A friend gave me a chunk of mahogany recently, and suggested that I might be able to make some SAK scales from it. After finding someone to cut it into "slats", I figured that this was a good idea for a Christmas present for my dad.
So, I managed to pick up a new Vic Fisherman, and Neil (NKB) very kindly sent me some pliers and a backspring, and some metal Vic logos, including the fish!
So the other day, needing to finish by Christmas ( :P) I started on my most ambitious SAK mod so far. Here's the pics:

I'm really pleased with it, and hopefully my Dad (the most difficult person in the world to buy presents for) will too! I'll let you know tomorrow :D

Damn fine job there mate :tu:
Your Dad's going to be well chuffed, I know I would be :)

damn fine gift :tu:

Looks fantastic! Great job man, I'm impressed. Did you inlay the logos or just glue them to the top?

They're glued on, then lacquered over so they're pretty flush.

Beautiful work there, sure he'll be pleased :tu:

I think that the above is the definition of "sweeeeeeeeeet" :salute:
-
Dave that is an awesome job. :tu:
-
Thanks for all the encouragement guys :tu:
It's definitely my best so far, and I just love those mahogany scales. I have ordered another SAK from ebay (a Camper), to make one for myself - a keeper this time ;)
-
You'll be putting RotoKid ( www.sosakonline.com ) out of a job if you keep this up, excellent work Dave.

Lol - keeping him in one actually Andrew - he supplied all the pin stock ;)

Bugger, so there's not much chance of me getting it then :D

Or me sadly, however, when the Camper I've bought gets through the Christmas post, I shall have my own :tu:

And how much would you be prepared to bet on that then?

But Camper's are one of the truly great Sak's :o, it's just plain wrong to break one
Sacrifice a Climber instead, but not a Camper :D

I'm only changing the scales on it actually, it might escape the drill and hammer for a while at least.

But now I know it's controversial, I might smash it up on principle :D

Lol - nah. I basically just wanted a new 91mm SAK, and the camper was the first new, cheap one I stumbled across. When doing my Dad's mod, there were a couple of things I thought I could have done better with the scales, so I want to try again whilst still fresh in my mind. Plus, I liked it so much I wanted to keep one for myself, the knife itself is of little consequence for this one, so long as its new. It will be a shelf queen.

DAMN INTERNET CONNECTION >:( ::)
Good man, everyone needs a Camper almost as much as they need a Farmer :)

That's good to hear. :)

Dave that looks VERY CLASSY mate, nice ++++ :salute: :tu:
-
Cheers Mat. I'm really pleased with it, but I think I can make the next one better.
What I know about carpentry isn't worth knowing, but I took it slow and steady and enjoyed every minute of it. Very therapeutic :)
I need to take much more care on the underside of the scales, I made life very difficult for myself with this one, by concentrating on the sides you can see. Somehow though, I managed to make the sides that need to fit flush against the knife not properly flat, and recovering them was a proper PITA. Lesson learned there though!
But I agree the mahogany does look classy doesn't it? Hopefully, the finish should wear pretty well too, I wanted it to be a user.

I used Plasti-kote spray stuff, it's pretty hard wearing and gives a nice even finish.
