Has this model come out yet? If so, how do you like it?? It's "retro" look caught my attention. Looks like it has no choice but to work.

Looks like Gerber is flogging a dead
Horse Bear, with yet another Grylls product..
If they keep going on like this I'll have to "de-like" their FB page too, just as SOGs.. ::) :P
-
There's still a part of me that hopes their quality will go back up to that of Pete Gerber's times
-
Well... slipjoints are perhaps the type of knife that's easiest to screw up, so I would keep my expectations in check.

Gerber's still got some decent stuff. The Gators, the Freeman guide series, and MP-series multitools.
Also, anything on their product page that's from China and has the type of steel listed is made by Enlan, one of the better Chinese OEMs.
-
I saw some in my Walmart today; I'm kinda tempted by one.
-
:twak: eww
-
I saw that too a while back, can't remember what site, the knife was wasn't even out (pre-order) but yet already discounted. I think it was somewhere around the £20 mark.
To be honest, it was the Gerber name that caught my eye and prompted me to take a closer look . but the cheesy tin box and cheap price and worse the BG endorsement.........well. I think we all know what quality will be........ :ahhh!!
It's a shame when a brand name, especially the ones that have built up a good reputation suddenly decide to go after the money rather than staying focused on what built the name in the first place.

Hummm....I'm not quite convinced myself, but I'll reserve judgement until I've managed to see one in person.

I'll not be rushing out to buy one I don't think :)
-
But... It has a Phillips AND a corkscrew! :ahhh ;) Don't think that's gonna be on my list either.......

I found a couple of Youtubes of the Grandfather knife. ALSO!!! I found the knife at Wal~Mart for $24.97. Now that price seems civilized for this type of knife. So I got one!! I'll let you know how it works!! :tu:

Really don't like the look of that one.. and I'd take a SAK any day of the week.

Looking forward to reading your findings B-T.

Agree :tu: but I do quite like some other "utility knives", specifically something that had more human involvement in it's construction - I have one in my pocket now as it happens

Agree also :tu:

Well, the packaging, that the knife and tin are wrapped in, is an attention getter! On the front:
-Bear wearing his SAS beret and DPM Jacket, his father wearing his Royal Marine Commando beret, and his grandfather(with the pipe) wearing his beret from WWII
On the back:
-the knife's tools/specs.
-A short history behind this knife's origins. WARNING! If you're sentimental, the story might tweek your feelings.
-
Oof. That thing got whacked with the Ugly Stick. Twice. :P

Fair enough. So what knife are you carrying at the moment then? :)
It'd be interesting to see what his grandfather's knife actually looked like since they say it was their inspiration.

From the what tool did you carry today thread ...
Spirit X has been on my belt at work for the last week or so. I'm quite getting into the sheath carry during these colder months as the extra clothing means it's less likely to be a snagging issue. At home I've been mainly carrying a Gerber Balance, or my Dime/Preon Revo/Pocket Tool Chest combo.
Right now though ...

(I tried to clip 'em together for the pic, but they're actually all just loose :P)

The Grandfather does have weight, and a solid feel to it. It doesn't feel flimsy like other Gerbers. The only real negative I've encountered so far is the placement of the Phillips/nail cleaner/nailfile tool. Due to it position that makes it open at 90 degrees,"T" formation, using it as a nail cleaner/file is a bit aukward. Especially for left handed use. Constructive criticism, move that tool opossite the main blade(jacknife style) should remedy that if Bear decides to make a MK2 model.
The only other negative(nitpicky asthetics)would be the rubber handle. Unlike the "tactic-cool" knives Gerber makes. The Grandfather is definately a "retro" design. And if you go retro, go all the way!! And use the handle material used in the original design(wood, bone, stag, etc.). It would definately win hearts and minds.
-
The last slippie that came out under his name - the highly rubberised one - was criticised for having tools which were very difficult to get out. How's the walk and talk on this one? That second Youtube vid showed it to have a decent action to it. Is that the same with yours?
-
I can confirm the decent action :tu:
-
I get the marketing attempt, in that this is 'inspired' from an old cool knife.. but.. this isnt an old cool knife. It seems very optimistic to me to think this made in china tool will be used long and hard and handed down through the generations. It's really really, did I mention really, hard to beat a SAK for cost and value and quality. But hey if it works it works and fills a need fine... but I can be completely honest that no matter how good a BG endorsed knife looked id never buy it just do to the endorsement.
-
t is got an interesting look, I won't go out of my way to get one but if one presents its self I could see me getting it.
