Title: The Skeletool is growing on me
Post by: 3rdpig on October 05, 2013, 07:05:30 PM
I've been sitting here wondering why I left my Skeletool out of my Sale/Trade post.

When it first came out I didn't even want it, but when I saw it on sale for $29.99 at the local Frys Electronics store, I grabbed one to try.  And since then it's become my "lazy day" tool.  A tool to carry when I don't plan on having to use tools.  I know, that's damning with faint praise, but that's the niche the Skeletool has found with me.  It has the bare minimum I want from a pliers based tool, it's easy to carry and can get simple, easy jobs done.

Anyone else feel this way about it?

Selling my Skeletool? That would be absurd! It has gathered sentimental values and has cool stories attached to it over the years. Sorry, but it is not for sale.

Mine has neither cool stories or sentimental value, nor to be frank, is it a particularly good tool.  It doesn't even have half the tools I consider necessary for an EDC tool and the CE knife blade is barely adequate (and that's being kind).

And mine's not for sale either.

Love mine, all three of them, there a little light duty but there not loaded with tools that I'll never use, so what's the seance of carrying them? And each have there level, ones my EDC, another fits in my small carry, and lastly the mini one is more for just a little uses.. And no not for sale! Lol, JR

You mean you don't need a tool for when you don't need a tool?

What can I say?  Canadians!   :pok:

I don't love it either to be honest, just that it fills a niche that, at least until the Skeletool arrived, I didn't even know I had.  I've got to give points to a company for creating or defining niches then filling it successfully.

Gerber would have scored a lot of points with me if they had put a usable phillips bit on the Octane and made it a little beefier.  But as it ships it's a non starter for me.  They need to release a redesigned Octane that's a fusion of the Octane and the MP400 in the same form factor as the existing Octane.  Give it scissors, a usable 2.5d phillips bit of decent length, an improved main blade and a thicker steel in the body and blade pivot.  I'd buy at least one of those and possibly two.

Or Sog could kick their Power Duo quality up a notch or two.

Pretty much my feelings as well.  Of course being self employed AND living in a house with two women, I'm never, ever really "off work".

LOL

there really is no off work there is always something that needs to be done.

LOL

I put my skeletool cx in my pocket after this thread got me thinking about it.

I got it a micra and a Wenger ti 2 .

my rambling ⬇⬇⬇⬇⬇⬇
this is my second skeletool cx . I bought a combination edge model used it so much I wore the liner lock and bit holder out sent it to leatherman and got a refurbished plane edge back.

I have yet to break one and I've used them pretty rough.

a excellent tool in my opinion.

I like my Skeletool quite a bit. If LM made one with scissors it'd be an EDC candidate, but that one lack is what has me carrying my Gerber Balance instead.

I agree the Octane has areas that let it down  :tu:

On some pieces, the pliers can inadvertently deploy in the pocket - however I know I can fix that with a file, and put a notch in the handles for the pins to engage on. The head of the Phillips is indeed misshapen (though somehow it has worked for me on the rare times I've needed it) and once again I can fix it with a file and get the tip profile adjusted. With a little time and a little effort I can get an Octane to perform very well. Unfortunately I cannot fix the failings of the Skeletool with a file  The Skele's failings are primarily ergonomic, and the tool seems to sit well for some people and not for others. I for one cannot abide it, and the most practical thing I can do to remedy it is use something else  :-\

I'm not trying to talk people out of the Skele - it's well worth trying one for a while - but for those who don't get one with it the Octane can be an excellent alternative, albeit with a little fine tuning  :)

I would love to see a knifeless version with scissors though  ;)

I just ordered a Skeletool today after seeing yesterday that white Skeletool in Oblivion.  That's how I ride.

i got the skele because it was interesting and i wanted something bare bones for off day carry.  i like having a slimmer tool should the need arise.  the pliers suffice when fingers wouldn't stand a chance.  the locking blade is very useable for the work it sees in my off days and im never without a SAK anyway so barring complete failure its fine.  id reach for the driver much faster than the one my explorer and if i chose i could bring a bit card with not much extra bulk.

question for the nay sayers, is any juice THAT much better plier wise or blade wise? i have surmised that im not much of a scissor user and while nice to have JIC im perfectly fine without.

i like my skele and while it always is coupled with a SAK i find it a very easy tool to have on me and mine is also not for sale.

I don't think the Juice is that much better at all  Bottom line is, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks - if the Skele works for you, that's all that matters  :tu:

I own a Juice S2 but no Skeletool so I can´t really compare them. But I am sure the Skeletool is not a bad tool. I just don´t like its look and the even bigger problem for me is the one hand opening and locking blade which falls into a gray zone of german knife laws and could bring me into trouble. That is the main reason why I don´t and will never own one.  ;)

i recently got a CS4 and like it other than having to get out the flat drivers.  im sure the pliers are very useable for light use or when fingers just wont do but i haven't had the chance as of yet.  i like the blade and while it will only see simple tasks its nice.  my skele slips into my back pocket and has seen more use as ive had it longer.  i like its funky look and simplicity.  my off day carry tends to be several slimmer or lighter tools rather than one large tool or tools.

the skele is a winner for me for sure and rotates in my off day carry with the PPP and ParaTool.  i have carried the juice cs4 a few times and like it so far.

I really like the looks of the Skeletool and wouldn't mind getting one someday. I think having one paired with a SAK would be good enough for me.

I love my skeletool.  It was the first Leatherman that got this addition going.  I love the minimalist design.  For the tiny amount of tools it has gotten me out of quite a few jams on the job site.

Love the Skeletool - really the only LM that I feel comfortable just carrying loose in my pocket, with no clip/pouch.
