I tend to get shop flyers in my mailbox every Thursday for the local sales that start mostly on Friday. Well, I got home from work and found the usual bundle in my mailbox. After perusing them once I got inside, I noticed something that caught my eye. It was a most peculiar multi-tool that was on sale for a little less than 9 dollars. This was spotted in the Home Hardware flyer of all places. I immediately got into my vehicle to see if the local Home Hardware had some in stock. I have had nothing but bad luck with sales flyer items from this store not being in stock. Thus when I got there and couldn't find the item...I didn't have high hopes. I asked the women behind the counter and she immediately found them. I was a bit happy at that. I missed them because I was looking for something that looked like a traditional plier based multi-tool. I bought 2.
I have never seen this design before, which was a bit surprising, and was the reason why I just had to pick these up before they disappeared.
As you can see from the following photo, this one looks quite odd from the usual plier based design.

The user needs to pull both ends apart, which slides the tool in such a way that the pliers can be deployed. To deploy the pliers, the user need only pull the ends apart, and pivot both handles. This caused the pliers to unlock and release. Yeah, harder to explain than the tool is to use.

A very odd duck indeed. My biggest grip with the design is the ability of the handles to fold onto the pliers during use. Say for example you need to use the tip of the pliers to push something into place. One of the handles may slide upwards towards the pliers once you exert any force. The pliers themselves, due to the design, are a little on the small side.
With that said, the design isn't all bad. The tool folds away into a long narrow package. Once the pliers are deployed, there is absolutely no lateral give on the handles allowing the user to exert a lot of force. You can also tell this was made for the Canadian market with the inclusion of an actual Robertson square driver. Just that alone makes it somewhat of a rare duck in the multi-tool world.
I just found out that you can flick this multi-tool with one hand. Hold the tool firmly using the pocket clip for leverage, and swing it towards the ground rapidly. The tool will slide open and deploy the pliers. Hmmm...this is just as entertaining as flicking open the Gerber sliding plier designs such as the MP600s.
For less than 9 dollars, quite a nice little tactile tool to fondle, er...I mean to use. Yeah...now why can't I stop flicking this darn thing? :think:

Sorry about that. Benchmark is Home Hardware's in-house brand. Nowhere near the quality of Benchmade.

Looks like a rebadged version of this one I found at Orchard/OSH a few years back. Mine was branded "Olympia".

It probably is. I don't think Home Hardware digs too deep when they choose items for their seasonal gadget line.

I finally made it to Home Hardware and got one. Despite the $13.99 price tag it came to ten dollars and change with taxes so I guess it was still on sale. Either that or my math skills are worse than I thought.
