Title: Versailles To Serengeti…100/108mm challenge!
Post by: Enginears on May 18, 2023, 10:25:59 PM
Anyone up for a 4th quarter 30 day challenge using 100mm and 108mm? gardeners, safaris, floral, mauser etc?

I was thinking October or November.

Interesting 🧐

I thought the Day Tripper(think that is the name) would be a 84 candidate, but nope, the scales are much longer than the blade.

Yea, pretty sure I will be available as I like the blade on mine.

I’d most likely be in

I took the gardening knife camping to use in the kitchen about 18 months ago but found it too small. Nearly used a GAK trooper in the 90 day Soldier challenge but didn’t so that’d be an interesting challenge

Yeah not too many people interested in carrying these two sizes, and the country of origin sounds cool.  I have had a really busy last month and this, but should be back more starting august. We can push this back a few more months to get by the Aug Alox and Sept COO.

Things have been rough around here the past few months, which is why I've not done too many challenges.

Despite having been retired for the newer 111mm version, I've gotten my old 108mm GAK out a whole heck of a lot more (and the Florist sees a lot of use as my around-the-house knife), so I'm definitely in for this one.

Trapper size, great grip, and a ton of tool density. And, it's often been my viewpoint that Vic should've stuck to the pull-cut saw. Both my GAK and '57 Ranger saws will cut circles around the straight tooth modern versions, despite both being used and abused knives.

The black one is a Walther where unfortunately the Walther logo is worn off. Only when you hold it in the light a certain way you can still vaguely see the contours of the logo.

Not entirely, there are some variations in scales that I don’t have (like the Brookstone mauser-variation) and there are one or more releases with clip point blades from (iirc) Swiss Bianco that I am still missing.

I’ve been having a little break from challenges (having done something like 20 back to back) but go on then, why not :D

As I’m doing the Opi challenge in March, I’ll start a day early if that’s ok….although being in Sydney I’m already almost a day ahead of some you so probably not an issue

Time to polish the GAK :tu:

OK, rereading this thread and Wiki site, my Day Packer is in fact a 100mm.   👍

Not really part of the official start to the challenge.  Just a pre-game warmup.  Enginears told me that he was starting this early to get the thread bumped up.  So, I will do my part.  Either Day 00 or Day minus 1.  A photo I took some time back.  It has a Bijou (that I am carrying today for the Classic challenge) and a GAK which I will be using beginning Feb. 1.
Still time to sign up if you want in, or update your commitment if you haven't already done that.  Could be a lot of fun.  Best wishes.  G

Day -01

Since I have the day off tomorrow (after doing challenges 10 or 11 months last year, and already having 3 months straight penciled in this year) getting to carry whatever for a day is kind of a treat. Stepping outside my usual, here's my "freedom day" carry: a PSTII and the return of my Executive to my keychain. The Exec will probably stay as my trusty backup most of the month.

I only got it about a week ago, but I'm liking it so far. I have also done the biner-to-biner thing in the past, but this takes up a lot less bulk in my pocket.

I vaguely thought about starting early before bed last night, but then I forgot this morning and grabbed the PSTII since I left it on the dresser. A wise move though. I guess I'll be in pan-European mode on March 1st with a Swiss made German army knife and a French Opi.

In the day I bought maybe a half dozen when on sale and introduced at Menards as a holiday special.

Many were gifted, have 3 left and selected the Red as I have 2!hh

So, today is the 1st day to carry this knife. My 2nd Vic Clip blade.

Looking good, Gordon.  It looks like several have opted for the early voting in this district.  I had rather start a day early than finish in March.  Might have something else to do then.  I hadn't touched my 108 for a while.  Between challenges, I carried a Huntsman and a Spartan some.  And a Leatherman.
I got the old beast out and gave the blade a few whacks on my lovely old Schrade Old Timer Honesteel.  Sliced a little paper.  It cut okay.  Took a little time and cleaned it up some.  The GAK not the Honesteel.  I guess we will see who shows up for the challenge tomorrow.  Best wishes.  G

Day 0

Seems like the ideal time to show off this knife that I can't carry for the challenge. This is a modern repro of the 108mm GAK by "Mil-Tec", which appears to be a German company, though made in China. Quality definitely isn't up to Vic's standards (some blade play for example) but not to an extent that it feels unusable or unsafe. I'd rate them towards the lower end of Rough Ryder, Marbles, etc. It needed some sharpening, but the price was right (usually $10-15), so it's not a bad way to get a user for a lot less than the Vics.

It does have the striker/file on the back of the saw-driver-opener, which is somewhat rare on the Vics, which is nice.

Amazing pic and knives. It got me thinking… were these the direct predecessors to the alox soldier/pioneer and the spartan? I am a bit hazy on the history that far back.

Amazing pic and knives. It got me thinking… were these the direct predecessors to the alox soldier/pioneer and the spartan? I am a bit hazy on the history that far back.

Thanks Enginears  :tu: :tu:

The original SAK, the mod 1890 Soldier was 100mm and remained very similar through the mod 1901 and mod 1908 variants right up until 1951, when the mod 51 was released (unsurprisingly!)
This still kept virtually the same form factor but reduced in length to 93mm

Then in 1962 the mod 1961 was released (confusingly and frustratingly for those looking for a Mod61 BYSAK from 1961) which is essentially a pioneer but with a WFK stamp

The best resource I know for all soldiers is:
https://www.couteaux-du-soldat-suisse.ch/J01/index.php/en/les-couteaux-du-soldat

And for the mod 61 you definitely cant go past MTo's very own Myron's blog  :salute:
https://www.roverhaven.com/the-rover-haven-blog/2018/12/16/collecting-the-model-1961-swiss-army-knife-part-2-fun-and-affordable-collectibility-meets-swiss-made

I've been trying to collect each major variation for a few years now, and am pretty close...anyone with a mod 1890 to sell, please let me know  :D

The Spartan descends from the Officers knife from 1897, and although similar to the original soldiers knives is smaller and added the now ubiquitous corkscrew but wasn’t for the military. SAKWIKI has good information on it

Day 1

This Safari will be my knife for this challenge.

Though I’d been carrying a Spartan much earlier, I didn’t really get into SAKs in a serious way until after the 108 mm line was discontinued.  Fortunately, I did manage to grab a couple lightly used before the prices on the secondary market went too crazy.

I really haven’t carried a 108 mm until now, so looking forward to this.

I was pleasantly surprised by how well the Safari carries in pocket for its size.  I think this is due to the overall shape and relatively slim two-layer design.

The knife blade got all the action today, trimming several cigars and opening a couple of packages.

For the sake of uniformity, I will call this my post for day one.  After all these decades of carrying the 108mm, I find it to be light as a feather in my pocket.  Sometimes I think it would float if you dropped it into water.  To test that hypothesis, I located a water source and tried it out.  Eureka.

Day 2

I have a project I plan to undertake.  And,  begin to wonder can my 100mm handle the task?
It is a clip point, not many SAK models are fitted with the CP blade, but ironically I  do have three others😁 I used in the ‘tween challenge in 2023!

[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
Along side my work edc before retirement. A Buck 112.

My project, reshaping the handle of a Opinel N09. To better fit, or try to improve the fit, to my  XXL hands.

The object, pencil marked with areas to be targeted.
[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

I know the handle provides enough grip area, just not convinced the blade is stout enough. Time will tell.

Today I am carrying my Pruner 3. I started by cutting some cord to attach my clip.

The pruner blade is great for grabbing as it cuts, makes easy things like this a breeze.   [ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

The lanyard hole is through the liner and scale, added by me. I think a hollow pin would be great for these 100mm model since barely any have the split ring.

Day 1:   I had barely gotten up this morning, and used it to slice a boiled egg, since I was too lazy to get up and get a knife out of the drawer.

Run-of-the-mill early-ish GAK (no nail file/striker on saw). The first military SAK I owned--I've probably had this sucker ten years or more. Originally, there was a long cumbersome chunk of paracord from the previous owner, and it CONSTANTLY got in the way. I took it off a few months later. Eventually, a length of leather was added--a zipper pull off an old gun case originally belonging to my great-Granddad (I had planned to use it for an air rifle, but the zipper was broken).

I also used the hook in the can opener to help get a pull-tab off a little easier.

Outdoor GAK photo for today.  You might be able to see how the scales are split.  They have been patched and glued numerous times.  Last time I think I used contact cement.  Pried up on one loose end and applied glue with a toothpick.  Let it dry.  Clamp it.  Might be loose again.  I will check.
Any groundhog with a speck of sense is still in his nice warm burrow.  Will one get up on this side of the hill, yawn, scratch his belly, and look out with squinty eyes and see if his shadow is still there?  If they do, they don't tell anybody about it.  Whoever thought a marmot could tell about weather anyway?  Best wishes.  G

To my delight, more of a surprise, the Day Packer’s clip point blade is very  functional whittling.

Nice work, Gordon.  Did you check for any groundhogs on the property?  The old timers used to cook them around here.  I think the coyotes have sorted out most of them.  They might have killed most of the foxes too.  The coyotes did the killing, not the groundhogs.  Haven't seen a fox in more than a year.  I usually get some on the night cameras.  Best wishes.  G

First, a beautiful morning in NE Indiana, the streets were dry (first time in weeks), sun rise was glorious, viewed from my windows, and with a 33 F temperature,  it felt SO  WARM!   Walk was totally relaxing, there was no chill felt, non!

If there is a Woodchuck any where’s near by, he went back inside, there is no way he did not see his shadow.

My area, I do not encounter them at all!  Raccoons and Opossums raid my bird feeders frequently, suburban variety, no fear of people or pets.

Do have an occasional Coyote that wanders into the area, and last fall one wandered across the bridge over I-69 onto the east side and had to rounded up, as he panicked and continued east toward the city.  But, near me, they feast on Rabbit, Cats and small dogs folk leave out in the back yard at night with out watching.

In  my yard, I feed birds, awl types. This then attracts birds of prey that are very good at stripping a finch off a feeder, or sweep out of my tree and startle a Mourning Dove  into flight, but instead slams into my house, falls to the ground only to be claimed by a Red Tail.

Interesting how critters adapt…

But, for me it does appear that 6 weeks more of winter is in store 😢

Trooper went along on a trip to Dollar Tree yesterday.  Then it came in handy to open some shortbread cookies that I bought there.  The kind with the chocolate stripes on the front?  I took along three of them (lunch) as I walked up to Walmart to finish buying groceries.  I did notice that about 70% of the cheap Walmart bread was missing.  No square shaped sandwich loaves at all, and the rather large space they occupied had been filled in with something else.
As Marie Antoinette said when she was told the peasants had no bread.... "Let them eat cake."  I suppose that shortbread cookies (the kind with chocolate stripes) will have to fill in for cake.  I will admit that they probably won't work with bologna and cheese very well.  Oh yeah, I did take a Trooper photo.  Best wishes.  G

So, how many of us still have the guard for our saw, and how many people lost it/chucked it since they don't like it? Mine is still on both my Safari and GAK. I sometimes feel like I'm more likely to get cut taking it on and off than I would be from an accident in normal use though.

Mine didn't have a guard when I bought it.  If you are going to use the screwdriver on the combo tool, the guard is a good idea.  If you push hard against a tight screw, that baby can fold on you in a flash.  From experience.  I have gotten more saw cuts on my hand than all other tools combined.  Best wishes.  G

Mine didn't even have a saw guard when I got it--Lowtech here sent me one he had spare.

For general EDC--it's always left on--as it's rare I'll be using the saw around the house or out and about--but I will be using the openers and screwdriver tip.

For around the farm--guard gets taken off and left on my dresser--since that's when I use the saw a lot.

My only 108s were purchased lightly used, and arrived sans guards.

When I’m using pretty much any SAK screwdriver and I’m going to really reef on it, I either choke up on the tool so it can’t fold on me, or (if that doesn’t generate enough torque) I use my wallet Alox Bantam as a lever.

I’m enjoying all the 100/108 photos.  Wish I had developed the SAK-aholic problem earlier.  Wishing all of you well.

Opening a fancy pear soda we got at a roadside Amish/Mennonite market. Pretty tasty. All that leverage makes it real easy to pop.

Day 5

Used the corkscrew for its original intended purpose.

I’m not sure if was the additional turn of the corkscrew (probably not), having the larger and longer handle (seems likely), this particular bottle of wine (maybe - further testing is definitely in order), or my imagination (possible), but it seemed like this task was easier with the Safari than with 91 mm SAKs.

Day 4: Not a lot going on today, either. Cut some tape, and that was about it.

Normally, price per unit and other "light duty" stuff is my TI-30IIX's job, but I decided to bring out the 30-year-old HP 48G--my "fancy" calculator. It was given to me by a friend of mine who used it in engineering school who replaced it with one of his son's high school calc, and it mostly sat in a drawer as I learned RPN and programming it. Not long after, my almost ten-year-old TI-84 Plus Silver Edition finally croaked. It's a complex calculator, but nearly seven years later, and I'm finally getting the hang of it.

They finally ran out.  Last of the mandarins.  I have a multi-purpose work bench outdoors.  That served as a backdrop for the photo.  I use scrap wood for building stuff like this.  Old pallets generally.  Scraps of plywood.  The tops last several years, then I nail on another.
The 108mm blade felt sharp when I started this challenge.  It didn't want to cut through the mini orange peels too well.  A few whacks on the honesteel brought it back some.  I cut some paper with it.  It cut fairly well, but not as well as a Spartan that was lying around or a Bijou.
Temps were just above freezing this morning, so things have warmed up a lot.  Best wishes.  G

Day 6

Morning started with a bang and a thud at  oh dark something.
Half awake and no alarms blaring, I knew something fell  or I am under attack…
Found a shower rod (spring loaded style)  fell from the tube wall in main bathroom.  No reason,  no explanation,  other than something wanted to disturb my slumber.

So, my day started a couple hours earlier than normal.
Laundry is now on dry cycle,  and  brewed first cup of coffee, awl before the sun has peaked up on the eastern horizon🙄

Day Packer and Coffee is the best I can do at this hour.

Woah nice one! My weapon of choice is the TI-36x pro, but I did go calculator crazy during school and had a Ti nspire cx for a while. Pretty amazing stuff but I am most comfortable with my trusty 36x.

The combo tool is a pretty good screwdriver.  The can opener isn't so great.  It will eventually chew a hole through the top of a can, but not cleanly.  The awl works well, and is an excellent tool to cut a perfect hole in something like thick plastic.  I have used it to repair lawnmower fittings that way several times.
By the way.  Your knot book looked so interesting that I decided to get a copy.  Found a digital download.  Thanks for the idea, Bob.  Best wishes. G

The pocket contains a beat-up Gerber Multilock (that replaced a long line of terrible low-end imports as my 'beater' MT), an Olight i3T, and a Fox 40 Sharx. I usually have a regular EDC on top of this, but I always try to keep an extra secondary carry in my coat pockets just in case I forget something or don't have time to grab it when I head out.

Another photo of a Trooper lounging around.  I did open some oatmeal, but that didn't seem like it would make such a memorable photo.  Once upon a time, I bought 2-cycle oil in little half pint cans.  I would open up the awl, then whack the top of the Trooper to drive it down through the can top.  Might need one pour hole and maybe two vents.  The ideal tool.  Now the oil comes in a little plastic pouch.  I still use the same SAK, just the blade.  Best wishes.  Gary

I am impressed, that puzzle would be something I could delve into and enjoy! 😎

Plus, I must say your consistency of writing the numbers is impressive.  I used to hand write the lettering on mechanical drawings for a tool and die shop, helped to pay the bills.  I good P/T gig I did through tech school and afterwards until Computer Aided Drafting  (CADD), allowed everyone’s  drawings look good.

The bark lifter is an interesting tool being one of the only brass tools Vic has. Like most sak tools it is a very specialized tool that can he used in 1000 ways. So I received a package that specified no blade opening and figured the round tip of the lifter would tear the tape but not cut.   [ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
Lately it has been good citrus season, and i have had some peel go under my nail a couple of times. The lifter excels and cleanly popping the top of these amazing fruits.   [ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

They only put that on there because too many people don’t know how to properly use a knife to open a package, and end up cutting the contents…

Buttered a "bagel flat" for my wife. Those plastic knives are almost worthless when they pull the butter packs right out of the fridge. You'd think they could leave a couple dozen out and go through them fast enough to be "safe" or at least keep them somewhere more cool than cold.

Food packaging! I have used my blades for many packages and decided to grab this action shot.  Scissors?! No thank you  [ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

Also here is a shot of the different badge styles Vic has used. On the black there is the flat gold, flat silver with red center, and the embossed gold. The reds have one embossed gold and one embossed silver. I am not sure of the age progression other than the reds were bought new, and the silver embossed I believe is still being produced regularly in some regions.

Also I am considering my options for filing down the chipped tip, and straightening out the worn blades on the black knives. Those two may be dismembered to go into a super 100mm that has all the blades in one knife…maybe.

I'd round off the tip on the busted one, as having a blunt-tip blade can be a lifesaver.

Day 6;

Yesterday, I got started on fixing a lid to a feed box for good this time, and had made a reinforced lid, but ran into problems with the hinges. They were crudely (and poorly IMHO) placed, and it took A; buying new blades for my power cutting tools (my Skil oscillating tool's original blades were mostly worn-out; and the heavy 1980s Black and Decker Professional Sawzall I have only had crappy Harbor Freight blades in the box--so I bought Bosch), removing a lot of material, flipping the lid 180 degrees and a lot of swear words, minor personal injury, and fussing with my PPE (had to put on a N95 for the amount of dust produced, only to have my safety glasses continuously fog up); and probably, in total, about 10 hours of work to finally find a workaround. I still have to finish fitting the latch tomorrow.

So, what did the GAK do?

The blade opened screws and saw blades (and did some marking), the awl made the pilot holes, the screwdriver tip pried some pieces out that I'd already mostly sawn through with the oscillating tool, and the saw did some quick trim work. If I'd remembered the eyeglass screwdriver would fit the screw holding the tension band on my Dremel's sanding head on, I'd have had to have used every blade.

With the GAK being considerably lighter and thinner than its successor tools, I really didn't even feel it in the pocket.

I have no idea if I know how to use a knife to properly open a box. I don't think I've ever ruined something, but it's never something I've thought about the right or wrong way to do.

I would submit that any method that allows positive and precise control over the depth that the blade penetrates inside the box is a good method, whereas any method that does not provide this (or relies on the length of the blade to provide it) is a poor method and could result in damage to whatever goods are inside the box.

What I do is pinch the knife between my thumb and middle finger (on smaller knives, I’m pinching the handle; on larger knives, I’m pinching the blade).  I place my forefinger on the back of the blade about even with the tip (this finger doesn’t apply any pressure to the blade; it just rests there as a guide).  Then, by varying the distance between the tip of my finger and the tip of the knife, as well as the angle between the knife and the box, I have very fine control over the depth the blade penetrates into the box.

I might not have used Trooper for anything yesterday.  It was still in my pocket.  Ready for duty.  Photo is a pocket dump from yesterday.  I found the cute purple pen in Walmart parking lot.  Folks drop them.  They last a few minutes, or maybe an hour or two until somebody runs over them with a car.  A busted one doesn't do anyone any good.  Best wishes.  Gary

Day 7: cut some duct (and Gorilla) tape to repair a dresser drawer until I can get the wood and figure out how to cut the joints. Glue had dried up, and crude repairs mean I have to make two new sides and figure out how to fix the front (which has the joints cut into a piece of plywood glued and screwed into the front)

Another Trooper photo.  Didn't someone use half a Tylenol tablet to scrape scale from an iron?  Said it worked perfectly.  Oh well.  I had a digital interaction yesterday.  My idea of a digital interaction is scratching my head, but this one came on the computer (which is a sort of digital interaction anyway).  An annoying notice came up from Binge or Bingo or whatever it is called and said it was my AI helper.  Ask it anything.  Naturally I asked it how I could make it go away.  Then I got an AI apology for bothering me when I was in a bad mood.  Under that was the Terms of Usage for the search engine.  I probably commited Chip Abuse or something.  Hurt it's wittew feewings.  Probably slunk into a corner of its server and sniffled.  Next time, I will ask it who put the ring in the ring-a-dong ding.  That will probably be AI corrupted here into ring-a-smurf.
      Best wishes.  G

It is black dark outside here.  Never has been a street light.  Never has been a street.  I just risked life and limb to go outside and get my camera.  I decided to sing a song really loud to let the vermin know I was there.
"Don't bite me varmints,
I'm in the back yard,
Don't give me rabies,
I been feedin your babies,
Don't try to eat me,
I really don't taste good,
I'm gettin my camera,
And going back inside."

Evidently it worked.  I got back inside without any furbearer/IMR interaction.  So here is the photo.  A still taken from an Infra Red video.  You can't put out containers with food that critters will stick their heads in and get stuck.  This one is some overage canned pears in a paper bowl.  Best wishes.  G

G, you are on a roll today, quite a funny thing to read this morning.  Today I have once again opened some packages using my trusty budding 2 gardener. It never fails that during a challenge I will acquire other knives and SAKs that have to sit on the side lines for the month. I was tempted at a local shop into buying my only traditional knife other than my grandpas little Buck 309c. (But is a locking sodbuster traditional?) Along with the Opinels. Moore Maker is sold locally where you live? Outside of some older Queen-made models bought used, I've either bought mine directly from Moore Maker or from a tack retailer located outside of Houston.

Day 8:

Surprised we haven't seen a 100mm Soldier yet. This one's a 1942 Elsener (Vic). They're pretty hard to come by in the US, and I immediately pounced on this one about 4 years ago when I saw it listed on Etsy for a little under $20 shipped.

I know that Rothlisberger does have a service for rebuilding older Soldiers, but I figure I'll leave this one as is for now. The blade and fiber handles are shot, but it still has the strongest springs of any knife in my collection.

Trying to step away from my phone a bit--so this photo was taken with a nearly 18-year-old Kodak.

I don't think I ever saw a guard for a 108mm until a friend at the local flea market showed me a knife with one.  He wanted $10 for it, I think.  For the knife, not just the guard.  It was made in Italy, so I figured it was a copy of some sort.  It had a Bundesadler on the scale.  The saw was dull as could be.  I learned later it was a mil issue.
Oh well.  I have turned down better deals.  Today's photo of Trooper.  I think I used the old knife to open a package from the store.  I looked around a little for some glue to fix the scales at Dollar Tree yesterday.  I didn't see what I wanted.  I might have to pry the things off and epoxy coat the whole under side.  Before a chunk comes off completely.  Best wishes.  Gary

Yeah I am up in OK. There is a boot & leather repair shop that is also a Case knife dealer here in town and the owner is very cool. Always has old antique finds he is cleaning up, and a case full of beautiful traditionals, including a handful of the Moore Maker. I almost bought another that had bone handles, I still may.

One of the surprising results the challenge has provided to this oldster about this Day Packet, is how sharp the blade has remained.  I have to credit the chisel grind for this observation.
In fact, after whittling my beech handle of a Opinel 9, cutting packages, slicing apples, slicing carrots, and other duties I have yet to apply a stone to the blade.   Normally my SAKs with spear points would have required touch ups with this use.

It's surprised the heck out of me over the past year or so. It's only a 4MP camera, and at the time had not been used for probably a half-dozen years or more--and had a sticking shutter. Nearly got thrown out several times. It runs pretty good on the Ikea-rebranded Eneloops from a couple years back.

Might need to post a Trooper photo.  Raining heavily outside.  As soon as I get a break in the precip, I will run outside and grab a camera.  The critters ate heartily last night, I imagine.  I had a small chuck roast and cut it up for stew.  Didn't smell exactly right when I cut open the plastic wrap.  Rinsed it off, cut it up, put it on to boil, thought a while....  Decided to let it cook and then put it outside for the vermin.  I wrote off the ten dollars worth of beef as a loss.  Made a bologna sandwich for lunch instead.  So it went outside and I wrote a song.  When you see the lyrics, you will already know the melody.

Oooooo... we're off to feed the critters,
The critters of IMR.
The bats, and rats, and fat alley cats,
Coyotes, and chipmunks, and b'ars.
A possum might dine by the light of the moon,
With a cute hungry fox and a big raccoon.
We're off to feed the critters,
The critters of IMR.

I thought about putting in "a lagomorph" instead of the cute hungry fox line, but didn't want to strain anyone's brain this morning.  Photos of the feast will come later, unless a b'ar tore down the camera.  Best wishes.  Gary

Promised photo of hungry varmint.  Finally stopped raining long enough to run to the camera.  These things are waterproofed so they can stay out in the weather pretty well.  The camera, not the varmints.  (Rackos love water by the way.)  If the lenses get wet, the photos come out a little wonky.  A hefty black skunk got most of the goods earlier.  Best wishes.  G

Mail Call:

The small box contained two "seatbelt cutters" which are small switchblades with strap cutter/serrated combo blades. Surprised Amazon even sold the things (despite the blade shape, they are still switchblade knives), and at $7 for a pair, decided they'd be worth trying. They appear to be the same as what CountyComm sells as the Rapid Res-Q; so I don't know if CountyComm simply rebranded them; or if these are a knockoff of the CountyComm design.

They fire hard and lock up pretty good. The strap cutter portion cuts great, but the serrations are kind of ineffective.  The opening button is a little small.  I am kind of curious how (and really, if) these will hold up to heavy use.

Trooper with some more odds and ends.  The lock is a Master No. 9 in case you like locks.  The perfect size to put on a girl's diary to keep her little sister out of it.  Or maybe a little dresser top box.  The sharpener is made by JKOS, Solingen.  I also found an old P38 can-opener.
It is strange to me that a little stamped out can-opener that didn't cost a penny to make at the time can work better than any SAK opener.  Certainly better than the Vic combo tool.  Once upon a time when I was a lad, I used to open cans with a pocket knife blade.  It didn't do the blades any good, but it did work for outdoor use.  The sheep foot blade was probably best.  I carried an old Kutmaster for quite a while as a boy.  One of my friends offered me a quarter for it.  I didn't have any particular affection for it, but it filled in until I got better equipment.  I had a nice old Boker than my Grandfather gave me, but my Dad nabbed it.  He had given it to Gramps and took it as an insult that the old man just gave it away.  Best wishes.

Yesterday the weather was so nice, my kids and I were out and the 7 year old wanted to practice his knife skills. So he used his Camper to saw a small log and made some notches and stakes. I brought out the daypacker blade to do some heavy lifting and carve the ends of his weapon into “blades”. Good times.

Yeah its short in length and depth, I really like a deeper blade to do prep work. The old line cook in me.  My Opi No. 9 will be fun to put to the test.

Day 13; no use.

I have normally avoided the import Taylor/S&W Schrades because of low quality, but the 44OT is passable. Previous models I had were bought to compare with NY-made examples I already had, and they were rife with QC problems. This one needs thinner edges, and the edge retention isn't as good as Schrade+ or even 1095. It's the first I managed to keep.

Perhaps not so strange when you consider that the P38 was designed and built for the single purpose of opening cans, while the SAK openers in general and combo tools in particular are a compromise of sorts, providing multiple functions but not necessarily being the best at any of them.

Feels weird that, last night, AFTER I posted that I actually needed my knife. I cut the elastic laces out of a pair of USGI combat boots that I bought as surplus cheap locally (and had shortly tried Lock Laces in--which they don't work on boots), and decided to use the little plastic tip on my Myerchin Crew's lanyard.

Day 15

Went to my local knife store to buy storage cases, and noticed some beater knives from a collection that were being sold as lots for $20-60 depending on the quality of the knives. There's also some nice USA Schrades (including a Cut Co) that I'm getting soon too. This one was the most expensive one at $60--but I have long wanted a Loomfixer, Case Barlow, and more old Remingtons.

In this lot was a Remington Granddaddy Barlow, Case Loomfixer, Case 47 stockman (needs a new backspring for the spey/coping blades--getting sent off to Case soon), and a Case Barlow (got misplaced before photos were taken).

The Loomfixer is still sharp, and has extremely strong springs. Barlow, similar--although the edges need work.  Both of these will be EDCs--47 will be as well once warranty's done. The Remington is just a relic to look at (and almost all my really old ones are junkers).

Also showed off my GAK--and got the clerk wanting one.  I think I'm now becoming an enabler.

Trooper came along on a trip to the laundromat.  Stopped by Food Lion first to buy some suds.  That's detergent, not beer.  I looked at the Tide, but would have needed to take out a loan to buy.  The machines here still use quarters instead of those little credit card things.  That means you need several pounds of them to wash something.  The grandmother in the photo stopped me to make sure I knew which seat she wanted to sit in.  I said take any she liked.  The old dear loaded her stuff and then went to another spot to sit.  I thought about telling her that she wasn't in the chair she had reserved, but decided not to be a contrarian.  Her elderly daughter whipped out her cell-fornicator and yop, yop, yopped while her poor mother staggered around and did the laundry.  I learned all about the strange car that had parked in her driveway at 3AM.  Waiting for someone to do a drug deal she thought.  I finished my newspaper and gave it to mother.  Trooper didn't really do anything.  Just sat there and held his olive drab hands over his nylon ears.  I made that part up.  Best wishes.  Gary

Then a stop at Sportsman Warehouse and found two storage trays.  $8, they make great totes for storing my pocket knives!  I needed a new one for my multiplying family of Opinels 🙄

I started to open another bag of oats for breakfast.  Then I saw the latest chemical outrage perpetrated on the public concerning oatmeal contaminated with chlormequat.  I wasn't very hungry anyway.  Might make do with some toast and drive out for a box of Pop Tarts later.  Don't bother telling me about jelly filled toaster pastry issues.  I won't even listen.
I didn't put out any snax for the fur-bearing types last night.  A coyote screamed me awake yesterday morning from the bushes nearest my bed, so I worried about baiting up a four-legged meal for the wild canid.

Several members with snow, and one out mowing his lawn.  It is 26F (-3C) here, so there might be snow outside.  No way I'm going to totter outside all bleary eyed and bare footed with a flashlight to check.   If there's snow, then there's snow.  It will wait until the sun comes up.
I have been keeping my lawn mower battery charged up through the winter.  Maybe I won't have to buy a new one.  I took a photo of Trooper at the steering wheel of my Cub.  I keep a box over the seat.  I was seeing raccoon tracks on the seat, so SOMETHING was climbing up on the seat at night.  I wonder if they put their front paws up on the wheel and made little zoomy mouth noises like a motor running?
     Best wishes.  G

Day 18

The GAK with his Spanish cousin, and their creepy inbred child.

The Aitor is fairly nice. Good snap, came sharp out of the box. Definitely a great alternative if you prefer the serrated blade to the saw (or just want something similar for less).

The Mil-Tec is pretty rough. No snap, and the joints rub something fierce. Might try lubing them up. It's a shame, if Vic (or Aitor) made a quality version of this thing, you'd have a real nice knife.

PE Blade
Saw
Serrated blade (we used to call them rope saws, since they mostly got used on the old sisal and manila ropes)
File
Two screwdrivers: The combo tool is passable, and the iffy rounded tip on the Aitor did fit the flat head on the switch plate I grabbed to test it. I'd much rather the big flat head/prybar on one and a smaller tip on the other like most SAKs
Hex wrenches
Can opener
Bottle opener
Not sure how I feel about that wire stripper. It's probably fine, shouldn't be prying with the blade anyway.

Aitor only puts on a CS or a Phillips, but with 3 layers I wonder if you couldn't get both and the awl. Finally bringing piece to the warring Spartan and Tinker factions. If not, I'd take a hook or tech driver or something...

Prefer the Vic hole to the keyring on a knife this size.

You'd have to carry a 58 or a 74 for scissors, but you'd have more functions in a 3 layer knife than most of the 4s.

I remember seeing a red handled Aitor at a flea market years ago.  I asked the vendor what it was.  He said, "Oh, its Spanish made."  He said it with such lack of enthusiasm and didn't offer to hand it to me, so I just went on about my business.  I never even asked how much it was.  From then on, when I saw the Aitor markings on the side, I just ignored the knives and kept looking.
A friend used to sell Degen knives.  He gave me and my Dad one each for Christmas.  It was very inexpensive looking, but had nice sharp blades.  Solingen.  Maybe Richartz?  I didn't think anything of it and gave mine to Dad.  He swapped them both off.  As usual.  They looked like a KampKing sort of knife.  I saw the Degen name in a catalog.  I don't think my knife had any tang stamp at all except Solingen.
Too bad the Mil-Tec knives are not higher quality.  I agree that they could be desirable if the manufacture was better.  I wish I had looked at the Aitor knives years ago.  Best wishes.  G

Trooper on a page from an old dealer's outdoor catalog.  1989, I think.  The only SAKs that they carried were Precise (Wenger).  Retail was rather high even then.  The other side of the page is some off-brand called Spiders-R-Us or something.  They look a little familiar for some reason....?
I was shocked when I looked through the Buck prices in this old rag.  Also real US made Uncle Henry Kings Ranch big stockman cost a little over $16 dealer.  I always wanted one and never got one.  This supplier was a good one to deal with.  Shipped quickly and didn't torment you with continual backorders.  Best wishes.  G

I have a TRAVELER still in the clamshell!

Yep, Wenger was right there battling Victorinox, Novato g the SAK designs. And when Wenger begin to suffer, Victorinox, swooped in and bought them, and melted operations together with first interest to protect jobs and grow the SAK market.

There was a saw blade and a sort of odd shaped sheep foot blade instead of an awl on the Remington scout/utility knife along with the usual KampKing type tools.
Maybe one reason my pal wasn't too pleased with his Upland knife was because it was so ugly.  Clunky Delrin handles were a funky color and felt greasy and cheap.  It was also bigger and bulkier than I thought it was going to be.  I didn't like it.  Best wishes.  Gary

Trooper can opener.  Making that first plunge into the can isn't easy.  The combo screwdriver, can opener, bottle opener, stripper, saw/finger mauler tip is rather blunt.  It will probably poke a hole through to start the cut before the sharp hook rips through the rim underside.  Nothing new.  I have done this a bunch of times before this.
I might post a critter photo later.  Depending on whether or not the furry things could eat the truly iggy mashed potatoes that I left for them.  Simulated desiccated potato filings from a box.  Ick.  Best wishes.  Gary

Day 21

My wife ordered a globe light from Etsy months ago and it just showed up in a battered and poorly packed box. Something was rattling around inside and through the bottom hole I saw it was the bulb and some wiring. Very disappointing for the money. After some failed communication to the seller I decided it was hopeless and time to hack the thing and fix it. So the top had to pop off, which was fixed with some type of permanent adhesive. After rewiring, the darn thing did not work. Either a bad bulb, cord, or connector. The hawksbill helped me trim off the glue and whatnot. It ended up getting stuck on the end of a christmas light string to illuminate it. [ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

Trooper on a weedwacker.  A man gave me the thing.  He was getting ready to put it in a dumpster.  Said it needed a fuel line.  He was right.  It will crank but not draw fuel.  I put it to work outside my locked tool shed.  I use it for a decoy.  If anyone wants to steal something and is a little nervous about sticking around, they can just grab the weed eater and make their getaway.
I saw my friend Drew a while back.  His brother-in-law lives next door and showed up at Drew's steaming mad.  Someone had broken in to his tool storage and taken his chainsaw.  It occurred to my friend that maybe he had better check his own tools.  Sure enough, his new Husqvarna was gone.  In its place was his next-door neighbor's chainsaw.  The thief had taken the other first and decided that Drew's was better.  At least Drew can borrow his brother-in-law's saw if he needs one.  Best wishes.  G

If anyone is tired of back-yard pet photos, take heart.  The challenge is almost over and the pix will go away.  Last night's menu was bread smeared with Italian sausage grease.  Yummers.  The early possum and a raccoon got all the bread.  Late comer skunk had to lick the plate.  In the video you could see his (her?) little tongue going wick, wick, wick.  Best wishes.  G

G I really like the idea of a decoy broken tool for a quick thief. I may have to procure something from my hoarder neighbor.

I already knew I like the hawksbill shape before this challenge, but it has been repeatedly showing how it has an edge on other blade shapes for various activities. I will certainly be seeking a traditional with HB.   [ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

The decoy puzzles me Gary?

You are so FAR from main road,  why would they explore up onto your property.

Shucks you could, take em out and bury them deep in the woods and no one the wiser.

Trooper lying on the ground.  That should demonstrate the problems of a olive drab colored pocket knife outdoors.  Drop it (especially in rough terrain) and it is very difficult to find.  If you don't know exactly where it left your company, you might be out of a knife.  That's why I used to tie the Trooper with a boot lace to my pants when I used it outdoors.  Extra boot lace is handy by itself, actually.  Best wishes.  G

Temps are back down below freezing again.  Feels froozy after a brief unseasonable warm-up.  Critters had to leave with a tear in their wee little eyes.  I didn't put out any snacks last night.  They all seem fat and sassy anyway.  I imagine that they have a regular paper route that they run.  One house after another.  Eat leftover cat food at house A, snoop around house B looking for scraps, riffle through the trash can at house C.  Stop by IMR's.  Feel around in the little creek there.  Climb up on IMR's Cub tractor with their muddy paws.  A racko version of a practical joke.  See if he left anything edible outside.  Walk up on his front porch and make big stompy rackets.  The usual.
Might as well post a Trooper photo.  We are in the last week of this show.  After that I can go back to carrying my usual SAK.  That would be..... wait a minute..... I was carrying the same Trooper every day already?  Hmmm?  Best wishes.  Gary

It's good to see you got caught up on your posts, Nate.  I placed a camera on a fairly well traveled game trail.  Might take it down later today.  Could be some critter pix?  You never know what is going to show up.  I was listening to a high school baseball game on the radio.  The ball field is less than a half mile from my house, but I wasn't in the mood to sit in the stands.  When I took down the camera, I found a video of four people strolling along through the woods.  Must have come right by my house.  I never knew it.  Probably got bored with the baseball game and went walkabout.  High school kids.  They didn't bother a thing.  Never knew they were on camera.  Best wishes.  G

Trooper overlooking the river.  There is enough room to park behind my mailbox and people often do.  I don't mind.
The river has a Cherokee name that means 'cornbread'.  I guess the Cherokees made cornbread.  I know they grew corn down in the river bottoms.  They also made bean bread and still do.  I never made any.  I don't have anything that would grind beans.  You can buy corn meal, but I never saw bean meal in the stores here.
This challenge has just about played out.  I use a pocket knife a lot more in the spring and summer.  This time of year, not so much.  Best wishes.  G

Yesterday it was in the 80s and today it is in the 20s. We always have wild weather but this has been particularly unseasonable. Last night I used the clip point blade to prep some things on the cutting board.   [ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

Day 22.

Sorry for my absence. Long story short, I was using a chatbot site that also had a "gallery" feature, and moderation seemed to be lacking--big time.  I was pretty upset (and worried) over certain content that, by my interpretation of the rules, was wrong. I'd report the stuff en masse only to get emails that I was abusing the reporting system.  I finally just decided to let it go and dump the site--I have a strong sense of values, morals, and ethics. They don't.

I used the GAK's blade this morning to open sheep feed. Bought the Breyer horse Monday during my last feed run (as I usually tend to wait until all toys are 50% off at TSC before buying the exclusives--but I'd been buying feed mostly through Southern States lately--so I waited about a month too late). Breyer had three or four traditional (plus several smaller horse sets) that were exclusive to Tractor Supply this year; and while I wanted the Belgian, this one is still pretty nice.

Day 30

30 days already, most enjoyable gone quickly. Many thanks to Enginears for hosting and to everyone for their wit, wisdom and pictures

I mainly used the 108mm GAK which I’ve only carried a few times previously so good to give it an outing

It feels great in the hand, the textured scales should be more common, it’s a good width at 2 layers and always felt comfortable in use.

The bottle opener was a revelation, best on any SAK IMO, great leverage. The blade’s a good size for a lot of jobs but the saw with cover is a bit cumbersome. Didn’t use the awl or corkscrew but am sure work as well as any backside SAK tools

The other knives were more just along for the ride. The floral knife is just a little too small for kitchen jobs but fine in its proper role and as an edc for box opening or whatever. I do like the nylon scales a lot

The Mod 1908’s are lovely of course but even when I hosted the vintage SAK challenge, didn’t really use them. They’re from a time and place, they could still be used but modern knives are unsurprisingly better suited to now, and those back springs are absolute killers

Thanks again awl :hatsoff:

Another Trooper photo.  Having fun climbing on some old traps.  I lived near an old man who had an interesting way to squirrel hunt.  The furry imps would climb around in the dogwood trees beside his house.  He would set a Victor trap around the base of a tree and settle up with his squirrel dinner by using a stick.  Not really sporting.  Or legal.  It was very efficient, however.
Cooking squirrels and having a nice dinner with squirrel gravy and biscuits has faded into the past.  The new generation either thinks they are cute or possibly rats.  There might be a woman in the county who would make squirrel gravy and biscuits, but I don't know who that would be.  I doubt there is a one who would abide by the old time rules.  Man comes home with several tree climbers.  Slings them over into the kitchen sink without a word and goes on about his business.  Expecting a squirrel dinner.  Mother gets to skin the things and dispose of un-necessary internal working parts.  And all the loose hair that got all over and inside everything. A fish dinner used to be approached in the same manner.  Sling the stringer in the sink.  Let Ma take over.  She might even say, "Oh good.  Some nice trout."  Some others would say, "If you expect to eat these things, you got to clean 'em first."  Pa would stick out his lower lip a little and grumble, but would do as he was told.  Don't even think about doing it now, fellas.  Best wishes.  G

Well Gary, your post brought back memories of my experiences.    My mom would not clean any game brought into our house.   She would cook and serve it, but not clean it.   In fact the rule was - You caught it or killed it, you clean it!

Started going out hunting with my dad when about 8, then  hunting at 10 with a 20GA single shot, then by myself  at 12.   Ice fishing after Christmas when about 8 or 9 and bass / blue gill  on & after Memorial Day each summer.

We have a walk out basement, and you never dared to bring your prize through the breezeway and down the steps, only through the basement door.  Only exception was ice fishing, 5 gallon pails of frozen fish were OK as the snow drifts were usually 3 feet or higher.

The time frame was early 60s, and I moved away in ‘71.

My grandmothers were a different breed.  Hunt in low lands,  bring in a few rabbits, my paternal grand would come out with knife in hand and help skin and clean, and only ask for one rabbit, but I always gave her two😉.  Same when I would go fishing with gramps, he smoke his cigar and watch me scale, clean and bag the blue gills, she always helped bag. And I would give them the whole mess normally.
My maternal grandmother the same, except they lived in city limits by way of expansion.  But she learned I was sniping Ground hogs (woodchucks) in the hay field or pastures she asked me to bring her one and she would gut it and clean it.  That first summer, she got one every couple weeks.  The smile she would have, priceless.

Here is picture of the first knife I bought when 8 yo. A trapper.
[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

Prepped many a rabbit, scores of fish until I got a 6”  Rapala filet knife.

The GOOD OLD DAYS! 😜

That's how it worked, Gordon.  I don't think there was anything harder than making up your mind in front of a display of Sabre knives.  All knives were one price, so the only question was which one you wanted.  All too hard for me, so I wouldn't buy anything at all.  Plus, my Dad wouldn't have let me.  That's how I came to carry a Kutmaster for so long.  It was carry what you have and make the best of it.  Best wishes.  G

I snuck down to the Suburban Drug, about 5 miles away on my bike early one morning, when my neighbors all had chores on a hot summer morning.
I had already selected this trapper, just for blade styles and length. Did not ask permission!  And then covered my trek by visiting my grand parents on return trip, helped grand pa put tomato’s on the roadside stand and let grandma prepare cookies and coffee milk for morning break before returning home. No one the wiser and the knife was kept out of site till hunting season.   Still had my Cub Scout knife for hay bailing  duties. ☺️

My dad had one knife in his pocket always, a Shrade Sheldon Muskrat, a lifetime.  Plus, a ZIPPO, that had been repaired more times than I have fingers.

DAY 30

My last day with my only two SAKs that qualified for this challenge.
I started with the Day  Packet,  freeing from its package on day 1, and putting through its paces, and used for a whittling project, finding it could handle the task.

Then in early February, temptation bit me. Observing a Sheepfoot blade model being used,  encourage my need for another such tool.

It permitted me to continue the challenge utilizing a blade style I incorporate often in my work style knives.

Bothe blades worked well and one item I did not expect, was how well these blades held their SHARPNESS.  Unlike the typical Victorinox blade which dulls suddenly during use these two blades never faded.   In fact, with an occasional stropping these blades were not sharpened during the challenge.

I must give credit to the CHISEL GRIND EDGE that is utilized.

Most impressed.

IMHO, these blades intended for floral shops, would be great tools in that environment.  I worked in green houses in my teen years, and yes I could see myself trimming potted plants before shipment,  cutting flower stems for bouquets, etc.

It is just that the blades are a tad short for my normal usage and the blades a tad thin, yet the handles are perfect for my XXL size hands.

Enjoyed, the month, actually not expecting to complete, but the 2nd blade filled any void I anticipated 🌹

Some great stories about old knives and grandparents today. My grandpa hunted and fished, and I went with him occasionally (mostly on the latter) but I couldn't tell you what kind of knife he carried. Probably whatever beater Sears was selling, which I guess would've been rebadged Schrades at the time.

Day 23:

I honestly think this is the first challenge I've ever done here where it was Leap Day.

I finally decided to start sorting through my Granddad's sockets, and getting complete sets mounted to rails. Used the GAK to cut the backer cards off the rails, and the awl to clean out my nails (as some of those sockets were just plain caked in grease and dirt before I cleaned them).

Came across a "10-piece" Proto hex bit socket set (3/8 and 1/2" drive) only to find two sockets were missing.  Got out my Proto catalog and looked them up--only to find my old go-to for industrial brands, Fastenal, stopped selling to the general public as our local store was considered to be in too small of a market to retain its regular store (although if I order online, I can pick up there) Applied Industrial also has a local branch, and since I'm also buying the Williams ratcheting screwdriver (a rebadged Snap-On at half the price), I might as well get those sockets too. I'll call them in the morning--seems more and more supply houses won't sell to regular consumers--you have to be a sizeable business--I can't just slap down the farm name on the account and call it a business account (even though I do with State Electric--they allowed me to get a customer number without being a business).

Day 30

The Safari opened this package of mini M&Ms for my youngest daughter.

Overall, I’ve enjoyed carrying the Safari for a month.

I really appreciated the larger, textured handles and the additional blade length (vs. a 91 mm SAK).  It also carried well in the pocket in spite of being 4 1/4” long, probably because of its slim two-layer design.

However, I don’t foresee it becoming a regular carry for me.

For one thing, the tool set is quite limited in comparison with many three- or four-layer 91 mm options.

For another, I’m not sure I like the combo tool.  Having the saw as part of the tool makes using any of the other functions more dangerous.  Vic recognized this and provided a cover for the saw, but it seems to be the part that is frequently lost or discarded, especially on used knives.  The bottle opener works fine,.  However, while I didn’t have a chance to try the can opener function during this challenge, I haven’t heard much good about it other than it will eventually get a can open.

As a screwdriver, it falls victim to the same issues that beset the 91 mm combo tool: too small/not stout enough for some tasks, too big for others.

I also didn’t use the saw, but have to think this “pull-only” design would be less efficient than one of the other saws designed to cut on both the push and pull strokes.

Thanks for a fun challenge, all!

Title: Re: Versailles To Serengeti…100/108mm challenge!
Post by: IMR4198 on March 01, 2024, 01:10:34 PM
Well, it's wrap up day for the challenge.  I think by now that most of you would know that I have carried the same 108mm for 40+ years.  So a 30 day challenge is just business as usual. Any tool has weaknesses and strong points.  Some of each.
Scales:  Maybe the best outdoor design that Vic has made for a folder.  Light.  Durable.  The checkering makes it less slippery when wet.  Or bloody.  Mine has been in both.  Hunting.  The lanyard hole is great.  Not flippy and doesn't get fouled in stuff like a ring.  Or a bail.  No reason for the color to be olive drab.  Bright is better.
Blade:  Usual Vic steel.  Cuts okay.  Sharpens okay.  Hard to rust.  Length is a plus.
Other blade:  Screwdriver works for fasteners that aren't super tight.  Saw makes using it for a driver dangerous.  Choking up on the shaft doesn't really make it safer.  Probably worse.  The saw is great.  The best saw on a Vic knife.  Combo is okay for stripping wire.  The cap lifter works great.  The can opening function is poor.  Good enough for occasional or emergency use.
Back tools.  Corkscrew works well.  Stout and longer than the usual Vic type.  Awl is very good.  Good for boring holes or reaming out holes that are too small.  No sewing eye.  I never really missed not having a sewing eye, but it could be a good addition anyway.  Good for punching holes in thin metal, like a can.  Open the awl, than whack the top of the knife with your fist.  Tip is sharp.  Some 91mm awls are rounded a little at the tip.
Easy to maintain.  Flip open both top tools and you have complete access to the insides.  Wash it out.  Easy to dry also.  No tools on the other end to hinder ability to wipe it out.  Or blow it out.
Should have beens:  Should have been a more easily seen color.  If an adversary or game animal can see your brightly colored knife, it will have long before noticed your 6 foot height, movement, talking, scent, or sounds.  A clip point main blade would have been my personal preference.  Both front tools could have had liner locks.  Safer all around.  Especially with that saw.  I bought mine new in the box without a saw guard.  Don't ask me why it never had one.  The saw with the little file surface was a useful thing.  Mine didn't have that either.
I think that's a wrap.  My 108 scales are being held together with glue at this point.  The blades and back tools are all still tight.  The blade is a little thinner that it was new.  The saw is a little duller, but still works great.  The awl has been sharpened several times through the years.  The knife is a little bulky to carry, but isn't very heavy for its size and the rounded ends make it more pocket friendly.  All in all, it has been a good companion for me.  Best wishes.  Gary (IMR)

Day 30

It was an absolute pleasure to share the challenge with each of you. A lot of great photos, stories, and info.

As is probably apparent by now: I am a 100mm fan.  :climber:
I think the harder steel and chisel grind makes these babies work horses. Throughout the month I think it was a very close race between my favorite blade shape, each has their own forte. I can’t help but marvel at the control I have with these longer handles and the tip of the pruner or sheepsfoot. Easy to use, easy to clean.

The stories about grandfathers tools had me revisiting memories of my grandpa explaining that he rode a horse and carried a rifle to school. Pictured is the Case hunting knife I got after him and my father passed. It has skinned many squirrels and rabbits that were shot on his way home. In his later years he was a radio operator and opted to carry the newer Buck 309. A very strong memory of him is at Christmas he would pull out this Buck and carefully snap open a blade and go about cutting the tape on the present. I remember asking him once why he didn’t use a finger nail clipper as he cut his nail with the Buck and he said this did just fine. I can’t say I cut my nails with a Buck (sak scissors) but I do like to carefully open packages with a blade as he did.

I am trying very hard not to order myself 4-5 Opinels  :ahhh but here is the No 9 I am starting with. After a few tests I opted to mod just a tad for my hand.   [ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

I would be fine with that badge, actually.  However I have seen it before.  Also, it would disqualify the 100mm users since many of those knives were not pre-1986 manufacture.  My understanding is that Comis had made a new badge for this challenge.  Best wishes.  G

You are most likely 100% correct.
When I looked yesterday I thought I would need to apply for the ‘single layer SAK’ badge.

Unless a specific badge will be made available for this challenge, I think it depends on which knives you used to decide which of the existing badges you may claim?

If you used only pre 1986 SAKs: Vintage SAK challenge badge
If you used only 108mm but not sure if they're all pre-1986: Discontinued SAK challenge badge
If you only used 100mm Soldier: Soldier Challenge badge

And if all else failes: they're all Swiss, so the Country of Origin Challenge badge may also apply?

I think I will wait and see what develops.  Until Enginears makes a clarification anyway.  I have a Country of Origin badge already, but would be happy with one of the others.  There was sort of a general agreement in the Country of Origin that we wouldn't use Swiss knives and in fact nobody did.  It wasn't put in the requirements for a badge however.  Best wishes.  G

   All.
The new badge looks great. Comis has done a bang up job, I hope you all like adding it to your sashes.

I hear (see) what you are indicating Glen, just looking for what Enginears reported. 😎😄

Hang tight friends, there will be a specific 100/108 30 day badge coming soon to the available badges. I will update once I hear word and we can request it.

Day 30

Crossover day! Opted to carry my smallest Opi (No4) since I have the larger SAK today. I'll step up to a larger Opinel tomorrow (and maybe put an SAK back on the keychain, haven't made up my mind yet).

I think my thoughts largely match Gary's on the 108mm platform. Scales are grippy and durable, blade size is great, SAWmbo tool is surprisingly capable. When I did the colored alox challenge last year, I commented that I feel like the 93mm platform is kind of awkwardly in middle. They're tougher than the 91s, but still still a little on the small side, and don't have the same tool assortment. I think the 108s are hitting more the niche that I want them to, and it's a shame Vic never did more with the platform. They've still got the thicker steel, and (while not as tough as alox) tougher scales at least, but the basic GAK has more tools than most of the 93mm range and a little extra blade length.

It's a shame we'll never get an 3 layer with the Aitor combo tool, or (really dreaming now...) a four layer with scissors. Part of me wonders if it'd be possible to mod in the Aitor combo. Maybe someday...

Happy riding along with all of you, especially Engi for hosting (especially after we made you move it 12 times). Lots of fun challenges happening in March, excited to see what people have to show off.

First off  :salute: to all those who participated in this fun Challenge.  What a great way to highlight a SAK that might not get the love it deserves.  A big thank you to Enginears for hosting this Challenge and to all those who joined in and followed along.

comis is our resident badge maker so a huge Thank you to him for responding to Enginears request for this badge.  He did a great job and it will go live just as soon as possible.  comis is wonderfully generous with his time and I for am grateful to him.

Enginears will as he said follow up with when the badge goes live I just wanted to pop in and say  :hatsoff: to you all.

Do you use the knife regularly or just have it as part of a collection?

Як по-мені, то у чоловіка має бути декілька ножів;)

In my opinion, a man should have several knives;)
