I have such an urge to start getting into cigars more seriously. I only get them when someone goes to Cuba and brings some back for me, but I enjoy them, and they don't last long enough. They are sooo bloody expensive here though.
Does anyone buy them online?

Thompson Cigar. I am very happy with them...I usually buy samplers so I can get decent cigars at intro cost. :tu:

That's the first thing I thought! I found a couple of online places that do ship to Canada, but they seem to be running about triple the price compared to Thompson and CI.That's sweet looking Terry!!

I guess that's what y'all get for being able to buy Cubans. I wonder if Canada started an embargo on Cuba, would they be able to get other cigars at a 'normal' price.

I was a pipe smoker and didn't like cigars that much. I have a big box that I bought in Amsterdam during 2003 and it is still 2/3 full. I tried some from time to time though.I started into pipes, never really got far but I did try that captain black.. JR
But I like pipe tobacco like aromatic cigars and I used to smoke Backwoods and Captain Black, usually during holidays and leisure time. Now you opened my appettite to try them again.

Man, Stealth, I just need to send you like $100-$200 a month and have you send me some random sticks you enjoy lol. I got stuck in a rut there for quite a while, and I am ashamed to say that I don't smoke much variety now. It just seems that with paid reviews and BS marketing I'm hesitant to branch out beyond Padron, Tatuaje, LP, and Fuente. I know there is a whole world out there that I am missing out on, and it stings a bit.
What city and shop you work in Stealth? Might have to stop by when I get back to Texas and have you give me some suggestions.
Smoking a Flor de Filipinas 1898 Independencia. It's alright, definitely nothing to write home about though. I've let it sit since November and that has definitely helped with the flavor. It doesn't have the green flavor it had before, but now it has considerably more pepper which I'm not a fan of. I'm wondering if the green wasn't masking the pepper before. Smoke doesn't have any texture in the mouth really and it hardly smokes at all when it's lit.

That would really suck paying for Cubans and not getting them though!!
I don't think we're going to Cuba next year as we're going with friends, and one of them only has her US passport so she doesn't want to risk it. We've only been after her for 3 years to get her UK one. We will be going to the DR though, so I'll have to check out what they have.
That is it! Next trip into town I'm picking up a treat. Hope you are all happy. :PYes, yes we are. Now you better enjoy it. And get some beer to go with it while your at it.

SAK GUy, C.I. seems to have a large selection.
http://www.cigarsinternational.com/search/?q=upmann
However, I know that my locals have H. Uppman on hand, also. Total Wine in your area?
Cubans can be bought over the border in Mexico, or Canada. Never had the desire. Years back, I worked at a hotel, and a nice guest gave me a Cuban Cohiba in a glass tube. Very tasty, but no more so than any typical quality smoke from anywhere else.
I'll tell you what chaps my hide, right here in Phoenix. I'm a mere hundred miles or so from Mexico, and no one in-town seems to carry Te Amo! When I lived in Florida 20yrs ago, that was one of my faves, LOL.

Someone came into the shop earlier and talked about Undercrown Pigs. Interesting
Well I had a call from the wife a few minutes ago, "what's this priority mail USPS box that has arrived for you?", Open it I asked her, "Cigars" she snorted dismissively. Could you please put them in the humidor for me my dear?

Gurkha Beast today.
On a related note, while it is too large to comfortably carry while out and about, this (http://www.bernzomatic.com/item.html?id=19) has become my go-to cigar lighter at home. I like it for cigars for many of the same reasons I like it for fireworks: hot flame/quick lighting, highly wind resistant, massive fuel capacity (relative to most handheld lighters), excellent reliability, and large flame-to-finger distance.
OH yes, I've been wanting one of those for awhile. Not for cigar lighting mind you, bit it sure as hell would do a good job at it. :DGurkha Beast today.

Great sticks this afternoon Terry! That Cain F sounds like a really good one.
We're doing an event at the shop today with Southern Draw. It's a company based out of Austin, Tx. This is their Firethorn Toro
The Firethorn was very good to me. It's a Habano Rosado wrapper and all Nicaraguan tobacco aged 4-6 years
I liked smoking cigars but after I stoped smoking I hardly smoke it anymore, but I do love the smell and there are probably nothing more satisfying than the smell from gun powder and cigars.

Stealth, I am a BIG DE fan, with UC, Muwat, Nica Rustica, Papas Fritas all being quite tasty. However, I have at least a two-stick rule before signing-off on something for my taste. I've now had my 2nd KFC. Now, I KNOW this may sound anathema to you...but...
If you like the KFC, get hold of the simply dry-cured Parodi or Di Nobili.
It's damn near the same taste experience w/o the DE 'cost' experience, LOL.
I've yet to try Herrera Esteli, or Norteno, but will. I think I will pass on the Isla Del Sol, simply because everyone says it's a mild-bodied stick.
Had my first, run-of-the-mill Padron today, a maduro panatela. I think I am in love with this w/o the need for a 2nd-try, LOL.

Another Añejo this evening with the chiminea. Now that I think of it we are all smoking Añejos this evening so I snapped the second pic. I've only really "had one" with someone else was with a friend, to sit back on the porch and have a drink and just BS the night away! Nope not rare or new. My auto correcting keyboard corrected the B to Bee. So it should read King B. The Queen B is better than the King B to me, both are good though. These retail at or shop for around $7 or $8 a piece.

Wow and hey, anyone like saving the cigar bands? Cool artwork!
Cigar manufacturers have a department that does nothing but artwork and branding stuff. They get pretty elaborate with this.
We have bar tables at the cigar club that have cigar bands under the glass. Next time I'm there, I'll try to remember to take a pic or two.
Nice sticks Terry. You ever tried those Cain Ligeros?

Is it still possible to put them in a humid environment in order to recover them?

Those are fine cigars JR. I wish you could enjoy one! :( That CAO MX2 was a double wrapper maduro and it was pretty stout. Thanks, haven't had me one for going on 4yrs, just sucks.
I find that cigars that do not need humidification are better for the beach, so here is part of my summer selection.
The guantanamera are my favourites, from this lot, but the King Edward, thicker ones, are also good.

Too bad. Some of those inexpensive ones try to go all out and end up overpowering your palate. Then some are just like smoking a rolled up tube of cardboard....I've some 3 dollar ones fall into this category.
Had a Drew Estates MUWAT Kentucky Fire last night, not bad at all for 8$
Especially for not being flavored

But I'd it's a just the right blend of kick vs spice vs flavor. If that makes sense? I'm a newbie in the world of cigar terms.
It's definetly one of the better cigars I've had out of the 20 or so....
Does anyone collect their wrappers? I thought about it but it's kinda too late for a full collection.
Does anyone collect their wrappers? I thought about it but it's kinda too late for a full collection.
Now this Is quality information!!!Does anyone collect their wrappers? I thought about it but it's kinda too late for a full collection.
Bands, you mean. Wrappers are the outer leaves the cigar is made with. The inside is binder and filler.
Yeah, at one point I had a nice collection of bands. And it bears saying, leaving a band on the cigar when you smoke marks you as either a hopeless dopey n00b or a yuppie-in-training. Don't do that!
Is it true that letting the ashes grow, changes the flavor of the cigar?
I would assume the ash effects the burn, the whole air, fuel, heat, and fire correlation thing.
I read the heating the cigar band tip in Cigar Aficionado about 10 years ago.
My old smoking buddies always said "ash longer than an inch means you're getting lucky tonight". I try to see how long the ash will get.
Yeah, I gotta go with Sak Guy on this one. I always leave the band on until the heat has loosened up the adhesive. If you haven't experienced a torn wrapper while removing the bands then you haven't tried many CC's, Fuentes, Ligas, Tatuajes, Padron's, or Tabacalera's. All of those, but especially the Liga and Fuente, are known for using too much adhesive and having it stick to the cigar.
Yes, ash does change the flavor of the stick because it changes the heat dissipation in the stick. Of course the ash is not always indicative of the quality of the cigar as it is directly influenced by the RH it was stored at, the ambient RH, heat, light technique, wind, and many many other factors.

Currently enjoying an Acid Kuba Maduro
It's great! It was my first or second cigar ever. Still love it just as much.Currently enjoying an Acid Kuba Maduro
Excellent!! Haven't tried the Maduro.
What's everyone drinking with their cigar?
I'm gonna sound like a typical "college white girl"
But lately a Frappuccino is my favorite.
(I'm not 21 yet, I have other favorite drinks obviously but not publically expressed)
Enjoying a Drew Estate Java Mint. Flavor isn't terrible but the whole thin square shape is throwing it off
Acid Toast tonight.
Pretty okay, too spicy IMO.
Smoking a wonderful Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 Petite Corona. All of them I've smoked seem to have a fairly tight draw but still always enjoy that thick, earthy smoke.
Yall have convinced me to start the cigar habit, and I had a Illusions Rothschilde last week that I really enjoyed, and I have another (can't remember what) waiting fur me tonight.Don't consider it a habit ;)
As a side note, anyone have any experience with cigarinternational's $10 brown bag sampler? Would it be a good way for a beginner smoker who enjoys lots of (food) flavors to discover new cigars?

Consider it a lifestyle!
As far as the sampler, it won't hurt to try.
I say go for it!

Thanks for the response guys, once I get my homemade humidor up and running ill get the samplerand report back.Totally off track. But what is the name/maker of that bit kit?
In the meantime, I finished the other cigar I had. Turns out it was a Tatuaje Tattoo, and I had it while tinkering with the modded Rebar I got in a trade with JBW1. The cigar was ok, not as good as the one I had last week. However im not sure it was conpletly the cigars fault, as I was too busy fiddling about to really enjoy it. Needless to say, thais is the last time I do anything else while I smoke.

Shame you didn't decide to get into cigars a few months ago while I was still in the US. Would have sent you a proper bomb ... err, sampler.

Samplers are usually the shop's way to get rid of stuff they can't sell and you're paying for stuff you wouldn't normally buy.
The best thing to do is hang around smoke shops and just talk with people. There are hundreds if not thousands of brands and most of them are a waste of money. Not that there aren't many good brands, there are, but the majority are just not very good.
If you don't get a chance to smoke good cigars you won't notice. But if you spend a few years trying people's recommendations and learn what you like you will be able to tell the difference. And there is a difference.
In the category of premium hand rolled cigars the main influence on taste is the ring gauge (circumference) and type of wrapper. The larger ring gauges smoke cooler and are more flavorful because of the increased volume of smoke. I would recommend not wasting time on anything smaller than a 42 ring gauge. The wrapper is what you taste and is a big factor in enjoyment. If you don't like the wrapper even the best made cigar is not going to be enjoyable for you. So try to go with known good brands and try different wrappers (Connecticut shade, sun, Cameroon, Maduro etc.) and see which you prefer. The darker (and sometimes uglier) the wrapper the more flavor. Everybody develops their own preferences so it helps to try a good number of brands, but you should make sure you try good brands rather than just whatever they want to sell or dump on people that week.
Still one of my favorite smokes.

Might sound like heresy to some but I really find Cuban's to be overrated.
Not all Cubans are the same. You need to know what you are buying, from a casa habano shop, and get properly matured cigars or mature them yourself. I have some that i have been maturing for decades. Cohiba should be good to smoke from the shop.
A lot of people have not tried "proper" Cuban cigars.
For a cheap fix guantanamera, that do not need a humidor, if properly stored, are nice. A lot nicer than they were a decade ago, a definite improvement.
I doubt Casa del Habano will sell me fake Cubans. Cuban cigars are not forbidden everywhere.

I smoke everything :).
Pipe when fishing (wet hands!), handrolling tobacco at work, pot with my friends, and cigars when I'm outdoors. They needn't be expensive ones.
Edit: almost everything. I don't like filter cigarettes.
I'm not really a smoker, but I do appreciate a good cigar from time to time.

I got a delivery of Non-Cubans.
Some nice, lower cost, intre cigars from the US. LLynn Dominican barber pole, Nicaraguan, Flor De Oliva, a Gurkha Churchill sampler and a Cusano sampler.
Considering that they cost me about 370Euro in total (the cigar cost was only 122, but then you add shipping, and 200 euro for import tax  ), each one is a bit under $5. Not too bad and they make a change from Cubans. To buy these non-Cubans here the cost would be anything from 5 to 15Euro.
I have added some pictures of my 3 larger humidors and the fridgedor I use to store the cigars and the humidors, for anybody interested.

Glenfiddich, these will be great after some years in the humidor.
Smashie, these are reasonably common. The double wrap gives them a strong flavour. They are not ease to produce. You can get them from a few brands. These are from llynn who does not overcharge.
you seem to be in good company, judging by the fact that I am the only one posting in this thread :)I see that.
.I had me one of those looooong ago, I so mis my cohibas or one of two acids, :(

Can't say I ever tried one of them..I had me one of those looooong ago, I so mis my cohibas or one of two acids, :(
JR
I have a 5-pk of Drew Estate Naturals that I need to try..
.
They generally give a stronger flavour, a more tasty, complex cigar. They also make the wrapper stronger. It will depend on the maker.
Try a cheap one. These are OK, but they will need some more humidor time, to smoothen the cigar. They are from llynn, online, his own brand.
..and, they look cool :)
. nice smoking weather
.
Gurkha Ninja, OKish
.
Yes, and the flavour was not there either...
but, I am still smoking it... :D
.
Not bad - getting better with age
Well it's nearly 01.30am on my night shift, so outside in the very fresh air sitting here with my coffee cigar and pst, life's good :D
again
I love my portable cigar stand :)
Plenty left - I like to try new things too. Those were my fav, also liked Acid Blue Kuba Kuba‘s, very sweet! I could sooo go for one right now..
My father No1 -OK, but I just do not see what is the big deal with them - they have better ones from the same factoryYou mean those acid cigars? Yeah there’s other cigars, two of them that I know of taste as if they were dipped in something, and we’re very sweet.
Never tried Acid cigars (or any other type of Acid)Ohh, the flav was only on the end, kinda like it was dipped in sugar, kinda like those wood end thingys, other then that smooth, we’re talking like 6yrs I don’t really remember I think I only had two from acid, Kuba Kuba and one other I don’t remember..
I smoked one flavoured cigar a year ago, which was better than I snobbishly expected...
here is the one I smoked : https://www.thecygarshop.com/product-page/my-father-no-1
Made in the "My Father Factory"
I need to venture out more!
Oh no, I meant to the Break Room Nate! I didn't know that this thread existed . I get most of mine online through Cigars International.
My creative cutter...it works as well as any cutter I've used.
Had an Alec Bradley prensado on Saturday. I generally like their cigars but this was barely OK. It only had their signature flavour profile, a bit, in the last third.
Had a Partagas Serie P No.2 yesterday, my current favourite. Solid.
La Rica serie 2000, burns well, tastes of tobacco, nothing else
Aging Room Quattro Nicaragua Maestro
Reminds me of Onyx cigars, from decades ago.
Decent flavour, sweet, good burn. A lot of tar for an aged cigar.
Not bad but you can get similar flavour for half the cost
Some people rave about those Aging Room cigars, but the ones I've had I thought were only just OK... :dunno:
Maybe I am just not capable to detect certain special flavours in them...
H. UPMANN MAGNUM 46
Good construction and burn, boring flavour, needs some age
...and 3 years later they have developed a very nice, smooth, spicy flavour 'Definitely worth aging and smoking.
Rocky Patel 20th anniversary Lancero.Ultimately, every cigar smoker should enjoy them however they wish. Personally though, I’ve never understood people only smoking a cigar half (or even just a third) of the way, and then discarding the rest. For one thing, it seems like a waste of good tobacco. For another, as you experienced with this one, sometimes the best the part of a cigar is in that second half. I always smoke mine down to the nub, unless I am rudely interrupted.
Not bad, the first half was a bit boring but the second half was tasty and spicy
Gran Habano #3
Gran habano corojo 3
These are from my humidor and have at least 16 years of age on them... Trey used to be really strong but now the strength is gone but the flavour is really good, burn is excellent .
very tasty and smooth
Tried an El Baton and a Rocky Patel 55... both smoked fine but had very little flavour. Definitely not worth the moneyThat’s a shame. Most of the RP stuff I’ve had has been decent.
Alec Bradley, magic toast.Alec Bradley for me today too…
Good, being an AB but a bit plain, especially the first third
During the pandemic I got the habit of smoking 1-2 cigars each afternoon, with my Expresso Corretto or Freddo Latte.Nice setup!
As I have said, I am a long time pipe smoker and not fond of Caribbean cigars. I mainly smoke Backwoods rusticos and Toscanello.
They need no humidor, nor a cigar cutter.
I used to use my Zippo 1986 to 2004 and my Dupont 2004-2011 (both gifts from my darling) but now that I use electronic cigarettes any Bic lighter will do. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220207/593d3a12f1d24ffc2f89b144c231f62c.jpg)

Many restaurants and corner shops do not really know how to look after cigars. My experience has been the same, and I now make it a point not to buy cigars from anyone whose primary business is anything other than selling cigars.
Bad or no humidity control, big temperature variations, bright lights, leaving the humidor's door open, not returning cigars after they go off..
Drew Estate Tabak EspecialYea, I’m not a fan of flavored cigars either. I like my tobacco to taste like tobacco.
I did not realise when ordering that this was an infused cigar.
Weird overly sweet chemical taste, really not my thing, I threw away half of it. Good burn.
More power to those that smoke them but I am not a fan.
I tried an AZ cigar, a low, low end brand that is supposedly long filler and hand made.IMHO, life is too short to smoke crappy cigars my friend.
AZ Special Blend Toro. I know they are cheap, but the burn was bad, the flavour was not there and I just did not like it in any way.
I had an Asylum Schizo Hercule another day and it was again spot-on. Great burn, great flavour, great value.
IMHO, life is too short to smoke crappy cigars my friend.
Glad the Asylum delivered for you though
Somehow I ran across this while perusing the offerings from Knife Center:Ouch, $400 for a cigar cutter!
https://www.knifecenter.com/item/XI303MM/XIKAR-Xi3-Cigar-Cutter-Fossil-Mammoth-Ivory
It sure looks nice, but it's spendy. And I have to wonder if a cigar cutter is even necessary, much less the MTo way. (I smoke cheap cigars that might make some of y'awl wretch and heave, so my knowledge is limited.)
Ouch, $400 for a cigar cutter!Doubtless the mammoth ivory drove up the price. I don't know if such a high premium is justified.
I do enjoy the Knifecentre youtube videos.Me, too. I've watched some from BladeHQ, and stopped when I discovered Knife Center's channel. The guys on BladeHQ's channel try so hard to be entertaining that they annoy me. And their data breach makes me not want to give them my money, anyway.
The whole nub thing baffles me. Why on earth would I (or anyone) want to pay full price for what is basically half a cigar?
Now if their price were proportional to their size, they might be a good short time option. As it is, however, with their price being comparable to full size cigars, one might as well just buy the full size cigars and only smoke half it that is all one has time for.
I am not a regular smoker short on time and in a hurry to get my fix
