Title: Interesting Forester
Post by: cody6268 on December 05, 2018, 02:16:09 PM
While getting rid of some old eBay listing photos on my laptop, I noticed this OH Forester photo I'd saved (never bought the knife), due to its Swiss federal shield and camo scales.

Anyone know more about it?

I can't help you because I have no idea what the story behind those scales is. I do like them though.
I have a similar Spartan:

If memory serves me correctly, the Forester w/Swiss shield & camo was a transitional, unofficial Swiss army knife between 2003 & 2008. During this period Swiss soldiers were officially still issued the old 93mm silver alox knives. Many of them noted that in the German army soldiers were being armed w/the new 111mm SAK Trekker that would ultimately w/some modifications become the new Swiss Army Knife in 2008. Consequently, the Swiss military allowed em's to purchase the Forester in place of the alox soldier. Vic cooperated by producing the Forester w/camo & red Swiss cross. There are 2 versions: some w/square cross, others shield shaped.

Since I served only in the US military, I may be somewhat mistaken in the details, but someone who was in the Swiss Army told me the above.

Sounds plausible. But why the corkscrew? You would expect a Phillips then.
It also does not explain the Spartan.

Once upon e time I had two of these. One was seized at an airport (I had forgotten it was in my travel bag); the other I gave to a family member who lost it during a jungle trip in Peru. Both knives were bought in Bern, Switzerland at the Armee-Shop in Bern.
You can still buy there Vx knives with this particular shield!

I much prefer the Swiss coat of arms logo to the standard Vic one, and that particular camo with the splash of red is really nice.  :tu:

I also like the pairing of a modern Soldier's Knife (semi-official OHO type no longer available at the store linked to, it seems) with the modern Officer's Knife with similar scales. A wonderful nod to history. :salute:
