Title: These boots are made for walking
Post by: Serena on December 05, 2018, 12:51:22 PM
What's on your feet? Do you like boots, sneakers, or some other kind of footwear?

I just bought these beauties, Panama Jack Felina Igloo Boots. Really warm!!!

I really like your boots!

I almost exclusively wear Floris van Bommel shoes, but those are not really useful for outdoorsy stuff :)

Those are nice looking boots Serena.   :tu:

I mostly wear lightweight waterproof hiking shoes or boots in the colder weather and running shoes in the summer.

Great thread :tu:

I wear a few different brands of boots for work, usually wear one pair out before using the next :salute:

Right now I am wearing Ariats, not insulated so we will see how i fair this winter with that :ahhh I have done this before with just wool socks but the coldest it normally gets here is in the low teens F. On occasion it dips down to 0° F but hope we take that day for days off  :D

Insulated boots are overkill for me on a typical winter day in Spain,

I guess I should convert my F to C and see what the temps should be  but it is rather cold but that is relative to other places in the world where it really does get cold  :ahhh :D

Well, I luckily have great circulation and have been facing the elements year round for 20 + years (wow that seems like a long time now that I type it down) :salute: So to me insulated boots are nice but not a must have :tu:

I only wear boots from late fall into early spring. Hence they seem to last forever.

Here are my go to's. I do have a couple of pairs of insulated boots but I rarely wear them even when well below 0°F unless I have to be outside standing around for any length of time. I find a good thick pair of wool socks and not too tight shoes or boots work just fine for me.

The running shoes I wear from early summer to early fall. Light cool and comfortable and great for walking.  :tu:

Hope the fresh pair arrives soon…

I wear Bates Enforcer boots.

to work, to school, to cut the grass, to snow-blow.  everywhere

I keep the old ones for yard work, and when I get a new pair, all of the others get upgraded.  New for daily wear, so old daily wear gets moved to yard pair, and that pair gets send down to snow-blowing pair, and that one gets moved to mud work.

I feel they are as comfortable as tennis shoes, with added ankle support, and the round nub traction gives good traction in any direction.

My work attire is "business tactical"  these boots , 5.11 tacticle tac lite pro pants, and a dress shirt (sometimes with tie)

these boots are all I have worn for the past 10 years or so.

Nice footwear y'all.  I am still wearing my Thorogoods.  1 pair for work and one pair everything else.  I wear Merells when hiking.  I have a pair of 25 or so year old boots by Havana Joe.  I keep my boots almost as clean as Nix.

I use to clean them more but as much as I walk on a jobsite the bottoms wear out and no matter how good I keep them they still wear out to the point they need to be thrown away in usually 3 to 6 months with an occasional pair lasting longer  :salute:

These are my "do all" chukka boots.  Grippy sole, gore-tex lined and smart enough once I've given them a clean. ;)  I've got plenty of other footwear, but they tend to be more activity specific.

I guess these Danner pull-ons would be my equivalent to those Chukkas. My go-to, 'do all' boots. They started out as Danner's, but they've had a few sets of replacement insoles and they are sporting their third set of soles (Vibram treads installed by a local boot maker). A bit scuffed and scarred, but still serviceable for daily use. I think they still have plenty of life left!

Very cool. Danner used to be the hiking boot of choice 20 years ago, before everyone switched to what I call "hiking sneakers". I'd love to find a good pair of Danner leather hiking boots.

Oh, and my re-treads:

(In some cultures it is offensive to flash or point one's shoe soles at another person, so I've stuck my potential offending soles in Spoiler.)

Close up with boot maker's brass screws:

These new soles gave the boots a very different feel. I think the brass screws conduct heat fairly quickly, and my feet seem to get cold in these boots more easily if standing around outside on a cold day now.

Got to visit the Danner Factory store in Portland, Oregon.

Extremely extremely well made, but of the dozen or more pairs I tried on they were all too narrow in the heel! (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181207/69b750d4de446e3d99938b76d5db3d47.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181207/35d9f8d369bc759fa7df7f0f12bcc41c.jpg)

While I'm here, has anyone tried Thorogood? I want a wedge style bottom with moc toe.

The only thing close in Redwing is a heritage, and it's double the price of a Thorogood.

These are my 20 year old -H.H.- nubuck harness boots. The company is out of Pennsylvania. I thought they still had character, but
Y-yikes! Looking at them to take the picture, I think they have gone past "character" and it may actually be time to replace them!

Hi NiX,

Yeah I've seen them online and Amazon and whatnot, but as NKlamerus has pointed out, fit is important. I try not to buy my boots online for that reason, and I *never* see Danner Mountain Lights in stores. Too many people want brown sneakers but I need the support of leather near my right ankle because it looks like  >  instead of like >

That didn't post well. Let's just say the sideways "V" shaped Lateral Malleolus the we all have on the outside of our ankle looks more like a sideways "W" on my right side.

I suppose I could get a pair, narrow though Klamerous has said they are in the heel, and just stretch the leather slowly while waterproofing it at the same time...

You might give Danner a call.

They have a good return policy, although, I hate to have the hassle of returning boots/shoes.

Still......a well-made, well-fitting boot can be hard to find (just ask me).   :salute:

Looking at them to take the picture, I think they have gone past "character" and it may actually be time to replace them!
I think you're right…

Oh man, with every step I would think that there's a little pebble stuck or something.
Really annoying if you're walking on concrete I think.
Or is this just for snow/ice?

If shoveling/snow blowing out on the sidewalk you wouldn’t even know, if no snow and just concrete it’s like that noisy car with a rock in its tire, but you don’t feel anything because theres 14 in each and spread apart, unlike if there were like 4 and you would think you had a pebble stuck in a groove.. now going shopping no, cause if walking on that finished smooth concrete, yeah all clicking when walking in a perfect straight line, but when turning, SCREEEEECH! So there used only when winter and I gotta clean the sidewalks off,

The mail man just delivered a pair of black ones (https://int.florisvanbommel.com/en/men/shoes/boots/wool-lined-black-calf’s-leather-lace-shoe/1075112.html) (wool lined, buffalo leather) in size 46 (11?)

Suuuper comfortable!

Picked up these reproduction of US WWII jump boots a couple of days ago.  Proper stitched sole and solid leather uppers.  These are going to take some breaking in.

Last November I bought these from the local Trespass shop:

Kinda cheap, but they work well for my needs. (I don't hike much.  ::) )

Ordered some Merrell Vapor Glove 3 trail runners, so hopefully those will work well for light hikes.

I've had some luck with less expensive lessor name shoes.  They tend to not last is normally the situation for me.  I hope you get miles and miles/ kilometers and kilometers from those.

I had a cheap pair of Karrimor trainers that I wore for work, eight hours a day, five days a week for YEARS.  Unbelievable good value and were comfortable from the get-go.  I finally wore the soles paper thin and had to admit they were ready to retire.

Right?
If they hadn't fit, it probably would have taken until July to have fitting shoes in hand. :ahhh (or "on feet", I might say)

I'll have to ease into these.
They absolutely do not allow you to walk with your heel contacting the ground first on each step. 0 padding. I'll have to walk on the balls of my feet.
On the flip side, they fit like gloves and weigh only 250 grams. :D

These Dr. Martens brown Chelsea boots have been my go-to boots for the last year.  https://www.drmartens.com/uk/en_gb/p/11853201

Lashings of Urad makes them well nigh 100% waterproof and the famous air-cushion sole makes them very, very comfortable.

I switched to Dunlop boots entirely when my Muck had seen better days, and the heels ripped out of a less than one year old pair of Servus boots.   I wanted something that was "not made in the Orient". The Puroforts are Dutch-made and the Chesapeake American.

I wear Dunlop Purofort Plus Full Safety boots around the farm working and hiking in the woods. Since I don't go places like I did pre-COVID, I wear them more than anything else. I also wear them to town when I do go. These are MUCH more comfortable than the Muck Boots they replaced, which the foam calves had turned into Swiss Cheese, and the boots were no longer really waterproof. I did not want something cheap (I had a pair of Servus on which the heel ripped out after less than a year); and I didn't want foam calves as they rip in brush thickets and around barbed wire, and I wanted full safety and certified slip-resistant.  I ended up paying $180 for them; which was about double what the Mucks were. Luckily, I'd been planning to replace the Mucks for a year at the time.  I plan to get 5 years out of them like I did the Muck. These are really comfortable, and I can wear them a long time without my feet hurting. I'm a size 9.5W/EE, but these are 10s, to allow for heavy socks.  I've fallen and slipped in these MUCH less than the old Mucks (and the cheap Itasca I still keep around for snow boots, since they have a foam calf) or Servus.

The tread. I didn't clean them before I took these photos back in late Oct.

These are the cheaper Dunlop Chesapeake; about $25. These are also steel toe. These I wear for just general "throw on" and they replaced a pair of Crocs, and the Servus that wore out prematurely. I didn't really need a second pair, but I like having a cheap option.  Plus, if I get something on them, it's not like the expensive boots. Basically, these are garden shoes. They suck in the winter, however. Thus, they are warm-weather only. The tread collects snow which freezes, and then causes me to fall on my rear. The steel toe cap in these is also cold, due to the much thinner rubber they are made out of.

Nice wellies Cody.  :tu:  Yours are clearly doing a lot more than mine but I have a pair of Dunlop "blizzard" boots that have been great for the last couple of winters.  Comfiest wellies I've ever owned.

:iagree:.  I've used some cheap wellies for work but I always have to add inserts for my feet.

I picked up some decent boots that had very low mileage on them.  I cannot recall the name off hand.  I also picked up some Clark desert boots ( Chukka ).  These were also pre owned, its not something is typically do but these also were seldom worn.  I picked up both incredibly cheap.  I'll post up pics later.

I always liked their boots but the UK made ones. Was very sad when they moved the production of some models to Asia. :(

I picked up a pair of Wolverine steel toes that were worn but barely from the thrift store.  I've been wearing them every day for work and they are pretty good boots.  Don't know what they cost new but I paid $20.  The boots with them are ones I picked up a while back ( my last post ).  They are my yard boots.  I've never worn these type but I really like them.

My favorite boots so far are Thorogoods.  The price went way up since I bought my first pair.  I'll take my worn beat up ones in for a resole which can be done since they have a Goodyear stitch.   In the mean time I bought the black ones but since I got the Wolverines I'll wear those till they are ready for the bin.
