Title: EDC a different SAK every day for 31 days #11 - 100mm and more
Post by: Syem on November 04, 2018, 03:55:27 AM
Some of you may have noticed I didn't carry any 2008 model soldiers in month 10... The first reason is they were boxed up because I'm moving soon (hopefully) and the second reason is that I wasn't sure I'd have enough knives of 100mm and more so I was saving them. The fact is I have enough and this is what I'll carry this month :)

Any Victorinox or Wenger knife of 100mm or more will do. The size of the "frame" is what matters... any protruding elements are excluded from measurements (I'm thinking about you, Wenger PocketGrip/MiniGrip (http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Wenger+PocketGrip)).

The challenge starts on Sunday the 4th of November but anyone crazy enough to join me can do so until 11th.

As far as incentives go for joining me in this month's challenge:
- There's a badge for "EDC a different SAK every day for 30 days" which you could get if you don't have it
- All pre 09 soldiers are 2 layers...you could get the Minimalist badge if you only carried those
- You could revel in the fact that you're joining me in this historical event that is "the first person to carry a different SAK every day for a whole year" (and document it?)
- I may decide to do a giveaway if multiple people join me this month (you don't have to do the whole month if you can't)
- I will definitely do a giveaway at the end of the year including everyone that joined in during the year (for at least a whole week) in the draw

I'll keep counting the knives towards my year so 304 to 334. (31 knives in total, 31 to go after this month to complete a full year!)

I'll be once more following the guidelines I set out in month #2 (copy-pasted below).

Code: (Some ground rules for the challenges:) [Select]
- Carrying/using multiple SAKs simultaneously is ok but we're counting the days and not the knives.
 - Need to carry at least one "not carried in this challenge yet" knife every day. (if you're not doing the whole year with me, feel free to reset your list after each month)
 - Since this will go on for at least a whole year, breaks are allowed but only due to carry restrictions while travelling or because of hospitalization. Just pick up where you left off once you're back.
 - Exact duplicates are allowed but not twice in a row. (do not count as exact duplicates: variations in generations/tool evolution, scale & crest - type & shape & color, wear/damage, inlays/engravings and the likes. Basically, as long as we can tell them apart, it's ok to post them twice in a row). Posting a pic of the duplicates together before carrying them is strongly suggested.

For the record, here's the list of topics for the previous 10 months:

Day 306

Victorinox Sentinel with slide lock and blue nylon scales.

This used to be a very worn out ad knife which came back from the spa with shiny new scales without ads and a brand new blade.

Day 307

Victorinox (Victoria?) Gardener/Floral Knife - 1957-1970 (guess from the tang stamps)

The front tang stamp, VICTORIA SWITZERLAND 475, doesn't appear on any chart I've seen. Although the same with 471 does show up.
I'm not sure the scales are nylon; they dont have the same feel (maybe its just the texture).

Funny thing is I bought this "new" (although it has seen its share of drawer shakes) from one of the oldest knife stores in Geneva.

Always have been intrigued by that knife. Also never really understood (I know it's for rapid access) why the hook was fixed, as opposed to folding (like the Benchmade Triage) or recessed into the handle (Eickhorn Pocket Rescue Tool/PRT line).

The floral knife isn't bad either. I have an American made Clauss that I use a lot. It's great for precise stuff.

I don’t even own a “rescue knife”. I wouldn’t mind getting one in the future, it’s just that other knives pop up and it just keeps going to the back burner. Same thing with the BSA stayglow. One day.

Every winter (or rather mid-autumn) they put out stalls in strategic places in geneva that sell roasted chestnut.

I think it's also for cost-saving; the scale is identical to other 130mm knives, the blade is simple with just added etching. I think only one piece is different and allows for this implement to exist...
I'm missing the rubber/plastic cover for the cutter... But this knife was gifted to me by a member of the Alinghi sailing team :)

I have never had that. Guess I will need to buy a bag and try them out.
Go for it, it will give you an excuse to reprofile a can opener into a nice hook blade to cut the shell  :tu: ignore what i do by just putting the knife through it, that's me just being lazy..
It is important to cut the shell though, think giant popcorn projectiles bouncing off the walls, slicing an X on top should do it, then into an old frying pan with holes drilled in and onto the fire for a bit  i think you can do them in the oven though if that's not possible   :dunno:

Very nice!

I love them, they make great nibbles and smell good too  :salute:

I just love that feeling when you know exactly what you need for the day, pick the right sak for it and it performs beautifully...
It's not just shelf-queens for black-tie events, it's also beaters for hard work days :D

Nice assortment so far  :like:  i need to pick myself up a Hunter xt some time  :tu:

I didn't have the time to post my feelings about it. It's a strange but beautiful thing :D I'm loving the lock on the gutting blade because as a right-handed person it's very easy to work the lock and close the blade all one-handed. That's a thing I don't get about all these liner-lock... They're just for left-handed people it seems.

Very nice, i had to sakwiki that one, its new to me  :like:

Hi Ray, it's a Race knife, timber scribe, tree marker/ scoop knife..pick a name they are all the same thing, used for marking wood, typically used by foresters, surveyors, log cabin builders etc back in the day when you needed a better mark on the wood than what you would get from chalk or paint, good for marking trails or boundary trees or indeed counting, the cutting edge is u shaped like a bowl gouge, they also seem to be great for writing swear words on logs  :tu:

The place where I got my u-shaped wood-scribe knife (yeah, that's it, after your explanation I'm calling it that :P) also had a V shaped one with removable blade. No other blade/implement to put in its stead though. I just may pick that up next time I go there if they're willing to sell it.

Interesting, even if they wont sell it try and grab a photo  at a guess the removable blade may be for a choice of left or right hand blades

I have an American made Clauss, but not a floral knife. Those single-bevel blades take a really keen edge easily. You see a ton of Vics, but few Wengers. The Professional series, in general, is tough to find.

I have never handled one in person. They look uncomfortable to handle...so, how do they handle? Something you get used to or ???

The closed blades (or blade, if you have one of them open) do protrude quite a bit so it is a bit uncomfortable to grip it tightly. The thickness is bit excessive but I don't have very big hands so it may not be that bad for someone else. It's "ok" overall but I definitely wouldn't want to be carrying just this every day :D

Finally the ranger wood was in my pocket the whole day, no use for it, but not a trouble for a jeans pocket. These wooden handles are really soft and comfortable :like:

Well.. On the sakwiki Grafter page there's a mention of 1.9113 which describes the same as the one I posted but with a Wharncliffe blade instead of the sheepfoot blade mine has...

Also... I've got a Grafter (same as on the picture in the wiki) and I would say they're different enough to deserve different names... It's not just a minor variant... There's 1 more layer and they don't have much in common...

Maybe I'll call it the Budding Knife because of that brass blade...

Hey !! Great thread, nice pictures and knives.
Sorry guys but I’ve disconnected for a while...
I was wondering which ranger should I carry

Finally the ranger wood was in my pocket the whole day, no use for it, but not a trouble for a jeans pocket. These wooden handles are really soft and comfortable :like:]

Syem it’s only one month to complete an epic year :ahhh keep on man !!!
See you in the next month challenge :salute:

Great choice there!

I forgot i got myself one of these 2015  Damascus recently :D that would've made for a great day :D

I also stumbled upon more cool knives when preparing month 12 which would've been perfect for month 11... Another Alinghi... The Winemaster...

Maybe I'll do a month 13 just to pull out the shelf queens that will never see the light of day except maybe in black-tie events...

Maybe I'll wait a few months before doing this 13th month

Day 334 (day 31 of month 11)

Victorinox 108mm Fireman

This poor fellow needed some love today... The saw/cap-lifter and "rescue" blade were really hard to open. Ultrasound bath and a good oiling later and the tough guy was back in business!

Love that Fireman...my dad was a Firefighter and my brother is a Firefighter now. Worked at the same station also.  :hatsoff:
