Title: Anything to do with Flight thread.
Post by: Chako on November 05, 2013, 12:31:55 PM
This thread was created in due to the Meeting a VIP thread in the Events sub forum. So here are the Sault Ste Marie Ontario Canada Bushplane Museum shots taken way back in 2009.

I'll have to find the thread I made last year and link to it. The Bush Plane Museum odds a great place to visit.

VERY cool!  :tu:  Let's see.... There's a Beaver, an Otter, a Norseman, a Fokker Trimotor  :o , an H-47, and a Stoof!  I'm guessing the Tracker was a water bomber.  Stoof = Grumman S2F/S-2 Tracker.  Looks like a museum I'd  just passing by!

EDIT: Just looked at the link, and I was correct on the aircraft I identified.  I'm such a nerd at times.....

Tiger Moth, Sea King, Herky Birds, a Texan (Excuse me, Harvard  ;) ), Alpha Jet, very cool.  :tu:  Is that a Jet Provost or a Tudor in the one pic?   Lovely pics so far guys.  All I have to contribute right now is a crappy cellphone pic.  But they built 18,482 of these, and only two remain flyable.....

(http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/g448/Jerseydevil379/62e935a0-542a-48df-b6d6-bf4eef6cfd49_zps21764b91.jpg) (http://s1102.photobucket.com/user/Jerseydevil379/media/62e935a0-542a-48df-b6d6-bf4eef6cfd49_zps21764b91.jpg.html)

That's a B-24J Liberator flying over my store back in September.  The most produced US combat aircraft ever, and so few are left even on display......  My brothers and I are planning a trip to several museum ships in the area over the next two months.  First up on the 24th is the USS New Jersey.  Next on the list is the USS Intrepid......

It is a Tudor.  I haven't seen the Snow Birds perform in years, but they put on quite a show!

Wow, 18,480 are no longer air worthy, that's crazy, and a shame.

I have to say that it is one of the coolest aircraft I've ever seen.  It's making its way from Belize to Israel and just stopped for a re-fuek.  A small group got off and had a couple of pics taken, and they all looked absolutely frozen!  Meanwhile I'm standing outside in a tshirt thinking how beautiful and warm it was!  :D

Sorry about the shaky vids.  I recorded these while on the forklift.  Yes, in the second video it is backing up, I didn't know they could do that!

Here's a different C-130. From what I've read there's talk that it's a CIA plane, but I don't know if I'd believe that or not.

Interesting.  A quick search shows that Prescott specializes in "non-scheduled" cargo delivery....  On a less spooky note, yesterday I made a donation to a group of ex-Marine pilots and ground crew that have restored an old Sikorsky H-34.  It's flyable, and they take it to airshows and such.  Maintaining this sucker is a chore, especially since a lot of the guys who do it were last actually trained on these machines back in the early '60's......

Yeah, I've read a few different sites that say they have been used to illegally transport prisoners.  :ahhh

Wow, an airworthy H-34.  :ahhh  I bet it's quite the job keeping that old girl functioning.  Cool to hear that there are some guys keeping one going though.

This thread was created in due to the Meeting a VIP thread in the Events sub forum. So here are the Sault Ste Marie Ontario Canada Bushplane Museum shots taken way back in 2009.

Well, it's not a photo, but I thought some of you might find this interesting...

During a flight in a Robinson R22 about three weeks ago, my passenger and I spotted this tall abandoned concrete structure in a small town on the Mississippi river south of my home airport.  I did a low reconnaissance to determine feasibility of a pinnacle approach to landing on the roof.  It appeared solid and, to be safe, I set it down as easy as I could considering the moderate wind conditions.  I was ready to pull collective and get out of there if the roof showed any sign of weakness.

My apologies for the poor quality of the video--my passenger decided to record it at the last minute.

I would be crapping bricks if I were your passenger. Oh wait. I am mildly fearful of heights. Just flying would cause previously said bodily functions irrespective of daring landings on derelict buildings.  :D

I just found some photos I took back on the 10th of June, 2009. That was our last airshow. We haven't had any since...which is unfortunate. The Snowbirds were there as well as three special aircraft painted to celebrate some Anniversary or something.

Very cool stuff. 8)

Terry, do you know what the structure was?

I wish I did.  With its close proximity to the river, my first thought was grain storage/elevator, but that doesn't make sense with all the small openings...  If anyone has any thoughts as to what it is, please comment.

I would be crapping bricks if I were your passenger. Oh wait. I am mildly fearful of heights. Just flying would cause previously said bodily functions irrespective of daring landings on derelict buildings.  :D

:D Actually, I'm mildly fearful of heights also, and standing atop high precipices makes me nervous.  It doesn't bother me a bit in the helo though, especially when I'm piloting.

My passenger is a more seasoned pilot than I am, so he was comfortable.  I wouldn't do a maneuver like this with a newbie.

I agree Jerseydevil. It definitely is my favorite warbird design to-date.

Thanks NutSAK, Grathr.  :salute:

EDIT: I believe I used my Bigma...probably one of the best airshow lenses around. You can go normal at 50mm, and still get those close ups at the 500mm range.

Here are a few pics from when started to learn to fly gliders. Only managed to get aprox 5 hours stick time before I had to give it up because I simply did not have the time to continue.  :(

I know :)
The F5 was Norways main fighters until we got the F16.
I too have spent too much time looking up at fighters in the sky. One of my best holiday memories from my youth was when I spotted a F4 Phantom II flying over the beach in Greece.

Phantoms are neat too.  Growing up, the NJ Air National Guard was equipped with F-106's.  Those were very cool to look up and see.

I love the Sabre too!    :)

Here is another one that I like: the Northrop YB-49, which tried to kick the hell out of the invading Martians by dropping a nuke in George Pals' 'The War of the Worlds' (1953).    :D

Jack Northrop was certainly ahead of his time with the flying wing.  The YB-49 and the B-2 are almost identical dimension-wise.  1940's technology just couldn't produce flight controls that could keep those old designs stable in the air.  Edwards AFB was named for a pilot killed in a B-49 crash......

In one of Brian Cox's earlier series,in order to explain the layers of the earths atmosphere, they go to Thunder City in Cape Town.

Brain gets straped into the Lightning T-bird. A Hunter T-bird goes along as camera plane. They cruise along til the Lightning driver firewalls it,and pulls the nose up. IT JUST SMURFS OFF! I mean,I know it'll leave a Hunter for dead, but really!

Can't remember much else of the program, funnily enough!

Good eye John, that's an A-26 behind the Voodoo.  The 101's painted in active USAF colors.  The NJANG flew these instead of F-101's:

(http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/g448/Jerseydevil379/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140912_151326_zpsqmxl5s37.jpg) (http://s1102.photobucket.com/user/Jerseydevil379/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140912_151326_zpsqmxl5s37.jpg.html)

This F-106 is painted in Delaware ANG colors, though it was an NJ aircraft in service, one of the last actually.  The Jersey Guard was the last Delta Dart operator, retiring them in 1988.  The museum is on Dover AFB in Delaware, the Air Mobility Command museum. Lots of neat transports on display, and a C-17 took off while we were there!  I've got a ton of pics to post when I get home. :tu:

Great videos Millhouse, thanks!  :tu:  All four of those aircraft are classics.  I've seen P-51's, Huey's, and Hunters in flight, but never a Canberra.  The only Canberra I've ever seen close up was a Martin B-57 in a museum.  EE had such a good design there that the US built them under license.

It's a scary thought...if there's BUFFs still in service in 2046, that'll be one hundred years since the contract was first issued!

Saying that,at work the other day,one of our Romanians asked what the airplane(model) with three engines was. It was a KLM MD11,but he'd never heard of the Boeing 727.

Saying that, there's another kid(a Brit this time!) who didn't know there's a civilian version of the KC135. Talk about things that make you feel old

I got to see an RAF Airbus A400M today.  At first I only saw the tail, and thought it was a C17.  When I got closer, I noticed the props, and though "Wait a minute.....".  It's not too much smaller than the C17, and quite a bit bigger than a Herc.

Not my pic, but this shows the C17, Herc and A400M.

I have a strange phobia.  I like to fly in aircraft, but I am very nervous about being at heights (other than aircraft).  I've flown in commercial aircraft a lot in my life and never had an issue, however tall buildings, riding gondolas, suspension bridges and similar structures makes my knees go weak.  People tell me my phobia is a fear of falling.

I took an acrobatic fight in a Stearman aircraft (the red one) a few years ago.  It was a "white knuckle" ride, especially during loops and barrel rolls and my eyes were not open much during the stunts.  But I would do it again.  When we were not doing acrobatic stunts and flying level, it was a complete joy to fly.

Battlecruisers. :)  Their horizontal protection was inadequate, and their vertical protection also suffered in the attempt to gain more speed.  Hiei was basically sunk at close range by US cruisers at Guadalcanal.  Aircraft just delivered the coup de grace.

Great shots. :tu:  Such beautiful aircraft.  On a seperate note, I was reading something online last night about Jimmy Stewart's B-52 mission over Vietnam.  The crew put him on the radio during tanking, and there was one very confused boom operator on the other end.... >:D

Biggin Hill was a famous fighter station that played a major role in the Battle of Britain and, despite repeated attacks, remained operational throughout. On November 2nd, 1939, a squadron from Biggin Hill shot down the first enemy aircraft of WW2, a Dornier Do17. It is now an international airport and home to several warbirds owned and operated by the Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar, based at the airport.

I’ve been working near these for the past couple of days, interesting and poignant

Yesterday, a pair of WWII bombers flew into the local airport to commemorate Algoma Aviation Week. They will stick around until Sunday. I definitely did not want to miss this. Both are from the Commemorative Air Force stationed in the United States. From what I was told, they are big, and have a lot of planes in their fleet...most if not all are in flying condition. A B17G Flying Fortress and a B25J Mitchell bomber were the visitors. A nominal fee of 10 dollars got me onto the field. I took my little Nikon point and shoot camera along for the ride. Yeah, I did take plenty of photos.

One thing I have to say, I am shocked at the size of these bombers. This is the first time I got to see them up and personal and not on the TV or in a book. I had assumed they were larger. The B17 looks like a large bird, but inside, it is absolutely tiny. There were areas I couldn't reach because I was a big guy. I have no idea how people fit in these things let alone fight in them. Once I saw the belly turret, I had to :o. I can't imagine anyone fitting into that fighting space. Which added to my growing respect for their crew. It was quite an experience, and one well worth the tenner at the door.

Well enough of my jaw wagging...time for the photos.

B-25 Mitchell.

There was a little ladder under the plane that allowed me to get up. Well, there wasn't much room for me to get in as there wasn't any head room at all. I was forced to take photos at arms lenght to capture the interior. Talk about a sardine can.

Thought I'd post up a few pictures that were sent to me by a very good friend who is a professional photographer but did not take these pics. They were taken by a friend of his(also a photographer)who flew from California to Oshkosh and back in the plane in the first picture. The trip took approximately 9 days. There are a bunch of them but I will post only a few.

We had a surprise visit from three RAF Typhoons and their tanker today.  They were headed to California, but one was having problems refuelling in air, so they had to make a stop to have a look at it.  I chatted with the pilots and support crew for a bit, and they were some of the nicest guys I've met.  There were a couple of us that went down to check them out, and did a walk around with us.  It was pretty cool!! :tu:  We might have convinced them to put on a little show when they take off tomorrow too. :D

Impressive looking birds! What engines do they use? The tailpipes look a bit like J-79's.
Thought I'd post up some pics of a couple gatherings at the airport across the street from us. It is(or was)known as Meyers-Divers Airport as Meyers aircraft were built there starting in the 1930's.The last owner(who passed away a couple of years ago)was the son of the shop manager when the aircraft were being built. He used to host a reunion of Meyers aircraft every 5 years and the last one netted 34 craft which wasn't bad considering the lifetime production of ALL Meyers aircraft was only about 115.
Some of the pics will be of the reunion(the ones with the biplanes and the more modern aircraft)and others will be of a couple Memorial Day meets. The T-6's would do flyovers locally and refuel at the airport. The HU-16 was locally owned and was stored there after the city made the owner move it off his own private airstrip(too many noise complaints among other things).
It will probably take several posts so please bear with me.

Anytime, Baby!  Or: Darn Iranians!

I've been fascinated by military aircraft since my early childhood- back then, you could see quite a lot of them flying over Bavaria. (F4 Phantoms, Panavia Tornados, sometimes even F104 Starfighters from Italy, lots of A10 Warthogs, Mirages, Austrian Saab Draakens... interesting times!)

The only plane I never had the chance to see was (NOOOOOO!) the mighty F14 Tomcat.
I was literally collecting EVERYTHING related to the Grumman F14 (Posters, models, patches... you name it!) and my nickname still shows a deep affection for that huge bird.

A first blow was the retirement of all cats in 2006 (Thank you, Cheney, I always knew you were a Dick), too early for me to travel and see them.
The second blow came when Iranians tried to get spare parts for their rotting fleet of Tomcats (Yes, Iran still operates Tomcats...another interesting story).

As a result, most of the remaining Tomcats, stored in the desert, were simply destroyed, ripped apart and anihilated, so no one could get vital parts from them.

And, also bad for me, as a part-time aircraft-part collector, ALL parts of the Tomcat were banned from surplus stores and suchalike,
which menas I'll never get the chance to get my hands on even only a rivet of a real Tomcat. The only memorabilia you can get are keyring-fanblades of dubious origin  :-[

What a sad end for such a great plane!

Maybe, one day, I'll be as lucky as these guys in Ireland....

The same month as the USN retired the Turkey, the Royal Navy retired the Sea Harrier FA2. Seeing these legends being retired may have been the first time I truly started feeling old!

I do remember getting to sit in the cockpit of an almost-completed Turkey. :)  I've always had a soft spot for the F-14, as did Dominic. He always called it his "baby bird".  Grummans in general are loves of mine. I was born in Bethpage NY, like so many of their aircraft..... ;)

The F35s fly non stop around the clock out of Eglin. Our current house is actually getting new windows installed through the Base, because a jet broke one.

I love the sound of freedom, but breaking windows seems like a little too much.

Hm. Shouldn't that prop be, well, you know, turning?

Reminds me of this: you know the trick pilots use to remember what ETOPS means, right? It actually means Extended Twin engine OPerationS, i.e. a set of rules under which commercial flights can travel over stretches of ocean with nominally two engines, involving such things as distance to nearest airfield on one engine or while gliding and such. Each type of plane falls in one of a number of classes. To help some pilots remember, the story goes that the following phrase was coined:

 Engines Turn Or Passengers Swim

Hm. Shouldn't that prop be, well, you know, turning?
That was from training for an engine failure on a twin. The instructor will cause an engine to fail and you have to firstly control the aircraft on one engine ("asymmetric flying" as it wants to yaw toward the 'dead' engine), then feather the prop on the dead engine so it creates less drag (the prop shown is in the full fine position - it would normally look 'flatter' to the airflow), then restart the dead engine.
We also did whole circuits on one engine.

It was meant to be a career change rather than a hobby. I got a Commercial Pilot License and Flight Instructor Rating but couldn't find a job at the time so I need to do a bit of revision ($$$) to get back into it.

I’m honestly not sure. I see it at the airport here every now and then.

Went with a friend on a short flight today in a Piper Warrior.  It's warm and breezy here so we got bumped around quite a bit!

When fully loaded with ordnance, a Harrier cannot perform a vertical takeoff. On board a Tarawa-class ship, they had about 500 feet to get from a standing start to a speed sufficient enough that they wouldn't plunk into the ocean. USS Peleliu had a gym right below the forward end of the flight deck, and you could feel Harriers being launched when you were in there.

Aside from assisting with engine changes (which required removal of the wings), I never worked on Harriers much. But its awlways good to see them. I bet the flight in the Warrior, despite the bumps, was pretty fun, too! :tu:

I didn't know that Dan.  It makes sense though, loaded up.
Yes it was a good time!  I never minded getting bounced around a bit.  That platform is so stable you hardly notice it!
