My writing pad is just a single piece of printer paper folded over several times, stapled, and with the edges barely trimmed so as to get individual leafs. :P
Big fan of Zebra, and have several of their stainless steel ones knocking around. In my mini EDC organiser I tend to keep a black Space Pen.
My "good" pen is a Waterman rollerball which was given to me as a present when I started university - I passed all my exams using it so I think it's magic :D
I use a black fisher bullet space pen and carry it often. It's the best value for the $ and still writes after many years.
I have a couple of new writing implements thanks to that fat bloke in red who rides reindeers :tu:

Well this pen truly belongs here at MTO, not only can you scribble on stuff, but the clip acts a vernier caliper using the rule stamped in the barrel of the pen, a tyre depth guage using a seperate scale near the nib, and a ... errmmm ... pocket clip :tu: There's also a reference chart on the back on the pen which gives tapping drill sizes for metric threads from M2 to M20.
The caliper seems quite useful despite the small jaws, and opens to almost 3.1/2" (88.5mm to be precise). The readout on the metric scale is to 0.1mm, but I haven't had chance to test the accuracy on this yet. The Imperial rule doen't have a vernier scale, and just reads in 1/16ths. As for the pen functions, it writes perfectly fine but the ergonomics are utterly horrible. The rhomboid cross section and high sheen finish make it quite difficult to grip and use - well for me anyway. Maybe I just haven't found a grip that works well for me yet
As a back up pen / tool for a organiser kit or glove compartment, I think this is a very novel and interesting item which would be perfectly fine for occasional use. For everyday use - find something else. Mine is definitely heading for the car kit :tu:

This is a kind of "space pen" alternative which doesn't use pressurised cartridges. Instead the action of deploying and retracting the nib actually pressurises the refi - each click apparently pressurising the pen for 150m of writing. Clever, eh? Seems to work quite well too, but in real terms I haven't got a clue what 150m of writing equates to ... never mind, if the ink flow falters, two clicks and you're back up and running again.
The grip is quite chunky on this - chunkier than I'm used to and again feels a little awkward at this stage. This pen isn't slippy though and stays in your grip quite well. The clip on this is very nice in that it lifts quite far away from the body of the pen. Sometimes you can end up straining the clip on a pen on some pockets - not with this clip though. It does sacrifice a little in the way of clip strength for this, but I think it would be secure enough for most people. There's also an eyelet for people who like their pens on lanyards. This one is destined for the EDC bag alongside the Vic Swisstool and all the other goodies that come to the rescue when "normal stuff" fails ;)
I'm very happy with both these items. Neither of them are EDC material for me - but I'm very happy to own them, and they'll be playing a part in my overall kit for certain :D :D
After reading way too much about pens, I have decided to get a fisher bullet. Now my only question is which finish is going to hold up better? I am looking at either the matte black, or the chrome finish. I honestly prefer the look of the black, but the pen is going to be in my pockets with keys and all sorts of goodies to make it look ugly in no time. Has anyone noticed one finish lasting longer than the others? Thanks!

Al you will have to let us know what you think about the airpress as they seem a bargain, HH have them as i was looking this am, im not really into pens but use one a lot at work but tend to use cheapes as they get lost a lot or pinched :D
As an academic, I do a LOT of writing... particularly in red!!!
... By far, I prefer Uni-Ball "Signo" pens, with the micro tip. ...

I have a couple of favorite writing tools, some for their great writing, some for their great design, and some for both features. All time favorite write swung: Parker Roller Ball.
I've been using a Uniball Power Tank for the last 6 months or so.
They're pressurised and waterproof like a Space Pen but 1/10th the price. It's tough, I've had it in my pocket pretty much constantly, and it will write on things most other ball points won't.
Performance is good and it's cheap enough that I won't cry for too long if it goes walkies.
This blog has really good mechanical pencil reviews. Go here for advice on which one to get:

I used to carry a really nice chromed ergonomic brass pen that my dad gave me, but someone really needed to use it so I lent it out and not even 4 mins later it got left somewhere and stolen :(Bummer, but where did you find the ss one? I ended up using a refill cartridge and a bobby pin. JR
Now I carry a stainless $6 wallet pen.
I picked it up when I was in India. I found a similar one in a discount shop close to my house, would you like me to get you one?Oh, no thanks but I will most definitely keep that in mind! I'm good with my mini heat shrink pen,, I have a pic somewhere but have no clue where it is. JR

Fountain pens are my favorite also duct. When I use them, I find that people are very curious about them. Whenever anybody asks about them I always offer to let the person wright with it. Interestingly, people are often intimidated by fountain pens, but when they try it almost everyone falls in love with it. They are always surprised by how smooth fountain pens write and how much control they offer compared to the ballpoints most people are accustomed to. I think many people think that all fountain pens are calligraphy pens. Which you and I know is not the case. It's nice to meet another fountain pen enthusiast.I have noticed this too. Word for word. I let them try try my pen also. A few years ago, I stopped at the gas station in town. I used my pen to sign the reciept. The girl, an OU student, said that it was cool pen. I asked her if she whated to try it. She did and loved it. A few weeks later I stopped in there and the first thing she that come out of her mouth was "lookie at what I got!"

Zebra keeps letting me down. I've had a couple models of their heavy steel versions, and they fail on me. In one, the clicky failed. In another, the clip bent open, and you can't remove it to bend it back down.
I'm a southpaw, so I kinda like that cheap fountain pen they came out with, but mon dieu is it ugly. The pen itself is fine, but the cap is terrible.
I used to use a Pilot varsity, but I can't find them anymore, plus they tended to leak.
Nowadays I just carry a good old Pilot G-2. Simple, cheap, easy to find, long lasting, enough ink flow so it doesn't jam, and when it does break I don't have to hold a funeral. I also carry around a Sharpie Twin Tip.
Parker IM Crome. This is one of the one I carry around.

When I use a fountain pen, I always carry another ball point pen to lend if anyone asks. They're always going: "Why can't I use that fountain pen?"
I always answer: "Do you really need a pen to write something or do you just want to use my fountain pen?"

Can anyone help by recommending a cheap disposable ballpoint pen?Pilot G2's are great. As you see I like purple since I dont have to have blue/black for work. If you are into less waste then you can always just buy refills and keep the barrel.

I've got a Cross and a Parker pen that I've used a lot, but fr just general carrying around I love the Bic's. They are like a prime example of something that doesn't cost a lot, but always works. LIke Bic lighters. But I fond the soft grip Bic's are really very nice to write with. Very smooth and even line.

Just ordered up a uni kuru toga roulette. Pretty excited about getting it. Have to write pretty tiny at work so a sharp pencil is a must. What size lead, back when I used to do drafting this was my pencil, everyone else was using like a .5 or .7 or even a wood pencil and their lines would be thin at one end then fat at another, while my lines were thin allll the way through since I was using a .3! The only thing is you had to get used to such a thin lead and knowing how much you could push cause that lead snapped very easy! Another trick was as you were drawing the line you rotated the pencil, that way you kept a sharp tip all the way around..

I've got the Kaweco Brass Sport and I don't find the cap shape to be an issue at all. Plus if you don't have the pocket clip on it stops it rolling away :tu:Thanks for the recommendation. :salute:
Nice. :like:
Do the flats on the lid line up with those on the body when it’s closed?
I need recommendations for my second fountain pen! :D :pok:
Two requirements:
Under 30 Euros(still figuring out what I like) and needs to have an extra fine nib available(or fine, if the manufacturer is Japanese, like Pilot).
Short length is nice by the way.
Heres what I looked at:
Kaweco Liliput with EF nib: Love the size, but too expensive for now.
Kaweco Classic Sport with EF nib: Seems like a good choice, but on the fence about the cap shape.
Pilot Metropolitan with Fine nib: Makes the thinnest line of anything I looked at. :o
Brass body is cool, nevermind the lack of shortness.
Pilot 78g: Same nibs as metropolitan, and effectively a cheaper plastic metropolitan, so don't see the point of it.
Parker Jotter: Does not seem to have an EF nib option.
So thats about it. Can you help me choose from the list, and/or suggest other pens? :pok:

I write so seldom that I find it difficult writing more than the date and my signature.
I've noticed for several years that if I suddenly have to write more than the above mentioned, my hand is stupid and my writing which was always bad, gets even worse.....almost spastic
This goes away after a few minutes of practice....
Not planning on writing much in the near future, but I did have to use a pen to sign in at a security checkpoint recently......using a pen I would rather not have touched.
I have a ball point knocking around in the glovebox, but I think I'm old enough to carry off the pen in the pocket look
I've seen some really nice Titanium numbers on the youtubes, but nothing available locally and I'm not looking to spend much.
My plan is simple: Parker Jotter like my dad and everybody else used......simple, cheap and can be used to stab an attacker in the eye if needed.... :mn:

Looks very handy indeed!
Neat idea. I used to love writing with pencils. Once I got my first mechanical pencil I stopped using regular ones.
I don't recall posting this mechanical pencil before. Too lazy to look to see. Its a Cross Century Gold Filled. I tried to recall when I got it but the best I can come up with is mid to late 80s. I remember feeling so fancy using it. I never actually looked closer at the end where the black cap is. Its say 1/20 10k gold filled. I didn't have lead for it but I did locate a mechanical pencil with the correct ones ( .7mm ) so now I have a working pencil. :woohoo:
Nice selection. That one on the bottom looks like a tank. .3 pretty delicate?
I love good customer service. Its nice when you dont get the run around and double talk when all you want is a straight answer.

I enjoy using non standard color inks. When in the fountain pen challenge I used purple and green. When I'm in professional writing mode I only use blue. I try to choose a lighter shade so its not confused with black.
So after letting the Metro sit fit a week or two after not letting the water dry out before adding ink I am happy to say it sorted itself out.
Am I the only one who can’t wait to try out all the different ink types and colors? Have my blue black ink ready and waiting now.

Excellent acquisition, not only in beauty but also in function.Oh, I've been down here for some time. The hole just got bigger, now...
(Enjoy your new rabbit's hole ... )
:iagree:Right now, the traditional blue that came with it. I've seen more options, for Kaweco and Parker. I might try some green, brown or purple. This unusual pen deserves an unusual ink, too.
Also a great conversation piece. Years of enjoyment. What color ink are you using?
Oh, I've been down here for some time. The hole just got bigger, now...Show contentI'm soooo going to regret having said that...Right now, the traditional blue that came with it. Naaah, no regrets... (at least that's what what I tell myself ...)
Remember that you're one syringe with blunt needle/pipette away from really unusual inks; one good rinse of that ol' cartridge and an ear bulb flush to the nib and you'll be ready for shimmering, shading, color changing inks galore!
Is your nib a BB, B, M, or itallic? I ask because these sizes allow to show better these characteristics.
Glad it sorted out, and nice looking Metropolitan! :tu: What nib size is it!? I ask 'cause on your sample kind of look like a <CM> ( medium italic), and I really like it!!!
May I interest you in Noodler's Baystate Blue!?!?! A highly saturated, cobalt blue-like ink; just awesome ( and do be afraid of its "horror" stories. My Metro/MR and one of my Kaweco Liliputs are currrently inked with it and they're flawless; you do need to be mindful when refilling as it does stain anything porous and /or organic). :pok: :pok: :pok:
Well, a bunch of smurfing enablers made me get this:

Awlready showing some wear/patina. Maybe 'cause I've been carrying it every day and using it as a fidget toy...
Still my most favorite set; Zebra M701/F701. I've carried one or both of these over the last three years and found them to be just about as bulletproof as you'd imagine solid stainless steel instruments to be. I've replaced the pen refill with a Fisher pressurized one. Working in a hospital environment the stainless comes in handy when they need to be wiped of with bleach or alcohol - no damage at all! They've earned their place ;)Oh yeah, I remember when they first came out, they didn’t even have the pencil, I modified one to use another zebra pencil, I also switched out two other inks to for two other pens, so I had a lineup of three pens like black/blue/red, and a pencil, I even got nail color to put just that little dab on the red and blue ends so I knew what color I was reaching for, I even got a special hip sheath that held all four along with a sharpie that swung from the bottom, actually made the job much easier, cause I sooo loved the pen and the knurled grip, that was until I found a four in one with a knurled grip that had all the same colors and also included a pencil! Like oh sweet!
I kind of fell off the nice pen train. :oDitto, but kinda, I really fell for that knurled grip, yet I liked having the multiple colors, so having both multiple colors and also a pencil was working great, so I found this, depending on how you turn the pen (which ever is up) will come out,, worked great, so when I was doing morning paperwork, if it was good, id give it a blue check, if bad, a red check, management loved it, cause rather then having to go through all the paperwork they’d see what was a “must look at” because it was marked red, vs having to look through everything! Plus it was great having to carry just one pen/pencil, and when you needed to switch colors just hit the button on the clip then turn it to what you needed.. it originally came with a comp point, but also you could switch it to a pencil, which was also great for the other paperwork that needed to be done which might needed to be erased.. so like the perfect all in one!
Have emptied a few 4-colour bics in support of my university notes rather than use a space pen or anything.

Here are my newest; Pilot Vanishing Point Fermo (accompanied by a pair of standard Vanishing Points) and my homemade pen rests.

Vanishing point. Isn’t the point of a pen pretty much the opposite of that?
Thanks
They have parker refills in them so it's good.

Yeah so we are gonna need the details please.
Also curious which Parker G2 refills you guys prefer. Digging the Schmidt Easyflow atm here.
The last brass pens are ebay from a chinese seller, just search for brass pen
I use the parker quink flow medium tip. I find the fine too scratchy. Parker don't do a red one anymore so for the red refill I am using a Monteverde soft roll medium tip.
I don't bother with the gel refills as I also have a nice net of parker rollerballs on my desk to.
My local office store had the Quink refills but I don’t care for em. It was a Fine and it also was scratchy like you said.Looks great, just like my Kaweco. It's gained the same patina.
Just got some Fine Schmidt Easyflow refills in and very much enjoy em.
Here she is after two weeks.

I so want a bolt pen, I’d love to carve it myself on a machine lathe, I pretty much have the blueprint hand drawn on a piece of paper, all made from a standard $3, 1/2” x 8” bolt! I actually made a pen using a 3/8” bolt and the tip of a bic, as seen on the end, the thread is used as the grip, those other blue ones are actually crochet needles, I must say a very nice pen, a light aluminum pen, both flat ended or tipped! Yet also a retractable one made out of something aluminum and by Lowe’s kobalt section.. sorry about the pic, if interested I could take a new one, I thought it was better from way back,When I first started reading, I though you meant something like this, not a pen made from a bolt…
JR
When I first started reading, I though you meant something like this, not a pen made from a bolt…Yes! I want a bolt pen kinda pretty much like that, something very simple made from one piece of metal so very solid with a knurled grip, but yes a simple bolt mechanism, and spring, that’s it, yet why pay so much for a piece of steel when you can just buy a simple bolt for like $3 and make it from that?
That 09’s got to have some heavy hold to it, when I was in drafting I used to use and I still have it, yup, my 03, that thing would break idk how many times, I had to have a very easy hand, yet I was also taking plumbing so I also had to have a very strong hand, not an easy mix, most of the others stuck with a norm size yet I think one other kid went to a 05, of course him and I had some of the sharpest drafts, at he end of the year we had to draft the teachers house and then put in a heating system, everyone played simple, yet of course me with the thinnest lead put in a subfloor heating system, (pretty much a line every like 8in, yet in scale was like every 1/4”) yeah NUTS! But I scored a 105 on it..
JR
That sounds amazing. I like that pencil too, an 03 is impressive. I have such a heavy hand even with 05 I end up getting in the zone and snapping the lead, though I do like those thinner lines. I never actually drafted, though I wish I had. we would do all our drawings and stuff with CAD.I did 7yrs of classes in drafting, even had my own drafting table at home for 6 of those, just a plain wood table with a nice metal edge and a pencil rest at the bottom, nothing fancy like a mechanical arm or floating t-square, just 1-t-square, 2-plastic squares, and 2-scales, although I did get fancy the last month of high school, I bought two solid aluminum squares and two aluminum scales, one 6” and one 12”, when I went to college the 12” hit the like marble table and the kid sitting next to me asked if he could see it, I was like sure, so I handed it over and he’s like wow this thing could be a weapon, I was like tell me about it, I don’t have that one anymore, but still the 6” along with the two aluminum squares and a plastic 12” scale, CAD, forget it, I think I tried it once, I’m totally old school, my unique thing is if you give me the side, front, and top, I can 3D draft it, it’s something I can do in my head,, when I took a state placement test to figure out what to do, I got every question right on the pic part, only one other person had ever done it before me, and of course it said I should do drawing or photos,, odd..
I use pens much more than pencils these days (and with the rise of computers and smart phones, I don’t use either as much as I once did). Thanks, I always wanted a Parker jotter, so of course going pencil is an idea but it’s a low lead size, I need above 1.0mm, this is what I’m thinking of going with and I carry it in my back pocket so yeah there’s going to be stress on the pencil since it’s going to be in that slot of the leather cover,, now I did find these yet the one I really like is that all metal one, but I can’t find any info on it except I can only find it on Walmart for $7, so it’s probably junk, now that one above it is a rite in the rain and is a 1.3mm, and I can switch the lead out for red which I’d rather use cause I want something I can use on both paper and other things, just like that last one, thats a 2mm, and a carpenter pencil, so yeah writes on everything, but I don’t think it will fit in that leather holder,
But here are a few to maybe check out…
Someone on this forum (I can’t recall who, or I would give credit where it’s due) turned me on to the Pentel P209. It’s a really good pencil, but I measure it at about 5 5/8” so maybe still longer than what you want.
As another option, I don’t own one, but Parker makes a Jotter mechanical pencil that is nearly identical to their popular Jotter pen. It’s a classy, timeless design and it is also shorter than many competitors at right around 5”.
