You carrying both of those today ? :like:The Wave was on my belt through the morning until lunch. My matched set, also have a 112, but that would be to much! The 55 is riding in front right pocket and the 110 rode in the pouch in back right along with walking stick as I ventured through Eagle March near by to see if I could spot the nesting bald eagles. Found the nest but not the birds. Temps in upper 90s with feel like temps near 105. Shower to cool off and rinse off bug spray.

Here is one that I used to carry a lot because of it's light weight. Never could get into Buck 110's because they felt too handle heavy for me and my hand would cramp with heavy use. This is a Gerber Model 1 (also called the Gunstock model).Very light in weight and very sturdy. I stopped carrying it when I found out the ridiculous prices they were selling for;especially in Japan.Very interesting I've never seen that before. :tu:
Here is another one I used to carry a lot.It is actually lighter than it looks. Made by Track Knives for Ithaca Gun Works this one was purchased well used at a flea market for $5 about 30 years ago. Blade was very pitted;probably from having animal blood left on it after being used.Serial # 775 with Ithaca logo(stylized bear paw) Cleaned up nicely and holds a mean edge(convex ground). No nail mark(not needed) and it locks up solid when opened. I still carry it occasionally and it is light enough to comfortably carry in the pocket.
Spent a few hours today with the older kid cutting in a new section of track down the river.Show content(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1808/41673350480_168fa739e1_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/26uwPdL)

The Gerber family was very influential in the knife business for decades.Knife makers such as Pete Kershaw and Al Mar once worked for Pete Gerber, before they struck out on their own to start their companies.

Ray,that Lile is Shweeeeeeeeeet!
Congrats.
Thank you sir. It was one of my first custom knives that I acquired.Got it from a lawyer/client of mine for putting a custom pinstripe on his Mercedes.Came with the box, sheath, and COA. The sheath is unique in that it can be put on a belt on either right or left side and has a provision via a thong to hold it securely in the sheath but allow it to be quickly released.
The client was quite a character in his own right. He gave up his practice and bought a garage to restore vintage Bugattis which he still does. He has several of his own that he races in hill climbs up Mount Washington in New Hampshire.

Cool knife Ray!Thank you sir. One of the things I love about accumulating knives is the virtually endless variety of them. Just when you think you have seen every type of knife ever produced, something else comes along. When researching this particular specimen I found that they come with a wooden bowl that is specifically shaped to the knife to facilitate chopping whatever(usually vegetables).I'll probably look for one of those even though it is unlikely I'll ever use it.
Cool knife Ray!

Nice ones for sure! Number 4 is really nice! :tu:Thank you sir. It is kind of special to me.What I really like about it is how Lile designed the sheath;it has a belt loop on either side so it can be worn right or left handed. There is a hole at the front top of the sheath that the lanyard goes through. It holds the handle in by wrapping around the handle and then passing through the hole. The loop rides on the top of the handle and to deploy the knife you flip the lanyard off and then pull the knife out.Kind of hard to explain but it really works well.

Queen #2 and the Masserin plow for wood Wednesday.
The Queen was my first venture into the so called super steels, I thought if I didn't like D2 at least I would have a nice sunday knife.
It turns out I liked the steel but the grind was .022 behind the edge which is fixed blade thickness.
Finally reground it last week to a more reusable .014 BTE, it now a very impressive slicy knife.

I liked the blade grind, the headless bolster construction and the fact I was offered this with a 50% discount.
I am not sure of the type of wood though.

Thanks Ray! They are great for arthritis and look dang good besides... :DI was thinking of getting one just because it does look like a useful option. Some of these knives have some strong backs to them. I also like on the two bladed knives where they put the nail nicks on the opposite side which makes getting the smaller blade a lot easier!

A little late but I just finished this one up and thought I would post it. An old Imperial Kamp King that I got in a bag of parts knives. It was missing one shell handle so I removed the other and tossed it into my toolbox in the shop to use there. while fooling around out there tonight I came across some old scrap wood in a cigar box and decided they would make some good handles for it. Cut them out and CA glued them to the knife. A little sanding and some mahogany stain and I have a new shop knife. Not sure what the wood is but it is very soft.:tu:

Unmarked custom knife with wood handles.Bought this awhile back and it had never had an edge put on it.It took awhile to get an edge on it(very hard heat treat)but is scary sharp now. Although it may look uncomfortable,it is actually quite easy to use both upside down and right side up.The extension on the rear of the handle provides a nice small finger rest.

Here is one that I used to carry a lot because of it's light weight. Never could get into Buck 110's because they felt too handle heavy for me and my hand would cramp with heavy use. This is a Gerber Model 1 (also called the Gunstock model).Very light in weight and very sturdy. I stopped carrying it when I found out the ridiculous prices they were selling for;especially in Japan.
I am the same way...I always make an offer and go from there. :cheers:Thanks Ray.
Nice score by the way! :tu:
Very cool, toolguy.Thank you. That's how I figure it as well.
.I always make an offer on used items, I figure the worse that can happen is they say no. That is how I got a nice Girl Scout knife from the 60s.
Nice one toolguy :like: :tu:Thanks W.
Members who are familiar with Case knives may know about the series titled "the Rattlesnake".I've seen many over the past 18 months and all of them have been done on bone. Most of them also come with a very cool metal tin.Unfortunately they also come with a hefty price tag.
When I spotted this one it was labeled as used and it looked it but the blades looked as if they still had the factory edge.Unfortunately the seller was asking $75.00.When I searched his history he apparently offers his knives at a very high price with a "make offer" option.
Ah ha,my opening! So I made an offer of $40.00.He made a counter offer and after several counters I paid $50.00 including shipping.Since many that I've viewed were offered at $80.00- $115.00,I felt comfortable with this price.
Now to the real crux of my reason for trying to buy this "Rattlesnake".This was made using oak scales. It's the only one that I've seen.
Well after some time removing numerous scratches and factory tool marks,it's ready to be placed amongst my collection.
Gnarly knife, gnarly piece of lumber and great picture, congrats Steve.
I'm sure Steve knows the rarity of his Ranger.
For those that may not understand,I'll provide a simple explanation.
The "three dot" Buck knives were made for one year. It's also the first year for the finger groove 112.Hoooraah!

Oak and Walnut for WHW.
This an unusual Case Trapper titled the "Eagle Dancer".
I had to look at it through a magnifying lens. It's made from dozens of very small pieces of wood intricately fitted to create this scene.Thats what I was thinking! I have always liked that type of woodworking. A skill I do not have - thanks for the information :hatsoff:
I don't know the history of this knife but it appears to a labor intensive design.
This an unusual Case Trapper titled the "Eagle Dancer".
That is one beautiful knife! That inlay work is very labor intensive. I had a friend of mine(sadly deceased now)who was a custom guitar maker by trade and one of his specialties was inlaying wood and mother of pearl designs into guitars.I wish I had a picture of a guitar neck he did one time;it was all done using mother of pearl, abalone, and ivory. An image of a dragon going the full length of the fingerboard.Took him two months to finish.:sa: two months - that had to have looked fantastic

Both knives are made by Kershaw and were limited edition models. The first one is the Eagle that has an eagle in flight for a guard. The second is the Ram and has a ram's head for a guard and a cutout in the blade with a tiny ram inset into it. A custom knifemaker from Texas(Jim Pugh)used to make a lot of knives like this but I'm not sure he had anything to do with this knife.

Haven't seen any WHW posts yet so I guess I'll start it off. This one probably qualifies as the ugliest knife I have ever seen and I bought it for that very reason. Etched,"Ruth 1990" on the side of a 5/16ths inch thick blade with slabs of wood riveted on,it is cumbersome and crude. Not sure what the crossed eyeballs signify.

Only one for Wood Handled Wednesday this week folks but a nice one: a 3 line Camillus(pre-WWI) senator pen with ebony handles in exceptional shape. It also features a curved stamp on the secondary blade.

Beautiful knife Steve! Who is the maker?
Thought I wood(lol) post up some pictures of wooden handled Camillus knives. This may take a couple posts so please be patient.
The first knife is a 2 blade equal end jack with ebony handles that pre-dates World War one. That is when they used the so-called,"3 line" stamp. What is unusual is the stamp is curved on the secondary blade.

That was a recent acquisition from an estate sale. There were quite a few knives at the sale and there were two of the Catt whittlers;one of which had been considerably sharpened. This one almost looked like a spare and showed little evidence of ever seeing a stone.

I've been struggling for years to take a picture of that knife that represents what it looks like in person. I don't think it will ever happen. The BEM that Queen used on these has intricate figure that is difficult to focus on and the color balance is never right. Regardless, to my eyes it is one of the prettiest scale materials I've seen.
I've not seen Case scales like you have on your trapper before TG. Very cool!! 8)

I'll have to discover a different method of posting pictures as my past method has resulted in double posts and pictures too large to view the complete knife.
We have implemented a new picture resizing module and are still working out the kinks. Go ahead and post when someone clicks on the picture it will come to fit the page so you can see the whole picture. The pictures you posted above look fine BTW :tu:

That's very special. That main blade is what I consider a perfect grind.Congrats.I have a Trapper that is an original from ‘83 that I love. I also have a Jack that I’m not sure which company actually manufactured.
I once owned a CC Barlow with Sambar Stag handles but in a weak moment traded it something I liked better.
Bill Cargill was the originator of CC knives.I know it was sold to BlackJack and then someone else.I believe they contracted some of the production to Queen but I'm not really sure.I think Blue Ridge Knives may have bought the CC trade name.
Holy Toledo Sherry you own some sweet CC's.Thanks. I really like the Cripple Creek and would love to acquire so more originals at prices I can afford.
Bill started that company in 1981 and they were hand made.He was a former repairman for Case knives.
The 1983 would be an original and was made by Bill himself.I don't think he sold the CC name to Blackjack until 1993-1994.
Good-on-ya.
I use to have a bunch of early to mid 80's CC's but I sold all them to help my oldest sister through a very difficult time.

This is an original Buck 2 dot 110 hunter from the era of 1974-1982.This is the way I found and bought it.It's in pristine condition with the old square brass frame, genuine Ebony handles and a full blade. This has a 440C steel blade as well.
They're getting very hard to find in this condition and at a fair price. It seems as though many people who find these, believe they've found a nugget of gold and ask ridiculous prices for them.
Sticking with this penknife for today. For once it coincides with it being on a Wednesday.
David and Steve, you guys always have the coolest trads.Congrats.

This is a case 6265 with a jigged Stamina Wood handles.
I have many 65's with this type of handle,so I decided to make a change on one of them.I took it into the shop, selected the appropriate belt for my grinder and ground off the jigging.I then hand sanded it with several finer grits and buffed it to a soft sheen.
Some time in the future I will engrave the oval shield with something interesting.
Verah nice wood for WHW! :tu::iagree:

This was Sos24’s, she offered to send it to me but I insisted on a trade or other options. She said it saw no carry time and I understand why.
My hands are old, but still can grip.
Other than oiling and allowing blades to rest at about 2 o’clock open position do have any suggestions ?

In the woods for WHW…
Here's a thing that I've owned for about 6 years but I admit it's not something I use. They do have wood handles though. :D Early 20th Century (I believe) and commonly known as "campaign cutlery".
EbonyI may have said this before, but, the wood grain pattern on the upper knife is amazingly stunning.
That is so cool!
My Great Uncle (grandfather’s youngest brother) had the same item! His story it was given to him by an English officer he encountered in North Africa during WW2, provided some rations and petro when their paths crossed before my My Uncle Fritz moved across to Sicily! He told some good tales, thought he actually picked it up while England before returning state side.
IIRC, the handles were much darker than yours. Only saw them a couple of times, he passed away before my GF, but he and Aunt Helen had no children, so no sure what became of his interesting items. 🙄

Wow, some nice entries in this thread. :like:Nice job making that Opie your own!
Here is my little Opie.
. reshaped handle (flatter), also sanded, stained and varnished
. DIY pocket clip
. I made carved an indention in the handle to make blade deployment easier
Side note: This is my second Opinel. My first one I found while hiking the Grand Canyon back in the mid 80's. There was a little stream with some branches laying in it. One of the "branches" had a "designed" look. I reached down and picked up what I discovered was a mud-filled knife. After some cleaning and research, I discovered I had found a little treasure. Many years later, I gifted it to my son.
Nice job making that Opie your own!

It's a beast. There's a name and other details on it (how I know it's gidgee) and found out it was made around 25-30 years ago.
I have to admit that I've never thrown it. :-[
a) I don't what it to get away from me and clobber someone else at the park.
b) it might actually turn around and come back! :ahhh
