For those of you who didn't know already: I've been carrying a different knife every day for the past 7 months, the goal being to do this for a whole year. I will be attacking the last 5 months of the year this Saturday (4th of August).
This month i'll be looking at the Victorinox cousins of last month's 85mm Wengers; the 84mm models. I'll get a good comparison I think.
As far as incentives go for joining me in this month's challenge:
- There's a badge for "EDC a different SAK every day for 30 days" which you could get if you don't have it
- If you only carry thin 84mm knives you could get the Minimalist badge
- You could revel in the fact that you're joining me in this historical event that is "the first person to carry a different SAK every day for a whole year" (and document it?)
- I may decide to do a giveaway if multiple people join me this month (you don't have to do the whole month if you can't)
- I will definitely do a giveaway at the end of the year including everyone that joined in during the year (for at least a whole week) in the draw
I'll keep counting the knives towards my year so 211 to 240.
I'll be once more following the guidelines I set out in month #2 (copy-pasted below). (getting boring but it's a force of habit now :D)
- Carrying/using multiple SAKs simultaneously is ok but we're counting the days and not the knives.
- Need to carry at least one "not carried in this challenge yet" knife every day. (if you're not doing the whole year with me, feel free to reset your list after each month)
- Since this will go on for at least a whole year, breaks are allowed but only due to carry restrictions while travelling or because of hospitalization. Just pick up where you left off once you're back.
- Exact duplicates are allowed but not twice in a row. (do not count as exact duplicates: variations in generations/tool evolution, scale & crest - type & shape & color, wear/damage, inlays/engravings and the likes. Basically, as long as we can tell them apart, it's ok to post them twice in a row). Posting a pic of the duplicates together before carrying them is strongly suggested.
For the record, here's the list of topics for the previous 7 months:
- month 1 [misc] (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,75292.0.html)
- month 2 [84/85mm Alox] (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,75698.0.html)
- month 3 [Metal 74mm/Minimalist] (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,76240.0.html)
- month 4 [65mm] (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,76721.0.html)
- month 5 [58mm] (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,77200.0.html)
- month 6 [93mm Alox] (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,77592.0.html)
- month 7 [85mm Wenger] (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,77902.0.html)

The 84mm models you say? I just happened to get a sentimental one recently. :tu: :salute:
I'll join you for a month! I may just have 30 different ones!
-
Hummm... Interesting!!!
Is Alox allowed?? Otherwise I can't reach 30 days but 15-20

Well... If you have 84mm Alox knives you definitely can use them... Otherwise you are welcome to join in for the 15-20 days :D
Vintage pieces of sizes close to the monthly theme work too... "close enough".
I'll probably do 91mm Vic next month so don't use those :D

By about 210 days I think you started a day after our dear friend and me but I never set a fixed date for everyone :tu:
Also you're both really expanding my view of this category... I've carried these other ones in a more restrictive category earlier in the year so didn't really think the Alox 84mm would fit the description ^^ I was planning to go all cellidor (and nylon if any) this month but I guess I could spice things up... Even though I could last another whole month on just Alox 84mm :D

Victorinox Gourmet
4 twists fluted corkscrew and clip-point small blade; not as old as the previous ones but a discontinued model though.
Not sure I read the traces of the lost metal inlay right but it seems to be written "Winterthur Leben". Doesn't match what's on the blade though...

Awesome piece FolderBeholder! In great condition too!
And Koke, any Alox is generally a win but Cadets are special in that category even if they're "just silver" :D

Day 220
Victorinox Climber Small or Climber 84mm (depending on who you ask), Victoria tang-stamp, sharp cap-lifter, 5 twist fluted corkscrew, old scissors spring, clip-point small blade and generally smurfing awesome :D
One of my latest additions... In fact all of this month's submission are part of the approximately 100 knives I acquired since my last "what's your latest sak" post. It's just too much... Can't handle it at the moment...

Yes, it's a free day, also in Basque Country
Day #10
Tourist without Keyring ... This one is probably the 84mm I use more frequently.
It's a little weird... It doesn't have 90 degrees stop on the bottle opener which was upgraded around '85 but it has a solid 4-turns corkscrew which it was added around '91  so I can't date it precisely... But I like it

Really cool piece! I was a bit skeptical about the 3d scales ("textured"?) but after getting that Christmas one with the snowflakes and another "rock effect" I'm digging it... Just wonder how resistant these textured bits are to edc friction.

Victorinox Tourist, not that old with an SBS bank logo from before they merged with UBS.
As cool as they are... It's getting a bit boring and I doubt I'll do a Spartan-only month... Probably just 91mm so I can mix things up a bit.

Victorinox *unknown* which could've been called a Bantam 3 or... Watch Case Opener, if that weren't already another knife. It's a Watch Case Opener in the body of a Bantam/Bantam 2. Maybe a custom request from Tudor? That couldn't have been the only time this was made... That watch case opening blade is much bigger than usual too.

Ohhh Sorry to hear that...
You know what?? I was also away from home 5 days... I took 5 pieces for the challenge... :pok: c'mon you can do it !!! Don't give up!!!
Otherwise we'll miss many of those 84mm beauties you have

I'm a bit late today.
Day #16 ....half way down...another frequently carried :like:
Tinker Small.
I guess early 80s as it has no 90 degrees stop on the cap lifter, no sew eye in the awl and keyring in the liner. It has a round screwdriver with can opener slot.

    Great pics :like:
My all time favorite and still number 1 for EDC :salute:
But don't assume it's early 80's right off the bat, at least not just because of the non-90 degrees stop or the awl with no hole.
For example, i have two early 2000's with no 90 degree stop. That's a fairly recent thing on the 84mm's.
As for the awl with no hole, it depends... there where at least two slightly different awls from mid 70's till early 90's with no hole. I almost never see this mentioned anywhere...
Here's two of my "vintage" small Tinkers, one from the early 80's, other from late 80's/early 90's, both round Philips with can opener groove, notice the difference in the awl:

Anyway.... sorry for sidetracking the topic a little bit....
Carry on...

Thank you for comment and for following this thread :hatsoff:
I used Detron's SAK dating spreadsheet and jut comment some of the characteristics of this knife.
In my personal experience SAK dating is not an exact science as you well say, on the other hand there could be some pieces which could have been mod or just go through service to explain some of those kind of mysteries.
I'm guilty of assuming that tools evolution for 84mm was the same as for 91mm
My Tinker's awl... On the left seems to be closer to yours also on the left in your picture (the middle one in the comparative pic), is it the oldest one ??

Aah damn! We'll be missing out on all these and more of your exceptional beauties...
I think I read somewhere that as long as you take the pics every day you could post them all in one go when you're back (and have internet access again) and it would still count towards your badge.
Otherwise maybe you can get it next month? I'll do 91mm :D

Victorinox Tourist, once more... But this is finally no longer one of the recently acquired ones... And its even better than the other ones. Sad thing is its missing the advertising inlays on both sides and the blades have been a bit reshaped a bit too much to my taste. Thanks FB! It's in Valais near Evolène... But we've got many such places when you go in the mountains in Switzerland :D

Day 235
Victorinox Tourist. Much more modern. Than the other ones I carried but still as useful.
Bit of a smurphy day today (who am I kidding, the worst this year) but hopefully I can make this a new beginning and carry on with this challenge! Almost there!

There are much better chocolates in Switzerland than Lindt Even only looking at industrial chocolate brands like Lindt. Lindt will beat any British industrial brand (sorry guys, none of those I've tasted even came close) and probably American or French ones (haven't tasted them all but still). For most people the preference is mostly a matter of childhood memories but among other chocolate addicts around me I've never found and Lindt lovers.

Day 236
Victorinox Recruit
Another "modern" one with a big inlay. I'm growing fond of these knives... Almost to the point of considering a Spartan-only month for the next 30 days... We'll see :D

Yes cellidor scales, and you're absolutely right... It's so thin that wouldn't be easy to find it even in the grass ::)
You should advise us about Swiss chocolate in case we can go to Switzerland :D :tu:

I would agree about Lindt being better than anything here, i would imagine there are some small chocolatier shops there that are 10 times nicer though

On the important subject of chocolate I quite agree that childhood memories are probably the thing that matter. I discovered Lindt late in childhood and it's probably a good thing I didn't get hold of better chocolates. Mind it makes really good stuff memorable and a treat. YMMV as usual

For the last day or this month, here's a piece that's one of my favorites:
Day 240
Victorinox "Tourist" - pre-1951 with visible rivets, older can opener, older cap lifter, old reamer, 5 twists fluted corkscrew, clip-point small blade, awesome Victoria tang-stamp and a big ad inlay.

I'll make group shots for months 7 and 8 tomorrow...

Thanks Syem, you're really doing a big effort carrying a different sak each day of a whole year :hatsoff:
You've got an impressive collection :like:
I've already applied for both minimalist & 30-day sak as I don't know if I can request more than one at a time.
I'd rather minimalist if only one is possible, and in that case I'd join next challenge for the 30-D sak badge.

I don't think you can get two "carry" badges at once... Maybe it's only if you're participating in two different challenges at the same time. Carrying 30 different minimalist knives should qualify you for both but I'm really not sure. Let's leave it up to the mods :D

And here's the group shot for month 8:

Really awesome knives fitting well in between the other Vic sizes.
