Title: Lanyard bail for 108mm Solo
Post by: SteveC on January 04, 2016, 11:49:44 PM
I made a lanyard bail for my 108mm solo out of a bicycle spoke. I made two, the first one came out a bit long so I made another shorter one. I like the shorter one a lot better as it can't accidentally get in the way of the blade snapping closed and chipping it.

I used  the wire cutters on my rebar and they cut the spoke no problem. I bent it up using my vise and a small hammer. I'm pleased with how it turned out.

First try

Nice work!
Mine says hi!

I made mine out of a coat hanger - I was lucky and got a nicely fiting one at the second attempt, too. Sadly I made it on teh go and did not take notes on the required length.
The knives are variants on the Solo (Solo Plus and Solo poker with Awl instead of corkscrew) made from damaged GAKs.
I found it to be looking nice but having the same problem as teh bail on teh 93 mm Soldiers - When a smurf liek me handles the knife, you can damage the blade.

My only 108mm (German Army Knife) came with around an 18 inch lanyard made from paracord threaded through the hole with a Reeve knot in the end done by a previous owner.  I like the lanyard a lot on that one.  I actually used it as a guide to tying a different type of lanyard (tied to the lanyard ring and a carabiner on the other end) to make sure the knot was tied right.

Great job!    I will attempt this on my 1993 Soldier 1961 whose  lanyard hole is too small to thread any kind of line through.

And great custom lowtech!   I find more use myself out of the awl than I do a corkscrew.

Good Mod  :salute: I  like that you used an bike spoke!

I used some very thick wire on my SI Farmer mod, it had more give in it than some springier wire kindly given to me by Hiraethus - I just couldn't work it properly. Here's my effort;

Thank you - Although I was pleased with the outcome , given these were my first 108 mod attempts, I would not call them great. The Awl/blade ones scales are a bit clumsy compared to what members on here can do with wood and the bends on the bail were not perfect either, but the tools hat no play and did work and the scales did even click back on on the Solo Plus. Plus I had fun making them and got damaged knives back into service.
Sadly a (now banned) Scammer offered me a trade on them and I was the only one to actually send out the goods... May they fold on hsi fingers.

Thanks guys !  Someone suggested using a bicycle spoke in another thread I read a while back.

lowtech, that sucks about your knives. >:(

In total I had much more positive trade experiences here than negative and the virtual friends I made on the way and the chance to own and test tools I would not have gotten my hands on otherwise still do more than weigh up the few bad experiences.
And sorry for stealing your thread - It just reminded me of those two knives.

I modified some d-rings for my bails. In order to fill up excess space in the holes, I used short pieces of brass tubing.

Which one isn't showing ?

Your pics show up nicely but Spork's pic of the d ring doesn't.

And I'm anxiously awaiting my green Safari Trooper to arrive from Moose country.

Maybe it's an issue with tapatalk. I just checked using Safari and Firefox on my iPhone...and can see them with both without having to log in

Awesome, for some reason I can see the pic today. I like the setup and the BSA hot spark as well. When I'm off again I'll have a go at making a bail for my trooper.

I needed a few more bails for some GAKs I rebuilt...

5/8" D-ring and 1/8" brass hobby tubing. The D-ring is wider than the knife so there is minimal bending/distortion when installing the bail.

Thanks. I think a 1/2" D-ring might work for a Solo.

I don't remember exactly where I got mine from...had them in my leather working stuff. You want the non-welded type...the welded ones are usually thicker stock. You might be able to find them in a sewing store on the "Notions"...of course Amazon and Ebay.

I made an attempt and it turned out okay. I used the copper from a mouse trap like I saw somewhere here on the forums.

There's an answer that works for that (and for many other things) : heat shrinking tubing :)

I started to use it in electronics, then to protect knots or friction zones on some cords, used it as size tuning pearl on variable-size lanyards, as "rattling protector", and now as a protective layer for my LD12 : http://goo.gl/pfQNeU

After "microsoft everywhere", it's time for "heat-shrinking tubing everywhere"

==> is not pretty, but very efficient for those jobs  :multi:
