Certainly not the first or only tool to feature what I'd call a closed nested wrench. For example, many of the Leatherman pocket tools have this feature.

Looks like a Chinese cheapy to me, assuming it is even a commercially available tool and not a one-off created for the movie.

Argh, I was sure this was a commercially available product (without the black plastic-y handle). I'm aware of LM's similar one-piece tools but those lack ergonomics and do not look comfortable to use.

The Idea of this kind of wrench is based on an alligator wrench which dates to the mid 1800s. They fell out of fassion in the mid1900s, but was resurected with 90s products like the VersaClaw (still have a set) and newer multitools like the PocketWrench. These however use a V jaw ether open or boxed with teeth or ridges on one side & flat on the other.
This same "What-A" marketing brand lasted a few years and brought us other common outdoor gadgets including:
~The collapsing sports chair in a bag thats common today replaceing older flat folding chairs.
~The square frame folding bow saw mechinism found on modern saws like the Gerber Freescape, OutdoorEdge PackSaw, and Agawa Canyon just to name a few.
As I said I dont know who actualy invented these products as these where shopping network launched; but this is the 1st instance I can remember

I don't know the exact name for that particular type of wrench, but they usually included in a lot of lower end multitools / bicycle tools.
I have sometimes seen them show up under the name "Multi wrench" in the description of the multi tools / bicycle tools they were included in, but if you search for that, you get all sorts of ....let's call them "innovative" wrenches that claims to be the "jack of all trades" wrench.
They look interesting in theory, but however good they are in practice / IRL; I have no idea. Maybe someone who have bought one of the MTs that have them included can shed a little more light on that?

I dont know for sure if this is the 1st but there was an infomercial wrench that was marketed about 25y ago called the What-A-Wrench that was this staggered wrench pattern. It was sold as 2 flat oval plates one each in sae/mm on QVC. They were about 6in long and each had over a dozen step sizes.

Funny thing is that I actually watched the movie the other day, and after seeing it; I have been googling around trying to find any info on it, but I have literally come up with nothing.
Even watching videos about how they made the props and such for the movie, "Tom's knife" (since it was originally his) isn't mentioned anywhere. :dunno: :think:
But with that said, I think it is one of those multi tools from Amazons or Aliexpress cheap departments.. ::)
