The Washington Combination Pliers invented by Chris Haeberli (spellings differ) and patented in 1915 has some really cool multitool functions. Hammer, pliers, wire cutter, snips or shears, screwdriver, pipe wrench, pincers and nail extractor are all listed and functions.
The patent shows Leatherman (1997) and Victorinox (2000) have both referenced this patent.

I picked this one up on a fleabay auction, along with the Kant-Slip Pliers and Eagle Claw Pliers.

Hmmm, very interesting. I have what appears to be almost the same tool as yours, but mine is stamped NATIONAL PLIER CO. INC. BUFFALO, N.Y. PATD NOV. 19, 1907
Which is the same date I see on the patent when I click on your link above. Must be this Haeberli fellow who invented it contracted the design out to more than one company?

This reminds me of a tool that I think was called the handyboy or something like that.

Mine has the same stamp.
The info at this link explains the name.

There is evidently a licensed version manuf. by McKaig-Hatch.

The hammer head on mine appears to be smaller?

Yeah, I was noticing that too. Probably just normal variation during the life of the forging dies, or perhaps variation in the hand sanding operation.
So regarding the markings, is yours also stamped Washington Combination Plier? (mine is not)

No mine is just like yours.

I won one of these on the bay tonight. Kinda looking forward to checking it out when it arrives at the end of the week. :)

I saw that one. Great buy! I look forward to seeing it. I spotted the other version in the latest wrenching news auction. I'll try to post a snagged pic.

I'd like to see the pic of the other version when you get it.

There were several Washington Combination Pliers in the last Wrenching News Auction on October 25, 2014.
In the link below Lot CB170 has 1 of the Mckaig-Hatch versions and Lot CB171 has one of both versions.

In the link below Lot CB152 has one of what I assume is the original model.

Thanks for the pics Y! I was unaware that Mckaig Hatch made these also. Another plier to keep an eye out for. :D

Definitely! The license was granted to McKaig-Hatch after a buy out or some such thing. I knew they existed due to an article I read, but hadn't seen one until this auction.
The Washington Combination Pliers (both versions) are different because they don't appear to be specifically created for fence work. Most hammer, plier, screwdriver tools are almost always heavy instruments meant to use on fences.
-
I'd agree there not fencing pliers.

Here are some pics Y. :)

Nice buy!

On the 'bay now. This odd lot of pliers includes two Washington Combination pliers including the McKaig-Hatch version.

A little pricey for my taste....

There are some cool pliers in that auction. But way out of my price range.

Dang, I wish the guy would have listed all of those separately. :-\

Do what I do - make the seller an offer for the individual tools you want. He might just say OK :tu:
