Title: Looking for ideas- and maybe more!
Post by: Grant Lamontagne on July 03, 2013, 06:52:32 PM
Some time ago I found this on the ground at work- its a link from a chain that drives a gantry crane.  Its solid steel and reasonably thick- as you can see compared to my Wenger Swiss Clipper and Fauxton.

My motive for grabbing it was firstly because it's kind of cool and secondly because I thought it would make a nice one piece multitool- although certainly a heavy one!

Anyways I thought it might make for an interesting brainstorm here.  Also if anyone had any specific ideas or desire for making something out of it, when we are done discussing it I could send it on to that person to make their masterpiece.

So.... anyone have any thoughts?  :D

Oh that must be one of the new leatherman one piece tools, I can tell by the rust.   >:D

Leatherman peanut.  One piece tool targeted at gantry crane repairmen.

In case anyone is wondering, this is the kind of crane the piece came from.

Those look like some good ideas so far.

Pity the link pin hole isn't a bit smaller so it could be filed into a 1/4" hex.

+1

You could add some gears, brass and do something Steampunk (Neil would really appreciate it)

Grant are you sure you want to walk under those things if bits are falling off?  :ahhh

You get used to the bits and pieces falling off.  That's why we wear the plastic hats.   :ahhh

I'll have to check when I get to work today, but the holes may be small enough to file into a hex wrench.

Grant you spend your days wondering round picking up rusty bits of metal.  Are you sure you are not tony?

I am certain I am not Tony.  We have totally different criteria for the rusty metal bits we pick up... :P

I like it!
It has some potential :-)
I'll get to brainstorming when I'm near a computer

maybe cut down a cheap 1/4" wrench and weld it in, and then grinding it back it down into the hole.

Why make one if you can get one :)

That sounds like the antithesis of what modding is about...   :ahhh

I would personaly be much more worried about being the one driving/piloting (due to the lack of a better word) the crane. I would not like to be be up there when my crane is falling apart!  :ahhh

It's only the bits and pieces that fall off.  The frames are pretty secure, otherwise they couldn't lift containers with them.

Had it been some random bits falling off I could agree but this is a chain master link side plate, as in one of the pieces that holds the chain together.  I wouldn't worry about the frame either, I'd worry about about what they are trying to lift with that chain...   :ahhh

That link is just from a drive wheel, not a lifting component.  The worst that would happen is the wheels would stop turning and the crane would get stuck in a line.

Here is the machine this chain link is from. Or part of it anyway. The tire alone is about six feet tall.

I don't know, but you'd need a heck of a ladder to get into it!
