On Amazon, there are a few negative reports of the file:
1) File wears down quickly
2) metal saw on the edge of the file wears down quickly.
3) Coating on the file flakes off
Questions:
1) Anyone have same or different experiences with their Swisstool file?
2) Anyone have good or bad experiences with their Spirit file?
If its not a good file, it may be better to choose a model of Swisstool without one.

I've never had a problem with either the file on my X, or the one on the Spirit, I'd ignore the Amazon reviews as there usually either complete crap, or very wide of the mark ::)
If there is a slight complaint to level against the ST it's that the file isn't very aggresive, the file on it's little brother the Spirit however, is :)

I have an Original from 98 or so and I haven't had any problems with the file. I've used it extensively on various metals without complaint. The saw edge isn't perfect, but I have used it to cut off nails and bolts, as well as, to cut notches in brass and steel.
I am more skeptical of coated files than I am of cut files. I do, however, have a diamond coated rod that I use to touch up serrations. I suppose it comes down to the right tool for the job.

Given that they are a light duty substitute , and not a Nicholson , they do a good job . More than adequate .

The only complaint I'd have is that it isn't very aggresive and feels a little smooth. No signs of any flaking or wear though.

The "newer" files are much more aggressive than the older style, such as the one found on the standard Swisstool and earlier 91mm SAKs. The "newer" design can be found on the Spirit and the newer 91mm SAKs. However, I don't find that the new design is as versatile, because both sides are coarse--no "fine" file is provided.

I'd noticed that too, it doesn't seem a too logical step does it ???

I noticed that on my Technogolfer actually. IMO the file on my old Swisschamp is much better.

I'd rather have a tool that worked slower, but left a better finish too :)

Thanks guys for all your input. I was hoping to pick out a Swisstool model by eliminating a crappy file option but since you all seem to like your files....
I wish there were a model with PE blade, serrated blade, scissors, saw, and file. In order to get everything into a single package, I wouldn't mind replacing one of the flat head screw drivers with a small scissors (taken from a small SAK). That way I can have my cake and eat it too. Too bad SAK won't custom build one for you.
At worst case, I could actually do without a PE blade but they don't make one like that either.

Trust me , Im not a Mod , just owned a bunch of MTs , the Swisstool and Spirit have the best build quality out there , get started right , get a Swisstool , and a Spirit for light days .

Never! If you want a MT with all of your reqested features then go for the SURGE. Plus, it has oho blades which are a very nice thing to have. Also, the saw and diamond coated file are both replacable... If you don't want to deal with spring tension or rounded drivers than go for the SURGE! :D :o :salute:
