Title: SOG Pocket PowerPlier Knock Off
Post by: supratentorial on October 03, 2007, 04:52:59 AM
I spotted this SOG Pocket PowerPlier knock off (bottom left in photo) on ebay.  The description says: "One of the tools has a gear-driven compound action, so there's more compression force on the pliers.  No brand name, but it seems well made."  Although the description says it seems well made... it doesn't look as nice as the ones made by United Cutlery for Stanley and Harley Davidson....  :-\

...or the one made by SOG!   ;D

Sadly enough people buy and use that crap to give everyone a low opinion of multi's in general >:(

Yup.  There are folks out there that use those and figure all multis are the same.  It develops the theory that real multis are overpriced, and then when one of these breaks, people assume they are all garbage.

That's true about everything: cars, cameras, computers, knives, you name it - there are cheap / crappy built ones and you can work your way up from there.

Yeah, I've wondered before... What's with fish scalers? Even another flat (sorry def :D ) would be more useful! Why do so many cheapos choose to put that on their tools? ???

I wonder...has anyone here ever used a SAK or multitool fish scaler to actually scale a fish?

(and if so, would you ever be so foolish to do it again?)  ;)

There probably a lot cheaper to make a fish scaler than a saw ::)

Hehe.

So if nobody uses a fish scaler to scale fish, what the heck good are they? Possibly useful for anything else?

Well the one on the wenger has got a pretty good hook disgorger, but I can't comment on how good or bad it is at de-scaling fish as I'm not a fisherman :)

In that case, do we want to know who or what you had to pull a hook out of? :P

And I didn't even need the Pokey Stick!  You are getting soft mate!

Seriously, I can't remember the last time I went fishing, so I couldn't tell the difference between a good and bad hook disgorger, but I think given the choice, I'd prefer to take one along from a decent manufacturer like SOG, Wenger, Victorinox, Gerber etc before entrusting myself and the well being of the fish to a cheap knockoff.  Of course there are some cheap type designs that are better than others, so it's possible that one of the cheapies would indeed be better than even the good ones.  I'd have to spend an awful lot of time harassing fish before I came to that conclusion though!

Of course, that sounds like fun too....

I use the scaler when I have an itch on my foot and I'm wearing shoes, it's long, thin, and the hook disgorger is good for scratching.  :)
