Title: Raptor Club
Post by: Agonistes on January 23, 2014, 09:13:03 PM
i didn't see one, so i figured why not make my first thread?

technically i bought this for my s/o, who is an e.r. trauma nurse, and gets to go to work tonight and lord it over the other er folk.  but, i count myself in the club since i'll still get to maintenance and play with it, it's still in the family, as it were.

and as usual i apologize for my potato shots, which you have probably already seen, but what's a thread without pics?

in the near future, it's not an impossibility.  it evolved from Sock Puppet Theatre, so there is a lot of diversity among the cast.

After checking out the Raptor for a couple days. It sure is a interesting design. It will go in my kit. The sheath could be better. I'm not sure how at the moment. But it could be tweaked some. It's to top heavy for one thing. Over all it seems to be all right for my needs.     :)

Sweet Raptors David!! I really like that one on the left

The one on the left is a sweet one for sure. Has a great trigger and runs like a well tuned sports car. Unfortunatly it is not mine. I get to shoot it on occaition it belongs to a friend of my brothers. He was out to do some shooting. When I saw he had the Kimber Raptor II with him I thought the Leatherman and Kimber would make for a good pic.    :)

I got a opportunity to get a Raptor that I always wanted to try and took it.
It´s sweet. Love it so far. Only problem I can see is that one of the "blades" sometimes when handled wrong overtravel when opened or closed.(despite tightening the screw)
It´s already becoming visible on the speedbump that should hold it in place. Well it is no biggy.
Am I a paramedic that need it for work:absolutely not ! Am I a geek and need a pair of heavyduty scissors that look cool and are fun to play with. ! Oh yes !

I have had the Raptor since very early in its release and can honestly say I have possibly used it once if I remember correctly. I think I cut open a clamshell packaging with it. I am not saying it is a bad tool at all. I rather like the design and everything about it, but I just never really need it. Strangely I feel like I should not sell it as the second I do I will end up needing it for something.

Maybe my most disliked tool from Leatherman.
Only one that had issues but was fixed by warranty.
Only Leatherman that has bit me, twice actually. Maybe even three times.
I hate it can out turn so easily. The stopping pin should be much larger.
The plastic is cheap.
Its not that comfortable for my hands, bad actually.

Still its fun to own and play every now and then.
I don't hate it, it just has some really ugly things in it.

Also I'm pleased that Leatherman tried something new to them.
Also the limited edition colors look fantastic on Raptor.

Overall, I enjoy it as an item, and would not like to get rid of it.
But as medical shears it is a joke.

I've started a collection. There are six variations that I know of:

1. All black
2. Tan
3. Black and orange, exclusive to Cabela's
4. Red, exclusive to REI
5. Green, exclusive to Pacific Flyway Wholesalers, as far as I know only ever sold by Sportsman's Warehouse
6. All orange, claimed by Leatherman to have only ever been made in limited quantity as a pre-production samples, but claimed by others to have been available at Cabela's before a trademark claim was made bynFiskars over the orange handles

I have also heard from a Leatherman rep that there may have been a blue version, but only as pre-production samples.

So far I have only these three. The tan and the black/orange I can get any time, but I'm still desperately seeking an all-orange one, so if anyone has one or knows where I can find one, please let me know!

Hi guys!! I've loved the raptor since the 1st day they came out, but still haven't pulled the trigger... I'm not a paramedic, i'd use them for edc tasks and similar...Someone in the same situation? And above all, someone pushed it to the limit using it? What did you cut with it? Would be able to cut sheet metal, or maybe a wire fence using the ring cutter?

I know, should not of, especially concerning job hour changes... have a orange & black Raptor Rescue coming in. Used a 40% discount that was posted in another forum. So $60 isn't too bad.

So, given how freaking sharp these things are (got bit by one already) how do y'all keep them super sharp like the way Leatherman sends them out?? :ahhh

For its first use, and so far it has not bitten me, cut some skirting off the bottom of some plastic I put up on the veranda. Initially had stuffed the bottom end down through the lattice, and this left an odd skirting. Had scissors! A few snips and a zip across the main section and it looked bonzer! :D

When I first saw and handled one the bugger bit me. Am thinking the EMT had his sharpened someplace cause that bugger was sharper than a razer! :ahhh  Am curious how I can make mine even sharper than when it arrived from Leatherman because it was no where near as sharp as the EMT's was. Now I do have a Spyderco Triangle Sharpmaker with ceramic tri-stones. Never sharpened scissors with them before. What angle is needed for the Raptors?

I have a Raptor Response. I wouldn't say it is too bulky, but it is more noticeable than for example a Wave due to its odd shape and the fact that the pocket clip makes it sit higher (more accessible).

I tried to take some photos for comparison, and pocket clip over regular jeans.

Glad I could help! It is definitely the best shears I have used, and extra functionality is always welcome. I have yet to try the ring cutter though.

Ever since I landed on the Raptor Response I have been curious to how it compares to the Raptor Rescue. But already owning a Raptor, I couldn't justify purchasing another one. However, I found this unbranded clone online for $20 and figured I'd give it a try. You know, for science.

I believe it is 1:1 to the proper Raptor Rescue, but the build quality and action is really bad. It cuts surprisingly well though, so I might keep it in my car as a spare.

The Raptor might be a pricy set of shears, but you really do get what you pay for. The quality of Leatherman has never disappointed me. Please forgive me for shopping from our foe.

They look like a very accurate copy Nakken!

I think if anyone could justify having more than one set, it’s you. Black and orange, maybe?

Keeping a pair in the car definitely sounds good.

Imagine if the green ones glowed!

I know there have been special editions that do, but I don’t think it’d really add much to the production cost and could even be used as a security feature, like a watermark.

:iagree: That would have been great. I absolutely love my stayglow RescueTool (https://i.ibb.co/kmsCXRx/ezgif-3-a392bb85b3.gif)

Both the limited editions (Orchid and Aqua) are showing out of stock on Leatherman.co.uk at the moment.

I wonder if new colours are on the way or if it’s just a stock issue.

Interesting. I would imagine that the Raptor doesn't sell that much, being a specialized tool and all. Good thing you secured the Orchid :D

I reckon it sells pretty well.

If you want a plier based multitool, you buy a Wave, or a Surge, or a Rebar, or a Bond, or a Charge, or a Supertool, or even a Gerber.

If you want folding shears, you buy a Raptor.

The Orchid one is my wife’s. I bought a black and orange pair through a Facebook group, but when I opened the package, they’d turned tan  ???

Seriously considering getting either black and orange or green to carry, then fixing the tan somewhere in reach in the car.

Let me clarify, I am sure it sells well. But not compared to e.g the Wave. A specialized tool isn't for everybody, a plier based tool is (mostly). Meaning the market for a Raptor is smaller than for the Surge.

I'm not sure if this made any sense. I love the Raptor. The black and orange ones looks great indeed! :tu:

For what they cost, I think it’s worth buying a Raptor just to keep in your car for emergencies.

If you find other uses for then once you’ve got them (and you probably will), even better.

They’re great for garden, kitchen, craft, and general use, and handy for a vehicle or first aid kit too.

You also get to laugh at people who say Surge scissors are the best Leatherman make.

When I saw the new black and coyote tan tease in the email, I was expecting black oxide shears like their other coyote tan tools.  It's just to different colors on the grips.  I am completely disappointed, but I guess that saves me $100.  Haha

I found a picture on the site of a US retailer that showed the two releases today, as well as a black and red model and a green and blue model, due in August.
It also shows the single colour green, blue, red, and tan models as being discontinued soon.

I’d quite like a non-limited edition glow in the dark model, or a few new colours of Raptor Response to choose from.

These “new” colors are pretty disappointing. I wish they would make a solid orange as opposed to orange and black.  I’m not a fan of the two tone Raptors.

I got my wife an Aqua one because it matches her company colours, and they look really good.

I think green and orange might work, especially if the green glowed.

I think a glow in the dark model the is a great idea!  I can tell you there's nothing that hides better at 3 am than a stock color tool

I'm probably the last to notice, but there are lots of Raptor knockoffs on Amazon, and some of them are even called Raptors.

I bought one of these back in January (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,49813.msg2394085.html#msg2394085). Surprisingly accurate, but the action and poor build quality is a dead giveaway.
It cuts well though :ns:

I've never chimed in. I've got two Raptors, lost the one Grant gave me so bought another, then found the lost one. I'm going to edc one even though I'm not a first response person. Want to see how useful it could be in an everyday situation.

I honestly don't see why this has to be for EMT only. Scissors are heavy duty, zip ties, heavy materials and other things won't stand a chance. The seatbelt cutter would be good for things we use the guthook for on the charge series, tons of uses. And the ring cutter could do some things, not sure yet but the possibility is there.
