"Iroka Rostfrei" knife with a massive marlin spike.
My understanding is that this is a German Navy knife but I haven't done much research on it.
Never carried or used it but I'm getting some inspiration from this thread :D(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180108/47c9b9bb54484d9d3dd990c5d96235cb.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180108/7ded690d2af21b199186d31b7c50db97.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180108/6f78f67f0f7b4ea978a14a5ca143fc71.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180108/2b0149657d25ba8479831df4692d0cf7.jpg)

A small and useful marlin spike clasp knife from Sheffield, England. Used to be issued to British forces, though today I don't know. The blade is easy to extract in gloved hands, and without fingernail. The can/bottle opener has a sturdy point. Strong back springs.

Yes it is. It is the standard issue of the German navy (Bundesmarine). They were/are made by a small number of manufacturers. I have one made by Fox Knives of Maniago in Italy.
-
Nice Greenbear! :like: Love to see some pics for the club. I'm really getting into marlinspikes, my grandfather just gave me his old German made Alpha, that I'm going to shine up a little bit this weekend and start carrying

I'll try and find the link I had that listed all the manufacturers, there were only 5 (or maybe 6)
They are all built to the exact same spec and are really very good and robust knives :)

Myerchin Titanium 300s, a 1st gen with partially serrated blade and a 2nd gen with plain edge.
Was on Myerchins website last night "window shopping"!
How do you like it? Been looking at a rigging knife to carry on the boat other than just my Charge. (Worried about rust)

They are amazing little knives. Very capable. So light you forget you are carrying them and both the blade and the spike lock open. On the older knife you depress the bail to unlock the blade or spike and the newer model has frame locks. One word of caution, Myerchin doesn't extend the warranty if you buy their knives second hand. They only cover the original purchaser if purchased from an authorized dealer.

Here's mine - a Fox version. Incidentally these are still available new in Europe :)

Metal Stampings Limited XX. Case (thus the XX) was producing these in a factory in Nova Scotia for the Canadian military from the postwar era into the early 60s. During WWII, their issued knives were Case marked. This is my main use marlinspike. Decided I'd photograph it today while working on some lanyards (for those wondering, I'm using the two internal strands from Harbor Freight glow in the dark rope), in which this knife both has one of those lanyards I made, and helped open up some mistakes to redo them. For a belt pouch, the Super Bear Jaws sheath fits it perfectly.

I’ve been about to get one a couple of times. It looks good and i am sure it is a good mule too. By the way i have always wondered... what is the relationship between Cuda and Camillus brand if any?

I'm holding out to see if they drop the price. Wal-Mart tends to do that, especially around the holidays and on new items if they don't sell well, and I'm counting on these not selling well because they are in the fishing aisle instead of with the rest of the knives.

Cuda used to be a name Camillus did with high end tactical knives. Now it seems Acme's using that brand name for fishing gear. Not too long ago, Amazon had a Camillus version of that knife with VG-10 steel for almost the same price which would probably be better. At $20, might grab one myself next time I'm there. The Matchbox car side of the hobby will warrant another trip to WM after Thanksgiving anyway.
Does it have a locking spike? Looks like it.

Here's my first gen W100P (the P designates it as partially serrated) with the original nylon sheath that I had at one time sewed a Leatherman pouch to. The Leatherman pouch was later removed. I can't find the knife and I'm not sure if I lost it or if I sold it.
Second pic is my first gen B100 with MP-600
Third pic is my second gen B100.
I like the older model better.
-
I like the older ones better too, though i cannot really say why, it's metaphysics. 8)
The older ones are Japan made and do really feel like quality, but the newer ones are no bad too, they have a shackle slot cut into the blade and removable handle scales which is a plus. The blade and handle shape are different too and are slightly bigger.
I think the newer ones have a better grip and hold. The older ones may be slippery with wet hands. On the other side talking about their folders i think the grip was much better on the older ones, due to the aggressive back groves on the spine. I really like Myerchin, they really are no frills sailor's knives.

Ibberson Sheffield “All Weather”. Really sturdy and singular with the oversized thumbhole to be opened with heavy gloves. The square section marlin spike feels really like you can plow with it. Unfortunately all the Ibberson i own tend to present rust spots. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181128/9463a408174fd6dd104bce86945af991.jpg)

Not quite a spearpoint, not quite a sheepsfoot - a horrible mishmash that I couldn't even bear to look at. :D drama much?

Your knife got me thinking about one Noah left behind. He has a Bund, but he took it with him. This belonged to my father in law, who was also a sailor, and is a German Alpha. I believe it is probably 1960's vintage at the latest.

Thanks guys!
One of the great things about using Rough Riders for scrimshaw is that the knives are so inexpensive (about $10 - $12 each) that the artist can buy them, do the scrimshaw, sell them for a reasonable price, and still make some money on the deal.
-
Looking great!
-
Anyone try these? The specs seem really good for a knife that seems to be in the $20 range usually.

Now that’s a fine mod! Really beautiful blade shape now. I have the same feeling about the original shap that aleays kept me from getting one.

WestMarine/Sog Sailing Tool.
I am quite sure it is the only plier based multi with a proper marlin spike included. There was the CRKT bivy who sported a tiny one and various multis have a c-spike but this the only one with a true marlin spike like those found on folders. The ER was a gift from my family for my 40yrs birthday. It has a shackle slot as you can see and comes along with that “tactical” looking lanyard. It has the ER security lock, the red tab you see, and using the screws you can adjust the opening friction.

Sure it looks better now! Though even on a practical level i cant stand rigging knives (or any kind of knife carried on a boat) with speary or aggressive tips. Sirs, that almost drives me mad when i have crew mates with those kind of knives around. I can see injuries coming.

Thanks for the pics - it looks great - I was wondering how the pronounced curve of the spike would translate to the scales, but they just eat it up! Looks extremely solid. :tu:

To be honest even the ER modified tanto is quite strange for a riggers. But in some way i feel that a tanto can still be controlled better than others.

Maybe because they are soldier derived? Soldiers did not have a lanyard attachment as opposed to the civilian pioneer ranges.

Scales are very solid and dense plastic. It's a nice knife. If you want to have a play with one you're welcome to try before you buy with mine. It has the exclusive 'Mags/Hiraethus' sheepfoot blade :tu:

Hey, thanks for your kind offer.
I might come back to it
It is an interesting knife. Is the sheepfoot blade not standard?
However, I think I need to get my tool-wishes/needs thoughts sorted first. I've seen to many BO PST lately :ahhh

Lol. No, I modified the blade - it's a bit of a weird spear point factory blade that I didn't like. Its quite a thick bkade too which is very pleasing.
Anyway, its here if and when you want a play :salute:

I like the sheepfoot blade a lot :tu:

Here are a few newer ones I haven't yet posted in this thread (top to bottom):
Myerchin Gen 2 Titanium Crew - Easy to OHO (via the shackle key/thumb hole) and OHC and weighing only 2.4 ounces on my scale, this little knife is a joy to carry and perhaps one of the lightest weight options out there that features a marlinspike. The small size and frame locks make it not quite as comfortable in the hand as some other options, however. Both blade and spike lock.
Myerchin Gen 2 Captain (G10) - Very fast and easy to OHO; use the flipper in conjunction with a flick of the wrist, and the blade flies open and locks with a satisfying clack. Easy to OHC, and the larger handle is a better fit for my larger hands than the smaller Crew version. One major downside of this knife in my opinion is the weight; coming in at 6.8 ounces on my scale, you certainly won't forget you're carrying it. Both blade and spike lock.
Colonial Riggers Knife - I'm really impressed with the quality of this piece; fit and finish are very good. It's a classically styled riggers knife with some more modern materials (stainless steel, and the scales are some sort of injection-molded plastic, maybe Zytel). The tip of the spike is very sharp (actually sharp enough to be used as an awl), which is an interesting contrast with the more rounded tips of the Myerchins. The spike locks open, but the blade does not. A bit on the heavy side at 5.1 ounces on my scale, but this is a serious working tool, not a glorified letter opener. For those who like a lanyard or the ability to tie the knife to something to prevent loss, the shackle key makes for a very solid attachment point (assuming you don't plan to use it too often as a shackle key); it is certainly a much better option than the bent little piece of wire that passes for a lanyard attachment point on the Myerchins. The only negative I see is that it isn't OHO.
-
I have one of Myerchin's "stand alone" Marlin Spikes. It's beautifully finished and came with a leather sheath just like a knife would. A real quality product.
-
We're gonna have to get this thread rollin again folks! I'll get the sailing blades out for a pic this evening :tu:
-
:tu: :tu:
-
Never thought to include my riggers in forum but I guess they are multi tools, right.
Had a couple for many years.
Some good,
Some not so,
These days, I'm only using the SOG/West Marine as a paracord tool.
-
Great pics PC! I thru my buck 110 in on this because I used it every day at sea and it was the best line cutter all around
-
Been carrying the myerchin for a couple days now, I generally stay away from Chinese made knives, but these ones are really nice to carry
-

I agree. This Myerchin Gen 2 Titanium Captain is my most carried marlin spike knife. OHO, OHC, pocket clip, and marlin spike…not a lot of options out there checking all those boxes.
-
I included the first gen Myerchin A377P in the combo edge challenge. Not quite as convenient as the newer model with its liner locks, because the first generation knives unlock by pressing on the shackle. It is, however, still a useable knife that weighs less than most comparable sized knives even with the added benefit of having the marlin spike. Check out my day 24 post (today's post) in the Combo Edge challenge where I did what I call the Castaway portion of the challenge and used the A377P to open a coconut.

I do wish I’d picked up some of the gen 1 when they were still readily available.

I see them on E-bay all the time. Just be warned, the Myerchin warranty only covers the original, registered owner, so if you buy a used one and you break it you'll just have to buy another one. :pok:

Yes indeed! The only thing I wish is that myerchin would make them in the states, that or Europe

I might get a sailing yaght afterwards, to use it.

For my use, the Boye is probably ideal, as it has a spike, but not a ton of weight. It has been at the top of my list for quite some time. But, they are $239. By no means, cheap.

Nice, sounds like you got a good deal!
How do you like that Boye? I’ve eyed them up from time to time, but haven’t quite been able to bring myself to drop the coin on one.

I like it a lot. The hard thing is to decide if it's proper for EDC. I EDC it since I got it, to make my mind up.
The pros:
Very light
Flat
Small
Exotic metals, cobalt and titanium
Paramagnetic
Marlin spike/shackle key/poking tip/prying tool/fidget.
Nice and safe locking/unlocking lockback
Boye curve
Serrated blade and non pointy.
The cons:
Shorter than K55K/Opinel 8/Endura
Serrated blade and non pointy.
The last one is a pro for naval and safety use and some other tasks.
It doesn't look threatening because it has no point also.
It's a con when you need a clean cut.
But I have my Swisschamp and an Executive for that.
It was very dull and I sharpened it easily with a diamond file.
