Title: Pete's November LM Signal Challenge
Post by: pietervn on November 01, 2016, 07:33:39 AM
G'Day,

This month I am going to do a month with the LM Signal. I got it recently from another inmate and like the tool so far.

Now I know there has been some harsh opinions on the tool, and there are a few threads stating that. This thread will hopefully give you a bit of an insight on MY opinion of it and how it will perform in MY EDC needs. I am hoping that it will highlight some of the tool's strengths and weaknesses, based on MY EDC needs.

It came without a sheath, but Gohard has come to the rescue and made a leather sheath for it. That should be here by the end of the week. In the mean time I am using a Leather Wave sheath which fits the tool OK. I also have some planned mods for the future which I will include in the challenge. My idea is to carry the tool "As Is" for the first two weeks and see what I like and not like. I will then add any mods to it and continue to see how the mods are holding up and if they were successful for MY needs. I will run separate threads with the mods in the Mod Squad section. Mods I have in mind are: Wave scissors on the inside, possible blade swap with a Wave / Charge PE blade, Surge Blade Exchanger - if possible and a Wave file where the saw is. The only non-standard bits are the whistle and file that has been dyed black. Just a note on that, if you plan to dye the yellow bits, PLEASE REMOVE the ferro rod before you dye the plastic bits. Mine became a bit pitted, I'm not sure if it was due to the heat, or salt or the dye itself.

I include a few pics to start. More updates will follow.

Cheers,

Pete

Day 1

Nothing to exciting today. Most tasks were food prep: cutting fruit for lunch. Blade is very sharp, when I got it I stropped it for a while to get it really razor sharp.
Tonight I got my lunch for tomorrow ready: cheese and cold meats, again no real issue with the sharp blade. What I have noticed is that the serrations do get "in the way" of normal cutting. I suspected it when I got the tool, hence me wanting to add a PE blade. BUT that is only due to my cutting needs. I also carry a 91mm SAK in my lunchbox with a decent blade if it really becomes an issue. One thing I have noticed is that my index finger wraps around the tool and sits on the little file. In some instances that may be an advantage, but it may also exfoliate some skin that I wasn't planning on. It is not uncomfortable, but noted.

I also used the pliers on some lanyards I am making for a mate. I like them, they have a good feel in the hand and grip very well. I got all the gunk out when I got it and the action is now very smooth. I tried to cut some of the paracord, got it cut but not nearly as neat as what a scissors can do. Micra came to the rescue.

All in all a good day.

Cheers,

Pete

Can't wait to follow this thread Peter :tu: It may make or break my decision to get a Signal ;) I will probably end up with one either way but this may influence the "when"

G'Day,

@Aloha007: The black seems to fit, I prefer it to the yellow. I think if you replace all the tools with BO ones it will look really cool.

@Monrogue: Thanks mate, I think you have certainly taken the lead in modding the tool. Please feel free to add your user comments too.

@ Poncho65: Only a matter of time mate...

Day 2

Today was not much of a tool day in terms of real use. Some lunch duties for the knife which was dealt with pretty swiftly.  ;)

When I got home I decided to have a bit of a play with the Signal and try the bits out. I wanted to remove the RAM mount on my GPS and it is always easier to remove the screw at the top then to try and un-clip by forcing the plastic. The screw takes a 4mm Allen wrench which I have with the bit-kit in the Charge. I got the bit out and opened the tool, removed the bit that was included and put the Allen wrench in. And then it happened!!! The little so-and-so bit me!!! It it the first bite in years but it was enough to draw a bit of blood. When I closed the tool my finger got pinched between the plier-head and the handle and that was enough to cut the skin. Off to a good start here...NOT.

Now here is the major difference between our "normal/usual" multi's and the Signal. You cannot close the handle completely with the bit adaptor sticking out. The hammer prevents the tool from closing with the inner tools deployed. To me it is not to much of a problem, you do get a little more tool in the hand when you use it like that. It may even assist when you have really tight or difficult screws to screw in, or undo with some extra leverage. The MUT works similar to that, but in the case of the MUT you have to open the tool at least 90 degrees. I also tried some of the flat bits in the hex hole. Some of them will fit if the one side is small, 4mm or less. When I undid the GPS screw, I could fit the 4mm through the hex hole, but turned around with the 5mm going into the hex hole it will not fit in completely. I also tried with a standard hex bit, no problem with them fitting, but with the lack of a retaining mechanism you stand a good chance of dropping or loosing said hex bits. Care has to be taken if you are going to use it. I will find something to use a bit on over the weekend and see how it holds up. Another thing I noticed is that you can "accidentally" press the release mechanism and unlock the inner tools when holding the tool with the hammer facing the top. It is shown in one of the photo's.

So the discovery goes on. The tool still intrigues me, given the fact that it is not the traditional LM multi that we are used to.

Cheers,

Pete

Interesting.  It will be good to see some actual user experiences.  While I really like mine, I am a minimal user really, so I don't encounter many of the potential issues from the design.

SIGNAL CHALLENGE IN JANUARY

Two months with a Signal, now that is a challenge...  ;) We are going to need a Badge please Mr Zoidberg

@Monrogue: I am sort of a minimalist user too, except for over the weekends. I think due to its speciality focus it should be good for our use. I think as a hiking tool, possibly for a day or two, but I will still carry a SAK too.

@Poncho65: Indeed very blood thirsty, I have had a quiet word and it should be good from now on.  :D

G'Day,

Day 3

Today was only food prep day. I had a bunch of apples, nectarines and some mandarins to cut. All went very well. I am starting to get used to the blade and the blade design. I did notice that I need to be careful when picking the tool up if the ferro rod is on the top side. My ferro rod turns really easily and if you are not to careful your finger can slip off the tool, possibly dropping it. That is also the case for putting it down. My hand were a little damp too. I must add that I am left handed, and it is not as slippery if you use your right hand. Picking the tool up right handed, your finger gets onto the frame first and then the ferro rod, thus having a decent amount of grip.

I have a couple of things to do in the garage and outside over the weekend and will see how useful it can be. The first real test...

Cheers

Pete

G'Day,

Day 4

A rest day for the Signal today. Nothing to do or cut, tomorrow will be a busy one.

I am planning to add some luggage racks that I painted to the motorcycle for soft panniers. It will be a good test for the hex bit driver. I will test the hex driver and the standard bit driver inside the tool. Nothing to difficult, but there are some weird angles and other racks to work around. It will be the first "real" test and I'm looking forward to it.

Cheers,

Pete

G'Day,

Day 5

And as promised a busy day for the Signal.

Lunch duties as usual, but we know that it copes very well with that.

When I got home I headed straight for the garage. I painted an old set of pannier adaptor plates for my OEM luggage rack that I use when I put the soft luggage on the motorbike. The adaptor plates keep the bags nicely away from the exhaust and snug to the bike. We do a fair bit of gravel and the last thing you want is moving luggage. The plates were originally grey and one had to be re-welded after an off in the sand. I filled all the grinding gaps up with some steel putty and plugged some holes up too. I had some old paint left that a friend gave me for tough jobs and painted each rack two coats. They got a lot of air and heat to cure the paint properly. The last bit was adding a small "Batman logo" to the bottom of each rack.  ;)

Due to the exhaust setup on the bike, the right hand side has an slanted rack. The adaptor plate on this side bolts on from the top, while the left side bolts on from the side. This allowed me to test the Signal Hex bit in the hammer on the right hand side and the bit adaptor on the left side. I was a little concerned using a lot of torque with the bit adaptor as the tool does not close 100%. This is due to the hammer being in the way. Some of the other LM multi's I have does flex a little with the tool slightly open. The Signal held up very well. There is a bit of flex, but not nearly as much as I expected. I was able to tighten the screws very well. I checked them afterwards with a proper Allen wrench and they are as tight as I will do them up with the Allen wrench.
On the right side I used a 1/4" Hex bit. I would not have been able to use the inside bit adaptor at all as the rear rack sits in the way, so it was quite nice having the option with using the tool flat. The hex bit fits in well without any play in the hole. It does NOT stay in there though, as I mentioned in the very first post, no retaining mechanism. You can get a lot of torque this way. The whole tool fits in your hand and your strength will be the only limiting factor. I tried a small magnet I had but it was to weak and to big to get on the back of the hex hole. I suspect if you find a small enough magnet it should work well as a retaining mechanism.
I think the Hex hole is a nice to have. I cannot think of a single situation where I will carry Hex bits with me on a hike or a camp. If you keep this tool on your motorbike or bicycle it might be more useful.

Check out the pics!!!

Later tonight I will test the can opener, I have a can of tomato mix that will go into dinner. I will add a separate post for that.

Cheers,

Pete

Day 4 Continued - Can Opener Test

Dinner came and went much to the kids delight.

I had one small can to open and the Signal did that without a hitch. I have not opened a can with a Leatherman in years. I think the last one I used was on the Ol' PST II. The newer openers are MUCH better. It is the same one as in my Charge Ti. As with the bit exchanger, the tool cannot close completely with the can opener deployed. I did notice that it the lock mechanism should be in the open position, closest to the hammer. That way it creates a "rest" point for the deployed tool. I could open the can with the tool closed, no problem. In fact, I found that with the tool slightly open it was easier than the Charge for example. It works with a pull action and cut little 1/2 moons. I tried to capture it in some of the pics. Safe to say, it passed with flying colours. And this one should be important for the camping focus.

I am still looking for an excuse to use the bottle opener, but I am working 10 days straight, early morning shifts so no bottled beverages for me...

Cheers,

Pete

G'Day,

Day 5

No real challenge for the Signal today. Lunch duties as usual, I have not had to touch the blade at all and it has been used daily to cut food. Granted, it is mostly fruit and cold meats which is not that tough. I have learnt that I must wash it very well as there is quite a bit of suger in fruit and that will cause some corrosion over time. It also gets into the pivots and they become tight to open.

I did get a Lego set today that had some "tough" tape to cut.  ;) I will start building it over the weekend. I still have another set with a pneumatic system to finish first... I have a soft spot for Lego Technics sets.

I am hoping that Gohard's sheath will arrive tomorrow. The current one is holding up well, but custom is sooooooooo much better!!!

Cheers,

Pete

Yes, Gunfighter.  Well broken in!!

My riding buddy has one and swears by it. We often put in 700 km days and a good seat makes ALL the difference in the enjoyment factor. The seat I have on mine is probably the best OEM seat I have ever sat on and copes easily with the big days.

G'Day

Day 6

And the new clothes arrived!!!

I asked Gohard to make me a sheath for the Signal. I wanted a very natural looking sheath. This is the beauty of custom stuff, I could design anything I wanted - withing reason off course - and Gohard has the talent to make it. As with the Signal, I added a set of coordinates on the outside. The leather is beautifully soft and I think it will develop a very nice patina.

So, what did the Signal do today? Well not to much I'm afraid... The usual lunch duties and opening the sheath parcel. I met up with a good mate from work and he fondled the Signal for a while. I think he needs one...  :pok:

Cheers,

Pete

G'Day,

Day 7

Another easy day for the Signal. I did get to test the awl though. I left my pokey thing at home and had to improvise to eat some small blocks of cheese. The blade is to sharp, I will most certainly cut my tongue, so the awl had to do.

It sits also on the inside of the tool, but is a separate compartment. It locks with the same mechanism as the other two inner tools, but the main difference is that you can close the tool completely and lock it if you want. The bit holder and can opener does not allow for the tool to be closed completely. The disadvantage is that the awl becomes quite a bit shorter close to the hammer. There is a small "cut-out" in the hammer that caters for the awl. I tried to capture it in the pics. It is not sharp out the box, but can easily be sharpened. I have not done that yet. I don't often use a multi awl, so for my use it was sufficient.

Later I will have to cut some dinner sausages too. MMM

I will post those pics later.

Cheers,

Pete

G'Day,

Week 1 Summary

Well, One Week has already gone and the Signal has surprised me so far. I have used most of the tools, bar the saw and none of them have dissapointed me or have failed in their use. I use a blade daily for food prep, and the Signal blade is not to bad for that. For MY use a PE blade will be better, something like the Wave / Charge blade. I will in future add it and see how user friendly that is. It is not a shortcoming of the tool, I think that for its intended use, the OEM blade will do well. Originally I stated that I will keep the tool in its original form for at least 2 weeks. I am going to extend that for the full challenge and keep the tool original to the end. The January challenge I may use a modded version.

The inside tools has worked well too. When I put the racks on I did expect some tool play with the tool slightly open, but there was very little play. The HEX hole is a nice add-on. Another good pass. The can opener works very well and that is definitely a tool that should stay if you intend taking it camping or hiking. I only used the awl once today and not at awl for its intended purpose, it does make a reasonably food fork  :D. The pliers have had one work out whilst making lanyards, I will test it over the next few days.

I will do another summary at the end of Week Two.

Have a good night peoples.

Pete

G'Day,

Thanks for the kind words guys. I have been enjoying doing the thread so far. The biggest challenge is to find different stuff to do everyday.

Day 8

Today was a quiet day for the Signal. I had a busy day in the trains though. So lunch duties it was. I also got to test the little file/sharpener. It works very well on nails, but I'd hate to have to use it for significant filing. I know it is supposed to be a sharpener, but it is small and quite difficult to hold still. I guess in a pinch you can sharpen the blade with it, but you are more than likely to damage it. But then again if you are in such a desperate situation it may not matter.

Tomorrow will be a busy day for the Signal. I have three days off work and are planning some adjusting work on the motorbike and general tasks around the house. The bit driver and Hex hole should come in handy for that. I am also going to give the blade a quick strop.

Cheers,

Pete

I had the same thoughts on the little file.  That's why I put the file in place of the saw.  The little one is fine just for sharpening the blade, which I know is it's intended purpose anyway.

Spot on.

I am going to put the file back in once this Challenge is over. The Signal I will use for the January Challenge will look a little different to the original one. This month is giving me a good idea of what to change. So far it will be a PE blade and the file / saw swap.

Cheers
Yeah, I rarely, really never need the wood saw, but I do like to have one just in case.  However with the Signal, I'd rather have the file.  I can always swap it back in if I ever want to as it's an easy job.

G'Day,

Day 9

As promised this was a busy day for the Signal. It started early with some adjusting stuff on the motorbike. I bought some new boots and had to adjust the gear lever up. No problem for the Signal, I just popped the torx bit in the Hex driver hole and the adjustment was quick and painless. I still have not found a suitable magnet to stop the bit from falling out. All in good time... I also had to adjust the right hand mirror stem and brake lever, but could not find a big enough Torx bit for that, so in the end I had to use the proper tool for that.

Next up was the blade. The postman dropped off my new jacket and parcel opening duties were performed. I was amazed how easily the knife cut through the plastic and the packaging tape. Judging from these cuts I don't need to strop it. I am also re-varnishing some outside chairs, so the next duty was opening the paint tin. I tried with the awl, but was scared it will break, so I used the flat driver instead. It opened it fine, but left some battle scars on the bit. I think a pray bar or dedicated tin opener is definitely the way to go. But hey, that is not the objective of the challenge.

I also got to test the wire cutters. I had an old coat hanger lying around and decided that should be a good test. It is hard wire, but the Signal cut through there without a hitch. One thing I did notice, it is far more comfortable to have the hammer bit facing your fingers and not close to the palm when using the pliers. It tends to dig a little into the side of your hand if you keep the hammer close to your hand. If you have big hands you will definitely have to use it that way.

And that my friends concludes today's uses, I think. There are still a few hours left though.

Cheers,

Pete

Final task for today. I ended off the day with some chocolate coffee beans. I got these from a mate for my birthday. No scissors needed here, the blade is more than capable of cutting the plastic. And they are super good!!!

Have a good night folks

G'Day,

;) The coffee beans are very good. They are probably the best I have sampled for a while.

Day 10

I had a day off today and had quite a bit to do. I think the Signal is quite happy the day is nearly gone, he does look a little tired.  :D

First up was removing the soft pannier racks I fitted last week. I am using the top box again as I dont need the extra space the panniers provide. I tried a standard Hex bit extender and it was very comfortable to use. I tried different magnets on the other side of the hex hole to see it the bit will stay inside. Unfortunately it did not. I tried two different magnets: one from a jewellers kit that is used to make bracelets from (magnetite) it sort off fitted the outside hole but lacked any retaining magnetism. The second magnet I got out of a hex bit extender, but it was to big to sit inside the outside hole. I tried putting it sideways but the magnetism was not nearly enough to keep the bit in. Well I tried, and I dont have any other magnets to test with. So now I just keep my hand on the bit. Using the bit extender was very comfortable and it worked a treat.

The rest were all cutting tasks, bar one plier use. I cut up some fierce Tiger tummy rolls for lunch  :D. This is the first time I used the knife for any bready type cutting. It did very well. I did notice that the serrations tore some of the rolls, but they were VERY fresh. Added some good 'ol South African Marmite and a bit of peanut butter on the other and lunch was catered for. Then came dessert: Some Aussie Tim Tam chocolate biscuits. These are the double coated ones. You get one biscuit less, but more chocolate. I store mine in the freezer.

More cutting...
I made a safety lanyard for my PLB I carry on the bike. There is no mount available yet so I carry it on the back seat of the bike. I use a webbing belt to tie it to the seat, the lanyard is just for added security. The blade cut through the para-cord with ease and made a very neat cut. One box knot later and she will be safe on the seat. Fitting to have two "safety" tools together.

I really enjoyed using the Signal today. There was nothing it could not do, and this is still in standard form. I pocket carried it for yesterday and today and it is way more comfortable that the MUT I usually carry.

Enjoy the many pics,

Pete

G'Day

Day 11

Busy day at our house today. I had a whole bunch of things to do outside and in the garage. Naturally the Signal was by my side to help where it could.

First up was a hook on our new fence to hang our Pitcher plant. I got one of these from a colleague a while ago. I used to hang on our old fence. We since added a pool and had to replace the old timber fences to comply with Pool regulations for fence heights. The old one was also a little dilapidated. I got my son to help measure and then took some pics while I attached it. Once again I used the Hex hole in the hammer. It is my second most used tool on the Signal after the blade. The fact that you can use the standard 1/4" bits with a reasonable amount of torque is very useful. Originally I was sceptical about its addition, but now I am glad it is there. And this feature is probably the least useful in a survival or camping situation.

Second task was sawing. I got to use it!!! Yea!!!
I am making a towel hanger for around the pool. I got a few old rail spikes that I am going to put on a piece of timber and hang that on the fence. The spikes are slowly bubbling away in rust converter so I had time to saw the timber and start sanding it to add the spikes. It will be another few days before it is finished but I got the timber ready in the mean time. The saw worked a treat as all Leatherman saws. The plank is 18mm think and reasonably dry. It cut very neatly and kept to the marking line without any problems.

Next up was opening a bottle of Locktite. I am making new feet for out outdoor tables with rubbers and galvanised nuts and bolts. My new Locktite bottle had to be opened and the blade is perfect for that. I used the first big serrated bit on the blade to cut the small tab off. That worked very well, no slipping or cuts to the thumb.

And that concludes Saturday's tasks. Tomorrow I am back at work, and the usual lunch duties.

Enjoy the pics,

Pete

G'Day,

Thanks guys, taking the pics are part of the fun.

Day 13

Today I washed trains in the shed. Unlike shunting duties, I had no use for the Signal other than lunch duties. The pouch Gohard made is really nice and getting softer daily. My work shirt hangs over it so there is not to much chance of patina developing in the leather that way.

Part of the challenge is to post at least one picture a day. The weather in Sydney was pretty ordinary so I took one of my small Lego Snow Plows and got it working against the Signal  :D Needles to say, the Signal won.

Enjoy the pics,

Cheers,

Pete

Day 14

Today was another quiet day for the Signal. Nothing more than lunch duties. I have now ordered a PE Wave blade, I think it will be a better blade for my use. It should be here sometime next week.

I had to improvise a little with pictures this afternoon. With the Signal having a camping focus I decided to use my TrueUtility SporkSpoonKnifeThingy  :D in the pictures. It is still brand new and very shiny which made for a couple of takes on the pictures. I should have some better light tomorrow for outdoor pics.

Cheers,

Pete

G'Day,

Day 15

I am half way through the challenge and it has been a very good two weeks so far. I really like this tool.

Today was cutting duties only. The usual lunch fruit, but got to do more serious cutting at home. I have a MSR water bladder that I started to use when I go for rides on the motorbike. The original cap started leaking on the last ride. I managed to find a cap in Oz at a reasonable price and ordered it. The cap arrived today and fits perfectly and more importantly, it does not leak. I am planning a trip up to the Sunshine Coast over XMas and will need to carry additional water other that the 2L Camelbak I usually use. It is going to be hot and humid in Queensland. The last thing I need on a 600km ride is dehydration. So all up I will have 4L of iced water for the day. The total trip is just a tad over 1,000km which I am breaking up on the way there. However, I have to do it all in one hit back to Sydney. That will be a fun day. It will be the first time I do more than 800km in one day...

I also had to open a bag of coffee. It is the same roaster that I got the chocolate coffee beans from that I opened in one of the previous days. I LOVE the smell of freshly ground coffee!!! And this coffee is good. I already had some additional cups for the day - never to much caffeine!!!

Tomorrow I have some garden duties to do, I know there will be stuff I can use the Signal for.

Till Then, have a good evening.

Cheers,

Pete

G'Day Aloha,

I have been very happy with the tool so far. I think that using it daily has certainly changed my perceptions (I tried to keep an open mind from Day 1) about the tool. It is still a lot of $$$ for it, but I don't think it is a bad tool. There may be other offerings that will give you more options / tools for less, but that again comes down to personal choice. What I think is that a lot of hype was made through the marketing department and from what we saw initially. I am hoping this challenge will show what it can do as a daily EDC for MY needs. That is also the reason why I am going to keep it in the standard form until the challenge is complete. That way I can give MY opinion on how I found the tool during the 30 days. I will not have the chance to test it as a camping or hiking tool, however, I think that any daily use for an extended period will show any tool's usefulness and limitations.

Cheers,

Pete

G'Day,

Yep, time sure flies when we are having fun.

Day 16

I did not get to do half the stuff I planned on during the day. I have been struggling with one of our mobile network providers to give me a new SIM that actually works. It is frustrating to have to explain oneself over and over to a helpless call centre clerk half way around the world. My current phone takes two sims but being a rugged phone the back has to be screwed on and off. This was the only duty, other than lunch food preparation, I did today.

So hopefully tomorrow I will get out again. I have to put the pannier racks back on for a Christmas toy and blanket charity run on Sunday. I am looking forward to it, it will be the first time I take my son out on the motorbike. I will take some pics then too. Maybe not with the Signal deployed, the nanny state troopers might just have a hernia attack!!!

So another easy day, from a hot Sydney

Cheers,

Pete

I'm a light-ish user too and that's why I think it is a good tool for my daily needs. If I would go on a holiday I will most certainly take my Charge. G'Day

Day 17

Today was a very good day. I had a good shift at work and got to use the Signal in the garage attaching pannier racks again.

I also got to take my son on his maiden test ride before our run on Sunday. There is something special sharing passions between father and son. He off coarse loved the ride. It was very hot to start with, 38 degrees and the only jacket I had that fitted him was a semi-vented leather jacket. Even with that and a pretty red face he was smiling from ear to ear at the first water stop. We spent about an hour on the bike in and out of traffic. We then had a Subway sandwich dinner and got rained on on the way home. The temperature fell to 20 degrees. This was all in about two hours of the afternoon. All is dry now, except for our jackets and he is looking forward to a good ride on Sunday.

Have a good evening folks,

Pete

I would likely carry something more robust as well if I were traveling.  However, I think my Signal would serve me well for my needs.  I could always bring a backup multi just in case ;)  I probably will do the challenge.  I'll miss my G1 Wave though, but I really like my Signal, so I'll manage :)

G'Day,

Day 19

We had a fantastic day today.

The much awaited Annual Toy and Blanket run and the first run for our son on the motorcycle. I don't think he slept much either last night... In total we did 262km for the day. We met all the other riders about an hour away from Sydney up the Central Coast at a place called The Entrance. It is famous for Pelicans and pelican feeding. There were around 50 bikes in total - mostly Harley Davidsons. Three of us were on BMW's and there was one Bimota. Some of the bikes were decorated with XMas stuff and soft toys tied to most of them. I packed out gifts in the soft panniers. The weather could not have been any better too. We had a shortish ride to the local Salvation Army where we handed all our stuff over knowing that in a months time there will be a few more happy people sharing the festive spirit with us. It was also encouraging to see quite a few young faces and they will hopefully follow in their parents footsteps and carry on this tradition. I have been attending Toy Runs since I bought my first bike years ago in South Africa. It is good to know that there is still some humanity left in the world when I see the number of people that were there today. It certainly helps me appreciate what we have and also show the kids that life can be tough and unforgiving sometimes, BUT that there are others that will help. All in All we left feeling on a hight and with a full tummy thanks to a sausage sizzle (local Ozzie sausage in a slice of bread) they put on for us.

So today's pictures are more about the run that the Signal. It did come out this afternoon when I got to prepare our dinner. Three good size Cattleman's beef steaks for the four of us. They were no match for the sharp blade!!!

Enjoy the pics

Cheers,

Pete

Today was another very nice day in Sydney. I booked a test ride on BMW's latest Scrambler and visited the Surplus store. The bike was a hoot, pity it had knobby tires on though. I am used to a large screen and was surprised at the wind blast around 100kmh. If I needed a ride that did not involve the extensive touring I do, this will be it. And the sound WOW, Akro did a fantastic job on that!!! It is worth while riding just to hear it.

Now on to the Signal. Not to much to do today. Got to use the screwdriver to open and clean my garage remote. I also use the can opener for dinner duties. We are having tiny meatballs in tomato sauce - Italian style!!! I also stropped the blade a few times and it is good to go again.

Tomorrow may be another busy day, I have a day off and might just go for another ride!!!

Cheers,

Pete

Day 20 Continued

Got to use the Signal again. The mobile phone provider finally sent my sim card today and got the thing connected. It took a lot of patience and tongue biting on my side to get through the call. I find it hard to understand that a company that provides a service has such poor customer service. But I degress, it is connected and I don't have to chat to them for a looooooong time... I hope

I also got some MT withdrawals  :D  :ahhh Probably the downside of doing a Challenge and having to many choices!!!

I took the Charge out to pose for a couple of pics with the Signal. AHHHH Ti, how good does that feel in the hand!!! I love the Charge Ti. I also got to use a new bit in the bit kit and it also wanted in on the pictures. So without further ado here they are.

Have a good night folks.

G'Day,

Day 21

Three weeks already, wow time flies and xmas is coming too!!!

Today was a busy day for the Signal. It started off with mowing the lawn before it got to hot here. It got to 37 degrees on our patio this afternoon. I also had to put a belt rack up, and the Phillips bit got to do some work. Awl was well making holes in the soft walls and adding the rack. Some light snacks - apple and then on to dinner. We made lamb kebabs - very nice indeed.

I'm still very happy with the Signal. I keep looking for excuses to use it and usually find one here and there. Especially on my days off.

One more week to go.

Enjoy the evening

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing about being glad mowing season is over.  However, I'm not a fan of the coming season as snow is a PITA when one has to go to work and travel any considerable distance.  I would love to just stay home all winter, or at least not have to worry about how the driveway's getting plowed and having to be somewhere every day.

You need to move to Tennessee then  :D We get snow but nothing major ;) When it snows a lot here (by our standards) things just sort of shut down for a couple days and then when it melts then we get going again :like: We do have snow here where I live more than where I work (couple hours drive from home) so as long as they don't have snow I still have to get out and go though :ahhh :D

Yeah, it's funny how the south shuts down when there's a little snow
Pretty much everything goes on as usual here, other than maybe school being canceled.  Of course Mainers are used to lots of snow, but that doesn't mean I have to like it ;)

Snow?

I have to travel at least 5 hrs in winter to get to see some. We are lucky here in Sydney, winter rarely gets below 10 degrees C in the City and 0 at our place. The coldest I have seen in the 10 years we have been here is -2 degrees C in Sydney. I don't miss the cold at all - I'm a summer baby!!! That also means I can ride the motorbike all year long. Thank goodness for heated grips.

With the great weather we are having I cook outside all the time. As for mowing, I don't have to much grass left. Put a pool in last winter and that cut my backyard in half.

G'Day

Day 22

Last day off at home before going back to work. Today was another scorcher in Sydney with temp well above 35 degree C by lunch time. We got some reprieve about an hour ago with a decent storm and a drop of 14 degrees. It is much better outside now, except for the wind and rain.

I had only one task for the Signal today. I had to tighten a screw on my shaving mirror, which I think should probably get a good dollop of LockTite, it always works itself loose. I had to use the bit in a 90 degree angle as a full extended tool will not fit in. I usually use a Pulse that is next to my bed, and that one too needs to be opened only 1/2 way. It also went for a little ride on the bike again. I am looking for some brackets to mount additional fog lights on the bike and need a specific size u-bracket. That search was not successful, eventually the heat won and I came home.

The rest of the pictures are just posing pics. I got out my Old Casio G-Shock Wademan. It was part of the original Master Of G Series released in 1999. The one I have is a limited edition ARTI (American Rescue Team International) and comes with a Kevlar strap. I was also the first G-Shock that had a Compass fitted. It only gets limited wrist time, it is big, but surprisingly light. The other watch is a ProTrek PRG-50. The first Solar ProTreks. This one has had a new battery and seal fitted earlier this year. It is one of my favourite watches and gets lots of wrist time.

Tomorrow back at work...

Cheers,

Pete

G'Day,

Day 24

I spent the day in the train sheds shunting. We had a fairly quiet day with just a few shunts, divisions and an amalgamation. I moved a train a few time in and out of the wheel lathe (where they check the bogies and the wheels) which was quite challenging at times. There are spots on the wheels and they have to line up to certain markers on the lathe. Getting 160T to stop on an inch can be tough. A few choice words by the shunter and the one fitter and we got it all sorted.

The Signal was relegated to lunch duties only. I did get to show and tell with a good mate that I am trying to convince that he needs a Signal.  :D

The pictures today are taken with two polished tools I have: a Sideclip that started its life as a Matt version and an OG Wave. Tomorrow should be some real work in the garden and the garage. Enjoy the pics.

Cheers,

Pete

G'Day,

Thanks for the comments and the likes guys.

Day 25

Today was a busy day for the Signal. We spent the morning in the garden replanting some fruit trees and generally tidying up after the pool was put in a few months ago. The garden and lawn is slowly recovering now that the weather is getting warmer. First up was cutting duties and this time I appreciated having a serrated blade. I opened a couple of potting soil bags and cut some old cable ties. I have been keeping the blade pretty sharp so cutting duties are quick and easy.
Next up was sawing an old rosebush up. The saw works very well, even for a left paw!!!  ;) I had to wash it with soap to get the wet residue off, I don't like leaving any tools on the Multi's dirty, especially plant material. The bits will start corroding.

I also finished one of the the towel racks I started a week ago. The awl came in handy to remove the timber from the drill bit. I needed a 20mm hole to attach the rail spikes too. I was originally going to paint them, but the rust converter did it's magic so well that I am going to leave them and see how they weather. I did the small one first just to see how it will look like mounted on the fence. I think it came out pretty good. I have painted 5 more spikes with the rust converter and will put them up during the week. The timber I used is the same as the fence and I hope it will weather at a similar rate. An 8mm socket later plus the Signal hex adaptor and the rack is on the fence.

I am really enjoying the Signal. I was going to replace the saw with a file, but are having second thoughts now. The saw has come in handy a few times now. The hex bit/hole is a very clever and handy tool on the Signal. It has proved itself as a good daily EDC for me so far. If I compare it to the MUT or Charge that I often carry I would have had to do an extra trip or two to the garage to get the correct tools out. And all this fits snugly in my pocket with the handy clip.  ;)

I will split the pics over two posts.

Cheers,

Pete

I was back at work today, so lunch duties for the Signal. I did get to have a look at the spikes that have been painted with the Rust Converter. They look good and I will be able to finish the towel racks during the week. Today's pics are posing only.

G'Day,

Day 27

Few days left, and not to many tasks. I had a quiet day at work with the usual lunch duties for the Signal. I also added the pannier racks back on the bike for an upcoming trip. I tried a small rare earth magnet but that did not keep the hex bit in the hole. I will have to keep hunting.

Enjoy the evening,

Pete

Pete,

As to how to hold your bit holder in the Signal...what about drilling n tapping a hole underneath, then making a little wing-screw type of set screw to put in there to tighten when using the bit holder?

Ok, in this picture, on the left side, you have the hex hole for your bit holder...

Coming from the left, the bottom of the "hammer", could you drill and tap a hole for a set screw that when tightened, held the bit holder in place?

Then you could add a "wing" (like a wing nut...)to that set screw so you could tighten by hand.

G'Day,

Cheers,

Pete

Right, I got you now. The only problem I can see is working around the little bit of wire that keeps the tool in a closed position. It is not visible on the pic, bit slides down the groove under the hammer. I will have a look at the diameter and see what small size it will be.

Cheers,

Pete

I will have a look at what is available here. The plastic seems very "resistant" to dye, mine went from yellow to a few shades of green before I nuked it with a near 100% solution of dye.

Make sure you remove the ferro rod before you hit it with the dye. I like the black too, I think with all black replacement/donor tools from a BO Wave the tool will look really good, something like a BO Signal!!!

Day 28

Four weeks as of today. Just three more days left to complete the challenge.

Today was another quiet day. Lunch duties, and this time I have a pic of it  ;) Then I had to remove some parts from an old blow-up boat. Nice sharp blade came in handy.

That's it for today,

Day 29

My parcel from Loki arrived today. I bought a Wave 154CM blade to replace the Signal blade with. The Signal blade is good, but for my daily needs I prefer a PE blade. I saw that Texas TC make a Damascus blade for it which looks awesome, it is also a PE blade, but it is not cheap. It would be nice if they made a standard SS blade without the serrations. For now the Wave blade will suffice. Tasks for the Signal today was only lunch duties and parcel opening. Not to much on the second last day though...

Cheers,

Pete

I saw that Texas TC make a Damascus blade for it which looks awesome, it is also a PE blade, but it is not cheap. It would be nice if they made a standard SS blade without the serrations. For now the Wave blade will suffice. Tasks for the Signal today was only lunch duties and parcel opening. Not to much on the second last day though...

Cheers,

Pete

G'Day,

Day 30

Last day of the Challenge. It was a quiet day for the Signal with only lunch duties and then some posing. The last pictures I include are with a survival tin a mate of mine put together. It has most of the stuff we need to survive except food and water.  :D

So, what about this Signal MT then? Is it Good? Is it Bad?

I like it, I like it a lot. It has done everything I needed to do in the last month without any hesitation or complaints. I used every bit on it except the ferro rod and each one was up to the task with the usual Leatherman quality. It fitted my light carry duties with ease. The function that surprised me the most was how handy the 1/4" hex driver is. With this little hole I managed to save a few walks to the garage. The only downfall of it is that it is not magnetised and one can drop the bits. It did happen to me once but after that no issues, I knew what to expect. I could use torx bits to sockets, all without any problems and apply a reasonable amount of torque. The blade is good, but not for me EDC needs. I prefer a PE blade and that is the only thing I am going to change on it. The Wave / Charge blade does fit in, and I will update the thread once I have done the exchange. I would like to see a PE blade as an option, but for the given focus the serrated blade is OK. I think putting an edge on the serrated bit will be interesting.
It is a light tool and does not feel overly bulky in a sheath or clipped in a pair of jeans. The pouch that Gohard made has bedded in very well and so comfortable I don't notice it at all.

The plastic bits are OK for their intended purpose, but as a file I would prefer a dedicated one. Again a Wave / Charge file will bolt in right where the saw sits. Changing the saw to a file was one mod I considered, but for now keep the saw in there. It was a very handy tool in the garden the last few weekends. When the tool is apart I want to see if the Surge Blade Exchanger fits in where the was is. If so, we will have the best of both worlds. In saying that, modding is a personal choice and trying to change the Signal to another more user friendly Multi might not be the cheapest option to go about it. You are better off buying a Wave / Rebar. I was going to add a scissors inside, but in this whole month never had the need for one. I have a SAK in my lunchbox with a scissors so I'll leave this one for now too. It is easier just to carry my Charge.

This was a very good month. I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and updating the thread daily. Some days it was challenging just to come up with creative pictures, but then we are here to get outside of our comfort zone!!!

Lastly, thanks for all the comments and the  :like:

Enjoy the last official pics.

Thanks

A question for the Signal modders: I went ahead and swapped that blades out last night. The OEM blade is quite a bit thicker that the Wave blade. It also touches the Awl when closed and that is probably why the blade has the strange bevel to it. Do you need to add an extra washer or two? For now the swap was reversed as I don't want to damage the edge on the PE blade. I will see if I have the correct size washers in the garage before attempting to swap the blades out again.

Cheers,

Pete

Thanks Poncho.

We definitely get a good feel for any Multi after 30 days. I will most likely keep using it on a very regular basis.

I'm not sure on this as I didn't change my blade, but I would guess a washer may be necessary as you said.

Glad to hear that you are going to continue EDCing it some  The 30 day challenges can either make or break a carry :D You can definitely get a feel for that particular tool in that length of time and usually know all the pros and cons :tu:

G'Day,

Well I played again with the two blades today. I found an additional bronze washer from a MUT and added it to the Signal. The play issues I had disappeared, but the edge still rubs against the awl. I also have another 1mm washer (difference between the Signal blade and the Wave blade) but it is to big and the locking mechanism cannot clear it. Tomorrow I might go see the nuts and bolts man to see if he can help with a thicker bronze washer. The blade also rubs agains a small metal tab on the awl side, circled in the last pic, not to clear though...

So back to the OEM blade it is...

Cheers

Pete

Me too, the fact that LM is in imperial makes it difficult in a metric country. I do have a Plan B, but will keep looking for now.

Awesome writeup Pete. Didn't follow the whole thread daily. Been very busy at work. Will read it once I get a long break.

Thank you.

Pour a good beverage first, "stukkie boerewors" and have a read!

The sheath is now well bedded in, I love it.

Sheath carry is for me but I do love a good clip when I just want to grab a MT and go
