A couple weeks ago the kid and I were hanging out on a river bank and we wondered across this water spider.

Last week I was up in the mountains and tried to get a nice pic of this female bush (uliodon) spider but she bolted.

Normally I don't bother posting these types of pics here but last night I had a visitor that was pretty cool so I'm sharing.
-
This is a male bush spider or vagrant spider as some call them.
Being autumn here it's not that unusual to have the males cruising around looking for a partner.
Click the pics for a better look at his pedipalps and palpal bulbs.

Even in Australian "civilisation" it sometimes pays to keep the window locked.
Pretty sure she opened the window herself

Not mine, but had one when I was a teenager. Red kneed tarantula. My sister killed it with a big book when I didn't close it's terrarium properly and it escaped. It was great having two sisters who were scared of spiders and a tarantula that does a near perfect shed every time. The punishments were definitely worth the fun I had. Yes I was a little smurf to my sisters :D

Same here. I'm no fan of them, but my wife and teenage daughter like them even less, so I am the designated exterminator.....thankfully we get nothing along the lines of the beasts posted in here :ahhh

You have never heard of the flying spider then, have you?
FLYING SPIDER (http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2015/08/150818-spiders-animals-science-flying-forests/)
Might I suggest a PHOTONIC FENCE (http://www.intellectualventures.com/inventions-patents/our-inventions/photonic-fence/)? I'm sure that can be upgraded to shoot at spiders...

No longer living in Australia, larger visitors are a lot less likely now.
The local Lower Hutt spiders just seem to be just lacking a little.... presence. They just don't seem to have that X factor to hold the attention.

Still I'll never forget one time at a school camp on the Lower Coromandel, sitting around the fire, looking down and discovering I was wearing one of these fellers as a broach.

That is a pretty one. Pablo, you're fine, it probably wouldn't survive if it crawled into the baggage hold or the passenger compartment.

I don't mind Daddy longlegs spiders, but I kill White spot spiders as soon as I see them. Big spiders just get evicted (they can make their own way outside).
I actually like the little Jumping Jack spiders, I think they are cute (and also sometimes very ambitious - I watched one once that was stalking a blowfly that probably weighed something like 10 times what the spider did, he did manage to catch the fly a couple of times, but was unable to hold onto it).

Most spiders are venomous, but they can't (and usually won't) bite us, I believe.

Like I said i just read it somewhere,
JR

That's just a myth :)
Also, I have seen that myth attributed to what some in other parts of the world call a Daddy Long Legs which is not a spider but what we call a Crane Fly.
-
It confused the smurf out of me when I typed "daddy long legs" into Google and got a spider. :ahhh
Here we use the name for a long legged fly that flies more stupidly than anything else.
Now I know that the proper name for that is a crane fly. :woohoo:
-
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pholcidae :tu:
-
Yeah, I'd definitely prefer crane flies over those. :D
-
They're harmless.
And it's funny when they walk across a hot BBQ and their legs get shorter and shorter....
-
I never worried to much about Daddy-long-legs spiders, but now that I know they kill red-backs they have gone up considerably in my regard :tu:
-
But I think White Tails kill Daddy Long Legs?
-
But I think White Tails kill Daddy Long Legs?
I'm not so sure about that (but I do know I kill all White tails on sight).
It’s also worth noting the daddy long-legs is one of the white-tail’s more formidable opponents. That’s because the daddy long-legs is incredibly attuned to what’s happening in its web. No matter how careful it is, it’s virtually impossible for the white-tail to avoid being noticed. Once detected, the daddy long-legs will rain sticky silk down on it. In no time at all, the white-tail is wrapped in silk and is being hauled up by the daddy long-legs for lunch.
