladeless and quite expensive when new. The tool has not been used and everything is the way it should be.
The BO is still fresh enough my fingers are a little black. So, that is a good thing, as that means it wasn't used much (if at all).
I haven't had the best luck on Ebay lately, so this was a welcomed surprise. Should make an excellent shelf queen. :)
I am just excited about it. :woohoo:
-
:ahhh :like:
that's a rare one to find, and when somebody asks (quite frequently in the forums) for a bladeless tool I always spit out the classics (Victorinox Jetsetter, Gerber Dime, Gerber Bladeless MP600, etc.) but I never mention this one because it's really expensive and hard to find, :P
so you got an excellent price on a very cool tool!!!

It is crazy the Traveler (PL w/o blade and added Robertson driver) cost almost twice what a regular PL does. :ahhh

A Paladin Tool PT-540 made by SOG. Issued to all the field techs at work. This one is very handy for telephony, and IT work. The punch for 66-blocks, and Bix-blade saved me quite few extra footsteps.

That is a thing of beauty, eTrip! The PT-540 is one of those tools I covet. :like:

I think it's discontinued, :P
sadly because it's a sexy looking, tough and functional tool :gimme:
IMO, older SOGs were the kings and epitome of SOG quality :salute:

I'm tempted to agree with that last statement. Just got this Pocket Power Plier (I think), an auction win. I think it was a steal at €30 including shipping. Pretty good shape, the blade and implements looks essentially unused, the pliers are lightly used. Anyone know a date (range)?
-
Looks in good condition D_T :like: :tu:
-
Agreed. Experts: is that plier shape original, or modded?
-
I am sure GLBM will know :tu:
-
It's a newer version with the current plier head and pivot screws. :tu:
-
Thanks Fuzz :tu:
Although: current? I can probably go with 'last available'... no such product on the SOG site as of now.
Any idea about dates?
I've given it a bit of a clean and it really is almost pristine. Small scratch on one plier jaw and one on the blade tang, is all. I'm chuffed :D :D
-
That news to me! :ahhh I haven't been paying much attention to sog for a while.
Not sure about dates, but I got my last one about 2010-ish and that was still the old style pliers and solid hex screws, so after that? TP might know?
It's an excellent tinkering sort of multitool, if you know what I mean. :tu:
-
Also, just noticed that yours has got a plain blade, which is excellent, somebody's swapped that in as they normally come with the crap chisel ground part serrated one. :tu:
-
Might as well post pics of my one. I swapped out the file and ps blade for plain blade and saw (had to remove a teeny-weeny amount of stock from the back to get it to fit).

I am inclined to believe that one is second generation (first Gen being PE blade, round end file, no lanyard ring, second Gen being PE, squared end file, lanyard ring, new style head and screws, and third Gen being 50/50 blade, squared end file, new style head and new pivot screws, lanyard ring ) that is, not the first but not the latest one.
But I am not sure :ahhh :dunno:
-
Thanks TP... that would put it around which date?
If mine originally came with a lanyard ring, it no longer has it...
BTW here I went hoping for a better file than on the PAD. It is, just slightly, but not much... ::) No LM or Vic quality by far.
-

OK, so I am not an expert and definitely not good at dating, but
it has new style plier tip (pointier instead of rounded), thus it is China production and not old USA. It has Allen screws so it's also an indicator of Chinese made, what means it's post 2007 :salute: I think SOG introduced their gear covers in 2009, so if it has them, it must be post 2009. Yours doesn't.
It's an S44 model (does not have 1/4" driver socket) so it's still in production, that would make yours a 2007 to 2018 made model? :dunno:
sorry I cannot narrow it down more but a you probably know SOG doesn't keep much info of their own changes and updates, it even took Chako quite an effort to know that the PPP was introduced in 1998 :P
-
Thanks TP... Fuzzbucket also suggested 'still in production' but I can't find it on the current SOG online catalog (or I'm blind).
No matter, if it's that new 30€ ain't too much either :D
I like the compact build.
-
Just had time to read the wiki page, which confirms your general timeline except for the gear cover. No gear cover, but China model pliers and pivot screws - that would put it at ca. 2007-2009, wouldn't it? :dunno:
Just curious, nothing crucial for me to know ;)

It's massive even compared to the PAD (centre)...
And the Powerlock may be better finished and nicer to look at, but its handling of bit sets is inferior (almost useless 90° position of bit driver due to handle cover being in the way and orientation to the inside of the handle, thus requiring opening of pliers...)

Were there only three models made  :tu:
-
Ah.. sorry. The three versions are of one single model. The only real difference(though the tool lodouts are slightly different) being the plier-heads(v.1 being blunt nosed with huge bolt section, v.2 blunt nose with mid-sized bolt section, and v.3 being needle nose with small bolt section). The SOG PowerPlier was their first compound leverage pliers multitool(their first tools were the ToolClips and ParaTool). Released in the mid-1990s and through the early 2000s, then replaced by the PowerLock starting in 1998. :)

third from the left it's like SOG said "Hey, let's see how many "SOGs" can we put on the tool", and tried to write it in every corner, but for the next gen someone came and said "whoa whoa, back up guys :o, we gotta remove some of the lettering there :dunno:. So much stamping of the brand will eventually remove too much material to the point where it weakens the structure of the pliers :ahhh"

What SOG is that?
I have not seen one with a real wire stripper like that before
What other tools are in it?

MMR, its a SOG-branded Paladin PT-540 multi-tool. This one is dedicated to telephony/IT work. My supervisor 'gifted' all the 'field techs' with one. This one; is no-longer made under this trademark, or SOG. I wish SOG would re-issue it under their branding again. These are becoming 'high-dollar' collectors. Comes with both the punch-down bit for 66-blocks, and BIX. Also has scissors, screwdrivers, and the 'usual suspects'. Leatherman should note this, because if they made a 'IT-dedicated tool' it would-be a super-seller! :D

It’s an awesome looking multitool for sure.
LM used to (I don’t know if they still do) make a version of the Squirt that had a wire stripper instead of the usual pliers.
If it’s any good, I don’t know, apart from that I don’t think leatherman has made any MTs dedicated towards electrical work

MMR,
Bear and Son makes a fairly good electrical tool. The 155EL. The tool locking system is lame, but the unlock bat can be removed and still allow locking/unlocking by lifting the adjacent tool.

Hmm....it doesn’t seem like the soSmurfpillst dictatorship called the E.U. will not allow its citizens the freedom to buy Bear and Son knives locally.....looks like we have to order them from the US and have some bald eagles fly them over here...

Have the three versions of the PowerAssist now. Took forever to find a 1/4" screwed USA version(left), and it is an EOD with C-4 spike to boot. :woohoo:.
The middle is a transitional version. The right one is a modern version.

May need to carry my PowerLock sometime this week. :)
-
PowerLock is probably the last remaining SOG plier I'm vaguely interested in trying.
-
:iagree: the quality looks much better on the older models :tu:
-
Funny thing is that SOG still makes the good old style tools. Not sure why they thought anyone who likes a PowerLock would like an Access better. :dunno:
The Access is an o.k tool, but it pales in comparison to the PowerLock and Assist.

Added another heavy hitter.

My newer camera has been having issues recently(so most of my photos have been cell phone shots), so I am trying my old one to take an updated SOG heavy-duty MT group shot.

I am not 100% certain, but discarding variants(deluxe[when for tool variation like PPP Deluxe], military toolsets and alphanumerical designations for differing toolsets) and tools they made for different companies(Paladin, West Marine, Stanley, Harley, etc. etc.), I think it is around 30 notably different model bases(there are nearly endless variations of many). Not perfectly ordered, but a rough list - Pliers and scissors based only:
All of these have a unique frame and handle set made for the model name.
1. ToolClip.
2. Micro ToolClip(OG).
3. ParaTool.
4. PowerPlier.
5. PocketPowerPlier
6. PowerLock.
7. PowerLock 2.0.
8. PowerAssist.
9. PowerGrab.
10. PowerPlay.
11. Reactor.
12. PowerAccess.
13. PowerAccess Deluxe.
14. PowerDuo.
15. Switchplier.
16. Switchplier 2.0.
17.Sync I.
18. Sync II.
19. ToolClip(new).
20. CrossCut.
21. CrossCut 2.0.
22. CrossGrip.
23. Snippet.
24. Baton Q1.
25. Baton Q2.
26. Baton Q3.
27. Baton Q4.
28. PowerPint.
29. PowerLitre.
30. BlackTip.
Please add any base models I may have missed.
At some point I'll work on a list of tools they made for other companies(examples: Paladin, West Marine, Stanley, Harley, etc).

While appreciate the extensive and tedious lists(and have made some of my own), I prefer base model lists as a starting point to collecting. :)

The smaller one is a late model SOG CrossCut (they also made a similar MT with pliers called the CrossGrip).
If you take a photo showing the tool components someone may be able to tell you what the larger one is.
