Anyone else got an advent calendar?
Day 1: Helikon General Purpose CARGO® Pouch
Never heard of Helikon before, but the pouch seems well made and they use YKK zippers which is a very good sign. Not the fanciest pouch but a great start at any rate.
-
Cool calendar, and it seems to be off to a good start :like:

Day 2: Esbit Pocket Stove
Now I wonder how they got a pot into one of those small boxes... :P
Never had anything like this, guess I will have to give it a try at some point, I think I have somewhere an old pot I can use that is the right size. The fuel looks interesting too. Curious if it is powerful enough to actually heat water in winter.
-
Cool! Looking forward to seeing it in action :like:

Man, why don't we get neato advent calendars like this in the states. I had to "settle" for a Wera tool advent and a Lego Star wars advent. (Not that either are bad by any means.)
Esbit stoves work well but depending on the fuel they stink to high hell; make sure you have plenty of fresh air flow or only use it outside.

Thanks for the tip...

Day 3: Plastic bags :P
Not thrilled about that but I have seen this coming... after all, if every day there would be something like the first 2 days, that calendar would have cost a lot more than $150 (at least here in Switzerland).

Had a Wera calendar a few years back... really nice :tu: however
:worthless:

Day 4: Wire Saw
Always wanted one, but their bad rep kept me from getting one, so now I can test it for myself.
-
Day 5: Compass
I expected a compass, and I expected it to be one of these utterly useless 1ct/dozen compasses... but this one is really nice despite being a no-name brand. The needle is well balanced and turns really smoothly. The magnifying glass (2x I think) has no distortion and gives a very clean picture. It has a metric ruler, and rulers for standard map formats (1:25k and 1:50k).
-
Day 4: Olight M2R Warrior
This one was in an online calendar yesterday at a good price... and I had the hots for it for a long time so I ordered it :D
-
Really jealous of your advent calendar :like: Looks like you are having some very good days in December :hatsoff:

Thanks, I do have a good time... love getting up and opening a small gift, great start into the day. And so far the quality of the content has exceeded my expectation.

Day 6: Anker PowerBank
This is the smaller/older one with 3350mAh. I have several products from Anker and think they are all great value, expecting this not to be different. Another great item especially for someone like me who thinks that the smartphone is an essential survival item due to its communication and navigation abilities. Still, maybe not the most obvious item for a survival calendar, but considering that YONC (the company selling these calendars) started out with flashlights and batteries not really a shocker. Makes me wonder what flashlight they packed in, probably something fairly decent.
Anyone wants to have a guess as to what flashlight and what knife is in the calendar? I put up a CRKT Ruger Cordite Compact with "custom" orange para-cord as a price... just take a number (in order) add your name and your two guesses (light first) as in the example below and you get a chance at the price... Please keep the list tidy.
000 - Etherealicer - OLight X9R Marauder - Fällkniven MB
Contest ends when both items are revealed, but once either is revealed you cannot guess at that anymore. Shipping will happen in January, after the X-Mas craze...
-
That looks like an excellent advent calendar! And thanks for the giveaway.

I didn't mean to :)
There's a SAK on the front of your calendar* and that Swiza is one of the more affordable ones they sell :)
*) Looks like a non-Delémont Vic but they don't sell those

Then it could also be a Buck... wondering how they managed to get a tent into those tiny boxes

Yes... or those shoes, or the jacket :)

Don't be. I'm sure that water bottle is filled with water. Maybe you will get it on the 24th.

Hmmm.... what was this all about again? right...
Day 7: Whistle
It's loud and works well... but this is definitively a cheap whistle with lots of sharp edges. On the other hand its a bit like the plastic bags on day 3, balances things out and I have to say the average item is way above expectation.
-
Day 8: Signaling Mirror
Its a smaller mirror 5x5cm with a targeting hole and a 1cm diameter cat eye in the center. Since I don't have one yet I give it :2tu:
-
But there's no pic :ahhh
-
But there's no pic :ahhh
Of course there is... you liar :viking:

Ah sorry I must have been mistaken then
And that edit was just for fixing a small typo, right?
But in all seriousness, nice mirror :)

Oh noes, you quoted my typo
Can't wait for tomorrow's surprise. All I have are three IKEA advent calendars and those are really boring :)
-
Day 9: Emergency blanket
Another standard survival item. I noticed this is the 2nd BCB international item, a UK based company. Anyone know about them?
-
Day 10: piece of wire
Another quality item :P, now the average is below expectation... but who can be sad if the future X-mas present arrives and even the box is this pretty :D
Ok, in all fairness, that flashlight costs as much as the calendar

Day 11 - Key Smart
First item I have no idea how it is supposed to help me survive... but it might help them survive as this is a gateway drug to longer screws, more colorful sides and other accessories they sell :P
-

Welcome aboard Zoids...
Day 12: Matches
They work... that is about the only good thing I can say about those... considering that a regular pack of matches is about 50ct in Switzerland they put all stops and really invested in finding the cheapest... :hatsoff: well played
-
In the beginning I was wondering what cool item I would find today in the calendar... now I'm at a point where I wonder if they can top the previous days disappointment... today, once more, they succeeded
Day 13: Garbage
Matches, no matter how cheap, I can use... but this... I lack words to describe it, but there is no other use than throwing it away. I just hope that does not take the spot of the Flashlight/Knife :ahhh
Thought I could have some fun with it before I dump it. Holding it with 2 fingers I managed to destroy all tools... the flat round weirdly shaped thingy (cap lifter+ screwdriver maybe?) took the worst. Not sure what the triangular thing is supposed to be, but it is too blunt to open letters. Direct contact with a Classic Blade (which is still pristine) resulted in some serious dents and it works poorly as pry-tool :P, maybe I can keep the keyring.
Would recommend :tu:
Had they made the light-button red... it would look like a well known reindeer.
-
On a more positive note... this baby arrived today. :D
-
Day 14: Rite in the Rain Notepad
Sweet, wanted one of these for a long time... there was also pencil and a sheet of plasticy paper (no idea what this is for). Perfect for shower-thoughts:
"A ton of people is literally 12-15 people"
"DO NOT TOUCH" would probably be a really unsettling thing to read in braille.
"When people think about travelling to the past, they worry about accidentally changing the present, but no one in the present really thinks they can radically change the future."
"If Google matched people up by their browsing history, it could be the greatest online dating website of all time."
"The Swiss must have been pretty confident in their chances of victory if they included a wine bottle corkscrew on their army knife."
-
Day 15: Pen
Not much to say about this one... except it's made by Mitsubishi
-
Got some more stuff... I think that is all for this year ::)
There is also a knighthoodie that arrived today... prettttyy cool... if you are 12, kinda weird if you are over 40, but whatever :D
-
I think I speak for all of us when I demand a picture of you in the Knight Hoody E. :pok: So much win there.

Do it!
And where can I get that calendar?
[It's not failure if you learn something from it]

Thanks! Will save that and hope they have one next year

On popular demand... damn... I look buff
-
Day 16: Water purification tabs
This item will go straight into my "survival kit". I seriously doubt I will ever use it, but this is kinda must have for a survival kit.
-
I think you are using the hoodie the wrong way  or your thumbs are backwards?

Cool hoodie anyway!

Day 17: Foldable water bottle
No label, no marking, so I had to measure, it holds 0.35l. Handy item. I had some concerns about the mouth-piece, but filling it up and putting preassure on the bottle did not produce a fail :tu:
-
Also, went to the store... they still had Lego City calendars... 75% off, at less than $7 I could not resist :D
-

Sooooooo jealous!!!!
-
Day 1: Space Shuttle
So simple... so recognizable :tu:
-
Day 2: Minifig
-
Day 3: Go kart
I think the proportions are lacking, but far from bad.
-
Day 4: Dog
-
Day 5: Sleigh and ?
I think there is coming more...
-
Day 6: I wanna build a snowman
-
Day 7: Minifig
-
Day 8: Drone and controller?
-
Day 9: Streetlight?
-
Day 10: I have no idea...
Any guesses? Street-hockey goals and ball but it would be huge...
-
Day 11: Train
Another great micro-build
-
Day 12: Ice cream machine
:tu:
-
Day 13: Minifig
-
Day 14: X-mas presents?
-
Day 15: Weird looking rocket...
Kidding, another great mini-build.
-
Day 16: Cup cake cart
-
Day 17: Minifig with cooooookiies... must be from the dark side
-
Nice pics. I've been following the advent calendar posts on Brickset.com. Pretty cool.
-
I've had the Lego calendar two years ago. The minifigs are fun, but you can't really do anything with the micro builds if you have a city. But well, you can use the bricks for other stuff.
-

Yeah... some of it you probably could use, like the train could be a child's toy-train. The Space-Shuttle is way too big for that.
I don't really do Lego anymore, gave everything away a few years back, so that is what I'm going to do with this stuff too... but for now, I'm having fun :D
-
Nice pics. I've been following the advent calendar posts on Brickset.com. Pretty cool.
Thanks, maybe I should check that one out, to see what Day 10 is supposed to be.

Street football goals I believe. They look a bit... weird.

Yep the hockey goals 2 years back looked a lot better.

Day 18: Survival guide
Lot of information cramped on this A4 sheet. Most of it is rather superficial but I will have to go through it in detail to really evaluate.
-
Day 18: Off road truck with jumping ramp
Love these micro builds...

That is cool... I was thinking monster truck but the wheels are too small... looks more like this:
-
Day 19: Sewing kit
Kit is so meh... but the etui is nice.
-
Day 19: RC cars
-
Day 20: Light my Fire, firesteel and whistle
The whistle is useless (too small, I can barely get a sound out), but the steel sparks nicely
-
Day 20: Construction machine
Probably my favorite mini-built so far
-
Day 21: Sugar cane clock???
-
Day 21: Body Warmer
Made in Japan. Has a shelf life of 2 years. Pretty neat...
-
Day 22: Toy robot...
anyone got a clue what that stack is supposed to be?
-
Day 22: Best Multitool EVER!
TVs in the 30s were sharper than this knife edge... and that wavy thing is not a serrated blade, but a saw (can you see how un-even it is?)!!!
-
Day 23: Helicopter
love this build
-
Day 23: Paracord bracelet.
Guess I will only get a flashlight OR a nice knife (more likely will be a flashlight tomorrow). Not my color and a cheap clasp. But Parcord is always useful and you can simply attach it anywhere.
-
Just noticed that the pictures from Day 3 and 15 were missing, I blame the forum update
-
The stack with the robot is a load. That needs lifting.
I guess that makes the clockwork robot a binary load lifter.
-
Day 24... girl/boy with weird hair?
... wait, its Santa
-
Day 24
:ahhh
THIEF!
The box was empty
:ahhh
-
Wait... why does my wife have a new flashlight  usually, she just takes one of mine
Why is there an empty box.
Wait a minute :viking:
-
I have a great wife, she lent her new flashlight to me for a picture. Alright... we have a winner. :woohoo: congratz Reinier, please PM me your address...

Well, i will steal it back once my wife is at sleep, so I can get a bit of a feel for it.

Day 24: Olight i1R EOS
Well, i will steal it back once my wife is at sleep, so I can get a bit of a feel for it.
Got four of those, one for each member of my family (except my girl, being 2,5 years old she's a bit too young for it) as a Christmas present. Great little lights, with awesome power for such a small thing.
(and no, that's not what she said :twak:).
-
Purchased an i1R EOS during Black Friday for my car keys. Love how tiny and bright it is.
-
Took a couple of items out into the "woods" during my lunch-break.
-
Making a hot cup of tea
As advertised, the fuel lasted 10 minutes. I was heating 0.3l in a titanium mug (poor thermal qualities). They claim it can heat 0.5l in 7min, but it failed to boil the water, it got adequately hot to make tea though.
-
The wiresaw got stuck a lot, despite having pressure to open up the cut. Put some elbow grease into it, but it cut really poorly. The Spirit was through the branch faster than it took to the wiresaw for that small cut.
I'm glad I had a chance to test one, but it goes straight into the bin.
-
The card tool is slightly better than a plastic card at scraping... but that's about all, it does not cut and certainly not saw... straight into the trash bin.
-
Light my Fire Firestriker
First off, the whistle is a total waste of plastic. It is utterly useless. My first attempt at making a feather stick (and I think y 2nd attempt at using a firestriker), not stellar, but not the worst either. The wood was slightly wet, so I used some cotton towel. Had troubles using striker with the cord on, so I cut it off. Still didn't work much better. I upgraded to using the Fällkniven F1 as striker, worked much better. I almost got it going, but smothered it. Anyway, I was on my lunch break, almost certain I could have managed a fire if I had more time.
Firestrikers are not really my thing... but if I would carry one, I would want it to be bigger.
-
Summary
Keep
Pouch, Esbit pocket stove, Compass, Powerbank, Signal Mirror (Have not really any use for it, but then I also own a Downrange Tomahawk), Emergency Blanket, Wire, Matches, Rite in the Rain Notepad, Pen, Water purification tabs, Foldable water bottle, body warmer, paracord bracelet (the clasp is useless, but you can attach it anywhere and have a stretch of paracord, I probably will put it on my bike), Olight i1R EOS (technically, my wife is going to keep that one)
Straight in to the trash
Wiresaw, Whistle (I have two really nice whistles already, while working it is really cheaply built and with sharp edges), Keysmart (no idea what I would use that for), Garbage tool, survival booklet, sewing kit (I have a better one), Fire striker, Credit card shaped crap,
All in all not a bad yield. Probably, not going to get another one next year (well, maybe I will) because the items will be similar.
-
I'm thinking the Legos are in the keep category E Man, if not, I can find a home for them. :D

Tested the handwarmer... it gets warm enough to keep you from getting chilly on a tropical summer night. So, quite useless...
