So... Anyone has any pics? Any info? Size? Tool config? Scales? Packaging?
Victorinox just posted a teaser video on FB but the SAK they used in the animation looked like a plain Spartan.
-
Black tools Tinker, just hope it has 3D printed scales
-
I'm honestly surprised they didn't use the Japanese market Master Craftsman. I'll take the Tinker though... I wonder how painful the price will be?
-
I confess I'm uninspired by this. I wish they had brought back the Apollo astronaut inlay.

And on black scales...

:iagree: That is strange. Not sure where black scales came into it. :dunno:

Thanks. Apparently there were more pics and vids posted in some of the FB groups.
Looks like the knife has an image of the lunar module on the back. Nice!
-
I'm a huge Space Race fan, so this is definitely on my wish list (providing the price clears thru my approving authority ).
-
I've got one on order from the Swiss Knife Shop. They are lovely knives (Astronaut space suit scales) with "Earth rise" on reverse.. Hope it arrives this week sometime. The Tinker is my EDC, so I'm happy with the Moon landing Tinker. Also I'm an Apollo 11 collector, so this is great. Here is their link ;

Although quite cool, I think that's a different knife isn't it? That one looks like Swiss Knife Shop's own commemorative SAK to celebrate the same occasion.

I don't know of any others (don't do FB). I'm quite happy with Swissknifeshop's version. Beside, I really dislike black bladed knives of any kind.

Me too!
-
Nice as it is, that's obviously a different one :)
-
I received my Man on the Moon Tinker from the Swiss Knife Shop yesterday. A standard Tinker with the scales as linked to above. Very nicely done colored scales. I'm very pleased with it; of course I'm an Apollo 11 collector. I do wish they had included something about it being the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. I guess my string tag will have to do for that. Overall a nice piece -glad I got it.

That ticket has a $2500 (possibly, it's not easy to make it out) price on it!
Sorry, I'm out.
:hatsoff:

Me too Steve.. looks like the SMKW Tinker for me too.

Thank you for the link, Rich! :salute:
I do not have a Tinker in the collection(have no idea why), so $28 seemed like a great price on one with those awesome scales. :)

Do you have the "space pugs" edition?

Very thoughtful recommendation, Blackbeard. Ordered. Thank you from me and Geordi. :D

2500 Mexican Pesos :)
That's about £105 UK, probably plus costs & tax - maybe £150?
Still too steep for a tight-wad like me.
:(

Wow, you have 10 challenge badges, you gotta be the MTO champ at this point :salute:

Not even close Blackbeard :D. It takes the stress out of what to carry for the day
-
No space pugs for me. Although the SKS has a Man on the Moon Classic that I might get. Not really fond of Classics, but do have a couple in my meager collection. I might consider a space cat. I'm really happy with the Man on Moon Tinker.

No space pugs? :pok:
J/K of course.
I'm not a big classic guy either, but having a pug makes the space pugs sentimental(well. more memory inducing I guess) in a way. My last one who was with me for 15.5 years was a fawn pug who looked like the one in scale art.
Space cat sounds cool too. :like:

There should be a badge for that!
-
 I agree!

We've had Man on the Moon, Pug on the Moon scales. Now how about we celebrate the 50th Anniv. of Apollo 11 with
Astrocat SAK scales. He is a member of the National Space Cat Administration.
Rich
-
 Outstanding!
-
Both SKS LE SAKs I ordered came today. Quite lovely knives for sure. Not too sure the finishing would hold up well in pocket, but I've got plenty of user SAKs, so these babies are Shelf Astronauts. :D

Limited to 1969 pieces and all sold out already, i get the email, click the link and the website is down and by the time the site is back up they are sold out, they must have been popular, congrats to all that managed to get one
-
The second the countdown was over it looked like a million people had hit refresh on their page. Site was down intermittently for more than 3 hours. Impossible to go through the steps to pay for the knife.
Their IT guys must've been thanking the marketing department for creating this situation on a Saturday night.
-
:iagree:
And even though the knife does look good and the price is ok-ish for a SE, I feel as if they could have done much more for this release.
A Black Ice Master Craftsman with these scales would have sold out in the same time for 4x the price me thinks.
-
I agree. The Tinker? I would have thought the Japanese market Master Craftsman would have been the one, since it has the NASA connection. Either way, a beautiful knife and congratulations to everyone that got one!
-
Agreed, it would have been nice to have but i'm not crying into my cornflakes because i missed it, they could have done more
So come on Syem, limited to 3 per person..how many did you get ?
-

Well... I got 3... But I can say the same about a few family members who are not very much into SAKs :D
I must say I don't understand why they put a 3 per person limit for 1969 pieces when they put a 1 per person limit for 6000 pieces...
-
I watched the timer time out, and then the site crashing. Was curious about this model and maybe ordering one or two.
Don’t mean to speak ill of Victorinox but this knife is nothing really special. Why a tinker? I think they should have done something with the Master Craftsman/Astronaut tool configuration and an inlaid Apollo Lunar Module, something like that.
What they produced now with the printed scales looks cheap.
Definitely not worthy of all the fuzz with the countdown clock revealing if you ask me :dunno:
By the way I would be surprised if the site crashed because of massive ordering of this knife. 2000 people ordering a knife should not crash a big website like victorinox.com and I don’t expect millions of people were looking at it, the market for special edition SAKs is not that big I think. When I woke up this morning they were not yet sold out, I could still place them in the virtual shopping basket. I just couldn’t bring myself to ordering one..
-
But of course to those who did get one, and are happy with how it looks: congrats!
Don’t let my negative opinion ruin your fun! I simply had other expectations about this SAK :)
-
Glennfiddich1983,
Which SAK are you talking about?
This one?
https://www.swissarmy.com/us/en/Products/Swiss-Army-Knives/Medium-Pocket-Knives/Tinker-Man-on-the-Moon-Special-Edition-2019/p/1.4603.3PL19
The Swiss Knife Shop version was good enough for me at $28(or whatever it was). But, that said, I am definitely not a serious Vic collector and probably wouldn't feel right if I had one, since there are so many dedicated Vic collectors who put their awl into the hobby.
-
Yes, that one!
Looks like it is still available there by the way!
-
$440 buy it now on eBay. Not my listing.

What a scumbag doing that on eBay.
-
I agree.

I just couldn't help myself. I ordered the 1969 LE from Vic for $99 after tax just now.
Saved $341 by not buying from that "generous and kind" eBay seller.
It was calling to me all morning. I waited long enough for the serious collectors to get their orders in I think. :ahhh
:woohoo:
Will it be as special as the MT.o Pioneer X? Don't know yet. :)

Congrats gerleatherberman :tu:

At least we'll never have to pay a ridiculous markup to get one, which has already started looking at the listing FB posted.
:woohoo:
-
And if you ordered and don’t like it you’ll probably be able to sell it with some profit :P
-
Missed it
-
I don't even think it was ever available in the Netherlands.
-
I like the SKS graphic better, but got the 1969 version. Use one, keep one, sell one. Maybe that *bayer wants to recoup cost for all three with one sale? ::)
I should put mine up for $299 BIN.
Still available for the US...I wonder what the allocations were?
-
I read on Facebook that due tot their server troubles they somehow accidentally sold more knives than there where available. So even if you ordered one, there's a chance that it will be cancelled and refunded.

Thanks for the info, but I looked and didn't see that post. Admittedly I am not very active or savvy with facebook. :ahhh
Do you happen to have a link to it?
They also still show in stock in the US, and I wouldn't expect a server issue to be left unchecked for such a large company going on two days. Hopefully we'll all get our MOTM LE we ordered. :ahhh
-
Their server failed to update quantities so they sold way more than were available. Logistics are still trying to sort this mess out... They probably love their IT at the moment... And their IT must love the marketing department.
I should have some but not as many as was planned... Still better than none though!
-

Yes, they do show in stock and they allow you to put it in your cart to purchase, but I see now that it says sold out where they talk about limited quantity of 1969.

I just called Victorinox customer support and the lady told me that my order is shipping and that she didn't know anything about orders getting cancelled in the US that were placed yesterday.
I had also ordered one for a friend and she(CS rep) said it is also shipping today.

My only wish is that they would have put an astronaut on the scale, even if it was just a partial view of a helmet or something.

Did you order the Swiss Knife Shop exclusive version as well?
The SKS version looks more like a "Man on the Moon" graphic than Vic's. Though Vic's is still very nice looking.

Yep, the ones I ordered are going to be Shelf Astronauts too. I ordered the Tinker (like you), and I ordered the Classic with the same scale. I didn't opt for the pug...at least not yet. Now, if it had a pitbull, that'd be hard to resist.
-

Imagine, they had 50 years of time to design a nice "Space/Apollo Program/Apollo 11 Commemorative" knife! But time was too short. I think Victorinox missed a big opportunity.

Slightly off topic, but related. Has anyone gotten the UPSP Moon stamps or envelopes yet? I tried to order off the USPS website and it was a nightmare. You have to set up an account with USPS (a long process) and then set up a separate VISApay account (a real nightmare that would not work. I finally backtracted and cancelled out my order. I'll never even think about buying anything off the USPS site again.
I called my local PO today and the stamps and envelopes aren't available locally yet :-(

Glad I got one to carry. Wiped the excess oil after I unboxed it and straight into the change pocket. #1,19X for this one. Maybe I shoulda ordered later. :D

The SKS is striking. I think it is a little bit better graphic for the scales than the official Vic version. But, that said, having the official Vic version makes the SKS feel more legit. :D

Very cool you got one to carry! :like:
My money has been slim lately, so I didn't split for a user. Hope the graphics hold up for you! It is definitely a beautiful piece. :climber:
The Vic scale graphics feel tougher than the SKS version scales. In fact, I wouldn't even keep the SKS version in the box, because the scale finish feels a tiny bit "tacky" to the touch, so I am leaving it out for a few weeks on a piece of paper(and flipping it over periodically). :ahhh

Thanks for your thoughts on the SKS :tu:...your pictures make me think the same. And thanks for the tip on the finish...I'd do the same if I get one.
I did splurge on the user since I was curious about the PS and I think I'd have regretted only getting a shelf copy when a user PS Spartan cost almost as much. I've carried the clear-coated type print (not even sure of the process name, but different from the older non-clear printing)...they seem to hold up pretty well and tolerate a bit of polishing. I have bought used knives for parts where the coating was chipped and failing...seems almost/about as thick as automotive clear.

I have the complete Swiza-set inclusive the number 2/100 of a special model limited to 100 pieces. Maybe I can show some pics in the next weeks
They are real beauties.
-
Ah yes, my signature usually gets attention when the damage is done :D
-
Normally you can expect those prices after a couple of years. This time it’s happening really quick. Some peope really wanted it and missed it due to the issues with the Victorinox website.
But apart from those website issues Victorinox is also to blame for these insane quick price raise, allowing 3 of these to be ordered per person. I think that’s just an inapprehensible and unfair decision to collectors :dunno:
-

Yeah...caught my attention even when I was lurking since 2016. Every time I read it, I'd think, "Yup." :D

Maybe it was an experiment to go to 3 per?

As I said before, those scalpers are scumbags.
But, that said, nobody should ever let their obsession lead them to pay 4X+ for a knife the same week it was officially sold. That just keeps scalpers doing what they do.

I really wanted one of these, but as mentioned above, the UK site was down... Despite me trying for almost two hours, I just couldn't get on to purchase one.
If anyone wishes to relieve themselves of theirs at a reasonable price, please just me know. Thanks

I noticed some tiny silver spots on the liners on my user copy when I unboxed it. Seems like there are a few more now, and I have to question the durability there. Rest of the knife has been fine with light use and pocket carry. Still lots of oil coming out of the joints.
I bought this one to use it and I like the PS coating so far, but not a fan of whatever was used for the black liners.
....
One sold this morning at $200 +$7.88 shipping. Looks like he has one more BIN. Same seller that did not get any bids at $275 and had a BIN price of $357.50...that auction ended last night.
Deleted the picture with the sleeve upside down from the new listing.

About 3 per person and about the model choice, I've heard from a friend who spoke directly with someone at Vic that:
- the craftsman officially became the cosmonaut's knife in the 80s. SAKs were used before that but not specifically this model and not officially.
- the black finish is expensive and using a thicker knife would've made it too expensive. Why "too" expensive? Because they wanted to make a "popular" realease... Just like the event was a popular event.
- the 3 per person choice was so that people could share it; because people who witnessed the event all have a story about what they were doing at the time, who they were with etc. and have shared that story just like Vic wanted this knife to be shared.
-
Sure. Shared at price x2 within a week.
Thank you Victorinox ::)
I feel as if they really dropped the ball here this time.

These are sold listings (sorry for the Dutch, my ebay app is on Dutch language)

The seller at $200 BIN sold all 3 of his today. At least prices are calming down a bit. It'll be interesting to watch the next couple of auctions.
The blade etching is worth the price of the knife alone. The part that gets me is how I missed them when they came out in '89..
14 hours to go on this one...and 'only' bidding at $415 now:

PM sent, Myron. :pok:

 Actually, that's the best price I've seen on that knife in a long time.
If I picked up a knife for that price, everyone would be celebrating the first unpowered lunar orbit in history....mine! The seller at $200 BIN sold all 3 of his today. At least prices are calming down a bit. It'll be interesting to watch the next couple of auctions.

I think I remember seeing one go earlier this year for $425 or so that was in NIB/NOS condition. The one in this particular listing looks a little more, um, "used" to my eye.
-
I remember that one too Myron. I agree with you about this one, in that it looks like it's seen some action over the years.
-
Interesting...I'm guessing that it was just high up on the list for those two bidders. Real commitment on the bids.
I don't mind used copies, but not that and not in that price range.
-
At this moment a 'Man on the Moon' is for sale (auction) at ricardo.ch.
Price now is already 225 Euro's.
https://www.ricardo.ch/de/a/victorinox-man-on-the-moon-1075728364/
BTW: I will NOT bid on it, nor am I the seller.

Hi, I am the one who purchased the used knife for 455 USD :) I just registered on that forum to explain why I bought this knife in bad shape at such a high price after reading your comments.
It actually breaks my heart to see such nice collectibles in bad shape like this one. I'm lucky enough to live in Switzerland so I figured I would buy it - almost regardless of the price - and send it back to Victorinox workshop for a full restoration.
I already contacted them and sent pictures of the knife, they told me they can probably do something to remove the smaller "scars" and perform a full cleaning of the blades. They also mentioned that after the restoration we would still probably see some of the bigger "scars" and they warned me that if they break the knife during the process they cannot replace the sides as they are not being produced anymore...
But I'm willing to take the risk just to save that small little guy from its condition. I'm not sure if I will decide to keep it after the restoration process of sell it again, knowing that the idea is not to make any profit but get at least of portion of the cost back.
I apologize for any mistake in writing, english being not my native language :)
Thank you!
-
Your English is excellent! Thank you for saving this treasure, and please post pics of it when you get it back from Victorinox.
-
Yes, I can't wait to see it when it's done! Please come back and let us know how it turned out, Vicfan. Welcome to MTo!

:hatsoff:
Guess you have been more convincing to the seller about shipping international, because when I asked he said he wouldn’t do international shipping
-
I am using a forwarder, so the seller actually ships to a US address and the forwarder ships it back to me, at additional costs for me of course.

Thank you for taking the time to sign up and for your reply! You're english is great!
I do respect, admire, and appreciate the commitment to save and restore this one. :tu: I was interested in doing the same, but I would have done the resoration myself. I only wish you got it at a lower price...the other bidder was very committed too. I am glad I wasn't your competition! :)
Please share the pictures of the before/after restoration if you can!

Wrongo.
Looks like at least 11 sold so far globally on *bay, at prices solidly above $300 USD before shipping.
I'm wondering if unboxing or checking numbers hurts or helps values. #1,224 is also for sale in the US.
-
As always, your best bet is here on MTo. I sold mine to a fellow forum member for exactly what it cost me, plus shipping to his country of course.
-
Seems like many sold in the US are still around #1,200. I'm surprised there isn't anything outside of this number range coming out of the US.
There are #1,206 and #1,244 for sale, seller is letting buyer choose one.

Nice that it worked out for you and CeHo! :tu:

Hi all,
I just purchased this one (see attachment) on ebay - how can I know if it's one of the rarest edition or not ?
I have good hope it's a pre-1991 model as it doesn't seem to have a hook or chisel.
What do you think ? Thanks!

It certainly looks like it's pre-'91...But not sure if it should have a can key in the phillips? I was looking at it too.
EDIT: Maybe it's a 'rare' early version? Doesn't have the 90º stop opener.
-
If it helps, mine is in the high 1300s. :tu:
There's a #1,351 for sale from the states and #352 available from Germany.
Interesting to see where number ranges went so far.
-
I still have CeHo's MOTM, but haven't opened the shipping carton. I'm assuming it is close to the one I have, but we'll find out when CeHo gets it. :ahhh

Mine has the can key slotted Philip's driver and no 90º stop on the cap lifter.

Then you are a better man than I! :hatsoff:
Only a sense of honor would compel me to leave it be. I've been strongly motivated by money...used to care about prestige. Perhaps just less so now.
...
19 of these sold on * bay so far...so just less than 1%. I wonder when the scalper/speculator copies will run out.
...
Not liking the wear that's visible on the backside of the small blade. Makes light contact with the main blade when opening and it put in some fine arced swipe marks. :P

I'm sure given the actual choice, you'd do it right.
I'm also curious to know how many are left with the scalpers.
The three per customer thing really did set up a precarious situation for actual collectors who missed out on the selling. :ahhh
You are the best :tu:
Thank you much for the kind words, CeHo!
Feeling it mutual. :)

Yeah, I wonder how many are waiting out there.
Looks like #1,002 came to the States.
Went for 'only' $165. Not sure if that was a BIN price or maybe a short duration auction. Didn't notice it earlier.
Only one more for sale on *bay right now in the US, and 5 globally.
Outside of the US, looks like they've *all* sold at over $300 USD shipped. Crazy.
-
Looks like #634 and #359 (sold) originally stayed in Switzerland.
14 sold from the US so far and 22 globally from * bay.
Gotta wonder where #1,969 is! :ahhh
-
Interesting question, Kamakiri - I should imagine #1969 stayed in the factory! #1537 came to the UK - when the e-mail arrived on Saturday, I tried the link, and as many here have reported, it didn’t work, so I tried again early on Sunday morning and had success (6a.m.) - I tried again 30 mins later, and they were sold out, so I was very lucky....
-
I'd love to put those scales on my early 80s Master Craftsman!
-
Now there’s an idea!! :like: sadly, I’m sure I’d botch it up and have snapped scales, scratched tools etc!! Pity Victorinox didn’t go for a PS master craftsman/astronaut with special scales....
-
:iagree: :tu:
-
I'd love to put those scales on my early 80s Master Craftsman!
Wouldn't be an expensive set of scales at all.
Would look good though! Have you looked into the SwissKnifeShop MOTM Tinker scales?

That would make too much sense for them to keep it! Does anyone know if that's typical for Victorinox? I'd like to think it went to some really lucky Smurf!
 And thanks for the number info! I'm hoping that later placed orders have a better chance at higher numbers.

:iagree: Still a spendy mod to go that way! And I wouldn't want to get just one...
Maybe, just maybe, if Vic makes some of the other tools needed in the PS finish. :ahhh

I haven't Gman, but I'm going to!

39 sold so far on *bay worldwide. Scalper inventory appears to be out in the states and the handful available elsewhere are listed in the $500-$750 range USD. Crazy.
Aside from #100 (which sold for a best offer under $500) and the one that was pre-sold for $440, looks like the practical high range for these is about $250 in the states and about $350 elsewhere.
-
Oh boy,

Another one of these sold. This time for $569.

Next thing you know it will be hitting the Black Beauty $$$
-
I watched that one go today and could not believe my eyes. No box or manual, no other provenance, no nuthin'. I guess I will never own since their values have gotten so crazy outta hand.
And to think I had the opportunity to buy one brand new at a Cutlery World store back in 1989 but couldn't justify the price tag then, when I was a starving graduate student living on loans...
-
Now this is bananas. Anyone who missed out on the MOTM now has an opportunity to buy 15 of them for only $10k. I mean, that's only $667 apiece. Who wouldn't do this?
Same seller has a Fischer Pioneer listed for $2k. Also nuts but I'd sooner buy that than 15 double-priced MOTM's.

It has gotten out of control with the 20th Anniversary copies! They weren't even on my radar in '89. There's no way I would have spent a week's pay on something like that!
-

Any guesses how high this one will go?

I don't think it will tap $400. Mostly considering how many sold recently. $300 ish?

Originally, this shop offered three SAKs with those scales, Super Tinker, Huntsman and Deluxe Tinker. The first two, which were cheaper obviously, sold out faster. Being still in my compulsive phase, I had to amass them all  Can confirm the scales are VERY nice. The moon surface is not printed, but apparently laser engraved, so the scales feel like very fine sandpaper. Swell.

What...laser engraved...I didn’t know that. I have only seen photos, so it looked like a photo/printed. Enjoy

First one I’ve seen for sale in the states in months.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Victorinox-Man-on-the-Moon-Special-Edition-2019-Tinker-Pocket-Knife/224124330541
Not mine, in case that’s not clear. Curious how high it’ll go. Prices are a bit crazy internationally like in the $500+ range from what I remember. I guess we’ll see if there’s any pent-up demand here.
-
I got mine for $250 and felt stupid/lucky right after they released and were sold out. The only reason I did it was because July 20th is my birthday. Crazy what special models go for these days. Watching this item on eBay out of curiosity as well.
-
I have to agree that you were lucky. :tu:
Funny how our perceptions change about value like this!

I guess this one didn’t reach escape velocity. ‘Only’ went for $350 USD + shipping.
Still makes that $250 one a pretty good deal, IMO
Gotta wonder what my user would fetch on the ‘bay.

I’m guilty of it at times. Especially with vintage ones. Luckily, I get outbid by people willing to be more stupid!

I, too, am guilty. And thankfully, more often than not, I am also outbid by someone else with even less good sense than I.
I just count myself fortunate that this particular model doesn’t hold a strong draw for me.

Prices haven’t softened much for the 4th US one sold recently.
I wonder what my user would go for at auction.

I think you might be surprised. These knives have held their value like I never imagined.

Yeah, you’re probably right Barry. And I thought the values would slump a bit more here. Really surprised about the international values.
Like the Apollo 20th knives, I thought they’d take some time to appreciate much if at all.
-
MOTM #1281 appears to have sold recently at $800 via auction with a single bidder…or at least it doesn’t look like via best offer. Crazy.

The 20th Anniversary is the one I love. At least it has some connection to the US Space Program.

Yeah, not many of those have been up for sale since I last posted about them in this thread.
Maybe more will show up for sale in 2024.

Lol. Prices have “calmed down” to $480 since tgat $800 one went
