That's a good looking pinchy Cap, how are you liking it?
No idea, sorry. AHB might know, he's got quite a few. Might sound silly but have you tried metric keys?
I got this Dime a month ago!Looks great! :D What do you think of it? Looks like the bottle opener might poke you a bit, if carried in the pocket?

Lime Green Gerber MP600 (and the finish looks to be the same as on my orange and Red MP600s, so possibly an "employee custom job" that escaped ? )
Sorry, before you ask - no can do photos :(
Is that the start of a collection Cap? :D

here ya go capt. i have found the MP are like the PSTs where some variations don't quite fit neatly within the versions. i have made it no secret i love Mr Pinchy and glad to see another digging them as well.
Another Multi-Plier showed up today! :mail:

Very nice Cap.
I think it's about time I get another Gerber. I really need a MP600, and an MP400, so I should try and get one of those. I might have to look at what I have and don't use and see if I can come up with a trade.

The newer MP600's are great as well, but if you decide to get a newer model I would look at the MP600 Pro Scout. :tu: I personally don't own a Pro Scout (yet), but DEF turned me onto them. They have a Saw which the regular MP600 does not.
Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
If your looking for a older model the Mr. Pinchy is great! :tu:
WOW those are awesome CAPT. I wouldn't be able to bring myself to open them either. what a great score :2tu: I will be watching what you come up with next very closely. this thread is getting very interesting with those additions.
Thant's a great score Capt'n
I'm finding the older models - not just Gerber, far more rewarding.
Enjoy :tu:

That's a great present!
Just got the Gerber Otis kit in the mail today. Dirty but looks to be unused. The pouch is currently taking a bath with my work clothes :D
Pics to follow, if all goes to plan I intend to upload a group pic of all my 400's/600's.
That's a very impressive collection Tosh. :salute:

Just got a MP600 Pro Scout to replace my MIA Leatherman OHT from my parents for Christmas. A sweet tool for sure.

The Pro Scout is a real MT classic IMO. I'm sure you'll get lots of good use out of it. :tu:Broke it in yesterday while returning from the folks home on the ladies car. I was impressed. It doesn't show grease like the Wave does.
My parents couldn't find a OHT out where they live but found a MP600 which works. :tu:
If you knew where I grew up you'd know you'd be lucky to find a Wave or MP400 anywhere within 300 miles. My parents couldn't find a OHT out where they live but found a MP600 which works. :tu:

Got me a beater Color Guard in Blue.
Got me a beater Color Guard in Blue.
I'm jealous. It might be a beater, but it's way better than mine (I've been looking for a blue MP600 for quite a while, with zero success).

Sorry to hear that. Are they really that hard to find? Maybe I should put it away instead up beating it up any more.
If I ever do get rid of it I will give you the first shot at it. :tu:
Thanks for the info. :tu: I started a thread wondering about the colored MP600's. Do you have a link to any more info on these? Thank you.
Got these as well.
Those Gerber Colored MTs are great looking, nice grab Capt. I haven't seen any colored Gerbers on the bay either but I also only look for Mr Pinchy. Those are great looking!! Now I have something else to add to the must get list.
Got two gerber lately. One Flik and one Mp 600.
The Flik isn`t so bad. Ok, the small middle tools are difficult to get out but it feels really sturdy and I like the plier/handle function. And all tools on the outside.I like.
Thanks for the info. :tu: I started a thread wondering about the colored MP600's. Do you have a link to any more info on these? Thank you.
I added in some links to older MTo threads on coloured Gerbers to your new thread.
BTW Congratulations on your finds (nice photos), your ebay-fu is obviously better than mine because I didn't see either the blue one or the red one offered for sale (maybe I'll have to get you to give me some tips ;) ).

Very nice! I swear the Mr. Pinchy never gets old. There is just something about them that makes me WANT MORE!!!!!!

To me they are very much like the PST in that way. So many variations within variations and finishes and plier heads, etc etc.
Yes for sure. I like the feel of the steel and like how they can be totally disassembled easily for cleaning and service. No bells and whistles just good ole fashioned usability in these.
MultiLite :ahhhIs it actually smaller than the Fit? You asked me before, and I thought it was, but didn't have a Fit of my own to be sure.
WH867 Dennis posted pics of his a couple years ago, and I've been on the lookout for one ever since. But guess what! :nanadance:NIce one :tu: These aren't very common and so take some finding.
Gerber MP600, First Production Run
Check out those grey lock releases, and stainless plier head clips. :multi:
I'll dig the Fit out of its lead lined chamber later for a photo :tu:MultiLite :ahhhIs it actually smaller than the Fit? You asked me before, and I thought it was, but didn't have a Fit of my own to be sure.

I have one the same (NIB), and also another one (on the way) that appears to be a bit different. In the (less then fantastic) photos, it looks like it has black lock releases and black plier head clips (along with wear and rust and marks- but it was fairly cheap). I haven't seen one like this before:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/331094565941 (click on "See original listing" to see all photos).
What say you all ? I can see the silver plier head clips being easily changed for the more common black ones, but not the lock releases. Maybe they ran out of grey ones near the end of the FPR run, or just decided to go with black ?
I have a blunt-nose FPR that has black plastic and black clips.
Hey on a related note, check out that decal down in the corner of my photo. It is one of those funny pictures that kids get from gumball machines, where if you tip it slightly the image changes. One view shows the MP600 jaws in, move it slightly and the image shows the jaws out. It came in the box with the tool. I thought it was pretty neat. :)Hey, a click-less flicky ! tres 8) ! But the only draw-back is that it doesn't annoy every person within ear-shot as you flick the jaws in and out :pok:
True enough! And not nearly so likely to get you fired from your job for excess flicking! :D
lol. No point in having a flicky Gerber if you don't use it to annoy your nearest and dearest. :D
:woohoo:Yep, and I can see me needing a needle nose one, and all the other variations. :D
another convert. :D

I see more Gerbers in your future. :D
I really think I will Tom!:woohoo:Yep, and I can see me needing a needle nose one, and all the other variations. :D
another convert. :D
That you do. >:D Enjoy the Gerber Derek!
Then there are all the Mr Pinchy variations, also the MPT when you feel the need for a change of pace, then ....... :pok:
My last Gerber :)
Well done Loki ! Three hard to find flicky Gerbers there (Mr Pinchy's v1 and v2, and an MP600 cable cutter as well) :multi:Ie MP600 were in version cuble cuter? or is it Custom?
And Bob has an excellent eye. I think Loki has uncovered a new (to me, at least) variant on the version 1 Mr Pinchy  . All 4 of my v1s ( FPR and non-FPR) have the missing cut-outs and mismatched nail nicks the same as Bob's.
Yet another variant to keep an eye out for [sigh .....]
Ie MP600 were in version cuble cuter? or is it Custom? As far as I know the Cable Cutter was a regular production variant of the MP600, not a mod. I have one, and there are a few with other MTo members as well. But they aren't at all common.
I'm gonna use it a bit then clean it up. :) Everything gets used at least once!
I'm now surfing ebay for MP600's.
Newest Mr. Pinchy. Took all the tools out and cleaned it up good. Thanks JD. :tu:
I assume it has been sent in. Neither me or the last owner did, but at some point I assume it was.
I'm sure I have asked this before but do you have a link to all the Mr. Pinchy info. I would like to get more familiar with the different versions and the timeline. :tu:
I just got my hands on a Recoil from a trade with SolomonKane79.
As neat as it is, it is most certainly destined to head on down the road after I've fiddled with it a bit.
The spring-loaded pliers are pretty awesome... to extend. Getting them back in is less fun. The combo tools are some of the more interesting attempts at cramming a bunch of function into small spaces I've ever seen. I'm not sure I'd call them 'sucessful' attempts, but I applaud the effort.

To store the pliers away I pinch the top and bottom of the jaws with thumb and forefinger just past the tip, rather than pressing down on the very tip itself. Much more comfortable. Not sure I'm explaining that very well though, am I making sense?

Just got a MP1 from UPS!! :tu:
Just got a MP1 from UPS!! :tu:
Well, I have not had a chance to use it, but I can give some first impressions!
1. It seems to be very well made and I like the handles. As far as its design goes, it is different. Gerber is good at making tools that do not look like others!
2. They are one of the few to get the bit adapter part right! It used standard 1/4 inch driver bits. No proprietary holders or adapters. Big thumbs up to them for this!
3. Both blades are razor sharp right out of the box
4. I like the sheath! Would be better if it had a spot for some extra driver bits.
5. The scraper tool is sharp, and I have not seen that on any other multitool.
The bad?
1. The two flathead screwdrivers cannot be pulled up unless the blade or driver is pulled open. I saw no place to get my fingernail on to open them. It was late, so maybe it was just me!! They also could have left one off and put scissors on the thing!
2. A bit over priced. The box says it is made from domestic and foreign components, then assembled in the US. I would have expected a tool at this price range to be 100 percent US manufactured. There is no way of knowing what was made here or elsewhere. I would guess the knife blades where made here since I have never owned a Chinese knife that was as sharp as these blades are.
Just my 2 cents!!
Aaaaaand, how do you like it? :)

I'm really liking them... The Compact is especially cool for it's size. I see it being carried often. That is if Mrs D doesn't commandeer it... I saw her playing with it earlier.
:drink: I have only one wrinkle with either MT... The blade on the 600 is a bit odd.
I've been lucky in that all my MP 600's and the one MP 400 all have the older clip point style blades. Only my Recoil and Suspension have the newer Wharncliffe style blades. I don't remember ever using those blades for anything yet so I can't really comment on them in the good or bad.:drink: I have only one wrinkle with either MT... The blade on the 600 is a bit odd.Yea I hate the new style blades as well. :twak:

Thanks guys. Im really liking it and excited to have it. :tu:
2 more mr pinchys still on the way. :ahhh
Really wish I could get better pictures of this but figure you guys will still enjoy it!

Any chance of more picks of the sheath setup? Looks interesting but hard to make out.
There have been some great pickups lately everyone. :tu: Nice to see newer members taking the flicky plunge and liking it as well. :) Now, you all need Balances, Octanes, and MPTs....... >:D

Cap'n, what's the shape of the edge on the blade and awl?
That's got to be the earliest version of the bit adaptor/coupler I think I've ever seen. I wonder if it fits on the Phillips of the MP600?

I have what I think is the same bit kit (it came with a V1 FPR Multi-Plier/Mr Pinchy). It fits the several MP600s I tried it on, and all my Mr Pinchy's that I tried (V1 FPR, V1, V2, V3, V4, V5). The phillips drivers and the bit adapter are both slightly rectangular in cross section, so unless you try it the right way it feels like it doesn't fit.

Congrats Greg! :tu: Good to know there is more than one out there. (Please give a shout if you should happen to see another) :drool:Thanks. Those v1 Mr Pinchys aren't popping up as often as they used to, so it was good to catch this one.
That's awesome Greg! :tu:
We need pictures immediately. :pok: :D
I know you dont do pictures. I did forget when I asked though. Thanks for keeping us informed on the Mr. Pinchy variants. :tu:
Not sure if most would classify it as a multitool, but I picked up an Obsidian today. Neat tool! Has a nice blade, two screwdrivers and a bottler opener. :tu:
Well, here's another new (to me) variation of the 600. Before it was called the Multi-Plier 600, Gerber had a unique name for the different versions. One of them was the "Archer." I thought it simply referred to the blade loadout. But no, it seems that the Archer also has a set of machine-cut notches beneath the plier pivot that are intended to be used for crimping bowstring nocks.
I never knew that before. :)
I received a Nautilus and a Freehand today.
I played around with the Nautilus long enough to annoy my wife already. 8)
Finally got a Diesel!
Gotta say,I'm liking it so far :tu:

That's been a bit of an epic journey hasn't it. :-\ Good to hear you like it though, imagine if, after all you've been through, you didn't get on with it at all? :ahhh
I'm glad you're liking it. It's a well-built tool. :)Finally got a Diesel!

Have to say,I do like it...its so like a MP600,but so different too. Kind of like the 600 is a Land Rover, the Diesel us a Range Rover?

Thanks J-sews.
It´s my bad concious of having three samples of the same tool that drives me to discover the differeces to justify
for myself. :D
There's always another variant to be had, isn't there ? (if you look closely enough at the differences, anyway) :pok:
Think...hope...!, I've just ordered a MP600ST. Odd Amazon listing...shows a normal 600, but description is of the sight tool! Anyway,at £38,I can complain!I've had my eye on that one but I'm waiting to hear some sort of review before buying one. The only problem I have with it right off is that part-serrated blade but I might be willing to overlook that.

Yeah, but you can carry a folder with it. I use the mt blades for scappers and the such.

My BM 531 or Spyderco FRN Native are my carry folders but I don't always carry one.Yeah, but you can carry a folder with it. I use the mt blades for scappers and the such.
This. There are only two MT's that I carry that see regular knife use, my Octane and my ALX. And even then, I'm more likely to use a SAK or slippie for cutting than them. When carrying an MP, a PST, MPT, Fuse, or whatever, I go to whatever folder I'm carrying first. SAKs and MT's are there more for the tools than the blades. I'll just keep repeating to myself, "I'm not a multitool guy, I'm a knife guy" while ignoring 40+ SAKs and more Gerbers, LMs, SOGs, etc than I care to admit to...... ;)

At the least there's a slipjoint on me at all times. That's a habit I got into a long time ago. There's usually an OHO folder too, but not always.

Although partially serrated, I do like the blade as it is a fair bit longer than standard MP 600 ones - A plain edge of this size and a serrated one like on standard MP600s would be a good combo, IMHO.I can almost forgive the part-serrated blade but that sight tool is taking up so much space where they could put a file. I like the file...
You are right that there really is no use for the sight tool in civilian life.
The longer Phillips is brilliant, though.
All in all, my old MP 600 Scout did win and I do not carry the MP 600 ST.

And Bob has an excellent eye. I think Loki has uncovered a new (to me, at least) variant on the version 1 Mr Pinchy  . All 4 of my v1s ( FPR and non-FPR) have the missing cut-outs and mismatched nail nicks the same as Bob's.

And today I got a 4th variant of the Version 1 Mr Pinchy !! From looking at photos I think some MTo members have this variant but they haven't noticed the difference (yet) ;)
So now there are (at least)
V1.0 FPR (First Production Run marking) with only 1 cut-out per handle
( nail nicks on the wrong side of the blades and in the wrong place anyway )
V1.1 (standard production - no FPR marking) with only 1 cut-out per handle
( nail nicks on the wrong side of the blades and in the wrong place anyway )
V1.2 (standard production - no FPR marking) with only 1 cut-out per handle
( nail nicks on the right side of the blades and in the correct place )
V1.3 (standard production - no FPR marking) with 2 cut-outs per handle
( nail nicks on the right side of the blades and in the correct place )
So, any advance on 4 variants ? :pok:
(these early Mr Pinchy's are getting a bit like early PSTs with all the different variants - except they are MUCH cheaper to buy :D )

I know there is one, bu I can´t find the thread listing the Mr. Pinchy variants - I´m trying to date my 2 and the Fiskars Pinchy I got.
Oh, I hacve to say something on topic, too! The last Gerbert I got was a Strata I received in a trade.
It now resides in a Skinth P3 together with an Olight I3 and an Pilot G2 Mini Pen as my Grab and Go for teh day (they are rare, but they do occur) when I don´t carry my MP 600.
Got another Mr Pinchy in the post today. Tried finding the thread Bob did on Mr Pinchy versions. Any chance of having it as a sticky?
:D Like I originally said in the other thread, ;) congrats! The MP400 Compact Sport is one of my absolute favorite tools. It actually sees more carry time than my beloved MP600's. Be sure to let us know what you think of it. :tu:

Very true. When I first joined I can only think of one chap (Roadie) who regularly carried a MP600. I'm sure there must have been more, but certainly not nearly as many fans as there are at the moment.

I just got myself a Flik, Ill let you know what I think of it after I have had some time to use it properly :)
TBH I don't really know. I suspect Leatherman's QC has been about the same for a few years now, it's just people's willingness to talk about it that might have changed.
I put Gerber's rise in popularity down to the fact we are all a bunch of enablers who can't resist persuading others that our latest MT is the greatest thing since sliced bread. :D The fact that there really are a good few Gerber's worth owning helps a little too. ;)
Nice one Cap'n. Are you a fully converted Gerberite yet, or do you still need some convincing? :P :D :D

I'd agree mate. When I first signed up here it seemed that saying a bad word against LM was considered blasphemy :P but attitudes have changed here, and on the whole people tend to critique tools a lot more fairly rather than getting caught up in brand names or country of origin ;)
I think another reason why people might have started moving into Gerbers a little more, is simply to get their fix. There's not been much in the way of new tools of late generally in the market - slightly revamped versions of old tools, yes - but not much new stuff (aside from the myriad of one piece creations). Folks have therefore been forced to explore avenues they wouldn't have considered before to get their "high" from the new acquisition. I think there's also been some unfair dissillusionment with LM for bringing out all the one piece garbage instead of full tools, when really that's just the Pockettool X side of the company padding out it's line rather than the core tool division. Maybe they should have kept it under a different name like they did with LED Lenser to dissuay that.
OMG - did I just defend LM's business strategies? :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh
:P
It is nice to see the increased Gerberfication though :D, and nice to see that people are discovering that it's not just a new thing for the collection, but quite often it's a good hardworking tool which will serve them well too :)
Nice one Cap'n, now don't go trading this one away :twak: :D

Nope, I really don't think I've seen that before. Very cool. :)I've only ever seen three examples of this particular version (I've got two and Loki-mobile has one), but no doubt other MTo members also have them (Bob, anyone else ?).
That's sweet, detron! :tu: The black one is older, I believe. I'm almost positive that that's Gerbers' first plier head shape. The screws instead of solid pins on the release mechanism as well point to an earlier one. Very nice addition to the family!

The black one looks like a late version 4 Mr Pinchy to me, with the second plier shape that was used by versions 2, 3 & 4. The first plier shape (version 1 only) was more rounded and delicate looking.
Do you have a version breakdown? I am sure it is on mto somewhere, but thought I would go to the source
Do you have a version breakdown? I am sure it is on mto somewhere, but thought I would go to the source
I copied much of the following info from a earlier post on MTo (possibly by Bob ? ), with revisions and additions from looking at various Mr Pinchies (and some assumptions on my part). Naturally any errors/omissions are my fault. If anyone has any corrections and/or extra info please speak up (eg which versions were made with a BO finish). Sorry, I can't do photos. I hope this helps out all those interested in the development of gerber's (in)famous "Mr Pinchy".
EARLY GERBER MULTI-PLIERS ("Mr Pinchy")
Gerber kept making small changes to their Multi-Plier throughout the 1990's, so we tend to see a lot of subtle variations. Some were stamped and sold with the Fiskars logo, and at least some of these had slightly different tool loads (Fiskars owned Gerber at that time). At some stage Gerber started making a BO finish available, as well as the much more common bead blasted SS finish. Here's a summary of the main steps along the way:
Version 1) The very first models had a high-polish finish, instead of the bead blast we've seen on Gerber tools since. It also had button-head screws in all four blade pivot points, and button head screws on the plier slides. Also note the pivot bushing between the plier jaws. A crude pair of scissors was included, and a VERY thick Lanyard clip. The very first run of Multi-Pliers were etched with “FIRST PRODUCTION RUN” (a.k.a. “FPR” ) on one handle.
V1.0 FPR
V1.1 One handle cut-out, mis-matched nail nicks (don’t line up with cut-outs)
V1.2 One handle cut-out, matched nail nicks
V1.2 Two handle cut-outs, matched nail nicks
All ? “PATENT PENDING”
Version 2) The second version went to the now-familiar bead blast finish. The scissors were replaced by a big triangular shaped awl. This version still has button head pivots, button head sliders, and the pivot bushing between the plier jaws. The pliers had slightly beefier jaws with a squarer shape, while the lanyard clip was slimmed to a more “normal” thickness.
V2.0 “PATENT PENDING”
V2.1 “U.S. PATENT NO 5142721”
Version 3) This version wasn't much of a change really. They simply did away with the pivot bushing.
All ? “U.S. PATENT NO 5142721”
Version 4) Changes: On one side of each handle, the button head screw was replaced with a round nut, while a file replaced the large awl.
V4.0 “U.S. PATENT NO
5142721/5142844” NB The 5142844 # was possibly an error, as later versions all used 5212844.
V4.1 “ U.S. 5142721
PATENT 5212844
PAT PEND”
Version 5) This introduced a new, even beefier shape to the blunt nose plier jaws, and needle nose jaws were offered for the first time as well. Gone were the button head slider screws, replaced by two different sizes of round-headed rivets.
All ? “U.S. 5142721
PATENT 5212844
PAT PEND”
At this point Gerber stopped with the minor evolutions of the Multi-Plier (Mr Pinchy) and came out with a major overhaul. Called the Multi-Lock when it first hit the market, the new tool had all-locking blades, plastic sliding lock releases, unique blade-pivot screws, the now familiar little circlip spring steel slider clips, etc.
After a while this tool became the 600-series Multi-Plier (MP600), with all its many tool component and plier type configurations. The very first ones were also stamped "First Production Run" (FPR).

Awesome! And the Cult of the Flicky gains another initiate! What do you think of it so far? If you're not annoying the crap out of your wife and co-workers with the constant flicking open of the pliers, you're not doing it right...... >:D
I just picked up a Diesel, only because I did not have one, and I have never seen one in person! Looks like a nice tool, but I wonder why Gerber makes this when it is pretty much a MP600 with a slightly different look to it. What am I missing??
Just picked as-new 5th gen blunt-nose Multi Plier on the Bay (the one with rivets instead of screws on sliders, which predated 1st gen MP600) for $19 shipped...absolutely stoked!
These supposedly belong to '96-'98 era, yay!
Now the wait begins ;)

Also, what would you recommend as the "proper" method, of cleaning such a tool? My initial toughts were to clean it in warm water, lubricate every moving part with WD40, let it be for some time, remove any excess WD40 and then give it some proper oil.

Aye, thats what i would do. If needed several times the "washout" with the WD-40.
Regarding the rust - if you want fast results: steelwool and oil/WD-40, or if you have some of the abrasive pads (pure, without any detergent). If you have more time try some citric acid from the supermarket (only a few cents), set it up with hot water and put the tool in.
Make the rust deleting thing first - after that start with the warm soapy water, ......
It´s a free available acid, used in kitchens - and the most acid resistant stuff is made from plastic. I wouldn´t worry, but off course i can´t give any guarantee for the plastic Gerber used.Well, I'm definitely gonna take a look around for it later. If I can't find any, I'll just try and clean it with water and WD40 and see if I can scrub it off - it might just be dirt and surface rust. Hopefully...
If you don´t feel comfortable with dunkin it, tie it on some wire at the plastic end, and hang it in the fluid as deep that it doesn´t touch the plastic.
I got Gerbers BG survival tool at a ok price and couldn´t rescist.
Although I´m not a specially fan og the BG line. I must say that this tool seems quite nice.
My latest will be a Flik that should be arriving tomorrow...

While I'm certainly no BG fan I have had a good play with this MT and I do think it's a good one. I was happily surprised by just how slim that sheath is as well. Well worth getting if the price is right IMO. :tu:

I´m in Gerber mode at the moment.
I got two things lately. One bit kit for cheap. It turned up with a box and pouch with room for a multitool.
My guess is that it´s old because they show an old Pinchy in the instructions.
Sweet, it fits my Pinchys and Mp:s

It is a decent tool, but it has its downfalls. My first shipment of Gerbers
How do you like the MP1? I got one when they first came out and the prybar was so loose that it was almost like they forgot to use some washers so I returned it. I am just wondering if they fixed those issues and it's safe to buy one again. I liked the tool arrangement through other then the lack of some Fiskars scissors.
I'd get rid of it ASAP.The Octane?
Yes

I received a pair of Gerber Dimes (one red, one green) for my 47th birthday a few weeks ago.
Not bad little pocket tools. Much better than the Gerber Clutch, that's for sure.
Debating on "requesting" an MP400 or MP600 for Christmas.
My first Gerber ever.
I heard they are ratlly, have short tools and are of reasonable quality.. but darned fun to flick...
So far this opinion seems confirmed (poor little MP400 came in a shipment with a Surge and a SkeleTool and seriously fails in comparison to them).
Still cute and fun and I do like the needlenose pliers... ow the scrissors are darned cool as well :P
Mr. Pinchy for me.

Great pick.
I also have soft spot for Diesels and Multipliers in general.
Mods you say...what mods? Spill the beans! :pok:
I bought an original Gerber Multiplier years ago. The manufactured quality was good, but the handles pinched my palm and deploying the individual tools was laborious. After that experience, I avoided buying another Gerber multitool -- until yesterday.
I bought a Gerber MP400 on sale locally at Menards for about $29. Curiosity got the best of me.
The MP400's knife blade was surprisingly dull. The nail nick is located on the wrong side, but I knew about that ahead of time after reading reviews on Amazon.com. The sheath is too short for the tool and is of poor quality.

I agree with the capt.
....... but I've just found (and am bidding on) a BO one that looks the same (so this one is doubly interesting, as not only is it the oddball combination of handles and tools, but it is also the first BO v1 Mr Pinchy I've ever seen).I've just won this one, so another unusual old Mr Pinchy is heading down under to join his brothers ..... :D
BO Gerber Diesel and bit kit :nanadance:
I think this one might be going knifeless, but in order to do that I need to destroy the DEsTroyer :ahhh For those who don't know, that's a MP600DET with shear heads. Very useful for heavy cutting when I had the boat, less useful now. I'm thinking of robbing it for the blade exchanger and 3D phillips

If it saves the destroyer, plase let me supply a BO Phillips for your Diesel build. I have no BO sawblade coupler, though. (I do, but it will stay in the MP 600 DET...)
It's funny that despite my preference for needlenose pliers, the blunt noses always look so badass and make me want to get one >:DI agree with what others have written that the needlenose are useful in a wider variety of situations. That said, the blunt nose fills a gap in my set of multitools.

Good to hear you're liking it so far Kyle. :tu:
On flicking the pliers: You're dead right that if you squeeze the handles together at all then the head won't come out. The way I do it is to hold the Diesel between my thumb and the base of my index finger, but not curling my fingers closed at all. Then flick it sideways over my knuckles rather than forwards. This way you don't every lose control of one of the legs and I've never felt like it was going to come out of my hand. Not sure I'm making that totally clear though.
Oh, and if you've not tried it yet the can opening is awful at opening cans, but does make a passable awl. :D
Congrats on your new Diesel!
It is indeed a major upgrade on the MP600, just about all tools sans MP600's 3D screwdriver were upgraded and "fixed". I love mine in BO, but as with most of my Gerbers - I rarely use it. :(
As for the flicky pliers issue, just give it some time to 'work in' and the pliers should flick out when holding both handles. I had the same issue with mine initially but works effortlessly now.
Enjoy! :tu:
Ah, I totally had it wrong ;). I'll keep trying that method as well. It seems like a good way.

Nice one Mon. :tu:Thanks buddy! I don't know why the blade was changed, but I'm young in the flicky faith ;). It looks like the same size as the blade on the MP400 though, which is odd. I would think the 600's blade would be a bit bigger. It's good for me as a utility type blade since I already have a nice PE blade on my SAK.
Does anyone know why Gerber switched the blade shape on their multitools? It's one thing that just drives me up a wall. I absolutely despise the "newer" style blade. It makes no sense to me. :bnghd:
Sorry for being so cheery this morning. :D
I stumbled on a Resolve from the less popular Suspension family. I do have some of that family already and even though it´s not my intention to get them I thought "I might as well....."
The only problem is that the tools are awfully stiff on one side. It seems like one of the washers with a small tab is dislocated or broken and maybe that´s the reason.
I´v tried to loosen up the torx which is pretty straight forward compared to the cnurled screws on Leatherman. I ´v heaten up the screw with a lighter but it´s so stuck i can´t move it.I even destroyd a premium torx driver that coudn´t stand the force.
I do suck at it though I´m quite handy about other stuff but I never managed to undo a LM cnurled screw and now I ´m defeated by a simple Gerber torx to.

Did you try both sides? Generally the post side is keyed, trying to move that side won't work well.

Just got a Gerber Dime, my first Gerber. Have to say, I am very very unimpressed with the fit and finish on this tool, and it has some really questionable design choices. Then again, what did I expect for $13 new.
The drive on the torx screws holding this thing together looks like it was carved out with a stone arrow or something. I don't get it, they are off center and already look stripped.
Hi WiseDuck, thanks for the advice. I don't care enough about this tool to start fiddling with Gerber over it. The screws are a little unsightly and I imagine it would be hard to disassemble, but it functions fine so I can't really complain too much for $13. It will sit on my desk as a really fancy package opener now. I filed down some of the corners and it opens and closes a lot better now.
Speaking of poor quality. I found the Bear Grylls Tool Pack on sale the other day for about 35-40 dollars, which is a fantastic price because other places in Sweden sell it for three times the price. I went for it because the pack got a good review on this website.
Unfortunately... Gerbers Chinese QC or lack thereof decided to strike again. Firesteel, OK. LED light, OK.
Multitool? Eh. 3/4 pivot screws partially stripped, crooked handles on the tool end, crack in the plastic, knife is very difficult to get out and almost impossible to close again, same with the can opener and cap lifter combo tool, my thumb is really sore from pulling on the tab to disengage the lock. It's impossible to do it one-handed. The tools on the other side? Very smooth, lockup is nice etc.
So basically, whoever put together this tool just did not give a **** that day. The tool sorta kinda works but you really have to fart around a lot with the lock and because the screws are partially stripped, you'll never be able to take it apart or adjust it. I'm not sure what to do with it. Maybe I'll return it, maybe.
I am too already with my first and only Gerber :D
I posted pics of it already, but I couldn't help adding this one here, too :D

MP400. I mean it is a MP400 right? It says Compact Sport Multiplier on the packaging. It's an older package too, says trademarked 2010.

So... believe or not, I bought another Dime... after selling mt Dime Travel two months ago and bitching so much about it.. who'd have thought...The Dime is great, except for that nail file. If they were to improve that they could raise their price >:D
Well.. I always thought it's pretty and I don't have anymore Gerbers or keychain tools around.. plus I found it for 15 USD shipped NIB - which is insanely cheap for Romania.
Amazingly I kind of like it...
Gerber quality shines throughout :bnghd: the edge was chipped from the box, the boxcutter is a nailbreaker...
However the pliers are nce and comfy, scissors are adecvate, the screwdriver is nice, the bottle opener is one of the best in the business and the knife cuts... I guess it have a Philips with nailfile too, but it's not convincing...
Extra points for snappy opening and spring-loaded pliers...
I replaced the tweezers with a Wenger toothpick - the pliers are a pretty good tweezers anyway.
All this in a very tiny, light and pretty looking package... let's see how well it holds...
Nice! :tu: In its Pro Scout form, the best multitool out there. Anyone saying otherwise will be immediately banned........ >:D

Yeah, I'd want something in between. I'd be interested in ditching the lanyard loop and putting some scissors in this thing, but not sure where I'd even get the parts or if it is feasible. I don't care about the saw too much and like having two blades.
As for best multitool...hard to say. I think the PST will always be my favorite.
Just got a chinese copy of an MP600 EOD, but this one is SS rather than the usual black paint. It is destined to donate its pliers to a lonely MP650. This was the only way I know of to get a SS EOD plier head for an MP650, as Gerber never offered that particular head for sale separately (I've managed to find spares for all the other heads, but never a SS EOD needle nose plier head).
Nice! :tu: In its Pro Scout form, the best multitool out there. Anyone saying otherwise will be immediately banned........ >:D

The flicky MPs are really easy to work on.Lynn done a great strip down guide. Thing to do might be to look for damaged ones on eBay to get the additional tools you want
Everyone say bye to Nate.... :waving:Darn it, and he just started showing up again ;)
LOL! I couldn't help myself.
That's us mobile.
Nate
Hello and for me this my first Gerber its GDC Tech Skin Pocket Knife, its knife its not multi tool but my multi tool is on the road!!!!
I'm not surprised. I have a red/black as well as a black oxide Dime. The pliers on both feel pretty chintzy, even compared to the Leatherman Squirt which are light duty to begin with.
Just got a used MP 600 in great shape for a good price. I am really digging the build quality and sturdiness of this tool. Can't stop playing with the plier release mechanism.I just got the same model but newer with the wharncliffe blade and I love it. This is definitely my favorite MT :multi:

Grabbed a Shard, plus a couple more for gifts.

Now, is that black oxide or some other black finish?

Sweet :tu: Has this type of cutter been an issue for you at all, or do you not really use them?
I haven't enjoyed using them.
I wouldn't try to take an MP600 on a plane if you want to keep it. Perhaps the regulations technically allow a tool with those specs to pass security, but that is entirely irrelevant since the final decision is at the discretion of the TSA agent you encounter. Thanks for that info :salute: I'm not an experienced or frequent flier, so that's good to know. I really don't expect to be flying anyway, but one never knows.
A great many tools that meet regulations have been confiscated at airports for this reason. I mean, the Style PS gets snatched all the time, and it's a lot more innocuous looking than a BO MP600; aka giant scary black sabotage tool.
Lookin good Kyle :tu:Thanks buddy :)
I don't think i'd try to take the bladeless mp600 on a plane. I'd do a carry on luggage or just mail the darn thing there if need be. I'll stick to carrying my p51 and craftsman 4 way screwdriver in my wallet. I might try a Leatherman Pirahana but that's as far as i'd probably go.
Bullrush, the computer supplier we commonly order from had it at 20$, which is a fantastic price for Switzerland (commonly its around 60 - 150$).I believe I almost bought one of those at my Home Depot recently. Nice little tool :tu:
Didn't really order it myself, the boss needed something to get over the threshhold for free shipping :D
Soon to be a BO mp400 ;)
Did gerber ever make a leather sheath?
I have a Leather sheath for my MP600. :think:You know good and well it's a LM sheath :twak:
Fits pretty dang good if I remember correctly which leads me to believe its not a factory sheath.
I will try and find it and see if it has any Gerber markings.
Well then I'm going to make one for my modded mp400. Wet molded :)

You will need a small hole at the bottom. I believe Lowtech ran with the idea and made one with a metal ring that looked great. I'm sure you could do the same.
Does/did anyone ever have a gerber 400 series that the cutters didn't cut that well? The ones on my fisherman don't go closed all the way like on my others? I know I can't send it for warranty as these are long discontinued.

You can see daylight through my mp400 fisherman cutters but they close when you apply pressure and they work fine.

Mine is pretty bad. I may have to grind them slightly to make better cuts. Do you have a pic so I can compare?
Me neither....Color me intrigued.
As an aside, I don't have a new Gerber, but I have something on the way to fit a Gerber..... hopefully..... the last time I tried this it didn't work, but hopefully I'll have more luck this time round.
More details when it comes in :tu:
Well it was another fail :-\ though it could be made to fit....
It relates to the EAB/EAB Lite... should I make a thread in the Gerber forum or the Edged tools...

With a little pressure, that's just the light reflecting off the anvil side, the cutters are completely closed.

Not a multitool, but it's a Gerber!Sweet utility knife :D
A Gerber Propel with a 420HC blade. I liked the S30V version so much I decided to get this one too and make it my beater blade. I've used it a fair bit lately and I really love it. You'd be surprised how useful a blade with tanto tip and partial serrations can be as a utility knife. I've used it a lot lately to help cut and install windbreak paperboard at my parents summer house.
I don't know if that was sarcastic or not. But yeah, let's call this 80 dollar assisted fighting knife with tanto tip and serrations my "utility knife". :D But hey, that's how I use it. Today is Christmas and I used it to cut cardboard boxes to size, to fit the presents I had to wrap.No sarcasm whatsoever buddy :D I really dig your knife :tu:
What are you going to make?
If you have extra parts let me know. :D
My latest Gerber is a MP600 I absent mindedly bid on - I only realized the PO modded it with lock picking inserts after I won the auction...
I am undecided wether to keep it for it´s novelty character, dismantle it for parts or just pass it on to someone who would get soem use out of it.
it cam with a self made Bit adaptor and bits, too.

Sounds like an interesting mod, if it's well done. Can we see some pics of that and the custom bit adapter?
On a somewhat related note, I've considered getting into lockpicking as a hobby, but with the situationally questionable legality it may not be a great idea. My car trunk and EDC bag already look like a burglar's kit, or worse

As far as I know lock picking as a hobby is perfectly legal. Carrying lock picking tools outside your home is not. Now to be completely honest I have not really looked into the laws on this, but it is just what I remember from years ago. I need to do some legal research to see if you can carry those tools outside your home. Its the same with tools to unlock cars. I do not believe you can carry those unless you are a tow truck driver or similar. I could definitely be wrong though.
EDIT: Here is the law for CA.
Penal code - 466-469
http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/displaycode?section=pen&group=00001-01000&file=466-469
Basically you can own and have them with you as long as you are not intending to use them in a crime. Other "burglary tools" listed are hammers, pliers, and screwdrivers, so anything can be considered a burglary tool. Its all about how they perceive your intentions.
This is only for CA. Check your own local laws. :tu:

No, not yet. I was going to try it out on some brush in the backyard, but we ended up getting a foot of snow, so haven't made it back there yet. I also haven't been offroading since getting it, and the next run is on a pretty open trail, so won't need to use it. :(With my Swisschamp for size reference.Picked up a Gerber Gator machete today.Pics man!

I'll be going to a home brewed bladeless at some point, but I want a blunt nose with the standard non-replacable cutters to do it with
Nice, John! :tu: I really need to get my hands on one.

This arrived today. The tools are kinda tight and gritty, like my Dime was, so I'll have to fiddle with it. No big deal there. But the pliers are also nearly impossible to flick out. Don't know if they just need some exercise/oiling or what ???

My Octane was the first Gerber I could flick! Needs a different grip to a MP :tu:
I went to work on the Octane, loosening a few screws (thankfully it's plain old torx) and now it's considerably easier to operate :tu:

The Octane? Well, it is discontinued, but...

Update:
Whilst testing out different grips to see which one most reliably works for flicking out the Octane's pliers, I managed to hurl it across the room and knock my glass of milk off the table  . . .
Update:Ha, good one :) There's a thread here somewhere about flicking accidents....

Alright, it's time for another Stupid Question™
Are there any scissors that will fit in the Octane's blade slot? I really like the blade itself, but feel that I'd end up getting more utility from a pair of scissors on this kind of minimalist tool. I know the blade can easily be removed, but I want to keep a cutting implement in there.

I took the blade off completely, including the channel, and carry a SAK with it. Rides even slimmer and less obtrusively than it did before, and a very easy mod to do.
I did originally look at putting scissors in, but the Wingman scissors looked like too much work, and I think the abutment (backstop) when open was in the wrong place
Nice! Enjoy the Pro Scout! Just remember the Flicky mantra - Keep calm and annoy the crap out of someone flicking the pliers open. >:D+1 :salute:

If they don't just loosen the pivot screw a fraction.
Regular pliers suck for that job, but I use a SOG Pocket PowerPlier for openeing Gerber tools. The Compoind Leverage realy helps grip that tight screw. If they don't just loosen the pivot screw a fraction.
I may have to try that. Not sure if I have the proper tool to fit those pivot screws.

Yes I have been thinking about getting a set of tools for my new Gerber and my Leathermans. Haven't gotten around to it yet though. I did, however, break out my PowerLock and it worked like a charm. Was able to loosen the pivot screw about 1/4 turn. Now all the tools are are silky smooth and easy to open. Thanks everyone!Fantastic! Glad it worked. Now use it and tell us about it.... with pics :D

I should have said that the my MPT came complete with the leather pouch/sheath, I would just like to see leather pouch's/sheath's available for the MP600 for example
I didn't even remember I had a Gerber MT til I found this in my dresser drawer! I understand it is a MP400. :)

Please, tell me more about it. If you've owned several, your opinion is even more relevant to me. I have just bought one after drooling over the MP800 for months. It will arrive in a couple weeks hopefully.

What not? How does it compare to other MTs you have/had? How is it for EDC and Belt Carry?
Thanks! I've read almost every post on this forum about it but appreciate newer, more fresh info and recent opinions on it.
Thanks again.
Those look good M :tu:Thank you sir.
I know it's not really a Gerber, but I finally got my hands on a MultiTasker!Looking forward to your thoughts on it :tu:
First impressions are actually a little better than expected. This thing really is decent for an off brand China-made tool. I'm currently giving some serious thought to EDCing this for a while and doing a write-up for the reviews section after some time in use.

MP400. Gave it a nice cleaning. It's much better than I thought, to be honest. The pliers are nice, tight, quite robust for the size, and the tools lock solidly. They do not snap like on a LM or a SAK, but there is zero movement.

Very nice. Got the same kit before the CD challenge. :)
Congrats! Great kit. Use the cleaning stuff on my pistol and lens cleaning stuff on my camera and binoculars. Of course, the CD comes with it. :)
Yeah I thank/Blame your links for the purchase too! :twak::rofl:
I held off on the Black one throughout the challenge and even when another member here offered me a trade for his as he was not a believer after the challenge but then in a moment of intense justification I made a lower offer on Ebay and here it is! :dunno:
I can always use the cleaning kit stuff and the Red Mag is interesting as is the case too!
And since I have carried the CD ever since getting mine it just was an easy purchase to make. :tu:
Thanks Again!
Got a Mr. Pinchy... will share pics when I get the chance to take one...Cool, Jaya! :like:

Recently received these. At pretty fantastic price too to believe. ;) Info needed. I only know the very polished, very shiny, very mint Mr pinchy is a early one but how early is it.. and I cant seem to find any info on the folder.. :think:It is a V.1.0 non-FPR. Nail nicks wrong side of blades and cutouts on blade sides only.

Nice find, Sam! :like:
The knife I'm not familiar with, but it has the same styling/blade/scissors/lock tabs as the MP800/700 tools, so probably from the same era. Looks like an awesome rare pocket tool. :)
Thanks Gman! What's FPR though.. :facepalm:First Production Run. :)

Here is something I wrote several years ago about the different versions of Mr Pinchy, it might help:

Thanks Greg! Do u have any info on the small folder? A model number or something would be great.
Sorry, I've tended to speSmurfpillse in "pliery" MTs, so haven't taken much notice of knives. I agree with GLBM that it looks very similar to the Gerber MP700 Urban Legend MT. thanks anyway!
This one is just delivered , a GERBER BALANCE :woohoo::like:
Thank you, Chief!

:like: Radius imo is one of the oddest MT from Gerber! Strange combination of material and very peculiar implements! Light duty in a massive package!:iagree:
That's an odd and nice Gerber, Alex! ;) I was never drawn to it though, but as a collector is a must have :hatsoff:Many thanks, TP!
What I like the most about it though, is the sheath.
I got a new "BG Suspension" and it came with that sheath or a very similar one, and I love it!! :salute:
Arrived last week, GERBER MP600 :woohoo:

Had a Gerber Flik. (Was stolen some weeks ago. Hard to find another here)Man,
The tool was my most liked toy to play, fidget ...
I developed my own techinique to open the scisors (nice scisors)
Maybe a MP-400 or a Diesel (hard to find too) for the next tool...
One hand opening for me is essential

Nice .Thanks, T-G!
That BO CenterDrive is next on my Gerber "wanted list", but I'm going to wait until the prices on them drop a bit (both the BO CD and the CD Plus cost 169,90€ over here at the moment ::)).
So, what do you think of that leather sheath ? Only "negative" thing I could say about it is that it's a bit bulky, but on the other hand, the CD is a big tool, and there's room for the bits as well, can't pack all of that in a slim sheath, right ;).
I think that Center Drive set is a great deal--unfortunately, I own nothing in .223. Thus, the kit is useless. I wonder if it can be used with .22 rifles safely?
Thanks, T-G!
The sheath definitely looks like a well made, well thought-out, and nicely finished accessory. The sheath is about as small as it could be considering the material and tool size(a bit bulky as you mentioned)/bit set size. They might could have saved a bit of thickness by using a snap like the ones on the new Leatherman nylon sheaths. Overall I think Gerber did a great job on it. It is good to see Gerber(and LM) starting to take their sheaths more seriously. :)
Edit:
Checking around, maybe you could contact this guy about international shipping?

I bought my BO CD by buying that kit. I don't have a rifle, but the brushes, lens stuff, oil, and stuff come in handy for other things. :)
The Maglite that came with mine is a high-intensity red, but I don't know if all the Otis kits come with it.

Something that I salivate everytime I look at Chako's. Manage to snag one myself nib. It shall stay forever sealed in its plastic prison. :D
Better it stays pristine in it's "plastic prison". Based on my examples (4) those pretty, light coloured handles get dirty and scratched rather easily.

Nice find, Sam!
Mp600. On the hunt for a good sheath. Any recommendations? Looking for low profile and ease of access.
A LM XL Molle sheath fits the MP600s very nicely. Deep opening on the sides makes tool retrieval very easy.
Thanks Sam. I’ll have to pick one up. Is it normal for Gerbers to have so much play in the plier head? I can handle a little rattle, but wanted to make sure this is normal.
If u are refering to the rattle from the handle touching the pliers, that's perfectly normal. Happens to all the slide out design.

Today arrived a BO MP600 SIGHT :hatsoff:
2 MP600 came in lately :)Nice collection!
... and today, made my first two mods:
-reduced handle splay. This is more for function than anything else 'cause I have somewhat small hands. Now it fits comfortably in-hand, and I find the parallel(ish) handles reminiscent of the MP series with pliers deployed. Using a carbide bit with a Dremel, I ground aprox. 1.5-2mm from the pliers end stop (where the handle's "tongue" slips into), thus retaining the closing snap.
-polished clip. This was just for some bling.

I guess since Fiskars originally sold it, it uses the Multiplier's patents, and Fiskars owns Gerber it's technically a Gerber, right?
Fiskars Excalibur.
I love the design. Good drivers, outside accesible blade, and absolutely awesome scissors. These aren't "clip coupons, your fingernails, and tape" scissors--these are cut brush, leather, rope, tree limbs, zip-ties, etc. all while still being sharp and precise enough to cut paper. They're too heavy to cut my fingernails, however. Like cutting hair with a weed whacker kind of precise.
I like it so well, I bought a Hanwei Professional. Same design, just a different company selling it. I think it's even made in the same factory.

Nice one FB. This design is something I think is great but for some reason I like carrying several tools instead, ok I know why but still.I totally get that. I bought this one just to collect and not use. I like the older stuff.
The latest Gerber in is an old stock LST.
Beautifull Pro Scout Sir Vic!:iagree: those carbide cutters are the worst

Getting caught up here after a couple years of being out of the Gerber scene.
Gerber Stake Out just in from REI.
I keep an MP600 bladeless in my desk at work for similar reasons. AFAIK, it's the only actually bladeless mainstream PBMT. Leatherman makes the knifeless Rebar... with a 3 inch long saw. Not sure how many places will give you a pass on a saw but not a knife, but not any where I've had to deal with.
But which one is your favorite?
That's the fun part! Congratulations! Thanks! They're quite sturdy and the spring action is great on both. Still need to sharpen the blades. I'm leaning towards the Vise, the blades can perform most of the scissors' tasks.
Latest arrived today, an MP400 Fisherman.
Thank you Barry and Vicman! Took a while to find a semi-decent priced one.

Great Gerbers. Hope each day you'll feel better Lisa.
Lisa I just saw a video on the SOG and Gerber EOD versions last night. I'm can't remember if you had a 600 EOD yet?I don't have one of those yet. I think that is the one that there is a clone/knock-off of it and you have to be careful when buying one.

Need help with my recent "mp600"!!! :dunno: :ahhh
It was sold as an mp600 but, looking closer, it resembled a Multi Lock Scout (predecessor of the Pro Scout). However, all images and pictures I have found (which aren't much, by the way), show a diamond grit file, Fiskars branded scissors, and nail nicks instead of cutouts on blade and file. Is this a warranty/repair, a rare unit, or something cobbled up? It appears almost unused. What you all think? [ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
Congratulations Antti! Thanks Barry, i have desired this tool since it was launched but only now pulled trigger for it.
The DF doesn't have all the small tools that are typical in multitools such as the can and bottle openers, assorted drivers, or an awl. It is strictly a brute force kind of tool. There's no finesse to it at all, but I don't think you'll do any better with any multitool if you have to break a frozen 1/2 inch (12.7mm) bolt.
