Title: EDC a different SAK every day for 30 days #6 - 93mm Alox
Post by: Syem on June 04, 2018, 10:05:32 PM
Here goes month 6... oh how time flies  :ahhh

Been carrying 150 knives for the past 5 months: (month 1 [misc] (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,75292.0.html), month 2 [Alox84/85mm]  (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,75698.0.html), month 3 [Metal 74mm/Minimalist] (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,76240.0.html), month 4 [65mm] (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,76721.0.html), month 5 [58mm] (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,77200.0.html)), time for another 30 to complete this first half of the year.

Starting today, Monday the 4th of June, I'll be carrying a different 93mm Alox knife every day. I thought I might do 30 soldiers knives, and I could, but that would be a little bit boring so I'll mix them up for the enjoyment of us all.

I'm sorry to make this thread on the first day of my challenge... but I'm sure some of you could join me starting tomorrow, we all want to see your beauties!

I'll keep counting the knives towards my year so 151 to 180 (!!!).

Again, I'll be following the same guidelines I set out in month #2 (copy-pasted below). Again, I'm not planning any breaks for this month either...

Code: (Some ground rules for the challenges:) [Select]
- Carrying/using multiple SAKs simultaneously is ok but we're counting the days and not the knives.
 - Need to carry at least one "not carried in this challenge yet" knife every day. (if you're not doing the whole year with me, feel free to reset your list after each month)
 - Since this will go on for at least a whole year, breaks are allowed but only due to carry restrictions while travelling or because of hospitalization. Just pick up where you left off once you're back.
 - Exact duplicates are allowed but not twice in a row. (do not count as exact duplicates: variations in generations/tool evolution, scale & crest - type & shape & color, wear/damage, inlays/engravings and the likes. Basically, as long as we can tell them apart, it's ok to post them twice in a row). Posting a pic of the duplicates together before carrying them is strongly suggested.

It's still a bit pointy... And the awl sure is menacing...

I like the idea though! They need to do a kinder Messer Alox (cue in someone with a link of this already existing). I'm against the whole kid soldier idea though :D

Day 152

Victorinox Pioneer Pruner in a gorgeous turquoise blue.

I had to mount a mini photo studio's lightbox today so of course I tested that it works properly :D

Day 153

Victorinox Soldier 91
It's like new but was actually restored at the spa a few weeks ago. It was given a new awl, new set of original soldier scales and an actual new 91 blade!!! You probably saw it in the "latest sak" thread but I wanted to carry it today and it felt great!

Mmh that is something I've heard many times before but I never tried it... Before this challenge I've been EDC-ing a CT34 for at least 15 years and an Alox MiniChamp for a shorter while.

I'll have to try that soon then :D

Came out shining new from the spa at the cost of having a newer blade... The old one was just too bad compared to the rest of the knife.

Well... They sell many Vic knives and do blade and scales engravings. They also have what seems to be custom "advertising" knives special-ordered from Victorinox, such as this green farmer or a blue Alox  Classic SD for example. Their website is a bit of a mess but it's easy to find :D

Day 162

Victorinox Seaman
- bi-color with old Red with OC on the front and newer/darker red on the back. This piece came back from the spa with essentially just the backspring and liner coming from the original knife I sent. It got new scales, a new awl (old one was ground in half) and a new blade as the original was in terrible shape too. I got all of them back too so i don't feel bad.
In case you're wondering: the spa doesn't have any back scales with the cut-out in the old red. That's why this knife has two tones of red.

We really need a Strobogrammatic soldier club, i would start one but i don't think it would be very busy  ;)
I just need an 88 and an 11 and i'm good to go  :salute:

Well in the pic of the back scale you can see the back of the front scale. Color difference is a bit more obvious there... The OC is a bit more orange than the new darker red.

Here's another pic where we can kinda see..

Victorinox Pioneer in blue.
Gorgeous color but after using the cap lifters on the model '61 soldiers, that smaller cap lifter seems weak and flimsy in comparison...

Yep! This is one of the training fields close to a military "recruit school". There's also an old decorative tank at the entrance along with a couple of cannons. Other signs near the fields include "danger of unexploded live ammunition"

I didn't know I had one until I stumbled upon it in my 93mm Alox box yesterday evening ^^

I actually knew that and always leave it at the same lenght as the other 2... I dunno why I figured it would be a good idea to make it shorter. Probably because it's always a pain to fit it inside and because I didn't sleep enough ^^
I also forgot the final shot with the plug finished ^^
I may just go back and fix that :D

:o  ... yes, appreciated  :D
So it's a 62-64 Pioneer today then?

I also have a 66 Elsener in red. They used spare red scales for quite a few years...

But you're right (except it's a Soldier, not a Pioneer :P)

Day 170

Elsener Soldier 1964 in red.
This one's scales are a bit worst than the one I carried on day "1" (150) but unlike that one the blade and tools are pristine :D (I'll post the first two in the Hats thread too :P)

Great pics, and hat Syem  :tu:  :like:

I keep using Pioneer and Soldier term for the same, sorry. Pioneer was the commercial one without year stamp, with brass liners (up to a point) and with keyring, right?

I did mean the Soldier then.

Ok, so  occasionally there are older ones in red  :tu:

Thanks!
Many Pioneers don't have a keyring...
I could say the main difference resides in the year tang-stamp but some spare soldier blades have been used on Pioneers.
Another difference of note could be the cap lifter... But it actually evolved pretty much the same way on both... Newer Soldiers have the crappy slim cap-lifter. And while most Pioneers easily found have the new cap-lifter too you can find older ones with the same as the soldiers'.
Main difference then is the scales. Pioneers are either OC or have the new "hexagonal" shield... Or advertising. Soldiers always have either the "fat old cross" with the quality check stamp in it or the newer rounded shield.
Some old Pioneers have the full-size awl instead of the in-line awl/reamer too. I've got one coming my way

Just lovely  :dd:

Thanks Ollie  :salute: I did a bit of research today and found out that the opener layer of the Soldiers was as thick as the blade layer, until some time in the 90s maybe?
What I couldn't find out was how the blade of the Soldiers is different to the Pioneers  Especially to the current Pioneers. I think on my 2017 olive Pioneer the blade has quite a gap to the awl.
And the shape of kinda special on the current Pioneers (asymmetrical).

The asymmetrical (crinked) blade on the Pioneer series is neccesary otherwise the second tool in the layer (small blade/pruner blade/electrician´s blade/awl) won´t fit.
Only the Pioneer Solo comes with a straight, centered blade (but only occasionally!).

And that I think is not "fully" true because there is quite a big gap between the blade and the awl.
The blade could be thicker there, or more symmetrical, I think.
It looks that way on my 2017 Pioneer at least.
So I would like to see a comparison to an older Soldier  :D

A picture will make it clearer.

from top to bottom: uncrinked Solo, Pruner, and Carver.

As you can see the Carver has the gap, but the Pruner doesn´t. Yet the main blade is crinked the same way. Probably saves on production costs.

Looks like the pruner blade is thicker than the awl, thus having a thinner spacer, and a smaller space gap?

Actually, at the tang the pruner blade is thinner than the awl, by a very tiny bit.

Day 173

Victorinox Alox Solo in red OC with bail and symmetrical blade.

Recently restored by the spa... New scales and bail and rejuvenated original blade...

It's sitting on a box that some might recognize. It teamed up with little Sigsetter here to open up some knife mail which deserves sunlight for its pictures.

Victorinox Pioneer - golden coloured, with bail, with a vintage awl and with a Fischer tang-stamp. Dunno about the time period yet so I welcome any insights on this piece!

Just got it the other day and couldn't pass carrying it on this extremely important day in the office. I wish I could explain what happened but its basically a really big milestone.

Lovely old Pioneer Syem  :dd:   :like:

- Can opener no +Pat = 1971-
- Bottle opener with write stripper = 1951-1980
- Fisher = 1957-? ... but that side of the Tang was only stamped until 1974

So you're probably looking at 1971-74 of the tools are original, and of there is really no +Pat stamp.

I'm not sure about the awl though.

Thanks Pieter!

I'm really loving carrying these Alox! I'm starting to think I should do another month with them... Sadly it would me mostly soldiers as I'm soon running out of non-soldier 93mm Alox... I'll probably switch it up to another category instead and miss these Alox beauties.

Nice knife.  Does Victorinox have OC scales sitting around?!  Or do they make them special for restoring old knives?

I believe they do have OC scales sitting around.
If they were making them special I would have to pay a hefty price for them. As it stands, most repairs including scales and tools replacements/restore cost me between 10 and 15 CHF.

I'm having them replace as many as possible while they still have stocks of them... I know they already don't have any red OC back scales with the cut-out for a Marlinspike (and possibly full awl, I'm not sure if the cutout is the same or not but I think either way they're out of those). (The back scale is of course not "OC" but I mean in the same specific red)

Thanks for the info.
I've always liked the red OC scale the best.  It's good to see they can still be had from Victorinox in new condition.

I'm still kicking myself for not buying the Arpeggio back when they were cheap, and the longer i leave it the more expensive they get

Thanks Matt!

I just can't resist 7s so this one is precious to me

Here's the chronological group shot as promised:

(recovering from OCD... I've forced myself not to go and fix the alignment... Sorry for those of you whose eyes this will hurt)

And here's A bit of a reds comparison. It's a bit hard to tell but if you stare long enough you can see it. What surprised me the most is the difference between the OC and the soldier's.
From left to right : MTo PX (modern Alox red), red 1963 Soldier, brand new red OC scales, 2018 LE Berry red (which I didn't carry during the month).

Awesome group shot Syêm  :like:
As for the red-tone comparison the 1963 Soldier looks like a very deep red.
While the 2018 LE seems to go a bit into the pink'ish red.

But I like them all  :gimme:
