Hi all. I just finished a very humble DIY SAK display using a SAK as my only tool. I started this in my 30 day minimal challenge. ( http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,70620.msg1435998.html#msg1435998 )
Just curious how some of y'all go about displaying your SAKS if you do so at all.
Here are some pics of my little project.

Very cool!! Which SAK did you use??

That's really neat. Looks good, and keeps the SAKs readily available for use.

In a display cabinet, on a homemade display stand and a bought stand.
Other stuff that interests me is also located in this cabinet. (Except for flashlights)

El Corkscrew - I'm not big on displays, but I like what you've done there! I like how they are displayed and still easy to access for use and carry. Whenever I display something, I find myself not wanting to disturb it and then things just sit unused and unloved. Haha

Well, thanks WE!
I agree, admittedly, I do have a few SAKs NIB that I keep hidden away, but the ones that are open (and have a keyring) will definitely get more love now. Changing them out and rearranging them will probably be a new hobby for me too. Lol!

Oh corkscrew, that's a neat little setup!
Here's mine, nothing big, well yeah, it's heavy but I don't have a lot of sak, there's eight there, but have a few floating. But that's my collection of junk, sak's, locking knives, flashlights, what used to be magazines but now notepads, and some pens and stuff..

I must say I really liked that hook idea so I had to try it on the side of my display box. The only hooks I had were so small unlike that larger one, I fig I'd just give it a try and see how it turned out and if I didn't like it the holes would be so small you wouldn't see them.
Anyway I kinda like it, I'll have to get the little bit larger hooks, and maybe do some math to figure out how to put some more on, or maybe even run them down the angle? Although it's kinda cool how all the shields are on this side..

I only really have five other sak, two in which are the smaller sak, fine will fit nice with the angle, but the three other are like seven and five layer and would hang funky, so I'll have some room for investing a few other farmer size sak,, hooks first! Just need to come up with some reason for the wife, hmm, that and now that the top is empty what to put up there

Very nice, I like the artwork. Those hooks must be strong to hold the weight of an XXLT :)
Is the case with all the little slots purpose-made, or was it originally something else?

Thank you. The hooks are very strong but I only put the big boy on there for the photo. It sits on my desk in it's case.
I found the wooden case at an antique shop but don't know what it's original use was.

If you have 50 or less knives a large tackle box is a great option. It works for storage or display.
Of course 30-50 SAKs is a transitional phase. I am a 30 year user/ 2 year collector.

If you follow the edge of the display with the hooks, you'll have one SAK a little over the other, showing every SAK a little by peeping out on top instead of hiding in a row.

Organized peppers psh!

I got more hooks so I did a little work to hang the little guys. Only thing is I think the hooks are kinda big, but still looks ok..
JR
If you follow the edge of the display with the hooks, you'll have one SAK a little over the other, showing every SAK a little by peeping out on top instead of hiding in a row.
Front viewed ofcourse...
You mean running another row above this one? Their too long, but, if their narrow enough they fit right between the hooks
JR
Nope, I mean moving the current row along the edge of the display.
Just a thought
Kinda like what I did with the smaller ones?
JR
Uhm, no...
That's still horizontal...
Just a sec, I'll draw it. ;)

I get the point and I kinda like the idea, only problem is if I switch things around there's going to be holes, that and idk if there would be enough length to hook them all, and if I get more?

Speaking of more... will someone please help me decide which knife to edc from a couple recent acquisitions. I'm a little torn. Vic Soldier '03 or new Pioneer. The Vic has seen some action already, but still in pretty good shape. The Pioneer.... it's so new and beautiful, it could stay perfect on the shelf.... but... they're still in production and all.... I wish I thought this much about selecting my health insurance! lol!
Btw here's the current display, I keep re-categorizing the rows, which is fun.
-
Carry the Soldier for a while.
If you like the package it offers, you can still break in the Pioneer.
Or get another Pioneer to keep 1 as a user and the other for the bling :D

Thanks Mechanickal!
So I did EXACTLY what you said and got another new Pioneer. I justified the purchase for these reasons: 1)Just sold a knife on the bay 2) the Pioneer I already had has a damaged box, and I'd like one with a perfect box on the shelf 3)Got the new Pioneer on a buy now offer for $25, shipping included. I feel good, I don't have a problem.

Well I bought the Cybertool 41 myself last week.
Didn't sell anything, didn't need it per se, but drooled over it for 5 months.
Eventualy I bought one with the explaination "I'll live only once, better enjoy it"
So if you're happy with it El C, there is nothing or nobody who can have anything against it.
Enjoy buddy! The Pioneer is an elegant piece of art that looks as good in a backpack as in a tuxedo pocket.

Bottom - some of the heavy stuff
I think El Corkscrew needs to get a new display in the works... something "real nice"

I have my collection in a drawer divider. Nothing fancy, I'll make a photo when I get home.
I have one SAK always on display, my trusty Handyman:

Thank you, my single barrel friend. But with a growing pile of alox, I need a display that supports the key ring-disabled. Awl that pressure is building up, it's only fair.

My collection of SAKs sharing their 'display' with other knives.
I'm working on a batter rack/case/something for my SAKs. I'd like to hang them when possible, but also need to store the boxes. Maybe even store other knives.
This is it for now.
A couple of folders, (r)Emersons, Spyderco, Böker+
One lost Wenger, boxless SAKs, smaller SAKs on the right with a lone Leatherman.
Fixed blades; Mora FireKnife and Compagnion MG and an ESEE Izula.
At the back, tucked between the SAKs an Opinel and a Go-Tube.
The SAKs are roughly sorted by size; 111mm. 91/84mm and the smaller 74/54mm.

Is there anyone else out there with a "MacGyver section" in your display? You know, SAKs/models you can date between '85-91 that Mac used in episodes...
My MacGyver knives are:
Spartan/Standard/Tourist
Tinker/Tinker Small
Climber
Camper
Executive
Huntsman
Sportsman
Wenger Commander
Yes, I'm big Macgyver nerd, probably seen every single episode at least 5 times.

Went out today and bought myself some cheapo smartphone/tablet stands.
You know those ones that flip open into a V shape with rubberized ends? Those!
Now my toys are out of their sheaths, with the acompaning sheath in the triangle formed by the tool inside the holder.

I suppose that I am not alone in not displaying my SAKs in a case or shelf. The closest that I come is having some close at hand. At the moment, I have a Swiss Champ and an Explorer close at hand on an end table plus a Cadet and two other Explorers in cases on a shelf within reach.

I made an executive decision and decided to scrap an old executive to use as parts for the display. Using these very crude means this final rivet is really giving it his awl.

El deconstructed executive AKA future SAK display parts.

A buddy gave me some cool looking scrap wood so I decided to put it to use and continue the all-SAK theme by using El SI box to help me make a cross... still a work in progress but it will fit in El Display somehow.
I used the small blade on a Camper for the razor-blade like tasks, and the blade and awl on the Pioneer for most of the wood removal.

Thanks, knights! Realized I'll have to widen the blade section a bit so 93mm blades that aren't in terrible shape will fit in there too.
Btw, I've uploaded some youtube SAK videos, none of them talk about displays but you might find something interesting or you can make fun of my mistakes in the comment section. :D

Nice, but it will put a lot of tension on the spring. I would not leave my SAK like this for a longer period of time. Either close it or open it fully.

I'm aware is not the best thing for the Springs, I'll probably leave a beater in there, maybe even a 91mm, as I do enjoy the look.

Pretty much done just gotta Sand it when I get home.
This wood was extra difficult to work with. I must have been carving into the joint of a branch or something but this wood was hard as rock.
I got some cuts and blisters to prove it.

Okay RS, here ya go:
So was this caused by the keyring, or the keyring nub, or simply by hard work only?
The blister was caused by the edge where the tools meet the scales. With the Camper I used the small blade so the KR was not in the danger zone, I was using a Pioneer w/KR nub ground off but it still left a sore spot in the palm of my hand. Had there been a nub I probably would have gotten a blister.
With this extremely dense wood my normal techniques proved to be a little unsafe, blades closing while working, and a couple slips resulted in a few cuts.
I know I could have got this done a lot easier with other/power tools but I wanted to keep it minimal SAK style

That took way to long for the blister pics!

Attached are two flat file file cabinets that just went up on my state's surplus auction site. They are generally used for blue prints, maps, plots and other large, flat, paper hard copies. The current bids are $11.04 and $20.01, respectively with roughly 6 days to go. To me these would seem to be perfect for storing the large collections some of our members have, especially the wooden one which looks pretty nice. I don't know how far the drawers pull out and that may have some effect on the ease of placing knives in the back of the drawers but each of these would literally store hundreds of SAKs. These type of file cabinets might be available in your area from oil companies, architectural or construction firms, etc. Just an idea. BTW, I mention these because they would be overkill for the fifteen or so knives in my collection!

Display + pocket knife = does not compute
I'm one of the weirdos who thinks a knife belongs in a pocket, not on a shelf :D
Its interesting to see the little projects that you guys cook up, but I have no interest in following suit. I only get any feeling of pride, worth or satisfaction from using pocket knives. Just owning them and looking at them doesn't do much for me. When they're not in use, they live in a drawer or are stashed in little kits.

I feel ya. And don't get me wrong, I have a knife in my pocket that I use everyday. but you know it's just my hobby so a pick from about 10 that I EDC. only have about 60 on display. And then I have boxes of new and used ones I hope to eventually display.
It is and it isn't about using the tool for me. I will probably never use most of my knives, but I don't tend to collect models that I wouldn't carry.
it's more about the history in the mystique for me and it's also a way to interact with people from around the world who are passionate about these things. :salute:

:salute:
There are lots of different ways that members here appreciate them. For some it's colours, for some it's different design variants, or tang stamp, or rare items, or different collectable scale prints.
For me it's simply about having the right tool in my pocket when I need it. I tried many different types before I found what works for me, and it was a fun journey, but now i can just coast along with my select few without feeling the desire to chase down the next one. I've never really been a collector, but it's still nice to see some of the treasures found by those who are

The reason for this is we're putting the house up for sale soon, and I don't want my most precious items (the expensive and rare ones and the military/government related collection) to be visible on the photo's of the house and I don't want to risk someone taking one during an 'open house'. Maybe I'm too distrustful, but better safe than sorry :D
We're moving in about two months and until then I probably am too busy with other things than the SAK collection anyway!

I’ve been working on this display. My goal was to have the current cellidor 84mm and 91mm models. I don’t have the watch case opener 84mm, or all of the “lite” 91s, but it’s a pretty good representation. I have my fancy models on the top shelf, and all of the Marlboros on the bottom.

I recently upgraded my storage solution when we redecorated our bedroom. My wife gave me special dispensation (honest it was her idea) to install a glass topped shelf in the main IKEA wardrobe.
Below are the photos tracing the evolution of my collection from March 2020 when I became a card carrying member of this madhouse…
I was going to post it as a thread in the new members board as a warning to all new prospective SOSAKs…
Not as extensive or cool as others but I enjoy it every damn day!
