Title: Favorite Matches!
Post by: Poncho65 on December 31, 2016, 04:52:06 PM
Hey guys just wondering what is everyone's favorite matches :tu:

I like a few different types but my favorite two are probably the UCO Stormproof matches (just cause they are so cool  8) :D )  and the Strike Anywhere ones from Diamond :dd:

I will get a couple pics up later but if you have any favorite matches let us about them and why you like them :tu: Pics are very much welcome :D

I often just use the Bird wooden matches, as they are the easiest to get a hold of, but I really want to try some different ones and see what might be better.  They aren't water or wind proof, and I often end up using some better ones.

Strike anywhere matches are hard to find.  I have some Coleman water proof matches but they are water resistant at best.

I like the looks of those UCO matches as well.  I actually only have lighters now.  I've abandoned matches all together.

I prefer matches for lighting camp stoves and camp fires.  Not that it can't be done with lighters, I just have always used matches for that kind of thing.

I went the opposite way.  I now use the long reach lighters for my Coleman stoves.

I have done that from time to time too, but I prefer matches, especially for the Bio Lite stove, which burns wood anyway.

There is a hardware store I got to that sells them and they are as cheap as strike on box matches :o I usually buy the kitchen matches as I like that size better

I haven't tried any water proof matches except for the UCO and those are almost impossible to put out once lit :dd: Even sticking them in a cup of water only dampens the flame but once you take it out it relights itself :o :like: :like:

They are the most common wood match here.  I see them almost everywhere, which is why those are the ones I usually get.  It's availability, not brand loyalty.

They light well enough.  Occasionally one won't light or one will break or they will go out as soon as the head is burnt, but I don't think they are any better or worse than any other plain old every day wood match you get.

The go to brand here in Sweden is Solstickan, they are a charity that generates their money from the sales of matches. I also have an old box of matches from Jönköping-Vulcan, once the largest match-factory in the world. Sweden has traditionally been a major country when it comes to matches with Ivar Kreuger as the main man negotiating match monopolies around the world in exchange for loans to the local governments.

The absolute best matches I've ever had are strike anywhere Swan Vestas. I've only found them once in a Tobacconist's shop after reading they were a cult item among pipe and cigar smokers. The heads are pink because they mix the compounds together instead of tipping the head. The box equipped with a sandpaper surface rather than a common striking strip.

Another favorite is the Coghlan's Waterproof Safety matches in the wooden sleeve box. I call them "Greenies"...but the last pack I bought have brown heads, so I guess I'll have to start calling them "Brownies"  ::)

I like the Coleman Waterproof matches...the boxes they come in are made of a durable plastic coated cardboard.

There's a lot of matchsafes...but Nalgene bottles are cheap and bombproof. If you have a reliable source of SA kitchen matches (like those Redbirds) all you need is a spot of skateboard tape for striking...our current Diamond brand SA matches really suck.

The 1 oz Nalgene widemouth will hold kitchen matches without trimming...the 2 oz will hold REI Storm matches

(bonus pic of old school matchsafe I used for many years  :D )

Totally ignoring Spork's advice above, I decided to pick up the UCO Titan matchsafe yesterday.  I was in MEC looking for something else when I came across it and thought "hey, I should grab that."

So I did.

https://www.mec.ca/en/product/5046-826/Titan-Stormproof-Match-Kit

So far it has kept the matches clean and dry, but considering that it hasn't been outside the house since I brought it home, that doesn't seem like a major accomplishment.   ::)

We'll see what it's like this year in the kayak.

I guess I will just keep carrying the Redbirds in my cooking kit with my pots and pans.  I will probably pick up one of the travel bottles like you suggested sooner or later- they just weren't directly in front of me the other day!  :D

It's a "safety" thing.  Less likely to get lit accidentally.  They must be the same cost to make, they just put half the chemicals on the "sandpaper" instead of putting them on the match head.

I initially heard that it was because they were used for Meth production...actually it is the red phosphorus on the striker strip, so that was partly untrue because it could be scraped of from book matches.

I think it is actually because the hazardous material classification for them changed and fewer stores are willing to stock them. Around here I can only find Diamond brand SA's in a local builder's supply chain...in the past you could find them in any grocery or drug store.

I've been carrying the Redbird Strike anywhere matches - same as the ones shown by Grant.  They are definitely strike anywhere - I just tried them.  I bought a couple of boxes two or three years ago and as I recall they were available in the larger grocery stores and hardware stores. (Western Canada).

I also bought a waterproof case with uco matches - they are very impressive.  The ones I have aren't strike anywhere so one needs the strip they come with for lighting.

I have a couple of these with strike anywhere matches:
https://www.mec.ca/en/product/0199-158/Match-Case

Also have one of these:
http://www.leevalley.com/en/garden/page.aspx?p=65241&cat=2,40725,45454
The strike anywhere matches don't work that well on the rough area in my experience.

I also carry one or two cheap lighters just in case.

Using the small nalgene bottles for match holders is an excellent idea.

John.

When I use matches I generally use Diamond safety kitchen matches because the strike anywheres you can get around here are junk and the Swan Vestas or Three Stars matches are a bit pricey for me.
That said, I usually reach for a lighter. A Bic is reliable in a kit for more uses than a comparably sized stash of susceptible to soaking matches, and a Zippo lights my pipe in the wind with a minimum of muss or fuss. Matches are a luxury usually saved for those rare occasions that I find myself in a tobacconist's lounge with no wind to blow my match out and an ashtray close to hand in which I may safely toss my partially burnt match splints.

Even then, I usually use a Zippo simply because I usually have one on me, where I don't typically carry matches.

You can taste the fluid for the first couple puffs, but it doesn't taint the whole bowl, and it's no worse than the flavor of butane (which I can taste, those who claim they can't be darned). I don't mind having to deal with a slight fluid taste for a few draws in exchange with actually being able to light my pipe outdoors without having to fight to keep the flame going in a stiff breeze like I do with matches or most (soft flame, no torches on nice pipes) butane lighters. Others differ, and that's fine. Different strokes for different folks.

I have a small collection of Zippos, the one I carry most is nothing even a wee bit special, a bone stock 1941 replica in brushed chrome. Love the way it feels in my hands.

I dont recall what brand storm matches these are but they are pretty darn good.  I like to keep the "tinder quick" fire things just to be extra certain I'll have a fire when or if I need one.  The metal container is something I found and is perfectly water proof.  The plastic container is an asprin container.  I'm not so sure its completely water tight.

Also what Zippo or Zippos do you have :D I have a few myself just because I like fire ::) :D

Yeah ish but in the real world, leave it to burn a second and just use it. I've tried lighting a pipe with a UCO Stormproof match and boy was that nasty!

It's the gases it releases. They are nasty and stick in the tobacco all the way through the pipe.

If you have some cash to splash and want a fancy metal match safe, K&M makes a really nice one. I want one, but I use matches so rarely that it's not worth spending the money on it.

A non screw cap would be a deal breaker for me.  The plastic one I showed is one I keep in a zip lock bag.  The metal one I dont.  I submerged it in water for a few hours and it remained dry inside.  I did add some epoxy to the screws at the top just to be certain.  I wouldn't trust the plastic one but the metal one I have no doubts on.

A long enough toothpick holder can do the job.  If a little of the wooded stick needed to be trimmed I dont have a problem with that.  Its not like I'm going to be holding the match the whole time.  I also add the tinder that is a great help when you have marginal tinder.  The match and tinder go up like crazy.

I’ll always try a cheap BIC first, but those stormproof matches are a miracle :tu:

Nothing to add except I use the Redbird too, they're available around here everywhere basic camping supplies are sold, I keep them stored in this waterproof container, and although they claim strike anywhere its not always true, so I cut a strip of the striker off the box and keep it in the container, the container is either a Coleman or coughlans and is also available everywhere around here

I like a few different types but my favorite two are probably the UCO Stormproof matches (just cause they are so cool  8) :D )  and the Strike Anywhere ones from Diamond :dd:

I really like the UCO's. I have some Diamond strike-anywhere matches stashed away, too. However, I don't think the newer Diamonds are as good as the old ones.

Lately, I've been carrying a book of paper matches.

These are out of a US MRE pack.

I used to be a wooden match fan, but I've come to appreciate some of the advantages of paper matches: I like that they are easy to pack and carry and they are less prone to breakage.

When my hands get cold, really cold, my fingers don't work as well. So, it may be easy to snap a wooden match. That's a non-issue with paper matches. I don't think paper matches burn quite as hot as wooden matches, but I've never had a problem getting a fire going with the paper variety either.

I don't think there is an advantage one way or another here, but it's easy to securely grab a paper match with forceps or pliers (multitool) to reach the match into a small space or recessed spot, if they seem a bit short.

Having said all that, it's hard to beat the fierce and sustained flame of a hurricane or stormproof match.  :tu:

I've known of a couple of tobacconists that still offer free matches with a purchase. Been to one of them, stupidly said "oh ive got a lighter" instead of just taking the free firestarters.
It's usually the nicer places, not the discount cigarette and dip joints, that have matches available. Especially if they have a focus on pipes- there are a LOT of pipe smokers that absolutely refuse to light their tobacco with anything but an old fashioned wooden match or a cedar splint/spill. Some cigar smokers are the same way, but fewer than pipers.
Title: Re: Favorite Matches!

Sounds good!

I messed around with a pipe for a little while, always used a wooden match. Never tried a cedar splint....because I hadn't encountered the idea.
Title: Re: Favorite Matches!
Post by: thatotherguy on January 18, 2019, 02:38:17 AM
A cedar splint is just a thin piece of Spanish cedar wood that you light with another source of flame in order to then light your tobacco. Think a longer matchstick made of cedar. A spill is basically the same thing, but instead of a long matchstick, it's like a narrow piece of cedar veneer about 5 inches long by around half an inch to an inch wide. The idea is that you light the tobacco with something that has zero chemicals, hydrocarbons, or really anything but wood, so it will produce a "purer" or "cleaner" flame that imparts no unpleasant flavors to your tobacco, just a slight and pleasant flavor of aromatic cedar. It's more common for cigar smokers than pipers- those who smoke a pipe are much more likely to use matches instead of cedar, even the "purists"- but some pipers do choose to use them. They aren't all that common with cigar smokers either, for that matter. Most use a butane torch for cigars.

I am not one of those that use cedar splints or spills- i don't see the point when I don't mind the flavor of a Zippo light.

I'm not sure what matches these are--probably Diamond strike anywhere--but this is my favorite match safe:

It's brass with a black coating, the top screws down tight with an o-ring seal. It holds 20 matches. It's effectively crush proof and weather proof. I've submerged it in a bowl of water overnight with no evidence of leaking. I don't use integral button compass, but it's nice to have it as a back-up. The lanyard is useful when using the compass and cinches down to prevent the loss of the cap. The underside of the cap is rough enough to use as a striker for 'strike anywhere' matches.

The major drawback to this safe is its weight. Solid brass doesn't come without a weight cost. Plastic match safes are lighter and probably just as strong, but there is something I find reassuring about this brass thing.

Rumaged around in my camping gear to find some old favorites:

Top to bottom:

Coghlan's Wind and Waterproof matches. These work very well, and I like the small box for packing in backpacking gear, typically in a ziplock bag.

Davis Instruments Hurricane Match. I forgot I had these not sure how they worked, but obviously I kept some. I'm not sure these are made any longer........

Diamond Strike Anywhere matches. Put these in for comparison.

REI Stormproof matches. These are really good. They look and act exactly like the UCO matches, and I bet they are made by UCO. I usually refill my UCO match safe with these.

It's snowing fairly heavily out at the moment. I went outside and fired off an REI Stormproof just for fun. Big flakes were falling and landing on the match, but to no real effect. The match just burnt like a road flare.  :tu:

As far as match safes go, I just use those cheapo orange ones with the rubber o ring :tu:

For UCO matches, I trim the stick a little to fit them in

And I’ll cut out strikers from matchboxes to put in the containers.

A few more match safes:

Top row, left to right:

This small stainless steel match safe is interesting in that the cap unscrews, but is attached at the bottom so it can't be lost. I find it a bit awkward to use. I stuff a bit of cotton in the lid to keep the matches from shaking around. There is a rubber gasket in the lid, but I'm never sure this match safe is really waterproof. Still, it works and the knurled surface is great for striking 'strike anywhere' matches.

This brass safe is similar to the one I posted above. It does not screw down, but depends on a set of double o-rings to keep the lid on and water out. The lanyard also keeps the top locked down if it's cinched up. Unfortunately the compass in the top is 180º out of true. I don't know how this happened. Because of the messed up compass, this match safe is just a relic.

The bright green match safe is the same idea, but made of aluminum. Lighter than the brass versions which is excellent. This one has a Suunto compass in the top, but it has developed a medium sized bubble. The compass still points North reliably, but the bubble makes me doubt it's accuracy a bit. Still, a nice match safe.

Bottom row:

Orange UCO match safe. Big safe, but you get quite a few stormproof matches. The lid on this one is cracked, though.... (see below for details).

Orange plastic match safe. Simple and reliable. An o-ring keeps it waterproof. Hard to beat this light weight safe.

OD plastic (Army surplus?). Same as the orange one next to it. This has the advantage of have a tethered lid. I carried this one in a small emergency kit during hunting season.

UCO safe fail:

The UCO safe has developed a nasty crack. I'm not sure how. Possibly some idiot over-torqued the lid, but since I'm the only one who has used this match safe, that doesn't seem likely.

The safe still hold matches and a spare striker pad.....but it is no longer waterproof.  So, for you guys who like UCO matches, be careful with the match safe. Or use REI matches in a box and just keep the box in a plastic bag.  You have been warned.     :police:

AS TESTED the UCOs seemed to be a bit "better".

The Zippo case is nice.  Easy work around for the exterior striker on the UCO case.  What I think I am seeing is the Zippo match has a longer area of material to burn while the UCO has thicker material.   :dunno:.  I think either will do well for what they are.  A little shake of the match when submerged introduces some oxygen and the match relights.   Instead of submerge, remove,  and wait for the match to relight.  Simple adjustment on using and the Zippos appear to be a nice match.

I do like the Zippo match safe.

Great post, Poncho.   :like:

I've been thinking since you started this thread. The humble match we now take for granted must have transformed fire making when it was developed in the 1800's.  Before that most methods were tedious and somewhat unreliable. Then along came the match.

While matches must have seemed nearly magical, it's interesting to note that in the 1908 version of Jack London's "To Build a Fire", the main character perishes despite having matches. He fails to take advantage of this precious resource, squandering his pack of matches in a last desperate...and failed...attempt to get his fire going.

Hum... i do happen to have a $5 amazon credit from bing rewards I've got no plans for... and i just sold a knife i got as a gift a couple years back and never used...

Let's see if i can enable myself enough to pull the trigger on one. Basically already there, but can't decide between the gunmetal and orange variants.

Orange is a big plus for visibility in the boonies but gunmetal fits my usual style a bit better, so it's six of one and half a dozen of the other at this point.

Who knows, if I get one and end up liking it as much as I think I will, I might just end up with both of them...

Those look almost identical to the "Royal Navy surplus" UK-made lifeboat survival kit matches I used to see all over the place, plus the Coghlan branding. Maybe they're made by the same contractor. Neat!

I am glad that this thread got bumped as I have a few things to add to it.  First off, some of Spork's favorites:

Over the summer I bought a used kayak and it included some extras, like a paddle and dry bag.  The paddle was donated to my nephews' use as they are hard on things and I don't like aluminum shafted paddles, and inside the dry bag was this brand new pack of Coughlin's waterproof matches, or "greenies." :D

I haven't used any of them yet, although I did notice there are a few doubles in there, so there may be about 5% fewer matches in there than expected!  Still, the pack seems as full as a pack can get, so I'm happy, especially since they were an added bonus I wasn't expecting.

Next up are some of my regular matches from Redbird.

I keep them in an old prescription bottle with a spare striker from one of my UCO kits.  The setup isn't waterproof, and neither are the matches, but they keep dry enough inside the bottle, inside a pack.

They aren't anything special, they are just one of the most commonly available wood match brands here, and they are dirt cheap, so I can strike half of the pill bottle at once to get a decent flame if needed.  I think a box of 500 is something like $5, so pretty affordable.  (EDIT: The price has apparently gone up.... https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/redbird-matches-2-pk-0761902p.html#srp although I am certain they can be gotten cheaper elsewhere) I can replenish this pill bottle (or make many of them) or less than a bottle of Pepsi, so it makes sense to have them everywhere.  And, my parents have enough prescription bottles left over to feed an army.

And speaking of my parents and armies....

My father gave me this little gem the last time I visited him.  It is a Canadian Armed Forces issue match safe, complete with 50+ year old matches.

The case is thin aluminum with a screw on top, and I have no idea what the label used to say.  There's not enough of it let to guess.

It has five bags in it, one with strikers, three which have six matches in them, and one was opened and one match has been used.  The rest are all original- I think Dad found them to be a bit overkill for lighting cigarettes and put them away for when he needed them... then either never needed them, or didn't have them handy when he did!

They appear to be windproof matches, and possibly also waterproof, or at least may have been at one point.  They are similar to the modern UCO matches, only a lot smaller.  They are also over 50 years old, and I am not sure if that means they won't work, or if they will explode in a bit of a fireball.  One of these days I will get brave enough to try one!

Here's a comparison of all three:

One of these days I will toss the pill bottle in some water (after taking the matches out!) to see how waterproof it is.  I think it is only good for keeping rain or the occasional splash out, and so far that has been good enough.  I'd probably stick to the UCO ones for kayaking trips though.

Boss, those old matches are really neat.  They certainly look like the UCO matches albeit smaller.  The need for a wind/water proof match has been around for a while.  That match safe is really neat and more so that it was your dads.   I'd be inclined to light one match just to see how/if it would light.

I fully intend to... I'm just not sure what would happen.  Do the chemicals degrade over time?  If so, do they get more or less flammable?  Is the wood so dry that it will burn super quick?

Could be fun....  :ahhh

I can't comment on a timeline of colors on the Coughlan's matches.  Maybe Spork will be able to shed some light on it.

That leads me to believe that the green ones predate the brown ones, but I am not sure where in the mix pink ones may be.

And yes, the plastic coated cardboard is very cool.  :D

Ponch- if you really like the Redbird box art I can send you a box if you like.  Probably just the box though, as I imagine the PO would be very upset at the idea of mailing matches....  :ahhh

Grant, the vintage aluminum match tin is awesome! :ahhh

Match TIMEX is an interesting question. I am sure the chemicals would degrade and fail to light, rather than go in the opposite direction and become less stable and explode. Could not find anything definitive, but this short post here https://blog.cheaperthandirt.com/quick-prepper-tip-playing-fire/ (https://blog.cheaperthandirt.com/quick-prepper-tip-playing-fire/)

"...Although most boxes are not marked with an expiration date, matches do get old and can loose their ability to light. Good matches are bright red in color (think Santa’s suit) if the color is more along the lines of burgundy or dull red these are typically older matches. Matches do come in other colors but red is most common."

For lifespan, I found someone who said that he had "...matches from my parents' wedding that were still working after 55 years." https://www.reddit.com/r/NoStupidQuestions/comments/4wn3g4/how_long_do_bar_matches_fire_producing_ones_that/ (https://www.reddit.com/r/NoStupidQuestions/comments/4wn3g4/how_long_do_bar_matches_fire_producing_ones_that/)

So Grant, you have to try one of those old matches and let us know - just have a fire extinguisher nearby  :D

Something fundamentally attractive about the simple match - great thread.

Great read...some real jewels:

“...This marvelous thing was formerly called a "light-bringing slave", but afterward when it became an article of commerce its name was changed to 'fire inch-stick'...”

and also that early matches were “...ignited by dipping its tip in a small asbestos bottle filled with sulfuric acid.”

“...Lucifers could ignite explosively, sometimes throwing sparks a considerable distance...”  >:D

“...there was enough white phosphorus in one pack to kill a person. Deaths and suicides from eating the heads of matches became frequent.”  :o

The early matches were certainly hazardous. No wonder today’s versions are called ‘safety matches’  :)

Such a fascinating history for such a tiny marvel.

Those are indeed very neat!

I had a similar idea a little while ago- I have two large dogs, and since I am a responsible adult (as far as my dogs are concerned anyway!) I pick up their poop.  In the center of these poop bag rolls is a small cardboard tube, and I end up with a lot of them in my pockets as I never seem to remember to throw them out.  One day I was looking at them and thinking that if I filled each one with a bit of paraffin and some dryer lint, and stuck a match in the end, I'd probably have a pretty darned good survival match.

Now that we are all talking about it, maybe I will have to look into it a bit more.  :D

Here are a couple of the poop bag cardboard rolls and the Redbird matches.  I can fit three matches inside the cardboard tube, which would really give it a heck of a kick off, although I am not sure how much paraffin and lint I'd get in there with three of them.  Maybe two would be enough?

Sounds like it may be time to start the Great Flaming Poop Bag Experiment of 2019!   :ahhh

Sounds like an excellent project Grant - let us know how it goes. You may need a way to store the incendiary to prevent the paraffin evaporating.  ???

Just make sure the used poop bags are well separated from the incendiaries when you test them

I didn't know paraffin evaporated?  My plan was to mix some paraffin and lint (or sawdust, or some combination of the two) together until it became a truly sticky, disgusting mess, then pour it into the tube and stick a couple of matches in before it solidified.  Then dip the head of the match in some paraffin for waterproofing and let the whole thing set.  I figure then when I need it I can just strike the match through the paraffin and the whole thing should burn for a while.

Of course, there's an awful lot in that plan that can go horribly wrong, so it should be interesting.  :D

Maybe small bubbles of diesel or something in the middle would keep things interesting!   >:D

You will need to scrape the paraffin off, first. Otherwise the paraffin gums up the striker and/or prevents 'strike anywhere' from developing enough friction to ignite (before the head gets rubbed off).

Ask me how I know..... :-\

Only slowly at ambient temperatures, but if you leave your incendiaries in a hot car or back pack it will.

I was rummaging through some fishing gear and found these:

"Matches Waterproof, Safety Mk 2"

I guess I had these in some field kit at some point. They have to be at least 20 years old...25 years-old would be a better bet. The striker patches are mount on the exterior of the lid top and container base. You can see the cap is cracked, the label has peeled off, and the lid doesn't seal very well.

I took one out and fired it right up, one strike.

Title: Re: Favorite Matches!
Post by: Nix on January 23, 2019, 07:42:56 PM
This thread prompted me to try something out that I’ve been putting off for a while.

Paper matches have many useful virtues, but they are prone to dampness and getting wet. I’ve had matches that were paraffin coated in order to improve their weather/climate resilience, but books of paper matches have become harder to find.

The exception being, Diamond’s green tipped paper matches.

So I thought I’d test out paraffin coating a book of green tip matches and reporting my findings here.

Fresh book of Diamond Green tips. These have been stored in a cool dry place and kept in a zip top bag.

First thing: If the striker gets gummed up with paraffin, the matches won’t strike, so I covered the striker with gaffer tape to keep it paraffin-free.

Next I dunked the entire book of matches into melted paraffin:

The matches were left to dry.

Once the tape was removed, the striker looked good. I used the pen blade of my SAK to clean off as much paraffin as I could, and then attempted to fire up the green tip:

FAIL.

The match seemed to strike and fire, but then just smoldered. I suspected that some residual paraffin had melted and smothered the match.

So, I tried scraping the match head more thoroughly.

FAIL.

…..and another FAIL.

Just to test the striker. I lit an uncoated match with the coated matchbook’s striker.

No problems (see match above, second from bottom).

I then tested a paraffin-coated red-tipped wooden match on the coated matchbook’s striker (after scraping the paraffin of the red tip).

It fired up, all be it with a slight sputter, initially (see bottom-most match in photo above).

So, for whatever reason, Diamond’s green-tip paper matches are not amenable to being paraffin coated in my opinion.

I labeled the MTo Hack #1 because I though I might try a separate ‘hack’ by just coating the match heads. However, since coating the green-tip match heads proved to be a disaster, I won’t be testing the green-tips further, aside from normal use.

I will say, as they come, green tips have worked well for me.

Great test review Nix  :like:

How about using an alternative water-proofing material such as a silicone spray or even a non-stick cooking spray?
Title: Re: Favorite Matches!
Post by: Nix on January 23, 2019, 11:18:00 PM
Based on these results, I suspect that a spray coating would similarly stifle the match's ability to burn. And might gum up the striker.  But....until it's tested, I suppose it's possible.

I have some PAM cooking spray, but that contains lecithin. Lecithin can act as an emulsifier and bind with water. With that in mind, I think Pam cooking spray would be a doubtful choice. I don't know if other cooking sprays might have similar issues.

I don't think I have any silicone spray. That might be worth testing.

Great test, Nix :like: and to bad it failed :( but we learned that it doesn't work so that is good :tu: silicon spray might work and I will see if I can think of any other type of coating that might make them waterproof

This guy makes Strike Anywhere and waterproof matches  He uses kid cap gun disks and a MT (yes a MT :D ) to make them Strike Anywhere and then dips them in wax to make them waterproof :like: Just be careful not to pop the caps while gathering material though

I have to wonder if caps are not harder to find these days than matches?

Also, you'd get a decent spark from a cap itself, why not just try lighting tinder with a cap?

Bees' wax can be sticky. I'm not sure that is going to be viable. Remember, you have to be able to scrape the protective layer of the head so it can generate friction with the striker.

It would smell better, though.

Nail polish?

Extra points for thinking outside the box. I'm highly skeptical.

Is the plan to paint each match with a protective coating of "Romance Red"? And then scrape it off before using? I don't know.....that polish is pretty adherent stuff once it dries.

If dried nail polish were flammable, I suspect many cosmetically-oriented people would end up with burning fingers when engaged in routine activities like cooking, smoking , or using flamethrowers. Burning fingernails probably causes cancer in California, so that might be a downside, too.

Remember here: the paraffin trick did work with red tip, wooden matches. I just couldn't get it to work for me with green tip matches. That suggests that before using this trick, it would be a good idea to test it out on which ever matches you prefer.

Earlier in this thread I posted a picture of my old brass match safe, the one with the compass that went 180º out of true.

I realized that I really liked that match safe and decided to replace it. To my delight, I found that K&M is still making match safes. Link:

(https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1883/6497/products/MG_0812_1000x.jpg?v=1533852539) (https://www.kmmatchcase.com)

Now, they aren't cheap, and my old compass did have a problem, but K&M seems to be using a new compass now. And these are heirloom quality matchcases that are neigh indestructible. So I splurged....

Filled the case with a dozen REI Stormproof matches and a striker.  Now need to take it on a hike to justify the expense.....

I got out and decided to burn some stuff today :D I have had a pile of scrap wood in the backyard waiting to be burnt for a while now and with nothing else pressing to do, I thought it would be a good time to try some different matches out

I actually used the UCO Sweetfire matches to start the fire but forgot to take pics of those  but I did get to test out the UCO Titan Stormproof matches and the Zippo Typoon matches out :tu:

I struck each and lit some cardboard on fire and they both lit the cardboard fine :salute: but I lit both at the same time and the UCO being shorter with the coating even, burned longer than the Zippo ones :dunno: then I lit each individually again and tried to blow them out, the Zippo was able to be blown out but would automatically relight  the UCO on the other hand has a stronger flame just by looks and was not able to be blown out at all :tu: so my conclusion is the same as most others I have seen online, that the UCOs are better and if you have the chance buy those  the Zippos are no slouch and will work fine but the UCO ones are just a bit better

On the matter of the Sweetfires, I lit it on first strike and put it with some paper under the wood and the result was very good :tu: they burn for several (package says 7) minutes and dried out the wood enough for it to catch fire and burn :like:

1. The unpackaged Matchcap in its unnatural habitat.
2. Filled up with 20 standard kitchen matches, which fit comfortably. Bonus shot of ugly fingers complete with terrible cuticles.
3. With a standard kitchen match for scale, side.
4. Match for scale, diameter, ugly fingers. Diameter is roughly that of a U.S. nickel.
The little baggie of extras that come with it consist of one extra o-ring, 3 extra phosphorus striker pads, and one extra sandpaper striker pad for the bottom. There's ample room for kitchen matches and a bit of cotton for tinder, if you please, and should be able to fit stormproof matches too. Machining and threads are exceptionally clean, O-ring came dry (easy to fix with a spot of silicone grease or chapstick). Extras baggie is small enough to be stuffed into the bottom of the case for safekeeping.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190129/a0f52a65b2cdc1983c611ff88d79a8a2.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190129/12857bb524b453518b20c14d7adfd04b.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190129/b042e50b9f1e7b3635f37b1f7e6adb81.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190129/0b9ffcbdeea94c30a33127caa495ee54.jpg)

Is there a way to attach the cap to the base with a lanyard?
I was just thinking about that and I don't think there's a great way to do it. However, the knurling on the bottom is very aggressive so one may be able to tie a little turk's head bight with some cord and attach the pieces that way. I wouldn't be terribly confident with its staying power, though.

Also, the tolerances on the cap are pretty tight (relatively speaking, it's not finished like a Rolex by any means but it is better than I expected it to be) , and the O-ring is a snug fit in the cap. It would probably take some doing to accidentally lose the cap in a pack, and if you're using the case, I guess you have to stick the cap in your pocket or hold it in your match hand

I'll make sure to keep you all informed about any findings I make in use. I'm hard on my gear, so if there's a materials or engineering issue, I'll find it... i sincerely doubt there will be, though. 6061 aluminum is pretty reliable, the ano looks like it was done pretty well, and the machining is clean enough that I dont foresee any issues.

Something that could last for years and protect the matches. Depending how humid your climate is, you could throw a few rice grains in to help absorb any residual moisture that could get trapped inside?

My pleasure.

Initial thoughts are very positive. I like the quality and overall form factor of this case considerably more than the Marbles match safe and US military surplus plastic safe it replaced. Only benefit the Marbles has over it, aside from aesthetics which are subjective, is the captured cap of the Marbles. In order to lose that cap, you have to lose the whole safe. However, I've never had a problem keeping up with the cap on the surplus safe, so it's far from a big deal. I like the integrated striker design a lot and think it will work well for normal use, though I will probably end up carrying a backup striker in the chamber as well (as I do with all of my other safes) simply because I don't like the idea of having to rely on the wee little one alone in a pinch.

Have you all heard about the old sportsman's field expedient match safe? A spent 12ga and 20ga shell will nest together and render matches rainproof in a hunting vest. I believe a 10ga and 12ga will also nest for a little bit larger safe. Plastic shell hulls are super light as well, and the expanded crimping at the head of each shell gives the nested hulls enough friction to stay together OK.

Seems like it would be better than nothing. Which begs the question: what is the hunter doing with matches and no match safe?

Honestly, most hunters I know (self included) dont carry matches in the first place. You'll usually find a Bic or cheap Bicalike in their kit. I think the old spent shells trick is somewhat a relic of the past, perhaps dating from the Depression era when you had to make do with what you had. I'd bet a lot of those cases were made out of shells guys found littering the ground.

Ninja edit: maybe they were most common with a 12 and 16 ga shell nested? The Sweet Sixteen was pretty popular around the turn of the last century, if memory serves. Shells would have been pretty easy to find.

Alrighty, laddies and germs, the Matchcap has gotten its first use. I like it. I like it a lot. However, I disagree that the proper way to strike the match is from the opening towards the o-ring as Exotac recommends. I popped the heads off two matches doing that- the follow through hit the head of the match on the little ledge under the striker and above the o-ring and popped it right off. I prefer striking the match at around a 45 degree angle towards yourself, which gives you ample striking surface to ignite the head and plenty of room to follow through, plus easy ability to provide shielding from the wind. Will update if anything changes in my opinions as I continue to use it.

Just got this. It comes with 12 UCO Titan Stormproof matches inside but there is room for two more plus the additional strikers so I now have 14 inside. I had thought to take the strikers out but then I wondered whether the striker paper is waterproof and will matches strike on it when it is wet? I'll ask UCO and get back to you. Would be a bit silly to have stormproof matches that cannot be lit.

So I have bought something that is a match but also a firestarter/tinder  They are the Diamond Strike-a-Fire strikeable firestarters :like: They are very similar to the UCO Sweetfire strikeable firestarters :tu:

I got a box of these (48 in a box) at Wal-Mart in the grilling section for around $10 US :o The Sweetfire ones cost me around $8 US for 20 :salute: For fire starting in general I believe that the Diamond ones are a much better deal as they are suppose to burn for 12-15 minutes (what it says on the back) and cost roughly 21 cents each :like: while the UCO Sweetfire ones only burn about 7 minutes and cost roughly 40 cents each  I do think that the Sweetfire are still a good deal and come in a much more compact box (think kitchen matches sized box) with better striking surfaces on each side of the box, which would be more convenient to carry with you into the woods but you could likely stick a few of the Diamond ones in a ziploc with a striker and be just as convenient  Also considering the size of the Diamond ones, you could cut them in half or in fourths if in survival situation and make 2 match ones and 2 extra just for tinder (if you have another source for making fire) :tu: Couple comparison pics of the 2

I am going to try and strike one of each in the near future and see how long they actually burn and see how each one fairs :salute: I think I will also cut the Diamond ones in half both ways and in fourths to also check to see how they do like that :tu:

Also of note, the Sweetfire ones have a much better and more natural smell (being made from sugar cane fibers) whereas the Diamond ones have more of a fuel type smell (no idea what they are made from but do look similar to the Sweetfire). I am guessing this is less environmentally friendly but in survival I wouldn't be thinking about that as much as just regular use ::) but they are sold in the grilling section so perhaps not majorly bad for the environment or food :D

Remember these?

I finally lit one over the weekend.  The bad news is that I forgot to switch my camera to video mode, but the good news is that it was on burst mode, so I got a few good photos even if I didn't get video.

They didn't burn as long as UCO matches do, but that is to be expected as they are a fraction of the size.  It did burn for about ten seconds before getting to the wood and being blown out by the wind.  It was neat to see that a 50 year old match had just as much potential today as it did (at least) five decades ago.

I am just guessing they burn as well as they did when they were new.  It seemed to burn with about what I would expect from a match of that size, but as I wasn't around to witness a burn of them 50 years ago I really have no frame of reference.  :D

But, regardless of how well they originally would have worked, they work excellently now.  :D

Well I finally remembered to light one of the Strike a Fire firestarter matches

It was a little bit windy but nothing that a normal Spring day might be :tu: I lit it and it went straight out  I had a few strike anywhere matches and got out of the wind and finally got the thing to catch fire :ahhh I then stuck it down in the ground and started a timer :tu: it burned for 16 minutes and 50 seconds :o very pleased with that time  :like: it also had flames around the 3 minute mark that were sustained long enough and hot enough to boil water :salute:

The first pic is when I first lit it, second was about 3 minutes in and the 3rd poc was almost at 10 minutes  after the 10 minute mark it was very small flames but with as long as it burned (provided you can get it going) it would definitely dry kindling out enough that it would catch fire and help start a decent fire :like:

Worth taking camping but I wouldn't recommend these as a piece of survival gear (which clearly they aren't and are for grilling :D ) still was fun to watch it burn  :D

It kind of sucks that they don't light themselves as they are supposed to though.

Still, I can see some benefit to them, although maybe not as much as just plain firestarters.  What is the pricing like on them?

If the wind hadn't been a factor they would have lit themselves :salute: at least I will try again when the wind isn't blowing and see for myself  They are relatively cheap at about $15 for a box of 48 :o So they are priced right :D Not advertised to do anything with outdoor survival or camping is
probably why the prices aren't bad ;)

Once lit though, it burned very well :tu: I really haven't bought many other type firestarters so I can't comment how they stack up against others  I usually use paper or cardboard to start fires around home but a few of these thrown into a pack with some other matches a striker or a lighter would weigh nothing :like: Worth the purchase to me for sure though :tu:

Standard matches were always enough for me. I was going to pick up a nice orange container with those nice stormproof matches, but I talked myself out of it. I may reconsider.

Even a full matchbox was overkill, so I split it into two slender halves. Nice and thin, and still plenty of matches.

Well, I didn't light to much of a fire under this thread last time :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh  :D

Have any new matches came out lately  I know it is a very small niche in the market but was hoping to find some new info on matches, match safes or anything match related

I picked up some of these in the grocery store the other day:

Not bad at all. Not as great as the "strike anywhere" matches of yore, but they work nicely if 'struck' carefully on a rough surface.

I rubbed a little paraffin wax on the wooden sticks of a few (being careful not to get any wax on the white tips) and found that they burned a bit longer & hotter. Sort of a Redneck Hurricane match. Not waterproof, but could be a good addition to a match safe.

Good ole Diamond Strike Anywheres  I still have some of the red tipped Strike Anywhere ones that they use to sell along with the newer green tipped ones like you have pictured :salute: I like the idea of using wax to make them burn longer as well :tu: :like:

I'm thinking if you coated the entire match, they would be waterproof, but then you would need to remove the wax from the white tip before they would light.  Always a trade-off...

Hum... favourite matches.

I'd have to say New Zealand vs South Africa. Awlso, any rugby game with the all Blacks, South Africa or Australia.

I've been using these a lot more lately- they aren't as cheap as some of the others, but as you don't use ten matches each time, they probably even out!

Exactly Def!  I get so frustrated with matches that flame out a half second after you strike them.

Don't get me started!

I live on the ocean- the air is always damp here and almost always windy.  Most matches don't stand a chance!   :ahhh

Unfortunately I am also pretty cheap at times and hate spending money on something that I am literally going to burn!

Do you guys use matches regularly?

I have some of those stormproof matches in my fire kit, but they are really just a backup to my Bics.

Yeah, I use matches quite frequently for lighting my BioLite camp stove at work.  Since it is usually windy (I'm only a few hundred yards from the ocean) it is easier to drop a lit match into the burn chamber than it is to try and ignite something in the open and drop it in.

I went the opposite way.  I now use the long reach lighters for my Coleman stoves.

This is what I do.  I have a Soto extendable which is awesome for lighting stoves, even twig ones and alcohol.

I haven’t used anything other than strike anywhere with a wax coated tip in a long time, but have been contemplating giving some stormproof ones a try.  The UCO do look interesting.

I can confirm they do stay lit when dunked in water.  We thought it was hype or some trick but when we tried  :o.  I light rain wouldn't bother those UCO matches IMO.  I'd be pretty confident in wet weather situations tho I am not sure how much wind they can withstand  :dunno:.

They are some of the best and I have tried it more than once to see if they would stay lit :ahhh :like:

The Zippo brand ones do just as well

They also have the regular sized ones (the Zippo ones are more similar sized to the Titan ones) and the ones you have are a bigger more awesome version of the regular ones :o they burn longer and have all the same pluses of the regular sized ones :salute: the regular ones are cheaper though :tu:

Man do I love matches :dd: :D

Anything worth doing is worth overdoing.  I will keep using the Titans.  When you are trying to get something to light, it's not a bad thing to have more fire.

I kinda figured you guys would agree with that!

I see Les Stroud and Dave Canterbury talking about having one match and having to live off it, and I'm pretty sure that would mean I was going to die.

Yeah they can have their one match but I'll have several UCO and a ferro rod plus some magnesium and fat wood to boot all as back up to my lighter.  While I like to fool with fire I am not going to be relying on a match or a lighter.  I have my emergency fire kit stocked with UCO matches.

Yeah I am thinking of picking up a bunch of them to stash in different places.  Short of lighting candles in the house, I cannot forsee a situation where that much fire would not be a welcome thing.

Agree.  If talking survival, I like the idea of redundancy.  I don’t usually have matches; but I frequently have a couple lighters, spark wheel, ferro rod and multiple types of tinder.

Yeah, they aren't the best matches, but they would do in a pinch.  Perfect for kayaking!

Also, I don't think any of them were used before I got them.  Likely someone set up a paddling kit, threw these in there and then forgot about them.

Redheads used to produce more sizes in their safety matches and have limited edition packs with various themes and artwork on the boxes. The boxes were and still are I guess quite collectible, as in the same way people collect SAK's.

Problem with this is that they're not strike anywhere, you need the strip from the side of the box and that doesn't work when it gets wet. I find it rather counter productive. It also means that you need to keep a bit of striking strip with your matches where you store them.

Match striking surface is important and needed.  I'm going to guess and say most like me carry their matches in a water tight container with striker.

I do wonder if there is a match that can be struck on the file of the 58mm SAKs?  I should give it a try.  Strike anywhere aside I wonder if there is a reliable metal match strike surface available?

I am not too worried myself as I use a water tight container with strike surface.

The author of this blog post went to some trouble to investigate:

https://www.99boulders.com/why-have-so-many-strike-anywhere-matches-been-discontinued

The TL;DR version:  a number of brands have been discontinued because strike anywhere matches incur hazardous material shipping fees (making them not profitable to sell online for home delivery in consumer quantities), but Diamond Greenlight strike anywhere matches are still fairly widely available in hardware and big box stores.

I have a small 'stockpile' of strike anywhere matches, i keep them in a waterproof keychain that was originally a peanut lighter. Some others I keep in non-waterproof kits, but have dipped their heads in wax.

Whilst playing around with them I discovered that Rough Rider's 'match strike' nail nicks are not actually rough enough to strike them. The file on a Compact, however, works wonderfully and feels like you're using a matchbox in hand.
