I just sold off two Climbers I had. Both had scissors with issues. And I have absurd demands of my scissors. Tip of the main blade can be broken off, and I'm fine. Slight hitch in the scissors, and they're gone.
So, with the proceeds, I was looking for something on ebay and found...
A Climber.
:climber:
Oooh. And look, Felinevet's got factory sapphire scales. So... pretty...
-
And you expect us to be surprised because...?
:D
-
What was wrong with the scissors?
-
What was wrong with the scissors?
Yeah, what was wrong with a Vic scissors, the most perfect scissors on earth? Inquiring minds want to know.
:)
-
Of the two tools, one was used. I don't know what the original owner did, but the scissors were 'gritty'.
The second Climber I purchased new last year, and within days of purchase, I tried cutting a tie holding a toy in a package. I'd just clipped three others, no prob. This one was being stubborn, and when i exerted more force, it nicked the scissor blades. Turned out, unlike the others, this one had a thin wire in it, like a bread twist tie. I tested this again later with a Micra, and the Micra cut it no problem, with no damage. The scissors still work but have a little catch in them, and imperfect scissors make me crazy.
-
I use my climber almost every day at work on something or other.
So far my scissors are in tact! I'm going to keep an eye on them after reading this though! :salute:
-
Sold two Climbers, bought a Climber, everything seems normal to me.
Just that, you could have torture tested them scissors :D
-
I'm not seeing a problem
Nope, just thought about it and all is normal at MTo.

I kinda curious whether the gritty scissors are due to blur it may have created due to heavy use? Also, curious whether a little sharpening could also bring the other one back too.

that's not insane. that's just the MTO syndrome

Yup, I'd have tried to work the ding out too :tu:

I did try. It didn't improve them to my satisfaction.
I need to be clear here, though, if I'm really insane about one thing, it's that my scissors have to be perfect. I don't expect others to have that problem. I'm just SUPER picky about them.
And Megan, yeah, don't try heavy cutting tasks with your 91mm scissors. Learn from my mistake, and your scissors will have a long and fruitful life.
-
Selling a tool and later on (hours or month, des not matter...) - possibly at a higher price, has happened to me, too. I´ve been through 2 Skeletools, Fliks, recoils, <diesel, a few MP 600 variants, ...

My poor scissors on my Swisschamp :(

No problems here!

The only way a gritty or dinged scissor could possibly be worse is if there is also sticky tape residue involved. No end of OCD crazy when tape residue is involved.

Oh, yes (or it is no? ). I hate it so much that no SAK scissors of mine are touching stuff like that unless it came to medical needs :poh: :ahhh

I have a Vic Craftsman that is my daily companion but the scissors are not too good anymore. The spring often protrudes from the side when I use it. The same thing has happened with the pliers from time to time. However the scissors on my other Vic SAKs are perfect. So I'm inclined to think it's possibly a factory defect with my individual knife.
It's possibly the same with your Climbers.

nail polish remover (acetone) takes the tape reside off like magic! I've used it for years.

Those springs are shot. They are fatigued and need replacing. Then the scissors/pliers should work as good as new.
This Marly Trouble Shooter was doing the same thing...works perfect now!

Have fixed several that were that same way.
-
I've seen those repair kits online for approx. $50 IIRC
-
I find Vic scissors are okay for everything except heavy duty. The scissors on my Super Tinker don't do too well with zip ties.
-
If you sold two climbers why not get their brothers, super tinker and compact?
Some variety is good.
I use those quite a bit along with a climber in nylon.

If you buy lots of used SAKs, they're worth every penny...IMO.

Replacing tools with some issues for one with no issues, is the proof of great mental-health so far :D

So, I got the knife from the ebay bid.
I paid $10.50 for it. At that price, I often have some trepidation as to what it's actual condition is going to be. This one was, aside from standard scuffing on the scales... flawless. Freakishly good condition.
Now I just wait for the set of factory Sapphire scales from FelineVet to show up. It's going to be SO pretty!

I did the same thing except with a Super Tinker. About the same price from ebay, and sapphire scales from Felinevet

Whoa! That's hilarious.
Well, great minds think alike.
Then again, total idiots think alike, too, so...

Yeah sorry to say, I may be pulling you into that second category ;)

Sounds like you got a good deal after all :tu:

And the ebay find with new sapphire scales...
There's no chance that I'll confuse it with any other SAK I own now. Looks REALLY nice in the new duds.

:2tu: Liking those scales!

Looking good Lynn :tu:

Good one Lynn. :tu:
-
Of course, I scuffed the scales getting them on, so it's not flawless...
But then again, it's not flawless, so now I'm not worried about using it, and potentially scuffing the scales so... win... i guess.
-
That's one of the cons of the cellidor scales though. They scuff so easily. My nice black scales that I swapped onto my Rogueneer lost that new look within days.
-
It seems to me that the translucent scales are a bit more forgiving in that their appearance is already broken up by being able to see through the material. Scuffs seem less noticeable, at least to me. And i think Silvertech are the absolute best at this, though i'm not sure why.
-
That's a good point, as the ruby scales I originally had weren't quite as noticeable with the scuffing. I think part of it is all in the angle and the lighting at the time you look.
-
There is only one way to avoid scuffing/scratching on a celldor scaled SAK...
Never open the box.
Actually they CAN get mild scuffing in the box just from jiggling around, so you get a situation I like to call "Schrödinger's SAK".
We cannot know whether or not the box has been jiggled excessively, and consequently, cannot know whether the scales are scuffed.
Since we cannot know, according to quantum law, the SAK is both pristine and scuffed, in what is called a superposition of states.
It is only when we break open the box and learn the condition of the SAK that the superposition is lost, and the SAK becomes one or the other (pristine or scuffed).
