I bought Swedish military winter coats years ago from SG, wore them a bunch and they are still in great shape....although I "out grew" them....my grand kids still wear then when they come over. That northern European surplus gear is tops.

That's a nice looking axe

Thx Steve!!! They should be here later this week or next!!

I placed a order for two of the used axes....didn't really see a size for the "NEW" hatchet and really don't think I need something that small. Also ordered some other items I've had my eye on. But not the surp German Binoculars....been wanting those for awhile but can't swing them just yet. Probably should have gone with the buyers club offer but I need to spend money with them like I need a hole in my head.
-
Congrats!!

They're here!

It's a nice ax for $19.95!

That sounds Finnish to me.
Its a pretty good bargain for a properly forged axe. :tu:

From what I've read other places, this is the 2nd or 3rd time these have been offered and they always sell out really fast.
Added:
The new military hatchet is still in stock.

Maybe I should have ordered 3 or 4 instead of 2.....ah well maybe next time. Hope one of my 2 is a good one at least. Something I learned a long time ago, when buying surplus get a few and sort from there. Esp when talking about a $100+ ax for $20....
Still waiting on mine.
Did yours come with sheaths like was pictured?

Here's a pretty good thread on the SQ axes over on bushcraftusa.

Some beauties and a few duds so far....

Just opened my box up! One in like new condition with leather cover can make out HB in a circle on one side so that makes it a Hults bruk I'm guessing.....The other has no leather cover and is loose in the eye( will rehang and oil and that should fix it right up) and has what looks like "KB44" stamped behind the eye on the butt with the 3 crowns right under it?
Its either KA44 or KB44...will research further. Both bits are excellent! I'm very pleased for the money what I got, the axe is a very good length.
Only thing I find a little weird is how the head is tipped a bit forward on both of mine. The blade is not perpendicular to the handle at least by my eye. Anybody else seeing this?
ETA: looked a little closer, The HB haft is warped but may be able to "warp" it back...I hope....

Finally a "day off"...gonna work on my axe handles today, strip, stain and oil is the plan. The axe that had the loose head tightened right up, our place here is fairly humid so it didn't surprise me too much.
-
I plan on pulling the head off one of the axes I got to rehang the head and put a new wedge/keys in.
Will anybody be in need of handle templates while I have the head off? Only thing I would want in return is $1 donation back to the site here. Just thought I would throw that out as an offer.
-
Looks like the new ones are back in Stock, and there is free shipping now

Had to hide in the basement for a bit on Thanksgiving day before I got thrown out of the kitchen.....got a good tracing of the handle while I had the head pulled off the one ax. Re-hung the head and put a new wedge in and cut off the excess stick out off. Looks great now. The ax with the warped handle was straightened out after some heat gun and water work and a overnight with C clamps on the bench. Plan on staining and treating with boiled linseed oil.
I know the stain isn't really needed but even with a test of BLO the handles are still very "blonde"

heh sorry, I'll get some pics up soon now that the holidays have settled down.
Any word on how the steel of these surplus axes compare to the commercial axes being offered? In the long run I want one of the GB Forest axes but I realize that what I have now is just as good though might not have the same lines as what I kind of lust for.
-
Hard to say for certain on the steel. I've got a small felling axe from a random Swedish maker and it's definitely got a good bit of steel on it. Though it doesn't quite give the same feel as when I'm putting an edge on my GB small forest axe. So; I'd say very good, but hard to be as good as GB.
