Title: Who EDC's a Vic Explorer?
Post by: SteamKit on December 14, 2008, 07:13:46 AM
Does anybody carry an explorer? Please! Share your experiences? Have you ever found it wanting for a task? If so, what task?

I sometimes edc an Explorer. It is a pretty popular choice.

I initially wanted it just for the end-mounted phillips, but I discovered that the can opener/phillips driver works very, very well on phillips screws. Though I became less interested in the inline driver, I later found the magnifier to be of much more use than I could have ever imagined.

Now I am lean more towards SuperTinkers or Climbers, which are like Explorers without the philips magnifier layer.

The main tool that I often wish I had when using the Explorer was the metal file, with the wood saw following as a distant second. That's why my other edc was a Ranger for long time.

Even still, I would likely go for the Explorer unless size is an important issue. I have never heard of anyone who regretted buying one. They are pretty great and everyone should try an Explorer at least once.  :D

Incidentally, make sure to study up on the difference between the new and old magnifiers and make sure to get the style you prefer.

The Explorer is the perfect STARTER SAK for anyone, any age, any where :tu:

I like them a lot.  I would prefer a Yeoman for being a layer thinner but I haven't got round to that yet.  The new magnifier seems to get a lot of bad press but I'm a fan.  The larger diameter lens is just more useful to my mind.  Remember you can also get a Explorer Plus as standard.

Both the new and old style magnifiers are good.  You really need to have a play with both though to see which is better suited to your tasks.

I think the Explorer is a great model and I have EDC'ed mine on many occasions.  It's one of the SAKs I regularly rotate through in my EDC.

I almost never EDC a SAK alone.. But, whenever I carry my Std. Spirit, the Explorer or Scientist always comes along!

Yup, excellent SAK, probably my favorite (next to a real Yeoman!!).  The plus has LOTS of tools, and I EDC it all the time as a companion to my other multis.

Oo! Thank you all, glad to get a good response. I think I'll be trying to get one for Christmas then. I'm interested in the explorer mostly because it ought to pair up rather nicely with the compliment of tools on the SwissTool Plus and the Skeletool. Redundancy isn't too much of an issue because I'm the type of person to carry around a couple knife blades for various things...the phillips, well, I can use one for rough stuff and one for more delicate things. I wish I could find something smaller with a magnifier but ah well. Thank you kindly.

Scientist's do come up on eBay from time to time and you could always shoot a PM to FelineVet to see if he has one in at the moment.

The Scientist is a nice compact model with main blade, combo tool, in-line Phillips, magnifier and corkscrew.  See here:  http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Scientist

Another smaller, but retired, model is the Passenger.  Just another one you might like the look of.

Yeoman

Please note that both these are my own home mods and not originals.

PS Gadget Guy that Scientist looks great in white.

Those are all lovely, and I like those white scales. Out of all of them, the Yeoman offers the tool compliment that interests me both...although someday I may have to save up for a custom SAK. No knives, hook, magnifier, scissors, awl, corkscrew...dedicated bottle opener, maybe one of those pill counters as a stirry rod. I ever get access to a machine shop I'd like to try making something like the corkscrew off a Leatherman Juice.
