Yeah that's not going to happen Eamo. I Will collect you in the U Boat, get Bill to give torpedo tube 2 a quick dusting and throw down a blow up mattress for you to kip on if you admit you capsized Dolly on purpose.

By the way, is this another case of you funny Brits spelling the place differently then pronouncing it?

Like I would read that as "Bi-chester"
But I expect the pronounciation to be more like "Blester"?

Yes Fri, Sat and Sun
If anyone wants we can stay the Mon as well  :tu:

Hey Lads
Still trying to fit this in - But it's a bit challenging - There is lots to do - As you can imagine

The previous week and that weekend I am due to be in Switzerland with family

Now there is a chance I could fly back early to the UK and get to the meet Sunday lunchtime/morning - If anyone would still be there that would be great
Or even if the meet was Sat, Sun, Mon instead of Fri, Sat, Sun - That would be even better ?
What's the possibility ??? It is Bank Holiday Monday!! :tu:

I will not be too popular with the my family - But my wife and son would stay longer in CH and join me back in the UK on Tuesday
If most people would be there I will come back - If most people are heading back home Sunday - It wont be worth it - And I'll avoid the family issues

Let me know chaps !!

Would be great if you can make it. :like:

Does this mean you will be coming to the meet? :like:

Sure does - Will plan to arrive Sunday afternoon sometime - Will confirm exact time later
It's so great that quite a few of you will be there Sunday Monday - Thanks guys ....  :woohoo:
I have the location details - And will have a car
Maybe someone could PM me a couple of mobile nos. just in case.

However will anybody be able to lend me a bit of tent floor space, a karrimat and a sleeping bag?
H - I am sure you can fit all that on your bike - along w all your other gear for your 100m ride or what ever it was  ;)
I may be able to organise some of those if no-one can - But would be much easier if someone could help.
I really don't need much - I am used to roughing it and back-packing etc.

Let me know plans for food - I am pretty sure a bottle of malt and a few beers will arrive with me!

Can't believe this has all worked out   :tu:  It's even a bit freaky   :o

As mentioned I will be flying back to the UK from visiting rellies in Switzerland
.... (Or rellos - as we say in Oz ..... All nicknames in Oz - of which there are many - end in 'o' !! ;) )

What I forget to mention was I will be coming back from a small town you have probably never heard of .... Zurich
However you will all have heard of a much more significant and important town near to Zurich called .... Ibach      :o
..... Not sure I'll make it there tho !     :(

Plane hire is expensive. Flight instructors not so.
Title: Re: UK Meet 2018
Post by: Don Pablo on July 30, 2018, 10:52:01 PM
I dunno, at a premier flight school here, it's +200 euros per hour when it comes to instructor flights, according to a pdf from them. I'm pretty sure that maintenance and fuel costs for a Cessna 172 are much lower.  :)
Title: Re: UK Meet 2018
Post by: Syncop8r on July 30, 2018, 11:01:05 PM
That doesn't sound so bad - we get lots of people from the UK learning to fly here because it is cheaper.

C172 here is about NZD$220/hour, add $30/hour for an instructor. Maintenance would cost a lot, I imagine insurance would too. Not sure about the 172 but I imagine it burns at least 35L/hour.

For a full fledged (4, 6 Seat aircraft) PPL license, right?

I’m starting to think that a license for ultralights (2 seats max) would be a better choice for me, if I were to actually go get a pilot license, in addition to being significantly cheaper.

Touring around in one of these looks very fun.  :D

Depends what you want to do with your license. If you just want to fly ultralights I guess that would be fine.

Most training aircraft are two- (eg C-152, PA-38)  or four-seaters (eg C-172, PA-32).

Route sorted: S. Glos > Wotton Bassett-ish > Ridgeway (wild camp somewhere Friday night after about 55 miles) > Didcot > Long Crendon > on to the meet sometime on Saturday.

Bike is functional - sorted the brakes and bars last night.  Need to finish fettling it tonight and get everything else ready tomorrow so I can get on the road early Friday afternoon. :tu:

A tree must've hit a nearby powerline.
So nobody there can recharge their mobile stuff before:
- they removed the fallen tree
- stripped an abandoned building nearby from any nearby wires
- used those wires to replace the damaged powerline.

Only to find out they could've used the car's USB port after.

What an excellent weekend! Just what the doctor ordered.

Well, actually the doctor ordered avoiding alcohol, and that wasn't quite achieved, but doctors don't seem to understand the beneficial health effects of a fireside drink and laughter with some truly excellent friends.

Weather was a mixed affair. There was the obligatory Tomsoon (a minor monsoon which arrives half an hour before Cupboard - really good to see him again - and departs an hour after he's gone), but there were some clear skies and pleasant sunshine too. As mentioned above there were some very sudden, very short lived, and very strong gusts of wind (which occurred before the group's cooking session of biryani and edible napalm, so I can't be blamed for that) which brought down a few branches on a couple of nearby trees. It was nothing as substantial or disruptive as last year's branch fall though, and our merry band of log botherers soon cleared the area, and converted it to fuel.

Modding nature with modded tools. :D

Once again, I saw the arrival of the dawn after stopping up all night drinking and talking with a Welshman who has opted to not sound Welsh, only for them to bugger off and leave me guarding the fire as soon as the sun started to come up (so Saturday night I went to bed at noon on Sunday - but was back sat round the fire for afternoon tea). It was a different Welshman who has opted to not sound Welsh than the usual one, but otherwise a very familiar pattern of behaviour. Hoardes of zombie squirrels were deterred, and the fire was roaring and kettle was full when the rest of the gang arose from their slumber - although one did have to be revived by bacon. Sparky bloke was actually beaten to the the dawn fire duties TWICE this year, by two different members on two different days.  :ahhh

My vision and balance was somewhat squiffy as is usual these days, so no piccies from me, I'm afraid. I did manage a little cunning ropework and pole notching on the lamppost creation projects, and contribute a little on the catering side, so I wasn't a total passenger (though that reminds me to thank Kev again for getting me safely down there and back, keeping us sustained with the BBQ, and providing the clubhouse to keep us protected from the Tomsoon). I did actually take a few projects with me to attempt, but mostly spent the weekend just relaxing and chatting, exchanging wit and wisdom, and having a jolly good catch up.

As always, I came away with a few extra goodies, (a UK legal slippie, scale and craft materials, MTO goodies, a few edibles, a hole making egg whisk, and a bench mounted nipple clamp) and managed to leave a few with others too. Our good friend TD managed to inadvertently leave without all of his belongings again. I think he's gradually working up to somehow managing to leave without remembering to take his car.... although he's still not quite up to leaving furniture yet, so Mags still holds the record on that I reckon.

Really great to see everyone again, and also great to meet Huntsman (what a nice chap), our first non-UK resident attendee. North European members should take note, that turning up from outside the British Isles is indeed achievable, and it is actually possible to do more than just talk about maybes.  :pok: It was a shame that not all could attend, or stay the full duration, but the UK Meet remained a great success as always.

Thanks for another truly excellent weekend everyone, and also for looking after me in my more defective moments.  :salute:

Are you home yet H  ???

Hey

Wanted to say a big thank you to all the lads for looking after me so well this weekend
I turned up with pretty much nothing ....
I was provided with a bed and bedding and roof for the night - I was fed and watered most excellently (lots of tea and some stronger stuff) - And of course enjoyed your wonderful company.
Not only that there were lots of extremely interesting toys to play with - and the axe throwing was great fun -
And I gotta say I was pretty successful at it - with almost a 100% sticking in rate .......  As long as I hit the targets .... quite a few went sailing over the top
- Now I know why we go to an otherwise empty camping location !!!  :o
But there's more ....... The lads all turned up with various presents for me, which was totally unexpected and extremely generous of you - Thank you all

It was a real privilege and a bit of luck to be able to join the meet  - And to meet up with my digital friends in the flesh 10,000 miles from home
- Not sure I'll make next year's meet - But can recommend anyone to go

Long Live MTo    :tu:    :D

This was early on Saturday morning.

Had a great time as usual.  Rode over on the Friday and arrived about 9.30 in the evening.  Kev and Sparky made the tea and 50ft provided moral support (read: little in the way of actual assistance :D) while I put my tent up in the dark.

Up early-ish on Saturday to find that more firewood had blown down the previous day :woohoo: and Sparky had brought even more axes  :woohoo: so spent most of the day drinking tea, talking smurf and using axes to either throw at things or chop things up.  50ft had cooked and dehydrated a chicken biryani so we had that for dinner - very nice it was too. :)  Made a very large dent in Taxi Dad's whisky that night.

Sparky very kindly brought me breakfast on Sunday (I think he was itching to get going as he'd promised me a lift into town to go shopping) then we headed off to Waitrose for provisions while it was yakking down.  I also got the chance to take a look in his fabled shop - I'll never know how he manages to cram so much rust stuff into such a small space. :D  The rain cleared up by the evening and Huntsman arrived :woohoo: so we were able to get the barbecue on and commence operation-eat-it-up whilst going on to make a slightly smaller dent in Huntsman's whisky.

Monday morning was spent mostly avoiding packing up, but eventually I had to get going and headed off into the wind for a very long ride back. :(

Was really good to see everyone (Sparky, Kev, 50, Taxi Dad, Cupboard) again and great to meet Huntsman.  Shame the others couldn't make it, but hopefully they'll be back next year.  Big thanks to Sparky for arranging the site and providing so much of the stuff that makes the weekend run smoothly, and to Kev for the tents and facilities.  Also to everyone there for their generosity, openness and friendliness.  It really is a great way to spend a weekend. :salute:

Another great weekend at the UK meet, a soggy rainy one at times, but great none the less. Thanks again to Sparky415 for organising the venue, and a thank you to everyone that could make it.
It was great to meet up with Sparky415, 50ft-trad, hiraethus and Taxi Dad again, and to meet both Cupboard and Huntsman for the first time.

The others have mentioned some of the weekends activities, and as they say, come to the meet to find out everything.  That being said, here's a few pics/vids of the weekend

The weather was great today so I set to and aired my tent and the club house. They'd been drying in the garage since I got back, and  I also took the opportunity to seam seal the club house to prevent it wicking through the ties and dripping inside like we got at the meet.

It was a great weekend :)

First time eating dehydrated food, first time meeting Kev, not the first time arriving in the rain.

Thanks to everyone who made it happen! I'm sorry I missed the last day.

Gareth - I'm always happy to collect you from an airport or station if that helps :)
