Title: My thoughts on the 84mm Golfer and Salesman.
Post by: Aloha on July 30, 2018, 05:07:31 PM
I was lucky to find both.  Thought the 84mm Golfer would be the SAK to end my search of the perfect SAK ( if thats even possible ).  I want to love the Golfer but I really don't get along with the combo tool.  If I'm honest I also could do without the corkscrew.  So what does that leave me?  A blade and scissors.  Big deal.

Put the Golfer away for my 84mm Tinker.  Man talk about utility.  Yes I loose the scissors BUT I gain so much more IMO.  I get a Phillips, awl, both opening tools, and a secondary blade.  Whats not to love?  Well, again if I'm being honest, its the scissors.  Sure I could carry a Classic but I really dont need another blade.  The 58mm SAK scissors are great dont get me wrong but I like the larger SAK scissors.

I'm no minimalist but I enjoy having the 84mm SAK I my pocket sheath vs a larger SAK.  Sure I could pocket carry my Explorer Plus, or my CT29, or even my Swisschamp but for my off days I want a few smaller tools.

I happened upon a Salesman one day.  WOW  :ahhh.  Theres nothing to dislike on this SAK.  It every bit as awesome as my 84mm Tinker but WITH scissors.

This SAK has taken the place of my Tinker for off day carry.  I pair it with a Squirt P4 which makes for a powerful duo.

I like my Golfer well enough but as compared to my Salesman, no way.  The extra width is SO worth the extra capability IMO.

Now if only Victorinox would make a Cadet X .

I think a Cadet X could change my mind but I wonder about loosing the T&T.  I'd also wonder about loosing my Phillips and awl.  I guess carrying my Squirt P4 tho makes up for those lost tools.  Like I said, Im no minimalist so the thinness for me comes at a sacrifice.

As a guy who carried a Compact for many years, and replaced it with a Pioneer X when they were introduced, I think a Cadet X is my holy grail SAK.

Well, if we’re wishing, I want a Cadet II Plus X (scissors and saw) with a fully serrated main blade and plain edge small blade.  Ok, I’m leaving Never-Never Land now.......😛

Fantastic topic and pics, thanks for posting them mate   :salute: It's really rare to see pics of the salesman, feel free to post some more if you want  :D

If i had to choose only one Sak to be my favorite the small Tinker would be it, for sure. But I've been drooling over the idea of getting a Salesman (or three) for a very long time. It's what i would consider the "perfect" Sak for me.

I'm not a minimalist "per se", but i really hate to carry lots of stuff around with me, both in my pockets or elsewhere. The 84mm 2 layers are ideal for me and 95% of my EDC  needs, but to have that added 84mm scissors would really make it perfect.
Unfortunately Vic is not bringing the 84mm scissors back, and old Salesman's are e vary hard find in good shape (or ridiculously expensive), especially the later ones with the round Philips. I know some of you would be shocked, but the older square Phillips never really did it for me...    :pommel:

! I kind of had the same experience with the 84 mm golfer.  I ended up turning my golfer into a ShackJack by adding a wood saw.

I really miss having another back layer tool.  At least on the compact you get the file hook.  I'm more of a fan of the corkscrew as you might have guessed and really enjoy my climber small.

I also want a Cadet X but can't decide if I want the small blade or the nail file

@MacGyver.  Huge fan of the 84mm Tinker as well.  I've got a couple that still see carry time.  The Salesman however hit a really sweet spot for me.  I'd say its perfect but I've said that before so I'll just say its a wonderful SAK.  I was into the 84mm Recruits as well but not having any back tools left me a little flat.  Great beater SAKs but not EDC SAKs.

I dont mind the square Phillips tho I can agree the round one is pretty nice.

Cadet X on paper seems like a great SAK.  Missing the back tools however....... .  I think I'd prefer the nail file vs extra blade.  I think I'd miss scale tools as well.  Heck if Victorinox made one I'd give it a try for sure regardless.

We all know that if Vic did ever produce the Cadet X that we'd all buy one regardless if they had a nail file or small blade.
And a lot would be bought as donors for all sorts of 84mm scissor mods.

If they would bring back the Salesman, I might buy new SAKs rather than rescuing them from the TSA. Particularly if the put the hook with the file on the new ones.

Of course, we've only been asking for more scissored 84s for 20?25? years now....

Great topic for a thread.  I absolutely adore the 84 mm Golfer and bought my first at a small shop in Switzerland when I was a student traveling through there in 1988.   I converted that original SAK to a Voyageur-alike and have since then picked up a couple spare Golfers.  However, what jumps out at me about this thread is how many times other MTO folks talk about how perfect a Cadet X would be.  I just posted on the Mod Squad forum about building a Cadet X for this very reason.

A couple weeks ago I got a beater 84 mm Golfer in a TSA confiscation lot and my idea is to get a brand new Cadet and use the Golfer's scissors to build a Cadet X.  It'll hurt like hell taking apart a brand new Cadet, but I want the knife to be perfect, so needs must as they say.

I dont understand why Vic discontinued the 84mm scissors.  It was a production model am I right?  I'd love to see a whole range of 84mm SAKs.  Heck I'd love to see a 84mm Explorer while we are at it.

I'm afraid I'd have to disagree on that one... I'd be kind of pissed if they reissued the Salesman or the Small Climber with the bloody hook on the back...
Nothing against it on the 91's, and i see it's usability on some cases, but not on a urban/compact EDC 84mm sak. For me it would just add weight and spoil the back lines of the sak. I just love to see that middle spring flush with the liners there  :D
If anything i could give up the small blade if they chosen to put the file there, but that's it.
Oh...and while we are on the wish list subject, nickel liners instead of alum ones wouldn't hurt...  :D

Spoil the lines? Valid point. But add extra weight? I don't think that really happens.

The 84mm is nice without the hook.  I know, blasphemy.  I like the backside awl and phillips.  I was a huge fan and still like the Recruit.  I do miss the back tools tho and the scale tools.  For the size I prefer the Cadet 2 since its slim and looses nothing as compared, other the width over the Recruit which is nice.  The Tinker however gains so much.  I get a couple back tools which are great and scale tools.  The Tinker vs the Recruit and Cadet is an easy choice for me.  Not pictured is my Golfer.  The Golfer gains scissors BUT a compromise IMO is the combo tool and corkscrew.  For me the loss of the opening tools is enough for me to hesitate to carry it.  So far the Tinker is the clear winner for me over my Recruit, Cadet, and Golfer.

THEN I get a Salesman.  WOW.  So much capability packed into one layer more than my Tinker.  This was a no brainer for me.  I get the wonderful scissors and loose nothing.  Yes I gain width BUT for scissors its totally worth it for me.  This brings up the Cadet X.  Would one layer more on a Cadet X be the cats pajamas?  We still loose scale tools and backside tools.  Yes we can compensate in many way BUT why?  The Salesman is no compromise IMO other than 3 layers but in 84mm!

I struggle, I honestly do when it comes to understanding why Victorinox stopped with 84mm and 84mm with scissors more specifically.  Sales?  They keep making the Cadet so what gives?

Once in a while I would carry an 84mm SAK... like i’ve said numerous times in other threads, it’s (84mm) is convenient when pocket space is a premium... I carry mods though... either: a compact tinker small with plus scales, a golfer with phillips instead of cs or a cadet 2 X...

Cadet 2 X has all the main tools of a salesman but due to its scale thickness and despite being 3 layers is just as thick as Pioneer...

It adds a little extra weight for sure. It obviously may be an irrelevant amount, but it adds at least, the weight of the hook itself. What it doesn't take is extra "outside" space, because the hook's space is inside the frame...

Thanks a ton for the extra pics mate.  Man i really love the 84's...

I'd also choose the Salesman to a Cadet X, as much as i love the Alox models to me the cellidor models are the definition of a SAK (for me), not to mention the extra tool capability, recognizable non-threatening "friendliness", etc...

Regarding Vic not making the 84mm scissors anymore, from what it's been said one reason is the mold/machine used to make those scissors got damaged and they didn't see any advantage to have the cost of getting a new one made for the 84's given all the 91mm options available. After they got the Ex-Wenger line of 85mm's, probably even less, given the amount of 85mm also available...

While i like my Evo S16, the Evo scales are just too bulky. It wound't hurt (or add too much cost to production) to at least adapt the Evo series scissors to the 84mm Tinker and Tourist/Sportsman IMO. It would fit for sure, and all it was needed was a new backspring for it. But it's just wishful thinking, i don't really believe they will ever bother to do either situations...
