Title: What are your top 14 cellidor SAK's (91mm)?
Post by: magentus on January 05, 2017, 12:49:38 PM
Secret thread for SAK users to discuss their favourite flavours of crisps (potato chips to our cousins across the pond) without any of the Leathermen knowing.

1. Plain (ready salted)
2. Salt and Vinegar
3. Cheese and Onion
4. Sweet Chilli

I like bacon flavour but it repeats on me something awful, so I rarely go there.

I'm not a fan either. Like many Dutch I prefer French fries, drowned in mayonaise.

When you say unwashed peels, do you just mean unpeeled? I like those too, but I don't like the idea of 'countryside' flavour  :ahhh

Homemade on a fire with the peels with salt and vinegar
Salt and Vinegar
Sea salt and malt vinegar
Salted
About any corn chip.

I live in Germany where they are blimmin' hopeless at making crisps. It amazes me that such a technologically advanced nation can be so confounded by the humble potato chip. I keep telling them that there are other flavours in the world beside paprika but they won't listen...
So every time I'm in the UK I hit the nearest supermarket and invest in a golf-cart-size package of Walkers Salt & Vinegar, which I'll scoff in about 2 days, washed down with buckets of milky Typhoo. Or at least that used to be the routine - on recent trips I have noticed the old British salt & vinegar crisp isn't what it used to be (regardless of brand!)
I can only surmise that some pungent key ingredient (paint stripper, nuclear waste, rat poison or summat) has been banned - that searing acidic kick is no longer there. Either that or my taste buds have shrivelled up & died, thanks to too many salt & vinegar crisps. Anyway, they're so bland these days I don't really bother. I just eat tonnes of chocolate instead - the Germans are good at that. Breakfast of champions!

With goat stomach, heart, liver, lungs, kidney fat and black pepper. Mmmh!

But the best chips are the self mades.

At Subway (sandwich chain that I've seen in pretty much every country I've been to, so I'm sure you all know it.) I get the Baked Lays original flavor. Sure they're not greasy in the way you sometimes crave, but I prefer them for perceived health reasons (not sure they're actually healthier) and less grease on my fingers. Plus I like to put the crisps inside the sandwhich.

Previously I really liked barbecue flavor. Salt and vinegar can be great (Cape Cod brand is one we have here and I like it) or it can be bad depending on the brand.

As for chips (fries), I don't eat cheese these days but back when I was in England I couldn't get enough cheesy chips. I don't care for poutine, though everyone else in Canada seemed to love it. These days my favorite food is probably ketchup. So I need a delivery method for the ketchup and potatoes work great. Fries with ketchup is always good. I don't eat McDonald's fries though. But any decent restaurant fries are great. I could pretty much live off of fries and ketchup. When camping I put several small potatoes on a thick spike and wrap them in aluminum foil with some olive oil and put them over the fire. The spike heats up and kind of cooks the insides. Then I pour ketchup over the lot of them.

Mayonaise however is WEIRD. I didn't realize it was a dutch thing. I hear the Japanese love mayonaise on pizza. Here in the US a lot of people like ranch dressing on fries. For me it's just ketchup and maybe tobasco sauce mixed with the ketchup. (Cholula sauce if available)

It's basically like a skewer or "kebob" but thicker and heavier. It has an oval cross-section shape. Honestly I dont know where it came from.

Let me add my tupence:  I love the extra crispy kettle-style, doesn't matter much which flavor, or none at all added.  Among plain chips, the sour cream and onion is a fav at our house, followed by nacho cheese and cool ranch tortilla chips and the fried corn chips (AKA Fritos), especially the latter smothered in chili and cheese

Here in Sweden we had truffle crisps and while it seems they weren't real truffle (surprise) they had the same taste, not unlike burnt rubber, as all truffle products you meet (oils etc.). Supposedly you can't even make a truffle oil since the tasty stuff wont dissolve in oil but hey, they taste great! To bad my local store has stopped selling them following the great "reveal" that they aren't real truffle.

Don't forget Belgium. This is what I had for dinner in Antwerpen a while back. Actually, it was in August 2005 and I can still taste the mayo.
