Title: EDC a different SAK every day for 30 days #3 - Minimal Challenge - 74mm Metal
Post by: Syem on March 05, 2018, 12:07:35 AM
Following the "EDC a different SAK every day for 30 days?" thread (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,75292.0.html) and my subsequent "EDC a different SAK every day - 30 Day Challenge - Alox 84mm/85mm" thread (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,75698.0.html), I'm going to keep going and I'd love for at least one of you to join me in doing a minimal challenge.  :pok:

Starting Monday the 5th of March I will be carrying one of 30 different 74mm Victorinox knives with metal scales (Stainless Steel and Alox) every day to keep going in my whole year of "different SAK every day" but the "minimal challenge" rules are simple : 2 layers or fewer for 30 days so you can join me with a single knife if you want that badge. I'm starting tomorrow but feel free to join me later this week....

I'll be following the same guidelines I set out in month #2 (copy-pasted below). Not planning any breaks for this months... my business trips will be a bit later this year...
Code: [Select]
Some ground rules for the challenges:
 - Carrying/using multiple SAKs simultaneously is ok but we're counting the days and not the knives.
 - Need to carry at least one "not carried in this challenge yet" knife every day. (if you're not doing the whole year with me, feel free to reset your list after each month)
 - Since this will go on for at least a whole year, breaks are allowed but only due to carry restrictions while travelling or because of hospitalization. Just pick up where you left off once you're back.
 - Exact duplicates are allowed but not twice in a row. (do not count as exact duplicates: variations in generations/tool evolution, scale & crest - type & shape & color, wear/damage, inlays/engravings and the likes. Basically, as long as we can tell them apart, it's ok to post them twice in a row). Posting a pic of the duplicates together before carrying them is strongly suggested.

Edit: Forgot to mention I'll keep counting towards my full year so from 61 to 90 this month.

"30 different 74mm Victorinox knives with metal scales (Stainless Steel and Alox)"

Wow! I didn't think there were that many in the world!

Are multiple 2 layer SAKS OK or does it have to be 1 for the 30 days or 30 for 30 days? I could do maybe 10 for 30 days. (Not saying I will! It's a theoretical question!)

You can complete the minimal sak challenge with 1 or 10 or more knives with max 2 layers... and they don't have to be 74mm or metal-scaled, that's just what I'll be using :D
If you decide to carry 30 different ones you would then have the choice to request either the "minimal sak" badge or the "30 Days and 30 SAKs" badge. I was told I had to chose between the "minimal sak" and the "111mm" badges even if I complete both challenges.... but maybe if it's within 1 challenge you could get both? We would need an official ruling about that.

OK Syem I'll join you on this epic journey. If by the end I post one boring red Spartan after the other, don't blame me!

Without further ado I'll plunge into -

DAY 1  - Thunderpants Goes Minimal (SAK-wise not Pants-wise.)

Let's kick off with a living legend - living in the sense that it is still in production. You can't beat the Rancher for pocket awesomeness. Weighing in at a mere 68 grams, according to my dodgy Chinese scales, the Rancher packs the basics into two great layers. Do not take this SAK with you if you go time-travelling back to the 1950s cos you will starve to death owing to your inability to open tins. On the other hand, the Rancher's amazing scimitar pruning blade means you will always be able to find work as a gardener in the service of some beautiful war widow, who will be so impressed by the sophisticated piece of Swiss craftsmanship in your pocket that romance is almost guaranteed to follow. So, time-travellers, it's your call!

Ok im in, as with Thunderpants you can expect me to post a few 84mm's that all look the same and a pile of Spartans but you gotta do what you gotta do when you're going for a badge  :salute:

Day 1  Forgot what this thing is and i cant be bothered checking but its minimal and today it helped me splice an eye on this rope :tu:

Day 2 for me

Behold, the mighty Rangergrip! It seems strange calling this minimalist, cos it's a big fella - but with two layers it's as minimalist as any Spartan. Indeed more-so as it lacks the Spartan's second blade.
This is the one you need if you're planning on making a salad. A one hand opening blade, non-serrated, is a rare thing on planet Victorinox so this one is to be cherished. Never mind the blunt section of the blade - why oh why?! - this thing is a great slicer.
The other standout feature is the caplifter/ large screwdriver. Since I'm not an engineer on an 1850s steam train I don't need this mammoth screwdriver but as a bottle-top-popper, this is the most satisfying tool ever made. No daft and unnecessary lock to contend with. Deploy this sucker, bust that lid open, snap it shut and the serotonin levels in your head will have quadrupled in seconds.

I'm kind of planning to do a "Spartan month"; i've got some fancy ones but it might still be a bit monotonous though so maybe I'll do a couple of 91mm months instead, then a couple of 84mm. Jee I don't know... so many knives to go through! Wenger month? Army month? I'll see when I get there I guess :D
What do you think might warrant the creation of a new badge?

Wenger month is a good idea!
But what I really want is a Cuticle Pusher badge...

Here's a wonderful Wenger Spartanesque - I can't remember its real Wenger name - who can? - but of course it's not a Spartan. It's more like a Cadet with a corkscrew and a half-arsed awl on the back.
But look at the scales! And weep at the passing of the company that made them!

Those are gorgeous! I have yet to get my hands on one (or more).
BTW Wenger still exists as its own company. They're still making bags/luggage and watches.
On the other hand a part of Wenger still lives within Victorinox. They've kept the Delémont factory and many employees. Also they've released a 65mm Wenger-branded knife a few months ago. It had a grey Vic box along with a Vic tang-stamp on the blade but Wenger scales :D

Day 4

Every time I'm packing this two-layer-legend people say, "OMG! Is that a Limited Edition Spartan from 2012? Awesome man! That is sooooo cool!"

Actually, this has never happened. Because it takes more than a serial number between 000001 and 999999 to make something special (There's an extra digit not visible in my picture. A 5 if you're curious.)
Even the red lanyard it came with could not change the fact: it's just a boring red Spartan.

Still, an awesome SAK which can deal with most gentle cutting tasks and booze-related predicaments.

Doesn't it actually have the Wenger patent pressure lock as well, I mean it's not still the 111mm liner lock for prying and screws, but it is something and doesn't make closing it harder.

Yes, I nearly went back and edited what I'd written to mention that. But for opening a bottle of beer the lock doesn't engage, so there's nothing to fiddle with when snapping the cap-lifter back home.

8765 is a hell of a lot lower than mine, i stopped carrying mine because i got fed up with hoards of people following me around in the faint hope i might pull it out and let them catch a glimpse of this much sought after rare beast, that and the 3AM phone calls from strangers wanting to buy it from me, it is also so rare that i bought it off the shelf from a shop in Italy 5 years after it was released.. my not so limited limited number is 039610. Still a great knife though and i do like numbered knives regardless  :tu:

SKACS.... Sun kissed alox casts shadows

This is an orange Pioneer -  thanks Schweizer Messer Shop! - which needs no introduction. I'd dearly love an electrician's blade or something more interesting than the can opener, which I never ever use, but the gorgeous orange colour more than compensates for that.

Lovely pic for a lovely knife but the lanyard should be black I think. Orange goes well with black :D

As for the SKACS, considering the colour of its background I'm going to assume it means "Some Know A Clear Sky" (when they see it)

Day 65:

Victorinox Escort (74mm) with Stainless steel scales including a bigla company logo. They're a Swiss furniture-making company. This seems to be a logo from the 60s.

It has lived and been used but has survived the test of time rather beautifully. Today we have a minimal sak, with Lego, with a pie, with a compass...on the tree, lets say its a Friday five threads in one special deal  :salute:

The Lego is a sak knight, or will be once i paint him and get him a shield, the pie was actually ok considering it was probably made from the scrapings off the abattoir floor, the compass came in handy to prove to an acquaintance that moss does not only grow on the north side of the tree, the knife is a knife and the tree is the tree

I got this green Wenger for next to nothing, but I baby it as if it's a Damascus Pioneer.
Shame about the advertising on it... it's there on both sides so there's no avoiding it.

Love it  :D i have seen that in Italy, to mean Association. i always have a little giggle to myself when i see it, almost as much fun as the "Farts Dempere" road signs you see in Norway.
Really like that green Wenger, i would be tempted to get the sand paper out..but im not sure if logo removal is as easy on Trans as it is on Cellidor  ???
Nice Spartan!

I think you might want to put a drop of oil on that bike before the next Tour De France...

Day 67:

Victorinox Escort 74mm in gorgeous teal Alox with an OF branding... Looks like electric lines or telephone posts?

If someone feels like doing the research on what that is exactly I would welcome it. I'm sorry about the smurfy pics too... Not really feeling it as today most of my childhood belongings went up in flames... My mom's building's attic burned completely... Hopefully the apartment is OK but there might be extensive water damage... My coin collection is gone... Among many other things...

Horrible news, Syem, I hope everyone is all right. Often the water used to put out the fire causes more damage than the fire itself... but I'd rather lose things than life!
This isn't going to cheer you up but here's another two layer Wenger basking in the sunshine - which didn't last long as the day has turned grim and grey.

Thanks for your messages!

Everyone was safely evacuated and it seems all the pets were saved too. My mom is actually away for the week and we managed to get a firefighter to save her cat. No apartment burned, just the attics but it's quite a big building covering 4 door numbers.
Water damage is our main concern at this point as we haven't been allowed back in yet.

it's a real bummer when something like this happens but nobody can foresee these things.

Luckily no one was harmed or lost something even more valuable in that fire.

Yes, the whole coffee capsule idea is totally bonkers and unnecessary as far as I can tell. I had a capsule machine in a hotel room recently - it was better than no coffee at all, I suppose, but pretty terrible.
Nice SAKs though!

This used to be a French Spartan - with the French drapeau on the scale where the Nite Ize clip is now. However, I decided to put the French bit onto a Mountaineer, thus making a French Mountaineer. The clip was an OK idea on the Mountaineer but on a Spartan it's a bit ridiculous, almost doubling the width. I'll probably tear those boring white scales off one day and replace them with something less bland.

Nice one Syem. How many distinct guilloché patterns do you have?

That's a tough question... I'll have to bring them all out at once and sort them to know. I'm missing a smooth SS one, that I know for sure!

Yours is a beauty! And in good shape too... Looks like mine got carried with keys for years.

Thank you, and yes if I remember correctly mine is unused :)

First fifth of the year is already gone...

Day 74

Victorinox Escort 74mm in red Alox with an old company logo at the front.

Given that there's only an H and the 3 words "kupfer, messing, aluminium" (copper, brass, aluminium) its rather hard to identify precisely which metal manufacturer/provider it is, but a guess might be häuselmann metall GmbH.

The other option would be to keep going and go for the different sak every day badge instead, that way you can carry what size you like, you only need another 15..something tells me you can do that  :tu:

To try and shake off that voodoo I have gone with something different. Besides it was snowraining outside and I didn't really want to take the precious "stripes" for a walk.
This is the super-simple Wenger 51. Just the blade and nothing else. I paid 24 euros for it back in 2014 and I suspect it's worth 24.95 by now!

Not sure what you mean... There's a stretched out knife image near the bottom of the door. The top left of the door seems a little bit damaged. I just had a couple minutes and was completely in the dark to take the pics so they're a bit smurf... Here's pics from both sides that the seller posted on the ad.

This arrived by post yesterday evening. I looked at my black Swisstool Spirit X and thought two things are missing - a serrated blade and a corkscrew.... so this OH Sentinel, which really should be called an Alpineer, was bought to go along with that. (Any excuse will do, really.)
Of course It would be cooler if it were black but a black oxide OH sentinel would have to come from Italy or France at great expense.

It was indeed on Ricardo and I was about to cross the whole of Switzerland to go get it (8 hours for the round trip). Thankfully my mom had to drive to Germany and was able to get it for me with a tiny detour. Paid a reasonable price for it too.

If you have a few auctions on Ricardo you wanna get you can have them delivered to me and I can make a box for you.

I have two issues with buying stuff from there, rarely do sellers accept paypal and rarely do they ship outside Switzerland..i have been lucky a couple of times though, it just means if you are interested in anything you have to ask, only a few sellers will state on the sale page no shipping abroad, unfortunately my German is as bad as my French but thankfully they know roughly what i'm asking  :D, i know most if not all will speak English but i prefer to talk in their language, common courtesy i guess. I can pay by IBAN but that's an extra £10 for my banks pocket that i grudge so i only use that if i really really want the item.
Look on the bright side though, its all the more goodies for you and i'm learning a bit of German
So thank's for the offer, i may take you up on it sometime..there's a lot of nice things on that site  :salute:

It's in great condition even though the scales show some wear. That's why I love these SS scales; they're so smurfing durable! A smooth Alox with that much wear would be in a sorry shape.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180326/ecfddb7686449a9514395f8ca4c82116.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180326/15262d8f7703ac4ccf02d0e4575bf327.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180326/b1c23cf84c07e13c1b65c8d26fbf6fc9.jpg)

Here's my Bartman Bantam.
About 2 minutes after taking this photo I electrocuted myself while removing an old light fitting. Gave me a nice jingly feeling down my left arm.

They say Roger Federer was a world-class ice skater before his uncle got him a Sportsman... nowadays, he goes anywhere near the ice he slips over on his face and looks like an idiot.
His tennis improved a bit, but still, it's a tragic story.

Victorinox Executive in silver Alox with an ad for Kolack AG at the front... Apparently this company closed down and I'm not sure what they did...

Another boring Pioneer... but with a really gorgeous woodcut by Eric Ravilious, one of the most underrated British artists who, as an official war artist, took off in a plane from Iceland in 1941 and was never seen again.

I found another Pioneer earlier, thankfully i don't need it as i have plenty other models to see me through, i like the woodcut..at first i thought it was scroll work and thought wow he was good..but i presume its an engraving on wood?

That picture was on the front cover of a book, which was printed on textured paper... here's a better example without textured paper. It's just carved onto wood. Simple but beautiful!

That blue Pioneer is not boring at all!
There can be true beauty in "simple" models too. But another fine example of that is Borg's Wenger of today! Beautiful crest and awesome clip-point blade! I'm really loving today's submissions <3

Day 84

Victorinox Prince with SS scales and COZZIO Messerschmied - WINTERTHUR on the blade. I guess it's a knife smith... But that would be a bit ironic then to put ad on knives from another company... Maybe just a shop then?

That Prince is lovely!

Here's one of my all-time favourite SAKs - the unpretentious Nomad. A gigantic Spartan, really - and most days this simple selection of tools is all I need.
I like the Nomad so much I have 2 of them. I'd like them even more if they were available with a non-serrated one-hand blade!

Pioneers are nice, i like them but sometimes i wish i chose coloured Farmers instead..they are a bit more pricey though. I already used my Nomad card as i only have one, i just wish i had one of everything and not 10 of some and none of others .
When it comes to metal scales i think i prefer blade etch than handle, i don't mind on Cellidor though

25 - Pocket pal or Secretary, not sure which as they both did red Alox, has a nice feel to it anyway  :tu:
And yes, my submissions are getting smaller ..5 days to go  :D

Nice orange! And cool ribbed red OC too!

Day 86:

Victorinox Prince with silver Alox scales including a Gurit-Essex ad on the front scale. They're a nearly 200 years old Swiss company (http://www.gurit.com/About/History) that started off doing textile finishes and printing and evolved into working with synthetic materials and composites.

2 observations:

1)Were nearing the end of the month... I'll have to find a new subject soon... (off the top of my head) What do you guys think about 65mm knives? I'd have to mix scale materials but it would be cool to have a Wenger-dominant month after this Vic-only month, wouldn't it? I have to check but I think I have enough :D

2) So many Princes! I never realised! And on the other hand Ambassadors are not very well represented... I think I like the long files more than scissors... I definitely like the small blade! I'd prolly be happy to grab a Prince but in doubt I guess I'd stick with Executive/Director models

Really scraping the barrel, here.
I found a 2016 Pioneer hiding at the bottom of a drawer, along with a Cadet of the same vintage. I knew I'd bought the Pioneer but I have no recollection of buying the Cadet, which is, uh, worrying.
I can't say I like this colour. (Well I could, physically, but I would be lying.)

So as some of you probably saw in my month 4 thread, I found out that due to the mess of month 1 I used the same knife on days 20 and 61. I therefore postponed day 2 of month 4 to redo day 61 with another knife.

So here is

Day 61 (again)

Victorinox Escort 74mm in red Alox. I'll let you read what's on it :D

Now I've set aside all of the first month's knives so it won't happen again.
