Title: Wish me good luck, people! :D
Post by: N_N_R on July 27, 2015, 05:35:35 AM
Alright, today's my Master's thesis defense, sooooo wish me good luck! :D

Today'll be the day when I get free, either forever or until November

And tonight'll be the night of the beeer... either to celebrate or drown my sorrows, lol.

Will I be a Master... or not. This is the question.

I have another "problem", though.

Before all the crap happened earlier this month, I'd decided that after my graduation, I'd buy something more expensive and fun for myself, just so, for no reason, just to reward myself for all the effort. Later after the bad stuff you know about happened... I've kinda lost my desire to buy whatever and on top of everything I don't even think I need something or can choose something.

So ... do you have any ideas that can make me  again? I'd bookmarked a ton of Spydies and some lights on ebay/local dealers.. but then dks & Eth sent me the Olight coolness, so I can skip the flashlight stuff and focus on sharp edges...

Months ago I had a thread where I asked for your advice to tell me what SAK to buy, of course I bought none back then  So now it may turn out to be the same.. after all your effort and attention, I may again not buy anything, but it'll be at least fun  :pok:

Or I could just go for a book on Battery Education for Beginners :D

Seems like there are many who like the smaller Spydies so maybe one of those.  If you are looking for a larger knife I really like the Tenacious ( price to value ) however for my money I'm a fan of the Native.

@Aloha,

Yep, I love the smaller spydies, so I've put a few on my watching list. The Pingo is amnog them, of course. But no smaller than that as it'll get a bit useless for me. I've also got an orange Delica and don't remember what else. lol

So... this is what I have in my watch list currently. The seller is the guy who I bought my first Spydie from and I trust him, it was rapid shipping.

= Spyderco Pingo (ok this one only is from another seller), orange
= Spyderco Endura, orange
= Spyderco Tenacious, blue (but it's very similar to the Ambitious, just bigger, so probably no)
= Spyderco Persistence, blue (same issue)
= Spyderco Salt, yellow
= Spyderco Centofante
= Spyderco Dragonfly, orange (not so sure, juuust in case)
= Spyderco Delica, orange

For what its worth, my favorite Syderco is a Terzuola. Just feels right in my hand.

+1 Pingo Orange
+1 Endura Orange (emerson opener is fun, though stock is only in black scale)

You want a million to give all of us some Spydies?

@Zoid,

Yeah, I like the Stretch, it'll be a bit of a stretch for the budget, but oh well. I deserve it  I'll look and add it to the watch list on eBay, lol

@ColoSwiss,

The Terzuola also looks nice, but is again more expensive than I'd like.

Anyway, I may find it second hand even somewhere, good idea.

There are SOOOO many models I didn't even suspect existed.

I have to check the size of that one, though. I hope it's not too tiny :D

It always looked smaller to me, but hopefully it's larger than the "buggy" ones :D

Cut the Tenacious and Persistance from the list if you have an Ambitious. You desperately need a steel/quality upgrade.

My first was a Tenacious as well and I love it, but outgrew China and 8CR13MOV fast.

You NEED something from Seki City Japan or Colorado USA or both.

I always considered the Italian and Taiwan-made ones to be more collectible than user-ish, but if you prefer some models from there and can afford them, they are also a huge upgrade over the China ones.
Title: Re: Wish me good luck, people! :D

Thanks for the advice Corwyn :D

Or this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Victorinox-Alox-0-2600-L1221-Cadet-5-Colours-Limited-Edition-/221831763413?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_77&hash=item33a63415d5

Or another beautiful SAK.

lol.

But. I somehow feel these pretty SAKs are mostly for collectors and I won't be getting as much work of such one as from a Spydie...

To compare with your Ambitious:

The Salt has 7,6cm blade, the Ambitious is 5,7cm. So the Salt is almost 2 cm longer ;). Of course the Ambitious does have a somewhat wider bladeshape.
Title: Re: Wish me good luck, people! :D
Post by: N_N_R on July 28, 2015, 02:58:48 PM
Thanks, bmot!

I do favour a longer blade, the width isn't that important for me, the Ambi can get a bit weird when cutting an apple, for example.

Right now I'm also kinda hesitating probably between an orange Endura or Delica... simply because the prices for which I can get them online aren't that much higher than if I buy them from BG. And even if they're cheaper, I never know if it won't get stuck in customs and I'll have to pay additional fees.

I do like the Pingo, but it's not available at home, it's again more expensive than the usual cheap crap, so it may also get stuck in customs.. and the thought of either of these getting lost somewhere drives me nuts.

Title: Re: Wish me good luck, people! :D
Post by: bmot on July 28, 2015, 03:01:18 PM
On the Pingo: I have one, and really like it :) But it's not so suitable for cutting apples, at least, with the short blade :)

I really like the bladeshape, though. Very useful when opening boxes.
Title: Re: Wish me good luck, people! :D
Post by: N_N_R on July 28, 2015, 03:03:56 PM

Thanks for the vaulable info, bmot !

I've just asked the guy in the store to make a list with the available Spydercos .. because it's allllways like this: whatever I choose, a light or a knife, it's always sold out.

They make nice discounts for the members of a blade forum here and regular customers (like me) :D There's always around 15% off, so it is often safer /in turns of customs and package losing/ to buy from there instead of eBay orders.

So I guess I'll see what's available there, I've given the guy a price range. He'll tell me what he has and I'll see...

I say get yourself a FFG Delica.  Not too big, not too small, and a great slicer.  Then again, that last might not be such a great idea for you, sering as you're attempting suicide via the slow version of the death of a thousand cuts...... ::)

DKS  :twak:

:D

Devil,

I've really been looking for a long time at the Delica and Endura. But I'm reallyyyy new to knives, so I don't know the first thing about them. Now I looked at these two on eBay, reading the specs and honestly, I could see no difference  Unless the listings were wrong, which I doubt.

So can someone please sum it up for me, what's the difference between teh Delica and the Endura? The steels, the lengths, the thicknesses, everything looks the same.

Mostly the Endura is a larger version of the Delica. Besides that they're quite similar. (Note: I don't have these so this is just what I get from random people on the internet :P )

Links, for the stats:

IMO, it's the perfect sized EDC. Extremely light-weight and easy OHO :tu:

Easy OHO sounds great!

Moreover, I've been watching these for really a long time. So I'll wait for the guy to tell me what he has available, if it has Delicas, I'll probably go for one.. even if it's not orange.

Brown would have been my second choice. I do hope you get one - they really are awesome :D

I think the Delica is probably one of the most popular Spydie's, so I would guess most shops will have them ;) Not sure about orange though.

Well, if not orange... probably gray or green or blue, not sure about the purple or brown.

I don't know what real hue they've got in real life, though. Those photoshopped thingies usually look better online. My orange Buck was very bright orange online and more of.. brownish, ceramic... dark orange live.

It turns out that guy here doesn't have Delicas aaaaaaaat all. Although there are whatnot versions listed on the site. SMURF.

Then he offered me some insanely high price for some Endura, so I assume it's some weird more expensive model.

It seems I'll have to order from abroad again and hope for the parcel to arrive and not get lost or stuck in customs  :salute:

I've also looked at the Paralimitary, but maybe it's a bit too bigger than I'd like my next knife to be :)

Paramilitary is pretty small, half way between endura and delica.

Ok, the Endura is out of the list, too. It's toooo huge. 12,7cm sounded rather long, but now that I saw a guy with a big hand hold an Endura.... it's enormous.

Oddly I feel very comfortable with Endura's size. Delica on the other hand simply has a too small handle for my hand. Exact reason why my Farmer has kicked the Sage 1 as the most carried folder in my rotation

Maybe it's not odd, you're a guy after all, you're probably ... bigger overall :D

So, on the list already:

= Pingo, orange
= Spyderco Spy-DK, orange
= Native  (not sure)

.....

The Salt also turned out to be biggish ... I just hadn't looked at their sizes so far, I was lost in the huge variety of models, so I was looking for something I LIKE. lol

So, the Pingo and the Spy - DK can't be opened with one hand, otherwise they're cooool. The only advantage the Native has is the OHO. So.... it'll probably still be the Pingo.

We'll see :D Still looking.

@firiki,

Yeah, I want a Spydie for some reason, though. Thanks :D

I loooooked at whatnot online stores here, nobody has a Pingo, gr. Or another one I like.

I've been looking at a Victorinox Sentinel OHO for ages...

I love the colour of the Hunter XT, too, orange.

I wanted to have a OHO, corkscrew and a bottle opener, but nothing matches, lol.

But if it's gonna be the Sentinel or the Hunter XT... neither has a bottle opener, the Hunter has at least a corkscrew and is orange...

How about a spyderco classic, caly 3? It's pretty small.

The Salt is same as previous gen of Delica so shouldn't be too big, the Pacific Salt however is same as Endura. Or you could always go for a Tasman salt. :D Although I would not get a salt unless you really need something that doesn't rust.

Yeah, the Nomads I've seen aren't OHO

And Why isn't there that Rescue Tool / whatever it was called/, the nice bright yellow one, with a normal blade. They all seem to be serrated or half serrated/half plan/half something else. Don't rescuers need to cut normal stuff.

Not a rescuer, but I'd imagine most of their tasks are to cut clothes, ropes and seatbelts, and for all of these, a serrated blade is better.
Also a serrated blade will last far-far more before requiring resharpening than a straight edge, which is nice for a rescuer who doesn't have the time/skills/interest to spent time honing blades or who has a 50-car pile-up where he can't stop and strop the blade.

The biggest disadvantage of serrated is that once it gets dull, it's a nightmare to get back in shape...
Title: Re: Wish me good luck, people! :D
Post by: Corwyn on July 30, 2015, 12:20:30 PM
Ow and if you hate serrations, do not go for the Spyderco Salt... it's with the serrations  where H1 steel shines and the Spyderedge serrations are twice as good as Victorinox's, but twice as hard to sharpen as well...
