Couldn't find one so thought I'd start. Here's mine, version1 ST1 on the left, version 2 on the right. All Schrade tough tools welcome!
-
What's the length of that tool when closed ?
What does it weigh ?
Will you post a pic of it closed.
-
It's about 10mm longer than the original supertool in the pic closed, open there's less in it. I make the weight out about 240g. It's a really strong tool. See this;
http://wiki.multitool.org/tiki-index.php?page=ST1+Tough+Tool
They still make the version 4 tool, I have one but it's a shadow of versions 1,2 and 3. If your interested in getting one just make sure it has U.S.A on the plier head, and your guaranteed one of the better versions!
-
I'm in, I have a couple (of dozen  ). I just can't seem to resist them when I see them on eBay. I even have a DLC ST1 which is very 'cool' ( I like DLC, it just feels nicer in the hand than BO for some reason).
I agree about what rubbish the non-USA versions are - they look much the same but all the quality has been sucked out of them.
-
I'm in. A while back here on the forum I got a practically brand-new series 1. Neat, quirky tool. :tu: My boss carries a later US made one every day, he swears by it.

Haven't seen any ST5's posted yet:

Like the ST5! :tu:

Don't have one yet. Fairly impossible to find up here...but I keep looking. :)

If you want the Craftsman 45471 relabel here's one on ebay that the seller will (supposedly) send to Canada:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/111380345275
I think the seller has quite a few of these but so far they have been selling for rather high prices.
-
Some good looking tools.
I really need to give one a try one of these days.
-
Or buy it now for $175! http://www.ebay.com/itm/Multi-tools-45471-Craftsman-tools-Multi-Tool-Survival-Tools-Fishing-Pliers/111373225184?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D23423%26meid%3D7678379480174020048%26pid%3D100005%26prg%3D10050%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D111380345275&rt=nc
I put an offer in for $80 they come back with $120, they would probably sell for around a $100, but with import and postage too rich for me. :salute:
-
Ouch. I think I will pass.
-
Those have been going high. Last one I remember went for over $150+.
-
Schrade Tough Tool v1 and v2. :)
-
Couple of ST2's
-
Craftsman rebrands 45471 and 44509.
-
Vise Grip Schrade collaberation. 5WR, ST6, 6LC. A couple 5WR's still in the packaging. :)
-
Wow, good ones David! And yes, it is quite remarkable how much the ST5 and the Schrade Vice-Grip tools have been selling for. (puts me in mind of the Kershaw A100) :o
Okay, here's one you don't see every day: An ST2, in patriotic red, white, and blue colors :multi:
-
That's a rare beauty Bob! 8) :)
-
I had two of the original's, gave one away as a gift.
Also have a couple of the Tough Chip scissors-based tools.
I haven't even handled the non-USA made tools, so can't comment on the relative quality, but I think the models I have are great. Would love a slightly less "eclectic" tool selection though.

So that takes care of the Schrade I asked about. :D
-
Hello Steve, good lookin Schrade Tough Tool. :tu: :)
-
I don't know if this thread is for more than posting pictures of the tools, but my ST-1 got some use today. Fixed a lawn mower, disassembled(destroyed) a picnic table, and took down quite a few mounted items.
The other night I completely took apart and then correctly reinstalled an accordion door assembly for my friend with just the ST-1, the maintenance crew had done the opposite of fix it...
My reground and reshaped phillips has been working wonderfully, especially since I have no clue what I'm doing with a grinder.
-
Still have the original USA-made Schrade Tough Chip scissors multitool.
I traded off or gave away the larger "Tough to Open" tools. ;)

Thanks buddy!

I got one also. Lovely tool.
-
I've just bought an unusual ST1. It is a USA made version (not the crappy later model ST1), but it has a flush plier pivot - something I've never seen on a USA ST1 before. It has the older style blade with very fine serrations. According to the seller it came from the Schrade factory closure sale. It was marked "Save" and "Old Style". The plier pivot has the usual Schrade logo on it.
Has anyone ever seen this style of plier pivot on a USA ST1 before ?
Here is a link to the auction (click on "see original listing" to see photos).
http://www.ebay.com/itm/361600268394
I probably won't see this tool in the metal for a while, as it has to go via Oregon before it gets to Australia.

Another great find!

I've never seen one with that flush pivot before Greg. :o Perhaps you've got yourself an early design prototype there. Congrats!
If I recall correctly, David has an early ST1 with the fine serrations, but I do not remember anything about the pivot on his.

I have several other ST1 series 1 with fine serrations on the blade, but all of them have the regular (non-flush) plier pivot. When the flush pivot one arrives in Oz I'll report on any other differences I can see.

Great, I'm looking forward to it! :salute:

I have just seen some photos of what looks like an ST1 with flush plier pivots (not the best quality photos, as they are on the packaging of a NIC ST1 that just sold on ebay). Click on "see original listing" to see them:

Ah, so you think maybe they used an early flush pivot prototype for the packaging photos?

I'm not sure if the tool with flush plier pivots is a "prototype" or that is how the very early production ones were made, but essentially, yes :) It was a similar story with the very early PSTs - the photos published in the first catalogue were significantly different to the tools that were actually sold.

I was thinking of that very thing. :salute: :salute:

What are these worth these days ?

What are these worth these days ?
IIRC I've seen good examples of the Craftsman 45471 (which is a re-label of the Schrade ST5) go for around U$100 recently
-
Thanks Greg, I just won one in a two item lot and will probably be flipping it. It's supposed to be in good shape although no pictures of the tools open so I'll find out when I get it. I kind of took a chance because I haven't seen one before and thought it might be worth something.

You got that for good money. But the big question is the screwdriver insert still in it many of the used ones are missing. Espically the early ones with double inserts. Since they are an odd size they are next to impossible to replace since Schrade is long gone.
-
Thanks for the info David, hopefully it will come with the bit. If not I'll see if I can mod something to work.
-
Well this is a bust, I think I will be sending it back. The knife blade is broken in half , the chisel tip is chipped, missing the insert and to top it off there is heat damage to some of the tools and plier jaws. Must have belonged to a welder.
Not as described :twak:
-
Bummer. Probably why it was turned where the tools weren't shown. I've bought a lot of tools from them in the past they always did the right thing and took care of any problems back then. Hopefully they still do.

He has taken care of it by refunding my money and told me to keep the tool :tu:
-
Good to hear! Got any ideas on restoration?
-
I never saw this thread. I've had what I think is a V1 ST1 for several months now. Interesting tool, and solidly built :tu:

Interesting, Kyle. My V1 has a very different main blade than yours.

The serrations on mine are basically nonexistant. Instead, the tool has a full serrated blade.

I believe the ST1s with very fine serrations on part of the blade on the combo blade is the very early production version v1, all the later ST1s (that I have or have seen) had the much more common coarser serrations (including most v1 ST1s).

Neat. I know it's a V1 but didn't realize it was an early one. Thanks for the info!
-
I have one of these, but never carried it because the tool blades all bypassed the stop with slight force making it unsafe to use. The pliers are great, to tool is well made. except what I mention.
-
Been looking for a Toughtool club since I received mine a week ago. I'd fancied one for a while and then one came up for a silly price so I grabbed it. I believe it's the ST1 (later version with heavier serrations on the clip point blade).
My only other pliers MT is a Spirit so I won't compare the two, except to acknowledge the TT's jaws open wider than the Spirit's. Needless to say I love the quirky design of the TT. The pouch is fantastic - very heavy duty. The Black Sabbath of MT pouches. I like the tool selection but would've liked scissors and woodsaw instead of the flat 'scraper' blade and 'leatherbore', but never mind.
The only down side I can see is using the knives is difficult because of the way they fold out of the handle. But again, it's one of the quirks and I prefer something with character than not.
I'm glad to join this club

Welcome to the club Mags. It is indeed a quirky tool. Sort of awkward to use, but I am not a heavy user anyway, and I dig it :tu:
-
I have looked at getting one of the USA made early ones for a long while and glad to see that they are still being gotten  I always like to see Mons carry his and now I can see the pics of yours as well :like: :like:
-
I only really carry it for the occasional TBT though. It's just kind of heavy for my liking, but it does sit well in my back pocket. I may carry it this TBT :tu:
-
It's an odd fish. My first experience with an MT was the Spirit so just about any other MT is going to suffer in comparison. It's a classic case of function over form which is a good way round to have a tool, and like you said Mo, it's sometimes awkward to use, but at least it's sturdy and reliable and will do at a pinch.
Here's mine with the gang:

Yes, it certainly does feel tough and solid. If I was a frequent user though, I may not enjoy it the same, but I think one could adapt/get used to using it if one had to. It really is a good MT. I agree that it could at least have a woodsaw instead of that scraper blade.

That would be the single most important change I would make - I gave up trying to saw logs for my fire with the scraping tool. I had to use it to scrape myself up off the floor.

I think as long as it's US made, you're good.
There's some info here: http://wiki.multitool.org/tiki-index.php?page=ST1+Tough+Tool

I guess the pliers are just cosmetically different, as well as every version having different tool load-outs. Meh. I'm happy with what I got. It's amazingly solid, yet smooth. Top notch quality.
That hole is funny though. "Let's hang a picture of the tool on the wall, throw a dart at it, and make a lanyard hole wherever it lands."

I found this post in the third thread.
I found this patent information on Google Patents. Here's a link to the Schrade Tough Tool patent (http://www.google.com/patents?id=qUkFAAAAEBAJ&printsec=abstract&zoom=4).
So anyhow, about that hole.......
The patent text reads:
One use of tool 10 to clamp items like a vise is shown in FIG. 7. A multi-strand cable 106 is clamped in jaws 18 and 20 with tool 10 in a semi-closed state. An aperture 108 is preferably formed through web 68 of handle 24 and is adapted to receive, when desired, a lanyard 110. Lanyard 110 provides a convenient way to carry tool 10 on a belt or back-pack. It also allows tool 10 to clamp cable 106, or other desired item, by closing tool 10 with cable 106 between the jaws 18 and 20 of pliers 12, and by wrapping lanyard 110 tightly around handles 22 and 24. Tool 10 will continue to clamp cable 106 without the necessity of gripping the pliers in one's hands. As noted above, this advantage is due to the storing of gripping end 14 externally of the handles when tool 10 is closed.
Clear as mud, right? :D

Someone else with problems with ST1 factory oil?
Yep, the oil Schrade used turns a bit gummy and sticky after a decade or two. That ST1 has the less common CE knife blade with very fine serrations (later ones had coarse serrations). And those thick leather sheaths look capable of fending off some heavy duty punishment. :tu:
-
Hey, thanks for your information.

So after reading the reviews, i tried to find a old usa schrade tool, but to no avail. SO i picked up a new toughtool. Fully expecting a taylor brands model......it wasnt. The packaging says BTI. So after some google detective, Battenfield techologies bought taylor brands and schrade. I currently am quite impressed with out of the box quality. Very Little handle flex, everything locks up nice, tools are sharp, etc. Im going to put it in my tool bag for use, so we can see how it holds up to some abuse.
But right now, i dont think it will have any issues. Has anyone else had the same experience.

Update:
The handles are quite stiff to open out of the box but it used torx screws, so I adjusted it today and its much better. Not much abuse today, I used the saw on some drywall and removed 1 philips screw. Both the saw and philips worked well. No issues.

Thought you guys might enjoy seeing one of these, it’s a little different from the other two that I have (1-USA, 1-Taylor) in that it has scissors. Wonder who will handle the lifetime warranty to Australia now that Taylor has been sold.......
-
Nice one, Boonies.
Is that the same as the black-finish st1 in the US with Green writing?
Pic with toolset attached.
-
Thanks, I’m guessing it’s the same. Here is the toolset fanned out......
-
Very cool. Thank you. The Australian Defense Force makes it more tactical. :mn:
-
From what I understand, these didn’t prove that popular with the soldiers of the ADF. But it does have a lifetime warranty so if you break it, get a new one. 😛 Not sure that’s a good plan when you might really need it.....
-
Very cool. Thank you. The Australian Defense Force makes it more tactical. :mn:
Defintely much more tactical, but unfortunately still not at all "tough" ;)
My suggestion is to add it to the shelf queen shelf before you hurt yourself trying it on anything hard. These tools do not have a very good reputation (things went downhill fast once Taylor took over the Schrade brand).
-
Yes, this one will be a shelf queen unless we have a complete zombie takeover and then I will have to use it to defend myself.  Does the lifetime warranty still apply if I break it under those circumstances?
-
I completely agree that the Taylor TTs are pretty bad compared to the OG Schrade TTs. But, if someone asks me what is a good <$20 MT, I would throw the Taylor TT in the list as an option for NON-Heavy-Duty tasks. It would be fine for general work or fishing..IMO of course.
The stainless version, without scissors, is a better tool. Mainly, because the black Taylor TT paint comes off quite easily and the scissors are not good at all.
If anyone likes the Taylor TT, then I highly recommend spending the money for an OG Schrade TT, if you don't have one of course.
My biggest gripe on the Taylor TT is the handle splay. So unnecessary for the splay to be so wide. An easy fix, but who has the time?. ::)
Edit: I am not sure how the brand transfer will affect warranty, but lets hope the transfer effect isn't negative. The TT seems to be popular and I think it would be wise to keep developing and supporting the product. IMO
-
I just picked up a Craftsman 45471 off of the 'Bay... and I'm really not that sold on it. This is the re-branded Schrade ST5E, with the slip-joint jaws. I got it in, cleaned it up, lubricated it, replaced the missing bits and bit driver adapter with parts from a hardware store multi-bit screwdriver... and... well... I'm left wondering "WHY??" on the adjustable jaws. The slip joint allows them to open infinitesimally larger than the regular pivot. They go from just barely able to grip a garden hose end to ever so slightly better, but still barely, able to grip a garden hose end.
I find the tool remarkably heavy, remarkably wide, and the tool is very awkward to hold when using anything except the pliers.
The locking mechanism is really neat, though I wish all blades had it. Everything is ridiculously sharp, which is good. File is nicely aggressive, and there is an awesome scraper blade that works really well on gaskets. But overall I'm just not impressed. I waited and scoured eBay for one of these - nice or not - because I need a multi tool capable of removing stuck garden hoses. I don't like having to carry a MT and a pair of channel locks. Two sheaths is weird, and neither the MT nor the channel locks feel good carried in a pocket.
I'm still on the hunt for something suitable. Maybe the Crunch. I think I may end up selling this in the classified section. Hoping I can get back what I've got in it... :/

Hey Alex, bottom picture, top center tool. That's a Schrade? It looks like the Outu I have. Are the drivers well-formed? They're just "okay" on my Outu. If the drivers are good I might look for the Schrade version. I like the Outu version of the tool, I've stowed it in my first aid kit because of the awesome scissors. They go right through denim, so I figured it would be a good thing to have in a first aid kit. I've been fixing drywall over the weekend, and find they also cut metal-reinforced joint tape really easily. Only thing I had in the house that does. Garden shears mangle it and regular scissors don't have the umph.
Charles.

It is the "Schrade Tough Tool ST11" and it is identical to the Outo in every way. It just costs $5-$10 more.
The Schrade version came with a great sheath though(even though the tool has a clip). Don't know if the Outo comes with one.
The one I have was ink stamped "Schrade" in green on one handle. The ink was there when I put it away a few months ago. Took it out of the sheath and the green ink was a little pile of green dust. So now the only marking is a laser etched "ST11" on the pliers. :ahhh
And you ain't kidding. Those scissors are really really good. Surprisingly good. I cut a bunch of cardboard for a test and then cut some fine thread. Worked perfectly. The screw pivot is a nice touch too, in case you have to tighten/fix the scissors. :)

The Outu comes with a sheath, but it was too large for the first aid kit, so I have it in my pile of "sheaths that I need to find a tool for", It's a nice hard nylon sheath!
So, I'll skip the Schrade and version... what about the Roxon version with the corkscrew and all the extra tools? It's a lot larger, but is it the same quality? (Do you know?)
Charles.
-
I have not gotten the Roxon version yet, but 'Reamerpunch' did a good review of it.
Here is the thread for RP's review.
https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,77845.msg1721181.html#msg1721181
It seems a little expensive for what it is. After getting the BoxTree tool 'Yadda' posted about for $12, I think the Roxon may be overpriced a bit. But, I'll get one at some point anyway.

Tweezers and toothpick are about the same as Vic, but considering the size if the tool and original MSRP, they should be better. The ToughChip does have an outstanding set of scissors. :tu:

The ToughTool has a strong following with some professional who need the pliers on the original ToughTool, which are some of the best pliers found on MTs.
The TT is one of the better antiquated design executions. But, that said, it is definitely different from most tools and will require some major adjustment. :)

Thanks to Mr. CeHo sending an awesome gift, a mint-condition V.1 USA TT was added and is a real beauty. Also added a riveted early China-made ToughTool. Nice transition from the late version cast-pliers USA TT to the China made TT.

How does the Tough Chip compare to other shears-based multitools from leatherman, fiskars (the one similar to the MP600) and outu? I’m liking the look of the toolset and especially the large tweezers. I’m looking for a scissors based multitool to put in a first aid kit. Something to cut bandages with... and something that could cut off denim or even leather would be great.
I have the outu and the fiskars tool. Both are neat but the touch chip looks like it may be the winner for a first aid kit.
Charles.
-
Denim and Leather are a no-go for the Chip. IMO. :ahhh
-
Do the schrade tough tools fit in the tough chip? Or are they completely different sizes?
Charles
-
Sorry to report they don't. The Chip is basically a keychain tool, maybe a bit bigger. The ToughTool is a mid-HD sized. The OG ToughTool competes with the original LM SuperTool. :)
-
Okay. Was wanting to mod in a can opener but that’s not in the cards.
I just received my tough chip today and it’s in terrible shape. Scissors look like they’ve been used to cut wire and metal, and the tab for the tools is bent so none of the tools lock, and they’re all loose. I’ll be sending it back :(
Charles.
-
Sorry to read you got one from a tool-ignorant and/or unscrupulous seller. :-\
One of the reasons I started buying discontinued tools in "like new", or new without packaging, condition when possible for user tools.
